Unrelated note but I picture Verde having JEHUTY voice from Zone of the Enders, at least the japanese version which is the only one I've heard.
[X][Plan] See if your companion has any advice, if so, follow it as much as reasonable, if not, see if you can make the vines into some kind of rope to make it so you don't have to descend completely unsupported.
"How about... Verde? If that's okay with you."
"Acknowledged. This unit designation is now [Verde]. Setup is complete." At those words you felt something like a shock pass quickly throuhg your head. But as soon as it came, it went away. This is the second time this happens, you'll have to take some time off to think of it later. But for now...
"Umm, Verde." The robot posture changes inmediatly, they're still and rigid as a statue. "Ehhh, do you have any idea about how to get down of here? Also there's no need to be so, emmm, rigid when I call your name."
Their posture becomes slightly more loose but they still look tense, as if ready to jump. "Understood, this unit shall commit that command to memory." It wasn't a commmand though. "As for your question Master Angel: Affirmative. Even though this is a starter area, this is still a dungeon, and like so there's an intended route to take to the bottom of the structure. According to earlier inspections, a set of stairs should be just behind that door over the south end of this floor. There should be sets of stairs in every floor, if not on this building then on it's couterpart."
That makes sense you guess. If this is a game and this is a dungeon then its obvious that there should be a way out, regardless of how broken and ruined the place looks.
"The elevatos are an alternative, though there is the need to restore power to them. A working generator should be within one of the lower floors, albeit it may be away from the direct route to the bottom of this structure."
There's that too. The robot you named Verde said there are 10 floors, so they are probably shortcuts for after completing the dungeon. As for where they are, you probably have to take time to explore around every floor if you're to find them.
"Lastly, as this is a dungeon Master Angel, there are enemies in it. Although they can be caught in solitary units, they tend to attack in groups, so a strategy is adviced. Furthemore, it is adviced to not understimate any enemy, regardless of level or appearance."
Right, enemies. Makes sense, and you doubt you'll just dismiss any kind of monster based on looks. There was an old online game you played years ago where, in an undead town full of zombies, death knights, and the like, the most powerful enemy was a little girl sitting in what appeared to be a miniature crescent moon. Despite being some decades old the game is still popular enough to remain in its feet. The simplicity of it just adding to its old charm.
"Alright, let's go then. If we encounter any monsters then we simply have to engage. If we take it carefully se should be fine."
"Roger, Master Angel."
And with that the two of you open a door to a room with a set of old stairs that have withstood the test of time. Inmediately after descending you feel a change in the atmosphere. Like non-existing hairs raising on the back of your neck. Despite looking the same this floor seems completely different. As if it was waiting to open up and devour you.
Taking a few deep breaths, you march on.
------
"Haaa... Haaa... Ghkk!!" You could barely stand up. Legs felt like they were made of lead. Maybe they were? You doubt it, probably some other material that is unique and ligh. You feel dizzy, but are still able to look on to what enemy has done so much damage to you.
Butterflies...
poison butterflies...
It had started okay, you had encountered some monsters that looked like some broken down small robots. They didn't hit that hard and went down easily enough.
Then the last one standing shot electricity at you.
Afterwards a loud noise, an alarm probably, and more of them appeared. More broken pieces of metal, thankfully no more electricity. Verde was able to stop them in time.
They looked bad, burn marks across their body where the electricity hit them. They didn't complain about it, they said nothing actually. After that first encounter you took a few minutes to breath and keep exploring the floor. That's when you encountered the butterflies.
You thought they were normal, albeit a bit bigger, ones, so you ignored them and focused on the small broken robot in the middle of them. That's when things started to go bad real fast. For one, you were still hurt from that last time, then the butterflies started charging at you with enough force to actually send you flying back a bit. The robot then used its electricity and the butterflies started pouring some powder onto both you and Verde. Poison you found quickly as dull pain appeared every few seconds.
You managed to get up now, tried to claw at a butterfly.
Tried...
The thing flew away evading your slow arm and you almost fell from the spike of pain of another buterfly slamming onto you. When you raised your head the robot was about to discharg its electricity again.
"Master!"
Verde jumped in front of you and took the whole of their attacks. Their body shook, but kept in place.
"Ma-" They were cut off when all butterflies charged onto them. You tride to get up, you heard a buzzing sound and froze. Electricity was fired, Verde took the hits for you again.
They fell, and didn't get up.
"No no no nonononono-" A hit to your stomach, your vision fading. You raised your arms and tried to reach Verde then it all faded to black.
...
You awoke with a jump in a broken down room. Broken doors, holes in the floor, vines covering some of the floor and walls, a green robot staring a-you jumped at them. You jumped and hugged them, hard.
They were there, they were real. You could feel the cold metal, hear a mechanical monotonous voice but didn't pay it any attention.
It felt way too real... their unmoving body, the smoke raising from it, the smeel of the burning materials, the lack of light in the eyes...
...and it was all a game.
...
This is a game, just a game! The realization felt so stupid that you just laughed, laughed and laughed at yourself for forgetting about that, at how stupid your reaction seemed looking back, you laughed and cried at the same time.
It felt real.
You don't want to see something like that ever happen outside of a video game.
You're laughing and crying and a mess and you keep hugging Verde who is just staying silent. Your head was a mess, you felt awful and stupid at feeling awful. This is a game. In the end, this is just a game, where if you die you respawn at a save or checkpoint. You know that, but... you never expected all of this to seem so real...
You place a hand in your cheek, Fenrir's words echoing in your mind.
'It hurts doesn't it? That means it is real...this isn't a game.' It's what they had said. Ironic, they felt all the more heavy now that you actually were in a game. You can make these type of mistakes in a game but...
'What if it had been real... in one of thoe Wonderlands..."
The thought scares you. You were reckless, didn't think about things and got both you and Verde wiped because of that. You have to do better, can't let something like that to happen again, both the wipe and your careless behavior. Heh, maybe this game could help with that a bit.
You finally break the hug and then realize what you were doing but before you can start rambling excuses Verde interrupts you.
"My apologies, Master." Huh? "I wasn't able to protect you against the lowest level enemies of this world. I have already failed you."
"Wha-no! You didn't fail me or anything, in fact, its the opposite, I was the one that failed there! I was careless and didn't paid attention. We both ended up being wiped by those monsters because I didn't took it seriously when I should have. We... I could have avoided this. If this was real...."
"Master, excuse this unit's words but you made no real mistake. Most users are defeated by starting monsters because of being ill prepared. You went to face an unknown, and your backup, this unit, wasn't up to par with what this world demanded. This unit could have healed you Mastes. I could have used my skills as well as give advice for the battles that'll happen. You were at no real fault Master. Don't greve over a mistake with no real consequences."
That's not...
"No, you're..." A thought crossed your mind, and you didn't like it, but you know its the right thing to do. "Verde, you're right, you made a grave error. I'm inexperienced with all things related to this world. I need you to help me and teach me of it, so I can stand in my own too feet and do my part as well."
"Understood, Master." A deep bow, again. You know they'll comit this to memory, somehow you're sure of that. But there's also something they have to understand and it is better if you adress it right now.
"Verde, this is an order for you. From now on, don't look over my mistakes and errors and claim them as you own." Despite having no facial expression the fact that they raised their head tells you enough. Before they can say anything you continue. "I made mistakes too. Just as I said, I'm inexperienced, practically have no knowledge of this, but that isn't an excuse. I could have asked for help, advice, I could have run away with you. I was careless. Don't deny that. We both made mistakes here, of different types. But we will learn from them. So, from now on, tell me when I make a mistake if you believe I have done so. I'm not all high and mighty, I'm just a person. There's nothing special about me aside from the maybe being able to feel things here a bit too real. Verde, let's both keep this experience in mind, and lets both learn from it. Alright?"
Cheesy, at least you think it is cheesy. You heard something similar from someone else before, in a tale about a master blacksmith teaching their new student. Something about not being soft and telling things how they are if you are to help others growth. It is something that has kind f stuck with you since you were younger.
There is a bit of silence until Verde nods and answers.
"Understood, Master." You really hope they actually did. "Forgive this unit, Master, but there is information that this unit can't comprehend. You used the idea of 'reality' twice so far, what would Master mean with that?"
"Oh, well that's simple I guess. This is a game right?" A nod. "When users aka players die, they respawn right?" another nod. "What I mean with if it were real, is that if something like that happened outside the game, it would have been final... no respawns, no second tries. Just, it would be the end. If this wasn't a game, you would have been gone forever, Verde... and that scared me."
But, you already decided that you won't allow something like that to happen. Ever.
"Understood. However, there is no need to worry Master. This unit has the same status as an User, therefore a cease of this body functions would simply lead to a respawn of this unit, just like it happened. Now, this unit would like to question your second use of the term 'real', if it isn't a problem for you, Master."
"Yeah, I know. Sill not gonna be reckless. And it isn't a problem Verde. In fact, feel free to ask me anything you may want. I may not answer everything, but what I can I will try to answer the best I can. About that question... ummm... I need some frame of reference I guess...?" You look around until you spot a patch of grass near you. You move a bit and pass your hand/claw over it. You can feel it, clearly, each individual leaf. "Tell me, Verde. Can user feel in this world? Rather, what human senses does this world emulates?"
"Currently Eternia, aside from the fundamental sight and hearing, allows users dulled versions of what are called taste, touch, smell and sensations of pain. These last ones are speifically dulled almost completely, and only precent what has been described as 'An annoying feeling' by users when they are being hit. Other users have described it as 'A feeling of a low weak electric shock'. This configuration is the latest one as of this model's reassigment to Master Angel."
Well, that makes thing easier for you. You can feel things here. It all feels too real, the warmth of the sun, the cold of Verde's metal frame, the grass in your palm, the smells around you. Pain isn't fully there though. You felt something like dulled pain, but you still recognized it as pain, rather than an 'annoyance' or 'electric shock' that apparently others have described. So you can feel less pain that the real world but more than anyone else here. Great.
"Well Verde, take that information as reference and liste. I have enable my sense of touch. I can smell the fragances in the air, I can feel each individual piece of this patch of grass my hand is on, I could feel the cold of your frame, and I felt more pain than a simple 'shock' but nowhere near as strong as pain outside this game. I assume that isn't normal, is it?"
"That... should no be possible at all Master Angel. While the increment of pain would be a clear violation of international VR regulations the systems that make up the world of Eternia don't allow for complex sensory signals. This unit advices to give a report to the management system designed to aid the users in any problem they find."
"I... will pass on that, Verde. At least for now. I don't think they would believe me." Just sending a note saying stuff like 'I can feel pain in this world' woud attrackt lots of attention, both good and bad. Specially bad if this is more than just a game as you think. The words [Artificial Wonderland] still linger on your mind.
You sigh, get up, and then lend a hand to Verde. They actually blink, for reals, but they just grasp your hand as you pull them up.
Again, before they start something about Master/Servant stuff you talk before they can.
"Alright, let's try this again, shall we? This time well take it one step at a time and have a better plan than just going in hoping for the best."
"Roger that, Master."
And with that you both once again descend into the 9th floor. Not too long passes before you encounter a monster there though. In the hallway you're in at the moment you see a single robot with its back turned towards you. It's still far enough that you could just turn around and it wouldn't notice, but this is the only way fowards. What luck that of encountering a monster in the very first hallway after the stairs.
"Master, I propose to make a plan of action against that enemy. Currently we can get an early start if we start a battle with it."
"Sounds good, better to beat it up quick before it can do that noise thing that attrackts more of them. So, any advice on battles? How do they work?"
"Of course, Master. Allow me to explain the battle system of [Eternal Odyssey]"
Indivduals and enemies all have HP, hit points. When they reach 0 the subject in question is unable to battle further. Each individual has access to skills, they can be used at anytime during a battle but after use hae a cooldown period based on turns.
There will be a minimun of 3 encounters per floor, difficulty based on how high a a d20 roll is. Who win an attack will be decided by a d100 for both parties, modifiers variable.
Skills have their own rules. Status effect skills have their own d20, for both parties. If there is resistance an ammount is substracted from the dice roll, if there is a weakness to it the opposite.
These are the basic rules.
Current party stats:
Angel
HP: 50/50
Skills: Support songs (attack/defense +10 modifier) Duration 3T cooldown 5T / charm song (20% sucess chance). Duration 3T, cooldown 6T
Verde
HP: 40/40
Skills: Heal (25 health) cooldown 7T / rejuvenating sap (regen 8 health) duration 4T cooldown 8T / lunge (+15 modifier) cooldown 5T.
"That's the basics of fighting in this world. Of course, how you move, aim, and approach a situation is ultimately decided by the user."
"Alright... I think I got it. Well, I think I have an idea of what to do here."
Plan of action

Alright, this was longer than I expected but here's an update. I honestly hadn't planned on battles at first but they would come eventualy. Those rules there are the basic ones that will always apply. Unique ones are, well, unique to the situation. Feel free to ask anything or critique anything. I'll be modigying the information post/threadmark once I wake up, it's past midnight here
Also, despite a total wipe happening right away it is a good thing that it happened this early on in my opinion.
