Through the Looking Glass (Into a Magical Girl setting)

I guess I should be more upfront with what the choices are. So! Toy fox is debuffer, toy plant is healer, pick the one you want I guess!

[X] Toy plant

We're a buffer/debuffer as is-I figure we'd want some sort of straight-up fighter as a companion but barring that? I guess a healer.

I'd classify the MC as mostly support with one or two debuff uses, fox is pure debuff.

@veekie @wingstrike96 @Nevill sorry for the direct message but I wanted to ask you to look at your votes again. I should've given more info but anyways:

Fox is debuffer, plant is healer. I'll mark it on the choice at the end of the chapter, sorry for not being more upfront on what the options are for.

I thought I had made it too vague for it to be kind of recognized, so yeah, my bad on that.

When you passed through the mirror, you expected that, in the best case, Lupin would be with you, maybe in some kinda cute animal form to make things easier. At worst they wouldn't be able to come and were left behind. What you didn't expect was them grabbing your hand tight while you crossed, and what that most probably caused.
Thinking back on it, it was for the best probably. Your initial idea was th hide them in your house for most of the day while you were away most of the week at work, hoping that they wouldn't cause problems. The idea was dumb, not only would the loneliness cause them to probably go out at some point, there was no way you could leave them behind just like that in an unknown place for them. Well, now they will always be around and close for you to watch, after all, it seems as if they became your shadow.

Literally. Lupin sort of... became your shadow!

You have repeated this to yourself for a while in an effort to make it less weird but to no avail, your mind is all over the place becuase of this. What, how, why, what, another what, and the like just pop up in your mind every few seconds. And, no matter how hard you think of it, you can't really come close to any kind of answer.

[...]

"W-w-what!?"

[...?]

"Y-you, I, ah... n-no it's... it's not fine. I'm okay... just... confused..."

[...]

"No! No no, it's nothing bad, I think. Just, I don't know what's going on anymore." You wonder if this is like for those cases of adrelanine wearing off or something. Everything comes crashing down and then you realize that everything that happened was real and oh gods what even is going on.

[...]

"It's fine, Lupin. It's fine..." When did you get so used to the name you gave them? What happened, why is your shadow stirring and taking the form of Lupin's silhouette vaguely. Is this real? You ask yourself.

[...]

!?

"L-lupin... did... did you read my thoughts?"

[___...] You heard them, sort of. It's not like they're talking with words, but, you can make out what they mean to say. Can Lupin hear this? Hello? Test test? ... silence... okay, maybe they don't read thoughts but...

[...?] "Uh? No I'm fine." [...] "You... felt I was worried?" [...] "... how?" [...?] "Uh... that's... smething..."

Feelings uh, not only you can read theirs but they can read yours. There's much to think over right now but you body and mind are tired already. Is Lupin tired as well?

[...]

Well, there's the answer. This time you directed the feeling of concern towards them and they aswered. Seem's they're tired too. And from the soft whimper you hear in the back of your mind you assume they are trying to understand what's going on as well. It's fine, you direct at them. You know very little, they do as well, you won't get any answer right now. You're tired and resting on the floor and don't wanna get up yet. You wonder...

'Can you hear this?' [...!] Well, that's an answer. This should make things easier. You're going to have to be more careful in regards of your thoughts as so not to voice them to Lupin by accident but it certainly is miles better than the alternative of talking to air. You've seen enough shows to know what that can bring forth. Not to mention that it just looks weird.

Haaa... well, no use standing on the ground doing nothing. You decide to get up, talk in your mind with Lupin to get used to it, and show them around while you both get used to this. Wonder how late it is...

---
---

Mondays are not that great of a day for most, including you. Even more so with the hard time you had sleeping last night. Nothing to do with Lupin actually. In fact, you kind of aparently share some kind of lucid dream or mind space while sleeping and you sorted a bunch of things out while in there. They enoyed spinning around while floating in the air. It was nice to see them like that.
Regardless, no, that wasn't it. Turns out that what gave you trouble sleeping was the discovery that time passed as normal while you were over there at that other side or [Wonderland] as whatever thing you have called it. A good portion of the night was spent trying to come up with an explanation as to why time seemed to travel side by side with that of your home dimension in comparison to the other time you went to one of those places and a bunch of time there was mere minutes here. Either way you came up short of any answer, didn't slept that much and as a result you're in Leona's coffee shop to try and get you awake with a that black liquid.

"Had a rought night?" There are a few people around the place but it doesn't seems like anyone is really paying attention to the young guy looking miserable on the counter talking with the lady behind it. "Here's your coffee, we also have a few sandwiches in the morning for those that missed breakfast if you're interested."

"That would be nice... and no, just had trouble falling asleep in time..." You sip the coffee, it reinvigorates your soul.

"Some nights are just like that." A plate with a grilled cheese sandwich is placed in front of you, the smell makes your mouth water and when you taste it, it's perfect. You've always been a fan of simple breakfast like this, but with the way you're tired it makes it taste better.

"So, shouldn't you be doing your job instead of being here? I'm kind of glad you came, given that face you have though."

"Mm? Oh no, not really. I had forgotten but today the shop is closed. It's restocking day, gonna reorganize the displays, put up some new things, store some old ones, clean up, that stuff. So I figured I could take some time for some coffee."

"I see I see. Well mondays are usually busy for me so will have to cut the talk shot. See ya later boss man!" And with that she heads off to another room of the building. You finish your coffee, sandwich, and leave for your shop.

[...!] 'Yeah, she's nice.' [...!] 'Eh? you can taste the food I eat?' [...] 'Another one to the pile of questions... eh don't bother for now. We'll find out soon enough probably.' [...?]

You had been chatting in your head with Lupin while you opened the door of the shop, instaltly closing it from the inside and leaving the 'closed' sign as it was. Not bothering to open the curtains either, don't want people to look in and see no one around as if you were goofing around.

'Today we're going to a place that may have some answers to this. Remember?' [...!] 'Yeah... also if I'm right we should have time to spare there. Maybe...'

Looking around you see the bookshelf with the door beneath it. Seeing the bookshelf also reminds you that you gotta clean up this place. Well, may as well get things done first, it wouldn't take more than an hour or two, and you have the whole day and more to do so.

---
---

Organizing done, you got your satchel ready for the travel and got to the room with the mirror.

[...] 'Yeah, I have to clean it up someday.' [...?] 'Now? Well it would take a while... maybe the whole morning.' [...] 'You think there may be something around here?' [...!] 'Mmm...'

True you could clean the place, aside from the mirror you have no idea what's here. You have only been here once before after all. Yet again, it would probably use up all of your day, and who knows when you'll get some time to check this place again. Lupin seems eager about this though for some reaon.

[] Clean up (Lupin bond+, ???)
[] Go through the mirror (???, ???)

Not much at the moment, but yeah you have some free time to do one of these things. By the by, if you're wondering about the "bond' thing is a thing that'll I'll explain a bit later, it's at 5/10 right now though. If you want you can check it anytime at the info threadmark. Also did a quick sketch to give an idea of the bunny look. I'll probably use images from other places since I don't feel I can draw every character I come up with in this, sorry.

Clean up
[X] Clean up (Lupin bond+, ???)

If you don't do it know you'll probably never get to it aren't you? Well may as well get started. [...!]

It was a bit more work than you expected, first figuring out how to get rid of the dust without just moving it to a corner, the broken furniture there seemed to be around, polishing everything. Regardless, it just took up a few hours. All the while you spend talking with Lupin about stuff, ike how they saw the world, what they thought about this side, what did they think about being a shadow and how they felt about it. Their answer were like they saw everything like looking up, as if the sky was in front of them, also said that this side was a lot more grey than the other. More squary too. About being a shadow they didn't mind it, and when you asked what they felt of it, they showed happiness and a sense of safety.

While they didn't really talk with words you could still sort of make out what they wanted to express. It was weird, but as you talked you started getting used to it, saying a few jokes here and there that they didn't understand. They still didn't even after you explained them, and then you tried to explain what jokes were.

After everything was done it seemed to be nearly midday. The whole morning went away with work but the placce looked a lot better. The room was this soft green color that wasn't bothersome to the eyes, there was a chest in a corner that had nothing but more dust on it, a few empty boxes for some reason, and the stuff you piled up to trow out. The most interesting thing was finding a notebook of sorts. You have no idea how old t was but it seems moths got to it and had eaten most of the pages so it was practically useless. The most you could take out of it was that it was about gears, maybe, it showed a few gears here and there, and numbers. Again, pretty destroyed notebook. You decided to throw it out since it had no use.

When you went up and left things on place you realized that you were quite dirty, because your hands left a mark on the bookshelf when you pushed it, which you had to clean. You were filled with dust and dirt, but regardless you felt good, like you accomplished something. Lupin seemed to agree on the sentiment given the wave of happyness they emited to you in yur mind. Calling it a day you opened the door and quickly stumbled upon someone you had forgotten had been around for a while in this place.

"..."

"..."

You had completely forgot about Mapple, which in all fairness, wasn't that hard given that you only knew her for a few days. You didn't expect her to hang out in your shop every day or something.

"... I thought you closed this place and declared bankrupt."

Ouch. Your shop doesn't do that bad! In fact, it does pretty okay, and it will do even better with the new lineups!... probably...

"No, I just took this day to update what's in display and in store, also to clean up. What are you doing here by the way? Don't you have school or something?"

"Not really, and I just like it here. It's calm." She answered while rocking back and forth on her feet. Despite saying that she didn't had school she seemed to be around with a backpack.

"Well, I ain't going to open today, so you'll have to find somewhere else to be, sorry."

She stared right at you, amber eyes showing the fustration she was feeling as she pouted. "I don't have where to go. I have to waste time till 5 or so."

"Eh? Why?" She could go to her house, but now that you think of it, a kid walking alone from here to the residential area isn't a good idea.

"I have to wait for someone that's free at that hour at the most earliest. Can't you just leave me inside for a while and come back for me later?"

What. "That's stupid, one, cannot leave you trapped in there just like that, second, what guarantee do I have you aren't gonna consume all the books there while I'm gone." She's giving you an incredulous look. [...?] 'I'll tell you later.' "Do you really have nowhere else to go?"

"Nope." That was a fast answer. "So, are you gonna let me in or not?"

"Nope." Can't do that. But you can't simply leave her alone either so... maybe you have an idea where she could be. "Follow me, I know where you can be for a while." You go to grab her hand but stop when you remember that you're dirty all over. "Uh... just follow me."

She just looks at you, shrughs, and then follows you... for a few steps before you open a door and say "Here." It's te coffe shop in front of your own.

She's giving you a look right now though you don't pay it attention.

"Oh hey boss man! Donde al... why are you covered in so much dirt?"

"Cleaning, look this here is Mapple, Mapple meet Leona, Leona meet Mapple. She has to stay here for a whie but my shop is closed for the day so can you take care of her thanks see you later!"

That went well. You purposely went straight to the point and skipped information so that they would be too shocked to ask questions. You saw it in mangas before, and while it sounds dumb, it seems to have worked. The responsibility isn't in your hands anymore.

"... you never told me you had a daughter."

You almost fall over from that sentence but just ignore it and keep walking. No looking back, just keep walking, get back home.

...

[...?] 'She's not my daughter!'

---
---

"... So that's Mapple, just a girl that hangs around in that place I work in." [...]

After a good shower and a change of clothes you were having some lunch, some quick pasta and fries [...!] that Lupin seemed to like. Actually, they seem to like any food you have.

[...] "It's not like she's my responsibility, and Leona seems like a good person." [...?] "Well... it's true I don't know her that well either but..." [...] "... yeah I know. I'll go back and apologize." [...!]

...

Well looks like you're going back there. It's only been an hour so it's around 1pm, still early in the day. Mapple said she had to wait till 5 or so, you doubt you could spend all that time waiting with her. Maybe you could check the mirror, again it's still early, and time seems... slower? in that place. You could also just check other areas of the mall, maybe take Mapple with you as a way of apologizing.

When you get back what will you do?

[] Wait with Mapple, after apologizing. Chat a bit, get to know her better maybe. (Form bond, ???)
[] Go through the mirror. It's early, you have time. Though leaving Mapple alone again gives you a bad taste in the mouth. (???)
[] Take a look around the mall, despite working there you haven't seen much of it.
-[] Ask Mapple if she wants to come with you, as apologies (Optional, won't form bond.)

[X] Wait with Mapple, after apologizing. Chat a bit, get to know her better maybe. (Form bond, ???)
*thinks* Eh, could be worse people to get to know, and we could use some info on this new-found double-life thing.

The trip back to the mall was uneventful. Out of your dirt work clothes and into more comfortable ones you made your way around. It's around lunch time so not many people are out in the street like early morning, which makes the walk silent and lets you think. You wonder if Mapple has had lunch... probably not. You'll have to buy her something probably... well, at least you have some money to spare for that. Once you got to the mall you took the time to look around and see if there is a good place for lunch, you spotted 3 on your usual road. After some debate you decided to just go for some fast food ad bought some to take. A small hamburger, some fries and these things called 'empanadas'. They were little things that were mostly bread doubh and cheese. Sure it wasn't the healthiest lunch, but it was fast and easy to carry, so you went with it. Once you got to the coffee shop you entered to see Raphael cleaning tables and Leona giving Mapple a glass of milk.

"Well look who's here, told you he wasn't gonna leave you here kid." You heard a bit of grumbling from Mapple. "Alright dad man, kid here thought you weren't gonna come but I was sure you would pull through."

You hear Raphael snicker in the back as Leona just grins playfully. "Don't leave your daughter just like that in an stranger shop next time, you are lucky I'm a good person or else I wouldn't allow it."

"He's not my dad." Said Mapple annoyed. Huh, for some reason you thought she would use that to annoy you rather that being annoyed by it.

"She's not my daughter." You say as well, sitting besides her on the counter. To be fair it you don't find it funny either. You barely know Mapple as well, which makes you wince after thinking about what you did.

"Sure could've folled me." You sigh, so does Mapple. "See?"

"We aren't-" You both start to say at the same time, making both Leona and Raphael burst out laughing. "Look, let's drop that okay? It's gonna get old soon anyways."

"Eh, true enough. But little miss here really thought you were just gonna leave her here, I figured you weren't that type of person. Also while I was joking about you being her dad, I assumed you may be a brother or cousin. You do look a bit alike..."

You doubt it, but eh, sometimes people look alike to others for the smallest things. "I ain't. Met the kid recently, she spends time on my shop for some reason. Couldn't let that be today."

Leona just humms and nods. Then looks at Mapple in a serious way, but not serious enough to make her notice. You can sort of guess what she's thinking, why is there a kid alone in the mall at these hours. You can't help but wonder if there is a reason for-

"Why did you come?"

-Eh? You turn to the side to Mapple giving you a harsh stare. "I'm not your responsibility, so why come back?"

That... wasn't a question you were expecting. The way she asked seemed a bit rude, specially with the way she's looking at you. Completely unlike the other days. Regardless, you came back for a reason.

"Well... I wanted to apologize for what happened. I mean, dropping you here suddenly. I wasn't gonna leave a kid alone, no matter how mature they are. So yeah! I'm sorry for that!" You bow your head a bit as well to show that you're sorry. She just keeps looking at you like there's someting on your face.

Eventually she stops and turns back, eyeing her milk. "... it's fine... I'm not mad." She goes back to drinking her milk. She's still giving you some glances now and then, and it is making you a bit umcorfotable. Leona maybe seems to have an idea of what is going on? You think so becuase she just motions for Raphael to follow her to the back and leave you two alone.

[...?] 'I don't know what's going on. Why is the atmosphere so suffocating?'

...

[...] 'Yeah... probably the best thing to do.'

You get tired of this atmosphere and decide to disrupt it with food. So you simply drop the food you brought in front of her and wait for a reaction.

"... what?" Success!

"I figured you wouldn't have eaten lunch yet, so I got you something from this place a few blocks down the road. I know it's just some fast food, but I couldn't think of much else..."

Once again she's giving you that stare, as if you had grown a second head or something. Seriously she was never like this before!

... was she?

You don't really know her, sure you've talked to her a few times in these past few days but can you really say you know how she is? You can't really.

"... why?" And once again she questions it as if was the weirdest thing in the world. You may be overthinking it but this, coupled with how much she seems t is painting a pretty awful picture in your mind and you're not going to think about that. [...?] 'It's nothing, it's nothing.'

You breath a bit and then answer her. "I just thought you'd be hungry. Is that so weird?"

Mapple stays silent for a few minutes, looking at the food and at you every now and then. This is honestly making you uncomfortable.

...

You sigh, and apologize again. "I'm sorry for leaving you just like that."

"... I said it's fine."

"Is it really?"

"If I say I forgive you will you stop being so mopey?"

"Eat the food as well and stop being mopey yourself and it's a deal." She actually chuckles a bit at that, which makes you smile a bit. Small victory eh.

"Fine, apology accepted." Then she goes for the food and starts eating. The atmosphere is still a bit weird but not as much as before.

...

"So... I'm Michael. Pretty sure I introduced myself before. I think. I run that manga shop over there, as you know, since you've spent a few mornings there."

"Why the sudden introduction?"

"I figured I may as well introduce myself properly. I have an habit of not doing that till after a while of knowing someone."

"That's a bad habit... but, I kind of have it too I guess." She finish her burger and looks at you. "Guess I'll do it too. I'm Mapple, I just like to hang around your store because it is, calm? Yeah calm... I'm not some little kid that needs to be looked after too... but, thanks for the food. I appreciate it."

You simply smile and nod. The weird mood is gone, mostly, so you simply sit in a comfortable silence for a while. It doesn't last long though, becuase Leona and Raphael come out of the back room shortly after. Leona rases an eyebrow after seeing the food on the counter.

"Heh, guess you're not so bad of a father are you?" You and Mapple both grumble at that. Leona just chuckles but you were right, that joke got old. Fast. Really fast.

"Anyways, we're fine with you staying here for a while... Mapple, was it?" A nod. "We have a room in the back for breaks if you want to wait, or if you need to make a call andd have someone come for you I can lend you my phone."

"No it's okay. I'm waitng for a friend. She's busy with school till latter so yeah, I have to waste time." As Leona opens her mouth to ask a question Mapple quickly says "Homeschooled." and Leona just closes her mouth. She looks at Mapple for a while, as if debating saying something, but ultimately she just sighs.

"I'll stay too." You say, surprising Leona and Mapple apparently. "I don't think it's the best idea to leave her alone. Also I already came back so yeah."

"Hmmm, well that makes things easier for me. Customers will be coming soon, can't really keep a look on her all the time. Also since you're here..." Leona grins a mischevious grin and holds something to you. It's a... game? Wait... this isn't...!? "So Raphael here has been bugging me all day about trying this thing but I don't really have the time. It's apparently a popular VR game that he won in a raffle recenty, so since I can't really play it I figured I may as well give it to someone else. You know, not waste it."

"Eh boss..." Raphael seems troubled and was about to say something when Leona shush him. "But boss! I-you can't-Imean, that's prety expensive you know!"

"And you won this extra copy for free right?"

"Well yeah, but I meant to play it with you!" Leona gives him a look and Raphael blushes as he seems to realize what he said, or rather how he said it. "I mean, you can't just give it to random strangers!"

"Michael is no stranger, not to me at least. And I told you, I don't really have the time. Otherwise this would just sit there and accumulate dust. I figured I may as well givve it to someone else if I can't use it, as I said. Seems reasonable right?"

Raphael looks dejected but says nothing. Honestly you get where he's coming from. This game is expensive as he said. Real expensive. It's not just any VR game, but one that has been a global hit for a few years now. One of the most playeds VR MMOs out there. You remember when people joked about how they all would end up trapped in the game day one or fall into a coma sometime later. Thankfully that wasn't the case.

"Besides... I already own a copy myself." Leona scratchs her cheek a bit before letting out a nervous laugh. Raphael looks even more shocked than before, and you're just confused, so is Mapple it seems.

"Hey what's with that game?"

"Ah, I'll tell you later. Let's just say I don't know well what's going on either."

Leona then shoves the game into your hands and claps her hands. "Right! Sorry to impose but I wasn't quite expecting this today and wasn't sure what to do with it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it."

You've got a copy of [Eternal Odyssey]!!

After a while Mapple finish the food and you both head to the room Leona mentioned. It is rather compact but there's more than enough space for you both. There's sofa, a few chairs, a TV, some mangas you vaguely recognize in a shelf and... a VR helmet/chair set!? You look at the game in your hands and then at the chair. This feels weird.

"Umm... so what is with that game?" Oh right, you said you'd explain it, so you do! A quick explanation about the game and the popularity of it. Also about the fact that it is really expensive usually, mostly because it being VR, like one of the few inmersive VR games out there. Mapple has the same weired look as you do after the explanation, and also looks at the chair after you point out it is the latest model optimized for this game.

"Well... you can try it if you want? I don't know much about games. I'll just watch some TV for a while." Mapple then just sits down in the sofa and turns out the TV, flipping through channels.

You initially discard the idea of trying the game, but thinking about it, Leona probably gave it to you knowing about the VR set on this room, so she may expect you to play it for some reason. You could do that or just watch TV with Mapple, keep her company.

What to do?

[] Might as well try the game out, what can happen after all?
[] Just watch TV with Mapple, you'll find some time for the game later.

[X] Might as well try the game out, what can happen after all?

Mapple keeps on changing channels on TV whle you just look at the chair and then at the TV. Eventually you deide to just try out the game. You're sure Leona knew about the VR set here when she gave you the game, and who knows when you'll get a chance to buy one of your own? You have money saved but still. Regardless you decide to sit down, plug the game in and try it out. What can happen after all?

It takes you a few minutes to set the thing up but after a bit you're ready. You can't help but shake a bit with anticipation. VR has been around for a while by now, but you've never really been able to try it out. And now you have the chance to play one of the most famous games not just in VR but in general. Turning the power on, the VR helmet activates sending you to a black void...

You are very confused right now. You also wonder how long you've been falling for, the only way you know you're falling is that some areas at the edge of your vision seem to have become bigger, though they're still small. Just how hight in the sky are you?

You try to stop your spinning, which thanks to the messages you had forgotten, and eventually settle yourself in a sort of freefall that allows you to look at what is in front of you.

It is, quite honestly, beautiful.

The green sean contrast with the orange sky as the sun shines on the horizon, not strong enough to make your eyes close, though your visor seems to be helping. You can see some dots that you guess are islands given the bigger ones vaguely resemble some from this point. To your left you can see a forest, a tower rising high into the sky above the clouds which you apparently passed through without realizing. There are some castles and what seems to be ruins on the opposite side of your vision. Therey seem to be... floating... some of them at least.

As you fall this giant, whale thing, pass by you, giving a gentle cry as it swim in the air towards one of the towers that go to the sky, this one coming out of the sea. You are sure those are buildings on its back, as well as some trees.

A roar catch your attention as an actual big flying blue dragon pass by way below you, its eyes loc on yours briefly before it dives towards the ruins you saw before. You spin unintentionally, now facing the sky, which lets you see some type of airships, not quite spaceships but close, dash through the clods over to some big dome in the distance.

That and a number of others quite fantastical things catch your attention as you continue to fall, wind literally on your back and the gentle warmth of the sun seems to calm you down.

Oh right!! You forgot about those messages! What are they anyway. A bright light starts enveloping you as you ask to the air. "Who are you?"

Before you can ask what any of that means the light intensifies and you suddenly feel yourself phasing through something, as if you had fallen into water. Only to suddenly feel the floor on your back. From the light *thud* kind of sound to the spiraling portal thing that just dissapeared you assume you were dropped wherever you are. Maybe a different person would be less calm but you had a lot of falling time to calm down and think to yourself.

[Welcome to the world of Eternal Odyssey!]

The message appears in a different type of box from the ones beforehand, this one seems to be more aimed towards the general area you're in rather than at youself, like previous ones.

[Whenever you wish to log out just open the MENU command and use LOG OUT command. We hope you have a great time in the world of Eternal Odyssey.]

And like that the message banish. Menu? [Menu]?

Can you really log out? [Log out]

[Are you sure you want to quite the game? Y/N]

Well seems like you can. This has certanily been something, and you have no idea what to think about it or what to do right now.

What will you do right now?
[] Log out, ask questions. This isn't normal, is it?
[] Close the menu. You'll try to make sense of things here.

Yeap. Just gonna say this choice decides where you'll be for a while. Not really sure how this update came out, so feel free to say what you think of this so far.

Hrrrm...
So we can learn from within the game or from without...I'm inclined towards within the game, strange as it sounds-I've not seen signs of positive bleed through in terms of our powers into the real world, so I'd rather not tango with whoever made the game in the 'real' world in case it turns out they're unfriendly. Better to do so 'within' the game where we can fight back there, and possibly use the fact that we aren't reliant on 'artifical' diving devices to enter this world.
