This I Protect (Worm/Rising of the Shield Hero)

The dichotomy between the two, just the fact that Sophia and Taylor both have someone to polish their respective philosophies against, can only be a good thing. For all that Sophia is hailed as the next worst thing to the Slaughterhouse in the fandom for her predator/prey philosophy, Taylor's Greater Good/My Way Or The BEEES! can be just as bad if not worse if left unchecked.

I look forward to more debates, both verbal and practical.

It was a hot and slightly muggy day but despite the humidity, Taylor found herself in the backyard in an old pair of blue jeans and a white tank top. Her shield currently had the appearance of green lacquered wood, shaped like a leaf, the lacquer providing the shading with edges lined with silver. Taylor had dug out the gardening hand tools from the basement and used some of her allowance saved up to buy some seeds. This shield was more subtle with its knowledge, Taylor didn't find herself automatically knowing everything to do with the seeds just by looking at them but when she got to planting them that's when she knew how deep she needed to go and if she wanted a place without shade or with a lot of shade. Same with watering the plot she just got the feeling that was enough and when she should do it again, Taylor actually found her time with this shield rather underwhelming but with her dad negotiating her contract with the PRT this was how she spent her time waiting for everything to be settled.

Cooking, sewing, and gardening, Taylor only had to pick up some kind of cleaning shield and she'd be the perfect housewife. Behold, Mighty Mom, the secret lair of any team she joins up with will feel right at home. Taylor would be bored but there were just so many surprises to her power that she was trying to figure out what her shield was capable of. She'd managed to find one more shield from her household stuff completely by accident when she picked up the teakettle off the stove without a hot pad, one of the first times she actually felt some pain since getting her power. She'd regretted the injury and had an excuse to use her pain relieving shield while she was running her hand under some cool water. Cursing herself and thinking she was invulnerable now when she actually wasn't, Taylor really wanted this whole waiting business to be over and actually do something with her powers that mattered. At this point she was seriously considering Sophia's offer yesterday to go out on a patrol with her.

The other bright spot was that already Taylor was starting to see results from her gardening which was a lot faster than she had expected the packets she'd gotten had said it would take around two weeks for something to show and here it was day three and she was seeing some blades of green coming out from where she had planted. Danny opened the back door and came out to where she was staring intensely at the plants and joined her, "Those are coming along good."

Taylor nodded, "They're growing really fast so now I'm wondering if this shield just did something to the seeds, to the ground I used, to the water I've been using and I just haven't realized it. If I were to stop using the leaf shield would they return to their ordinary growth patterns or would whatever is increasing their growth be gone and they'd just die? If its the soil, is it temporarily changed or is it permanently changed? Could I just take a walk through some farmer's field, throw some seed, and then they experience 500% increase in growth for their crops from that field? Could I end world hunger just with this shield?"

Danny patted her on the head, "You really do think a lot. That's good, means you got a good head on your shoulders but if you wanted to be a farmer I wish you'd told me earlier. Then I wouldn't have spent so much time on getting this done."

Danny held out a thick stack of papers, stapled together at the top and looking three times as thick as the original version of the contract that Taylor had seen, with those little stickers in blue, green, and red attached on the edges. Taylor could hardly believe her eyes, it was finally done. Taylor shifted her shield to the book shield as grabbed the document, the blue and green stickers had been attached to places that her Dad and the PRT had already signed off on and were the majority, while the red ones were places that Taylor needed to initial and sign. There weren't many of them and her Dad explained, "As your parent, my signature is what really matters, getting my permission, for all the things that will and could happen. Still even if you are underage, they still need your signature in a few places to make sure that you aren't completely unaware of whats expected of you."

Taylor wrote her name in cursive in the five or six places that needed her signature and her initials in print in the twenty places that laid out behavior and conduct for her as a member of the Wards. Taylor was practically bouncing up and down as she put in the final signature and went to give the papers back to her Dad, "When do we get to go to headquarters to turn this in?"

Danny refrained from taking them, "There's a van out front waiting to take you there I had a feeling that you would want to go over as soon as possible. I've taken off nearly all my paid days off I'd saved by this point so I need to go into work this afternoon before they wonder why they're paying me. Have fun and stay safe and I'll see you in the morning."

Taylor hugged her Dad, "Thanks Dad."

Taylor ran into the house, even if the van was waiting for her, she needed to get into costume before she headed out. She didn't much see the point considering she couldn't hide her identity but she'd taken Sophia's advice and fashioned herself a light brown leather domino mask with rawhide strings but she didn't care for it much since it made her look more like a highwayman then a hero. She also passed a comb through her frizzy hair but trying to tame the locks was a losing battle with the time that she had, maybe she should have gone with the bandanna and hat but then she would have looked like some kind of pirate. Taylor fretted for a moment when she heard a knock on her door, it was her Dad, "Taylor, it's been almost thirty minutes, if you want I can tell the driver to come back at a later time. Couple of hours? Tomorrow? Sometime next week?"

Taylor shouted through the door, "No, I'm ready now. Don't you dare."

Taylor gave herself one last look over in the mirror before grabbing the signed contract and opening the door to see her Dad waiting there and his eyes widen as he looked at her. Taylor was surprised as he gave her a big grin, "Dad are you crying?"

Danny shook his head, "Course I am, I'm allowed to do that when my daughter makes me proud."

Taylor gave her Dad one last hug and a wave goodbye as she ran out the door and to the van that would take her to become an official member of the Wards finally. Her days of being bored at home were over.
