This I Protect (Worm/Rising of the Shield Hero)

has she tried feeding/creating (don't remember the exact change you made) jewellery with/into the shield? the accessory shield was pretty inconspicuous iirc

also, if she tried to use the baseball bat as a baseball bat instead of a blunt weapon, to block balls would that unlock a baseball shield?

can she absorb something like a freesbee and get a trowing shield? or a crossbow and get a crossbow shield? can she trick her shield with tinker made shields that have secondary effects, like a tinker shield that also functions as a gun or a bow or a laser riffle?

One thing I didn't like in Shield Hero is that he couldn't take off the shield. There are other shields that can be used with both hands and not strapped permanently to the arm.

In medieval times Europe: There was a shield with wheels that protected you from arrows that you pushed in front of you over open ground, and another so big it was carried overhead by several people. And there are shields with blades in them.

You should at least enable her to switch arms. As long as its touching the body it could be put on her back or something.

Other than that I'm really liking this fic.

Danny found himself at the Barnes' kitchen table sitting across from Alan, he was pouring over the legalese with a fine tooth comb, while their daughters were upstairs playing a board game, and Zoe and Anne were out doing some last minute supply shopping before Anne officially moved into the dorms in two weeks.

"I'm so glad that July is over with. One of the worst months of my life. Period." Alan sipped from his cup of coffee.

Danny nodded, "Luckily not the worst one I've ever experienced but it was close. I don't know what I would have done if I'd lost Taylor too."

Alan grimaced, "There isn't anything either one of us can do in this kind of world, I was going to say Brockton Bay had really gone to the shitter but what kind of world are we in where even sending your girl to camp can lead to this sort of outcome." Alan underlined a sentence and wrote a short note in the margin.

Danny shook his head, "You talk about it like things weren't just as screwed up when we were young? Remember Lustrum and her group? Remember when we only had two Endbringers and that was terrifying enough? Remember the Crown's? It was a shitty situation back then too but we persevered, found love, made some decent families. World may be shit but that doesn't mean that we still can't find some good in it and protect it."

Alan agreed, "I suppose that's right, if two imperfect men like us can."

Danny watched as Alan continued to make his notes on the copy of Taylor's contract to the Wards, "Thanks for looking the contract over, I know this kind of work isn't your preferred thing to do anymore but it means a lot to me."

Alan shrugged, "It appears to be a rather reasonable contract, but you knew that from looking over it yourself Danny, so why bring it to me?"

Danny felt uncomfortable, "I know I suggested this for her but reading through the questions on what level of danger I would be comfortable placing Taylor in on that one form has me less eager over the idea. I'm pushing her into the Wards so that she won't throw herself into harms way. Theoretical situations where a specific gang isn't named still doesn't help when I know just what the ABB would do to her, or the E88, or the Teeth. Look at this one, would you be comfortable with your child facing an Endbringer? What kind of question is that to ask to a parent?"

Alan nodded, "A shitty one no doubt but one you have to answer. One that all the other Wards had to have answered by their parents. Wouldn't blame you if you were having second thoughts about all of this."

Danny scoffed, "Second? I'm at least to fifth or sixth thoughts by now. At this point I feel like I never should have even brought up the Wards, just grabbed her as soon as I saw that shield and driven off to some small town in the middle of nowhere where no one would bother us."

Alan gave a small smile, "Reminds me of what I was thinking the first time I met Anne's first boyfriend. Less serious for sure but yeah I get the sentiment. Those overprotective father instincts, so why are you sitting at my table instead of packed up and hitting the road if that's what you're thinking now?"

Danny shook his head ruefully, "Probably because it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference if I did, Taylor's too much like her mother. I've seen it in her over the past two weeks, eventually she's going to go running out and be a hero. Doesn't matter if we're here in Brockton Bay or if I go to Kentucky. All I might do is buy myself some time trying to get used to an idea that I don't know if I'll ever get used to. Meanwhile, Taylor will just hate me for taking her away from her friends and home and she would still find some way to use her powers and be a hero. At least in the wards maybe she'll find someone she respects enough to not throw herself in all sorts of danger and stay out of harms way. After how I've acted since Annette's death, it's not going to be me."

Alan flipped to the next page in the contract, "I suppose that is fairly reasonable and thought out. Much better thinking than I've seen from you in years, maybe even a decade."

Danny sighed, "Maybe, anyway back to your original question, reason why I brought it to you is because you're one of the few people that I feel like I can talk to about this sort of stuff. Tell me if running off to the middle of nowhere is actually the better plan."

"Forgive me for saying so but I think you've already done enough running, right into the bottom of the bottle." Alan answered, "From problems that aren't going to go away with time, or at least are going to go away but never be solved. I know it sounds rough but one day Taylor's going to end up leaving home, and you can't protect her so are you going to treat her well so that she'll at least visit on holidays or you going to smother her so that she never comes back?"

Danny nodded, "That's a good one, used that on Zoe didn't you?"

Alan laughed, "Well she's had a couple of times where she's talked about tying Anne up and keeping her safe locked in the basement, seemed similar enough to me. Still you've cut back on the drinking, you're actually talking to us, I think you'll be alright. Out of the almost infinite list of bad choices I don't think you're doing the wrong thing by pushing her into the Wards at all."

Danny sipped from his own mug of coffee, "And what if she dies?"

"Then she'll hopefully be doing it in a way that wasn't unavoidable with the other Wards and Protectorate at her back. Like you said, only a matter of time before she runs off into the gang territories and finds herself in over her head. This way you know she won't be alone and doing something stupid. I don't envy you on this Danny but every parent who's kid decides to join the military, or go to the police academy, or enter a fire department has this same choice in front of them and you can try and stop the kid and end up with a lot of bad blood and hurt feelings or you can be proud of them and trust that things will work out. I'd say that she's in the Wards so how much trouble could they put her into but that questionnaire you're filling out makes me think a lot more than I originally thought." Alan stated.

"She's 13 going on 14, about to enter high school, a bit younger than most of those parents." Danny argued.

Alan nodded and wrote some more in the margins of the paper, "Not younger than the Wards that pop up, though. You want me to stop wasting my time with this contract and pretend like it never happened? I won't even charge you a cancellation fee."

Danny shook his head, "No, you're almost finished with the thing anyway, I might as hear what you have to say about it."

"Alright, the first thing is that this is a fairly solid piece of paperwork, protections for the PRT are pretty well laid out and case precedent would favor them heavily. If they were to hold to the promises and bylines that are in there then it would be difficult for anyone to make a case against them. By the same token, from the previous cases of malfeasance, corruption, blackmail, and the usual skull duggery that any massive government organization tends to participate in, unless you you have loads of paperwork and documents you can provide to a court proving that fact they'll likely get away with it. Even odds that in the process of discovery they would seek to shred any pertinent documents to a case, means it'd be better that you get copies of any documents that are shown to you."

Danny looked at Alan with surprise, "You're talking like they plan to do break the contract before I've even signed it. Besides they're not going to want to give me copies of anything. Security concerns."

Alan shrugged, "Well, maybe not right away but its not an uncommon thing for people to fall through cracks or annoyances to turn into problems that could have been avoided weeks and months later. Problems that should have been handled if they'd followed the contract they gave. Best way to really look at any contract, what aren't they saying and what do they think they can get away with. Fair point about the copies but still make the request, get a safe to put them in, even ask them for something broad that won't reveal sensitive information that you can keep, even if its just the day and time Taylor went on patrol on some official letterhead. The existence of that type of paper makes it harder for them to sweep things completely under the rug. Can't claim there was no mission if they generated the paperwork that there was something that occurred on such and such a date. Next, the money they're offering is a joke considering how many people get powers and how many end up going villain."

Danny nodded, "Yeah, I was planning on arguing that point over with them."

Alan smiled, "Good, as a Union member I expect you to take them for all their worth. Next..."

So it went late on in to the night and the coffee pot was emptied between the two of them.

Nock looked out on her city, New York City, and growled with frustration, she'd been an active hero for almost five years, shown off her skills and usefulness against Endbringers and notorious villain groups like the Wild Cards and the Slaughterhouse Nine but did anyone from the Protectorate listen to her suggestion to put up waypoints on the roofs of buildings for her to grapple and move to with out causing damage to the structure itself during the quarterly hero gathering. No, that was too expensive, waste of a limited resources, the design she suggested would only be useful for her. Of course they were, she didn't know how those other movers powers worked to take that into account and it was really none of her business, leave that to some thinkers and tinkers to come to a solution but instead they just shut her down.

Well suddenly a Ward shows up that also wants to use a bow and suddenly its the smartest thing people have heard ever and the city adding them as part of required building code for any new construction and any old construction needed it added in two years with the city covering the cost. It was completely ridiculous but she supposed she should take some joy in it happening but this city really knew how to suck the fun out of a victory.

"Reporting robbery on 32nd and Park, white male, early twenties, wearing a red shirt and black jeans. Last spotted heading northbound. No powers used. Anyone out there want to take it?"

Really, purse snatching, she should just leave it to the young heroes to deal with. Jumping every time someone said hop was for the foolish and over eager. Still she was kind of close and she'd been up here for almost an hour without spotting anything. She grabbed her radio, "This is Nock on the line, I'll take care of it."

"Acknowledged Nock, he's all yours." The dispatcher told her.

Nock got into a crouch and pulled her bow off her shoulder, it looked like it was made from iron and had a cap over where her hand would grip the bow that had a green gem. Spidershot, Autofill. She pulled back on the string with her other hand and as soon as it was pulled back fully a silver arrow appeared in place, ready to fire, a thin strand of spider silk connected to her bow. Sniper Sight. Nock looked over to a nearby building that should give her a good sight line of Park avenue and had one of those waypoints for her to shoot at. Homing Lock. Nock let go of the string and the arrow flew unerringly towards the metal pole and pierced its solid shell, the distance so far away that Nock didn't even hear what had to be a loud impact. Nock pulled on her bow and in turn felt herself being pulled along the line she had shot until she arrived at the top of the building she'd been aiming for.

The wind at this height made everything colder, but Nock's purple leather outfit was enough to keep her from feeling the chill. Nock took up position on the edge of the building and raised her bow up, Sniper Sight. Objects and people miles away now appeared much closer as if she was staring through a high powered scope, and the people walking by unaware had a pulsing glowing orb on their heads and over their hearts, a visual marker of where if she shot them they'd be dead before they knew what hit them. Luckily Nock had only had to use that feature twice in her career and it wasn't well known that it was a capability of hers.

Eventually Nock's sight picked up her target, he had made it almost six blocks and upon seeing that no one was chasing had come to a stop. He was panting and had one hand against a building while he was looking down at the purse he'd grabbed, Nock could see that it wasn't just a red t-shirt but it had a graphic on the front, the Screaming Demons. Some band if the image of the Devil cracking a poor representation of the Simurgh in half over its knee was anything to go by, Nock had to admit it was pretty cool looking and wondered if they sold it in a woman size. She needed to take the shot though before the thief caught his breath and she decided to use one of her newer bows that she hadn't fully mastered and couldn't just use the skill with the Holy Bow yet. Bright Lord's Bow. The bow changed from its standard look to looking like it was made out of a ghostly blue fire and ethereal, the string becoming a a beam of blue light between the two ends of the bow. Pulling the string back a bright blue arrow of light shone in the night and she used her sniper sight to aim at the thief and activated one of the weapon's skills, "Shadow Strike."

Nock let go of the arrow and watched as it shot forward through the air, flying true to strike the thief in the knee, and then she was there right behind him as he bent down to cradle his knee and cry out in pain only to stare as the arrow disappeared leaving him unharmed, "What? What just happened?"

Nock tapped him on the shoulder, "Trust me its a lot freakier when the arrow hits you in the face."

The thief turned around and upon placing his eyes upon the purple leather outfit, the matching domino mask and the long blonde hair, not to mention the ghost bow she was holding, that he dropped the purse, "Oh shit, Nock."

Nock did enjoy being recognized, "You can wait here for the cops to show up or you can try to run. You're choice."

He shook his head, "Running from you would be impossible. I'll just stay here, I don't want to cause you any trouble."

"Smart boy, now if you don't mind, where'd you get the shirt?"

It was about five minutes later after she announced on the radio that she had him that the cops showed up and took the purse snatcher away as well as the purse to take back to her owner. Nock was wondering if she should bother staying out on such a slow night or call it and go see when the Screaming Demons were playing so she could pick up some of their merchandise. Nock's musings were disrupted however when the phone on her hip started buzzing, looking at the caller ID she grimaced, "What do you want Pike?"

"The shield hero just popped up in Brockton Bay." A gravelly man's voice came through.

Nock gave a sigh of relief, "About damn time, I was afraid that he wouldn't show up till the month before like last time. How old is he this time?"

Silence until finally, "Actually that's why I'm calling you. The Shield Hero is a girl this time."

Nock sputtered, "What? No. Ugh, girls are the worst."

Pike sighed, "You're a girl."

"Exactly, that's how I should know, remember when I was just starting out. You want me to show her the ropes, Pike. No, I'm a terrible teacher. Why don't you do it?" Nock asked.

"I'm in Los Angeles right now trying to dismantle a cult that's trying to induce people to trigger. It's a bad time for me to drop this." Pike explained.

Nock growled, "Then send Edgelord, jackass is way overdue for this. Has he even trained anyone ever?"

"You know why he can't do that Nock." Pike tried to console her but she wasn't having any of it, "Weren't you just complaining to me last week how Legend has been cracking down and now you have hardly anything to do?"

Nock remembered doing exactly that, this is what happened when she tried to be social with Pike, she took measures to avoid interaction with Edgelord, "Fine, I'll do it. Does Shield Hero got a name yet or is Brockton Bay all that you're going to give me and I got to hunt her down like an animal?"

"You won't have to hunt her, she's going to be joining the Wards any day now." Pike shared.

Nock let out a cry of protest, "What!? A ward and a girl? I could have just stayed in New York and teamed up with Fletchette. Heck some people already think she's copying me cause she wanted to be my sidekick and I told her no."

Pike was curious, "Did she want to be your sidekick?"

"The hell if I know, but if she had asked I would have told her to get lost until she proved herself worth my time." Nock shot back.

Pike chuckled, "I guess that's for the best then because now you can go to Brockton Bay without any issues."

"Without any issues? What about my job? What about my boyfriend? What about my cat?" Nock complained.

"Nock, be serious, do you really have any attachment to any of those?" Pike asked honestly.

Nock considered that, she did hate her job, she hadn't seen her boyfriend in three weeks, and the cat had been gone even longer since her last sighting of it, "Yes. They are what make me stay dedicated to being a hero."

Pike sounded exasperated, "I'm hanging up now Nock. You do what you have to and I'll see you, Edgelord, and the Shield Hero in, 4 months, 9 days, 14 hours, and 16 minutes."

True to his word, Pike hung up and Nock was left sputtering at the dead line. She should call him back right now and give him a piece of her mind. She was so mad she even considered calling Edgelord and had his number half dialed before she remembered she hated him and slid the phone back into its pocket. Nock considered just not going to Brockton Bay, it would be such a hassle setting up there and they wouldn't even have the waypoint posts that New York City was putting up. Just her luck, it was her suggestion to improve hero mobility and response times. Using a holy weapon wasn't that difficult, with four months time the Shield Hero was bound to have figured everything out on her own. Or she wouldn't and she'd die and Pike would get disappointed with her.

Nock sighed, well if she was going to spend one last night in New York City she might as well make it a memorable one. Now where did the heads of the Strobers like to party again?

Good chapter. There were a few parts where you used both "he" and "she" so I wasn't sure which was which until you got to the phone conversation. Might want to clean that up. But good. Nice slice of life and info dump.

There really ought to be a term to differentiate between "mashup of two settings A and B" and "setting A with single element X of setting B". Some odd analogy of the unicorn in the garden principle.

Well, there is "Fusion" for the first, and if the only crossover element is a power it's regularly called [crossover fiction] alt!power.

Maybe we need a 1 to 10 crossover scale, though X).

Was not expecting the wave here, and it looks like it's common place for the shield hero to die here too.

"The PRT will open an account for her and depending on her contributions to the city, five thousand dollars a year in an inactive status, twenty thousand dollars a year in an active status, for her to be allowed access at the time of her eighteenth birthday. Every six months at minimum you are required to have a sit down with an agent of the PRT and they will go over with you all of Taylor's after action reports, which you can have as often as you like but they will be shared with you here at headquarters only for security reasons."
Any reason you reduced the pay like that?

They have high pay for capes for a damn good reason, namely that the fact that the Government pay well, mean that fewer capes become Villains for the money, and considering a Villain often inflict millions of damages a year, paying to reduce Villain numbers and increase Hero numbers, is a damn good idea.

20k a year, is probably about how much an adult cape can get, just from showing the government their power, and then promising to not use it for Villainy(I know all capes can get a stipend, I don't know how much it is) paying only that amount to an active cape, just give them incentive to look for better opportunities.

the canon 50k in a Trust fund, and twice minimum wage right away, is enough that unless they have very expensive tastes, they wont be hurting for money, which mean they are unlikely to look for better pay, and considering the Protectorate would like to have 10 times the numbers they have, and have a huge budget, if paying well increase their numbers by even 10%, then it's money well spent, and paying well increase their numbers much more than 10%.

All in all, I must say this change to things, should mean there's fewer Wards, as with less monetary incentive, members from poor families are now more likely to go corporate or Villain, instead of joining the Wards.

The twice minimum wage they are paid immediately is also important, sometime a Ward need money right away, and sometime they just want spending money, in order to maximize recruitment, being in the Wards need to provide for those needs.

I kind of feel that adding the other heros is a bad idea, now she is not unique and the wave and all the other world's, lesser heroes and bullshit will make this go the same way the original did go in the end. A dbz power up clusterfack that ended in a kind of weird way.

Any reason you reduced the pay like that?

A couple reasons why I gave those numbers.

1. I didn't know what the canon pay was.
2. I know it had to be unattractively low because otherwise Grue's decision to be an enforcer and eventually Undersider wouldn't make any sense if it was something that a person could reasonably live off of comfortably.
3. Any contract before you sign it is up to negotiation. It's a way for the government to save some cash and see if an applicant is willing to haggle and if the money is the only thing that they care about, do they have to worry about them the first time they enter a safehouse and there's a year's salary on the table they could skim.
4.For the Protectorate ENE, over the last year they've gotten four new wards in the timeline I'm looking at, and with the state of the city expecting at least that much again will trigger and join them before the oldest have a chance to age out. With that timing it made sense for me to lowball the number.
5. As Taylor is a Minor, even a superpowered one, it seemed to me that there would be various groups that would push for a lower pay for Wards so that way it lessens the impression that these kids can ignore school and never have to worry about normal society because hey, they got powers and someone's going to be willing to pay them tons of cash. That whole, do you let a High School Student join the NBA right away kind of argument.
6. Finally, I always intended Danny to fight for his daughter and do something right by her, as a sign that he's trying to make up for his distance and grief before, and this seemed the most reasonable way for him to do so. Without putting him in mortal danger.

I kind of feel that adding the other heros is a bad idea, now she is not unique and the wave and all the other world's, lesser heroes and bullshit will make this go the same way the original did go in the end. A dbz power up clusterfack that ended in a kind of weird way.

Well if it becomes a divisive point and nobody likes them then they'll die heroically and Taylor can be the only hero surviving to fight the waves until the bitter end. Also I don't think you've yet figured out what I'm doing with the waves.

Well, there is "Fusion" for the first, and if the only crossover element is a power it's regularly called [crossover fiction] alt!power.

I thought by putting the (Worm/Rising of the Shield Hero) that it was clear enough that it was a crossover and not just Taylor getting an alt!power but I suppose I should put a note in the opening chapter since some people like to know what they're getting into.

2. I know it had to be unattractively low because otherwise Grue's decision to be an enforcer and eventually Undersider wouldn't make any sense if it was something that a person could reasonably live off of comfortably.
The reason Grue didn't sign up wasn't because the pay wasn't good, it was because he didn't think the PRT would help him with getting custody of Aisha, at least not before he reached 18, and because he expected it would claim too much of his time, meaning he wouldn't have the time to take care of Aisha.

So all in all, the reason Grue didn't join the Wards, wasn't because his research turned out to tell him he wouldn't make enough, it was because Grue didn't trust the government, and didn't think they would help him.

Grue isn't a perfectly logical person, and so made a bad choice, in not signing up for the Wards, because his upbringing caused him to not put much trust in government organisations, what with being a Black guy in a city dominated by Nazi's.

The fact that Grue didn't join the Wards, is often held up as an example of capes making bad decisions.
3. Any contract before you sign it is up to negotiation. It's a way for the government to save some cash and see if an applicant is willing to haggle and if the money is the only thing that they care about, do they have to worry about them the first time they enter a safehouse and there's a year's salary on the table they could skim.
Except that lower pay without negotiations get fewer people to sign up, and the Wards/Protectorate seriously need all the applicants it can get, if they had 50 applicants each year, they would still want more applicants, that's how valuable and rare capes who will work with them are.

And they will gladly take applicants who might skim, that's the very least of the risk they will take with applicants, they recruit former Villains into the Wards/Protectorate, because they are that pressed for capes.

Madcap broke Villains out of transports to the Birdcage, yet they not only let him become a Probationary Protectorate member, but even gave him the concession of pairing him up with Battery, because he set that as a requirement for his joining, compared to recruiting those kind of people, recruiting people who might commit petty theft isn't even a consideration.
4.For the Protectorate ENE, over the last year they've gotten four new wards in the timeline I'm looking at, and with the state of the city expecting at least that much again will trigger and join them before the oldest have a chance to age out. With that timing it made sense for me to lowball the number.
And if they had gotten 10 times that number in the last year, they would still want more, they are severely outnumbered everywhere, there's 3 or 4 Villains for every hero, the reason there's only about 12 heroes between the Wards and Protectorate, isn't because that's how many they need, it's because there's a major scarcity of heroes, and every single Protectorate section in existence is shorthanded when it comes to heroes.

So no they don't have enough recruits, they have far too few recruits, if a Protectorate section could get all the heroes they wanted, then they would increase their rooster about fivefold at minimum.
Except that these kids can equally go Villain, and if you aren't paying them generously, then that's more likely, and each Villain tend to cost the state millions a year, so it's a far better idea, to teach them that they can make a lot as heroes, than teaching them hero pay is crummy you're better off stealing stuff.

And that's aside from the fact that the Protectorate want career heroes, they don't want capes to decide not to be heroes, because they are shorthanded to a ridiculous degree, their demands that the Wards keep their grades up, is already them giving concessions to the ones who don't want that, if it wasn't bad PR, then it would suit the Protectorate great, if their Wards blew off school and got bad grades, because that would mean they were less likely, to choose not to become Protectorate heroes.

Considering paying Wards well isn't bad PR, they certainly aren't going to pay them poorly, in order to dissuade them from becoming career heroes, as the Protectorate very much want career heroes.
6. Finally, I always intended Danny to fight for his daughter and do something right by her, as a sign that he's trying to make up for his distance and grief before, and this seemed the most reasonable way for him to do so. Without putting him in mortal danger.
You could always have him fight, for not having Taylor placed under heavy restrictions for being an outed cape.

IIRC it was stated that he:
1. Didn't trusted them to do that.
2. It closed all other options if 1 happens.
3. Grue is a bit of anarchist and dislike strict rules and didn't believed he could do "day to day" and "follow all regs" properly - kinda like Stalker in that regard.

On first sight 3 makes it even more of a bad decision ("lol, I don wanna" kind)... until 2 taken in equation and you realize that Grue would've risked everything on job he is not sure that he can do without pissing off his superiors. And with 1 added to 2 it makes even less of a bad decision with information he had.

And even if he had full information on one hand they accommodated Stalker, on other it's stated that Piggot would've made Taylor to work with Stalker if she gone Ward as is. So how accomodating PRT would've been is reeeeally up in the air.

PS. Also Grue was minor when starting Villain career. And Ward's money go into the trust fund released on adulthood, not to person. So with public knowledge he would NOT been able to use that money and fight for custody. Yes it would've been easy for PRT to organize something... if they wanted to. And for Grue it was one big, big, BIG "IF".

They would have been fully accommodating about helping him get custody once he was an adult, and while his anti-authority attitude, might have landed him a lot of console duty and other minor punishments, there's no chance of him being fired, so the job might have become a drag for him, but it would have achieved his goals, and unless he downright began committing major crimes, he wouldn't have lost the job, just gotten a bunch of shit assignments, whenever he broke the rules.

The statement that Piggot would have made Taylor work with Stalker is untrue by the way, the actual statement is that Piggot wouldn't have sent Sophia to Juvie, but tried to handle it in house, by giving Sophia all console duty and no patrols, as well as other disciplinary measures, so Taylor wouldn't have been able to get rid of Sophia, but they would in all likelihood have accommodated a request, for Taylor never to be partnered up with Sophia, both in training and in the field, and would also arrange their schedules, so they were as little on duty at the same time as possible.

Which is because it's not simple to get rid of a Ward, there's both the PR hit of them disappearing from the rooster, the problems with the Youth Guard, and the fact that if you send them to prison, they are likely to turn to Villainy once they come out, so after Taylor told them her story, they would have given rehabilitating Sophia one last try, this time with the assumption, that she need constant supervision to not backslide into bad habits.

So Taylor wouldn't have gotten the catharsis of seeing Sophia punished, but they would probably have made sure she had to interact with her as little as possible, and would surely have made sure Sophia was watched at all times, and punished for so much as saying a harsh word.
PS. Also Grue was minor before starting Villain career. And Ward's money go into the trust fund released on adulthood, not to person. So with public knowledge he would NOT been able to use that money and fight for custody.
Yeah but he can't get custody before being an adult anyway, children can't get custody of other children.

Grue only sued for custody once he reached 18, until then he just helped Aisha as best he could, and the PRT could certainly do both of those better, they could help by getting Aisha into youth programs until he was 18, and help by making sure that him getting custody went really quick once he turned 18.

Well, there is "Fusion" for the first, and if the only crossover element is a power it's regularly called [crossover fiction] alt!power.

Perhaps I should be clearer. There really ought to be a way to differentiate between e.g. the thread titles "[Crossover] Taylor Varga (Worm/Luna Varga)" and e.g. "This I Protect (Worm/Rising of the Shield Hero)" (tagged crossover, among other things). They are both "worm/X" for some X. They both call themselves crossovers.

The first satisfies the aforementioned odd analogy to the Unicorn in the Garden principle (Unicorn in the Wormverse?), for the most part. The AU element is there right off the bat. (One minor exception to this still bugs me.)

There really ought to be a term to differentiate between UitWV-compliant and UitWV-incompliant works.

The Unicorn in the Garden principle, for reference:

If it's required by your plot, make one fantastic assumption in your story and only one - and do it in or before the first chapter (or first page or two, for shorter works). Do not add more as the story goes on. And once you have your one assumption, all further fantastic elements must derive from it, not any new assumptions. And just to be fair, it must be either obvious to the reader, or something that can be deduced from evidence present in your story.

At the end of chapter 2 I expect to hear complaints that this is only a crossover and not a fusion at all. No fake rape accusations, no Raphtalia, etc. I will soldier on though and see how much I have written on Monday for the final interlude before I start said Chapter 2.

It's certainly a fusion, it's just a Worm primary fusion, and the settings aren't compatible enough, to not have a setting be primary.

I think most people will be fine with it. One side of the fusion had to take over as the setting, and Taylor in Rising's world would to me be the less interesting option. You have clearly put some thought into working the Legendary Heroes and the Waves into Worm, and I'm intrigued enough to want to learn more.

Emma sipped from her soda as her two friends were arguing about the movie they had seen last night, it was nice to be hanging out with them, the last two summers it had seemed like when Emma wasn't doing her modeling work she was hanging out with Taylor. That last summer the times with Taylor hadn't been all that fun. Since Emma's run in with the ABB, her mom was thankfully allowing Emma the time to recuperate after what she had gone through. Now that Emma was getting outside the house her mom had thankfully dropped all of that 'do you want to go see a psychiatrist talk'. It had turned into 'when do you want to get back to work?' Emma was a little annoyed with her mom as it hadn't even been a month since it had happened, but deep down she knew that both her mom and her dad cared for her and were happy with what she was doing.

Her dad had even suggested not doing modeling anymore if it was too painful but Emma had flatly refused that suggestion. She was a fighter, like Sophia said, so there was no way that she was going to give up on her dream job and the thing that made her stand out from most every other kid at school. Emma was not about to give up on anything that made her popular with other kids her age, plus if she did give it up then people would want to know why. All sorts of rumors could get started and if they found out the truth then they would start to pity her; Emma hated the thought of that happening.

Emma decided to break up the argument on the best way that they would deal with an acid blooded wall climbing alien and said, "Did you finish your homework to get into Arcadia?"

Taylor shook her head, "Not quite yet but I should have it done by the end of the week. I just feel kind of sad that you won't be coming with me Emma."

"Getting into Arcadia would be amazing for me, Dad could easily afford it, but I'm not a straight A student like you. I care more about the important things in life, like having friends and going to parties. Mom's always said that when it comes to opportunity its more important who you know than what you know." Emma replied, which wasn't to say that she was dumb, her grades were solidly in the C+ to B+ range for most anything she was in. Some of the questions Taylor had shared about the entry exam earlier were completely over Emma's head and Sophia's too, so the two of them would be going to Winslow.

Sophia actually seemed excited by the idea, "I'm telling you that you should come to Winslow Taylor. There are members from every major gang in the city operating and recruiting at that school."

Taylor laughed, "I'm pretty sure that's one of the major reasons that my Dad is pushing so hard for me to get into Arcadia. At least with all the Wards that are supposed to be there I don't have to worry about being openly recruited by the E88 just because I have a power."

Sophia held out a finger and wagged it in her face, "Exactly, schools so well policed that you won't even know what you're getting yourself into until its too late. You'll think some Stacy or Victoria is the nicest person in the world and then bam, surprise white supremacist roping you in to trouble. Meanwhile Emma and I at Winslow will be able to pick them out and avoid them because they'll be wearing their gang colors openly, the circle of friends and cliques will keep us from being involved with them."

Taylor looked concerned, "What about you Emma? There will be ABB members won't there?"

Emma really didn't like that detail but Sophia just wrapped her arm around Emma and she felt her anxiety going back down, Sophia gave her an understanding look, "Doesn't matter if there is, Emma can handle them and if she can't well I got her back. ABB, E88, the Teeth, it doesn't matter who's there if they try to mess with Emma she's going to fuck them up for underestimating her. That'll just make it all the easier for me to decide who I need to target, gather all the information I need on the hustles they're pulling, and catch them in the act. Middle school was already bad enough for gossip, there's going to be all sorts of juicy details floating around I'll just bet."

Emma poked Sophia in the ribs, and the girl backed off and Emma found her enthusiasm infectious, Emma shot back, "I'm sure everyone will be lining up to tell a freshman anything. Anne was always complaining about how she was never invited places in the beginning year at High School."

"Hah, that's why I'll join the track team, blow them away with how fast I am." Sophia said.

Emma looked Sophia up and down and had to admit that Sophia definitely looked like she had the right build for it, Taylor asked, "Are you any good at that?"

Sophia slammed her hand down on the table, "Damn right I'm good. When you got a bunch of thugs chasing after you, you can't just duck behind a corner and pray that nothing happens, especially when there are capes involved. Sometimes you just have to get as far away as fast away as you can when you're in over your head."

Taylor frowned at Sophia's answer, "What about the times when you can't run? When you have to stay and fight?"

Sophia shrugged, "Maybe you got a chance miss immovable object but the normal people and even most people like us, well that's the suicide play and whatever you thought was so important to protect will probably end up dead or worse when the next spot of trouble in this crappy world happens. There's no saving someone this time and that's the end of it in my experience. None of us are that lucky with Endbringers and psychopaths like the Slaughterhouse Nine running around. Better to live and see that next fight where maybe you can do something and survive."

Emma asked, "You want to be popular too, not just when you're a cape?"

Sophia nodded, "Sure, civilian life is crappy and most people don't even know a quarter of the things I'm doing as a cape. I don't think its so bad to make my life a little better all around instead of just one area. Granted an obvious power means I just have to use my other skills. Be cool."

Emma said, "You are cool, the coolest." Emma could feel her cheeks burning, what was wrong with her, she usually wasn't this lame.

Sophia grinned, "That's right and don't either of you forget it. How about you Taylor you going to pick up a sport at Arcadia?"

Taylor thought for a moment before shaking her head, "I don't think it could work out for me, I'd have an unfair advantage in all the contact sports and I've never been very coordinated for the non-contact sports."

Sophia leaned back in her chair, "Going the nerd route huh, maybe it is a good thing you're going to go to a different school. Would be all sorts of damaging to our reps if you were part of the Chess Club or Matholympics and they knew we were hanging out."

Taylor rolled her eyes, "It would be such a shame if people didn't think of you as the stereotypical jock."

Sophia looked ready to punch Taylor in the shoulder but then on second thought put her hand back down, "It really is no fair with you."

"Speaking of stereotypical, I was thinking of doing the cheerleader thing." Emma said.

Taylor and Sophia both looked at Emma before starting to laugh to each other, Emma felt a little insulted over the matter, "What?"

Taylor answered, "You're already going to have your modeling work and your homework, I just don't think its a good idea to do something that's going to eat up even more of your time."

Emma grumbled, "My grades are good enough."

Sophia gave her own two cents, "You're going to do what learn how to tumble and do a flip or two and be a trophy every jock in Winslow, I repeat in Winslow, is going to be gunning for. The jocks aren't the gang members but I seriously doubt you'll need to go through the hassle to get people to want to hang out with you. You can just be you and all sorts of people are going to like you."

Emma was going to reply to that when out of the corner of her eye she saw a woman in her early twenties stand up and looking distressed with a man around her same age with a thick beard and unkempt haircut grab her arm to keep her from leaving and get her to sit back down. Emma pointed at the two to get Taylor and Sophia's attention about what was happening, they were the capes so they should know what to do. Sophia just shrugged, "Good eye Emma, but this is a crowded place, with mall security within shouting distance, if she wanted anyone to interfere she'd make some noise, fight, prove she's a survivor instead of a failure. No reason for us to stick our noses in where we're not wanted and we don't want to be."

"Why do you think he's treating her like that?" Emma asked.

Sophia got a far away look, "Could be anything really, maybe he's a scumbag, maybe he's the nicest person in the world, maybe she's a shrinking violet or a total bitch, we don't know anything about them. Their relationship. Their history. Not even their names. We'll probably never see them again after today. Brockton Bay is a big city. The only thing I can guess right here and looking at them right now is that he feels strong and powerful because he can hurt her and she's weak enough to let herself be hurt. Until she does something to change that its just the way the world is."

Emma looked at the two with new eyes, before she had been concerned for the woman but now she was more focused on Sophia and what she had just shared. She felt safe when she was with Taylor or Sophia but what would it be like to feel powerful herself?

Emma almost didn't realize until after the fact that Taylor had gotten up, left the table, and stormed over to the man and woman. Taylor had seemed so unsure at first but then after hearing what Sophia said Emma guess the shield bearing hero had found her resolve. Emma could hardly believe her eyes, after a year of taking care of Taylor and being her friend, Emma hadn't thought that Taylor had it in her. That was why after her near mutilation had happened she hadn't done anything to get in contact with Taylor, she didn't feel like she had the energy, the heart to be Taylor's friend anymore, to tell her that everything was alright when Emma didn't think anything would ever be alright with herself. Emma was going to cut all ties with her friend, and she'd never talk to her again. It was selfish, Emma knew, but it was what had to happen and then she learned that Taylor had experienced hell again and this time she'd come out of it as a cape.

The man let go of the woman's arm after whatever Taylor said to them but the woman didn't seem happy about Taylor's intervention at all and both of them were giving her mean looks. Sophia sighed, "I tried to warn her, come on, once she's had enough of getting yelled at we'll clear out of here before they get the mall cops to put us in a room until our parents can come pick us up or kick us out themselves. I hate domestic situations."

Emma found herself beginning to understand what was so different about Sophia and Taylor. They were both capes, and they were both heroes, or at least Taylor would be one soon but their whole approach to being heroes was different. Sophia was a hunter, a predator, and was slow to move against anything she hadn't singled out as her prey. The gangs, the crooks, the villains. Like Sophia had said, everyone else, the victims and the hostages, there would always be more of those and Sophia had to weigh her own potential good acts against her possible injury and demise. The things she said made sense to Emma but on the other hand, what Taylor was doing right now, Emma could agree that it was stupid but it was also heroic that she would stand up like that when she didn't know anything about the situation. If she was needed or if she was just a nuisance. Taylor was a defender, she couldn't see something bad happening and not throw herself in the way if she thought for a moment that there was a way she could help. Maybe that's why Taylor had the power that she had and could survive that kind of thinking.

As Emma and Sophia were gathering all their and Taylor's stuff, Emma wondered, predator or protector? Which one was she?
