You're stunned for a moment, both in the literal and figurative sense. That's Loki. He's the closest thing the world has ever seen first-hand to a literal deity and he's standing not ten feet from you. You blink a few times and exhale before fixing him with eyes you are sure are steely and cold. You're alive. He's alive, apparently. What about the others?
"Did everyone else get away? Are they safe?"
"I have no way of knowing," he says, shuddering. He's holding his arm as though in pain, and he's still sort of hunched-over. "Stacy and Poole should have been far enough away... my survival was inevitable; I may have lost much of my former power, but I'm still an Asgardian..." he trails off a bit, then shakes his head. "You're fine. They're made of tougher stuff and had you rooting for them. They should be no worse for wear than you, but I suspect actual confirmation would do both of our hearts a bit of good."
It takes a lot not to just dash off in search of them, but this situation needs to be addressed first; he's probably right. They're probably fine. You steady yourself with another breath and repeat it a few times, hoping they made it out of the situation in at least as good a shape as you did.
"Did... Fate... ever exist?"
Loki rolls his head to and fro. "In some reality... yes, probably. In others he still does, I imagine. The Avengers put me in a rather delicate place following my bid for power over this world... and I found myself taking desperate measures in order to remain extant. I... simply erased my name from the Book of Hel some time ago... and when I found myself at the gates of Niflheim I took another name and another face from another world and... came back." He shrugs. To him, it really must be that simple. At the same time, you're sure he's using it. Making himself seem more impressive by omitting his difficulties.
"But... why here!?"
He shrugs again. "I needed to lay low. It's easiest to hide right beneath the noses of those looking for you. More pressure, but... I like to think I thrive under pressure." He straightens his posture a bit and looks down at his hands, no longer cradling his arm as much. He raises those green eyes back to you with purpose. "Besides that, when you're so unequivocally proven wrong about something as I was... you want to explore it more. Or, at the very least I do. Perhaps there's something there about humanity that I overlooked. A school full of people on the fringes seemed a fine place to start my research."
It... perhaps seems like a silly question as he hasn't acted against you, but still... you have to ask. "Am I in danger? From you, I mean."
"No more than you ever have been," he jokes with a smile. It fades when you don't respond in kind. "No. I am not presently in the business of hurting people, if I can help it."
"... back there, with the... thing. What did you do?"
"A bit of magic. Something to shred apart that ghostly creature and hopefully still leave our friends intact. That much poorly-focused power is... very dynamic, though, so I figured the shockwave would be an issue. It took a lot out of me, I'm afraid, so hopefully it did the trick to dispel the beastie... as I said before, I don't have quite the same mastery over my old skills as I used to. My magic especially is... diminished." Your mind can't take waiting to find out the fate of your friends any long, and you simply nod at him and turn to leave. "Wait!" You pause, perhaps against your better judgement. "I... they can't know about me. You understand that, right? It's going to take me a moment to get my Felix face back on, but... if they know that Loki is here... inside your school... well... I won't be here for very long." He offers a pleading smile, which fades slowly into just pleading. "... please."
"You hurt people. A lot of people. You tried to use your powers to bend humanity to its knees! This was barely, what? Three years ago? You expect us to forgive--"
"I don't expect you to forgive. If I expected forgiveness, especially so soon, I wouldn't bloody be hiding."
"People died, Loki."
"So did I, in fairness. It was excruciatingly painful."
"They didn't get to come back."
At that he goes quiet, and much of his bravado shrinks away. "No. ... no, I suppose they didn't." His limbs relax at his sides and he hangs his head. "Fine... do what you will. I ask that you consider what I've gone through and what I've done to come to exactly this point, and this conversation. But... I cannot control you, and you will do what you think a hero must do."
