001 - Orientation I
Winner: Search the campus for a training room or something to actually try out combat before you go out there and look for a fight. Not everyone has defensive powers here.

Discretion is the better part of valor.

"I don't know about you, but I've never been in a real fight," that's ignoring the Sailor Moon Crystal argument again, and the three years you kicked ass in debate club, but those are different kinds of fights. "We have a gym here, right? Maybe there's some sparring equipment. Or… a training room."

Kid Omega smiles gently. "See, this is why I bring these questions to you; you always have such a keen insight into things." He pushes off the couch and heads back toward his room. "Let me know how that works out for you~!"

You sigh. Of course he's leaving you to figure this out on your own. It's not even likely you'll use a training room like that. You don't know the first thing about real combat, though, you suspect Quentin might not exactly be an expert, either. This is a bit more for Robbie, Elvin, and Roxy. Maybe even Kitty… though she manages to make handy use of her powers by ignoring doors and walls when she finds them inconvenient. She's thankfully never used this to any invasive degree, but it is a little startling when you open the fridge for some juice and there's Kitty's head on the other side, looking for snacks.

Finding the gym isn't difficult; you remember your tour of the campus pretty clearly. When you arrive there are even students and (you assume) faculty using the treadmills, lifting weights, and otherwise keeping themselves in peak condition. You honestly hadn't given much thought to starting a workout regimen like this; you were a little soft in places, but otherwise fairly fit without much effort. If this kind of exercise isn't a part of combat training you may want to consider doing your part to stay in shape, as well. If for nothing else, than to be fit enough to run when the situation demands it.

According to the woman working the desk, the facility does indeed have a power-safe training room and while it's in use now it will be free later tonight. You sign the squad up for an hour of use, thank her, and feel rather accomplished at finding a safe solution to your complex problem so quickly. Plus, now you have a few hours to kill! You could make good on your idea to start exercising yourself, explore the campus, see what other members of your squad are up to, or… well, anything, really, so long as you're back here in time to use the training room.

OOC: Each of these decisions will eat up a certain amount of time depending on what happens when you pursue them. You could definitely pursue multiple options before it's time to use the training room, but you certainly won't be able to use them all regardless of the choices you make.

Might as well get started in the Iron Church while we're here, superheroics are a very athletic affair, usually. Still, we could also use any spare time to get closer to one of our teammates (no sense trying to get more than one now, I think).

Hmm, could Vilina attempt to use her Luck powers to help Robbie figure out the deal with his "bubbles"?

humm I think, power testing or venting will be a bit physically exerting so I don't want to go to the gym yet, let's do explore the campus first though, you'll never now what you can find (a good hangout spot, etc)

Guess it mainly depends on if Vilina has straight up probability manipulation. Basically though, Luck stats are almost always about things working in your favor, so... probably Vilina just needs to poke and prod until a lucky breakthrough or guess?

The trick with probability manipulation is usually high base specs. Less manipulation needed to make shit happen and it shifts the probable outcomes you're shuffling through

Good point. APT is our biggest stat, and it's about learning. Maybe some time spent studying the phenomenon will help? Or some time spent studying his powers in general? Using our big brain to our advantage seems like a good way to set the table for our powers to be of maximum utility.

OK! Time to get fit! Time to get swole! Get a juicy rip! No agony, no brag-ony!

Or… maybe let's just start with a light jog. You mosey over to an empty machine, look at the console for a moment and ascertain how everything works, set yourself for a low speed (but not too low) and start running. At first, everything is great! You can feel your muscles working, you get what is probably a smaller version of the runner's high you've heard so much about. With your body so active, your mind is looking for distractions. There are TVs on the opposite wall, but it's nothing interesting. You'd listen to music on your phone, but you left your headphones back at the dorm. So instead, you just think… think about classes and how you'll balance the course load and learning to be a real super-hero. Think about your squad and their emotional state after only one week of cohabitation… you're not entirely sure why but Kitty seems just as stressed out as the guy who calls himself Rage. You're a little worried about her… perhaps you should try and catch up with her when you're done jogging? Maybe if you can talk to her one-on-one it might give you some insight into what's troubling her so much. She seemed so chipper and carefree on the first day you met, but ever since…

Suddenly you become acutely aware of your physical condition. It's only been about twenty minutes, but you're tired. Way more tired than you think you should be. Your jacket is starting to stick to you in places from the sweat, and the edges of your vision are… a little blurry? That… that can't be right. It's not like you're overweight or anything. A little cuddly in places, sure, but you still look good in a bikini! Yet here you are, sweating your ass off and starting to lose pace. Suddenly someone is beside you. It's the girl who was jogging on the machine next to you, the blonde with the earbuds. Those earbuds are out now, faint punk rock still blaring from their tiny speakers, and there's concern in her blue eyes.

"Hey, you OK? You look really flushed."

You nod and try to answer, but your breath is betraying you. She takes a look at the timer on your machine and drops your speed down.

"Just slow your roll a little. You need to cool down. Are you gonna freak out if I touch you?" You shake your head again, and she puts the back of her hand to your forehead. "Ah, hell, you're overheating like crazy. Just try to relax. Deep breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth. I'll be right back."

Now that she mentions it, you are awfully hot. You strip off the light hooded jacket you were wearing and hang it on the handrail. With the cool air conditioning hitting your sweaty skin directly, you're starting to feel a lot cooler. Your heart stops beating so fast, and eventually the machine beeps softly and slows to a stop. You gather your jacket and trudge over to a nearby bench, flopping into a pile. You feel less panicky, but your body just doesn't seem to know what to do with itself. You start to feel a little self-conscious; nobody else in here seems to be having problems jogging. Why you? Eventually, the blonde girl returns with a bottle of sports drink and a damp washcloth.

"Sorry, there was a line. Here, drink this and put this on the back of your neck."

You do as she instructs, and slowly your body returns to a wobbly semblance of normalcy. Although your calves still kind of hate you. She sits beside you the whole time, watching intently and smiling gently when you look directly at her, but not pushing or trying to talk. Eventually you feel well enough to speak.

"Thank you," you begin, "I don't know what happened. I know it's been a few years since I had gym, but I didn't expect to be so… out-of-shape."

She shakes her head. "No, don't be so hard on yourself. You just overdid it, I think. You don't usually jog, do you?" You respond with a head-shake of your own. "You really wanna warm up a bit before hitting the highest speed you're comfortable at. And probably stretch first, just in case. You don't wanna pull anything."

"I… didn't realize jogging was so complicated."

"It isn't, usually. But if you haven't been doing it for a while and you push yourself… your body kinda freaks out and thinks something is wrong. Maybe start without the jacket next time, too. Just to keep your temperature down so you don't overheat again. And hydrate." She points to a sign in the gym that literally reads 'hydrate or die' in giant aqua block letters.

"Thank you, sorry."

"Really, don't worry about it. I'm glad you're OK. You are feeling better, right?"

"Yes, I am. Thank you. I'm Vilina, by the way."

"Gwen." She smiles more broadly, with teeth. You respond in kind.

"Gwen. What do I owe you for the drink?"

"Don't worry about it," she waves you off. "It's, like, girl-code, right? We gotta help each other out."

That makes you smile again. "Well, I appreciate it. I should get going, though, I wanted to meet a friend of mine."

"Sure! Take it easy. And, uh, if you ever need a jogging buddy, hit me up! I'm in 2-H."

"I'll keep that in mind!"

You feel odd when you get up, somewhere between rubbery and… stronger, somehow. But you have no problem walking and your calves aren't even protesting like they did toward the end of your jog. With an exhale of confidence and relief, you make your way out of the gym and into the halls. It's time to find Kitty and see what you can do to help her out. You check the cafeteria first, but don't see anyone you recognize. You try the library next, but unless she's hiding particularly well in there, she's nowhere to be found. You decide to see if she went back to the dorm, and take one of the outside paths to get some fresh air when you finally spot her laying on the grass under a tree.

"Hey, Kitty!" She props herself up on her elbows at the sound of her name, beaming as she sees you. You hustle over to her and plop down next to her in the grass.

"Hey, Vilina. What's up? Enjoying a little night-time stroll?"

"I was actually looking for you. You're kind of a hard person to find!"

"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Kind of goes hand-in-hand with my power sometimes. Other people have to go around obstacles to get to a destination, I can just go… through. So it's pretty easy to get places for me, and also easy for other people to lose track of me. My mom used to hate taking me to the mall," she muses.

"That's part of what I wanted to talk to you about. Quentin and I thought it might be a good idea for the squad to do a little practice in the training room tonight. I have us some time booked in around an hour and a half. I think it might be good to… de-stress, y'know?"

She nods. "Yeah, Elvin and Robbie especially seem… out-of-sorts. I bet they're both used to more active lifestyles."

"I… could honestly say the same for you. You've seemed… not yourself since the first day we met. Is everything OK?"

"Huh?" Shadowcat looks a little surprised at you, but the fire of any defensive emotional response to that she might have deflates pretty quickly from her eyes. "Uh… yeah, I guess. Y'know? I'm just sorta… overwhelmed, I suppose. New school, new people… I've literally never been away from my mom this long. We're real big on family, and… not seeing mom and dad for almost a whole week now… I mean, we text and video chat and stuff, but it's not the same, y'know?"

You do know. You've been away from your parents before, due to summer camp, or school trips, or one or both of them having to take a business trip out of town… but there's something much more different knowing you're going to be living without them every day now. There's the freedom of adulthood coupled with mourning the demise of your childhood… and with the shadows of uncertainty piled on top of that…

"I mean, I also haven't picked my major… I don't know what I wanna do with myself, y'know? And I know I don't have to. I have some time to decide. But I don't wanna be one of those people who takes forever and then never becomes anything!"

"Well… Kitty, we have sort of an advantage over most people in that way. We were gifted with abilities that we can use to help people, and so long as we stay on the right side of the law we can even get paid for doing it. You can… you can just be here to be a super-hero, y'know? That can be your decision. It can be any of our decisions. I really want to go to med school, but I might also decide helping people in the field is more important. And doing that with all the knowledge I gained in school with the help from Mr. Stark through the Initiative is so much better than just… trying to do it on my own, without any training."

Kitty takes a moment to process what you're saying and organize through a few thoughts, but she finally nods her head and a calm smirk blossoms on her lips.

"Yeah, huh. I guess you're right. I didn't think about it like that."

"Sometimes it's hard for me to think about like that. I wish I could do both… and maybe I can, but it sure as hell won't be easy…"

"Yeah." She nods again, and suddenly she's hugging you. "Thanks, V. I think I'm gonna go take a little nap before we meet up for training, OK?"

"Sure! I hope I helped?"

She stands up and smiles at you. "Yeah, you did. I feel a little better already! Thanks. I mean, really."

"No problem. It's... like, girl-code, right? We help each other out."

"Yeah!"

Kitty picks up her stuff from the grass, gives you a wave, and walks straight through the wall of the building toward the dorms. You smile after her, feeling good that you were able to give her some perspective. And in some small way, you think you calmed yourself down a bit, as well. You still have about an hour to kill before practice. But what to do with it?

I say we go with this unless any of our squad mates need any particular attention. I'd like to see what we've got to play with on campus and we could meet more people.

Best let him know before he goes to find something

Doh I forgot the purpose of going out in the first place.
Yeah, we should tell Quentin guys.
