The Wild Edge (Fantasy Border Outpost)

Heh I figured you'd be all over analyzing this bit.
It's what i'm here for.
I thought it was fairly well done.
It's all good, my mom's just into the little eccentricities and history of english.
Not sure that style is actually possible for someone that doesn't have Ruby's weird momentum control ability (because it's not just speed). Though it is an interesting idea I guess.
True, the key element of the fighting style is the manipulation of recoil.
I'm surprised you didn't comment on this bit:
A woman doesn't want to be told "you need to get fatter", that's not exactly noteworthy.;)

[X] Plan Future Proofing

[X][Name] Silva Talis

For the name, I just thought about doing something that means something... So from there came this. "Such a important plant" is the meaning :p Unfortunately, no latin word I found for either nature or tree worked well as a name...

[X] Plan Future Proofing
[X][Name] Thalia

Finally caught up. Well, I'm suprised this Quest is still going, with those Dice.
Short Question for @inverted_helix.
Would we need a Action to use the Bear Den as a Trap for Orcs?
Maybe change the Patrol Routes so that Orcs are more likely to be attacked?

Other Things...
Maybe give Olivia a Bow or Slingshot? The Strenght to Weight thing shouldn't be a Problem for longe Range Weapons. For close Range, maybe something like a Meteor Hammer?
She is more resistant against blunt Weapons and not limited by Weight.

Then there are the Mole Rats. I'm not sure what to do about them.
Maybe smoke them out? We would need to enchant something to get the Smoke where we want it but it should kill them, maybe get us even some Meat.

Then we could try growing something in the Forest. I'm curious if we get the growing Effect if we plant something into Pots and put those Pots into a Treehouse.
Should be easier to grow anything that way without having Trees or other Seeds in there.

Then we could look into how the Ocean is affected by the Overgrowth. With how the Growth Effect works in a Circle centered on the deepest Part of the Forest, I'm curious how it works with the part of the Ocean inside of that Circle. Maybe we should start fishing?

Season 13: Spring
[X] Plan Future Proofing
-[X][Construction] Expand a palisade to cover a larger area. You'll go a different direction than last time Needed to safely fit more buildings within the wall. (50 Denier in needed materials) 29+10-20-5

While your workers don't suffer any additional losses this season, they simply couldn't finish the job they set out to do. Part of the new palisade has been built, but it's not even halfway complete. Their lack of manpower was crippling, though their slow probing of the ground ahead of them also contributed. Many soft bits of ground that were simply muddy as usual for spring here were stabbed repeatedly with spears before anyone moved forward. The continual testing of the sentry line by wildlife and later by orcs did not do their nerves any good either.

-[X][Personal] Try to convince your father to increase your funding. That seems like squeezing blood from a stone, an angry stone, but might be worth trying. 56
--[X] Instead see about getting a steady stream of new recruits instead

You draft a letter explaining your current tenuous position and the steady losses which you have taken to unavoidable causes given your position. While you have managed to stabilize the choke point for now, you're supremely vulnerable to any surges in the various threats facing you. It would be in his best interest to invest a bit more now so as to save more money later.

His initial response is a well veiled insult about your competency. He goes so far as to suggest that perhaps a more skilled commander could have done the job with less resources. It very carefully isn't a no though.

You reply in another letter explaining you were not trained for this role in the least and have had to learn on the job. You are not a more skilled commander, and perhaps letting you stay in the city and hiring someone else would have been a better choice, but that wasn't the choice that was made. You're the one that was given the job, and you need additional men to do it.

Trading barbs is old hat in your family. You've never been quite sure whether it's a game with him or not; he's always had way too good of control over what he shows for you to know for sure.

He must not have been too unwilling though as a batch of replacements turned up at the end of the season with word that you're going to get 40 denari worth each season of replacements.

(Hunter unit 1 restored to full strength, Levy +10%, +40 Denari in replacements per season passively.)

-[X][Dryad] Spend a Personal Slot teaching her yourself, potentially developing better trust. 74
--[X] Ask her to gather information about which animals can be trained and how to do it from other dryads. 75

"Hmm what do you think of Thalia or Nerissa for your name?"

"Nerissa! It's definitely prettier," the now named dryad chirps happily.

"So Nerissa," you say with a smile, "do you think you could ask the other dryads about how they train animals?"

"Sure," she says while tracing more letters.

The next time you go to teach her she eagerly greets you at the entrance to her grove. "Quick come look at what I made," she says while dragging you by the hand.

Draped over her tree is a sign made of a single piece of shaped wood with "Nerisza" spelled out in upraised block letters. With how excited she is you don't really have the heart to tell her that she spelled it wrong. "It's very nice," you say patting her on the head, avoiding the leaves.

"I made one for you too." One of the trees brings a branch down towards you and delivers a simpler flat plaque of smooth wood with your own name embossed on it. Your name is spelled correctly, but it is a bit simpler phonetically.

"Thank you," you say taking it from the reaching tree limb. "I'll hang it where people can see it on my house."

She beams happily at that.

"So did you ask the other dryads about animal raising?" you say segueing to your own questions.

"Muuu, they didn't want to tell me about it," she whines. "Some of them are worried about me passing it on to you, and others say that just getting the answers told to you doesn't teach you anything. Though one at least told me I should try influencing animals with fruit."

Well you didn't really figure it would be that simple anyway.

-[X][Hunters 1] Scout, learn more about the forest, reduce chance of enemies slipping by. 88+5+3-10-10 = 76
-[X][Hunters 2] Scout, learn more about the forest, reduce chance of enemies slipping by. 43+5+3-10 = 41
-[X][Footmen] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by. 84-10

Your scouts and patrols spent much of the season tangling with orcs while fending off birds and snakes trying to nest in their treehouses. Your hunters suffer a few casualties from the snakes for the most part, as the orcs seemed more interested in being an annoyance than actual threat.

Late in the season your base sentries detected orcs sneaking upon your base. They chose to flee when a patrol of footmen fast marched towards them rather than fight though. It seems likely that the orcs being visible to your watchtowers were merely acting as a distraction so another group could move towards your base undetected. Leo explained they didn't have the numbers to launch a direct assault on even a lightly fortified and defended location like your outpost, so they likely had hoped to sneak over the walls at night undetected to wreak havoc from within. Once they were detected there was no point in fighting.

(10% hunter 2 casualties, orcs repulsed with their bonus from previous turn scouting diminished)

-[X][Captain] Train Olivia 92

Leo comes back with Olivia as he often does after a season of training to report on her progress. She's practically lighting the room with her beaming smile though.

"Well I'm willing to say that her initial training is complete. She's not what I'd call a warrior in terms of skill, but I've managed to overcome her initial blocks on hitting things and make sure she won't trip over herself," Leo announces in a voice as if he had achieved some feat worthy of legend. It annoys you a little.

"I'm sure she was a much better pupil than that, she's always been more than eager," you retort.

Leo gives you a look that shouldn't be given to a person's boss, but you don't mind too much since he really does know military matters better than you. Olivia is working on hiding herself under the table.

You cross stares with each other for a moment before he continues as if you'd said nothing. "Just her supernatural abilities will let her trounce several average soldiers, but to really leverage it we'll need some sort of gear and training for it. I see a few main routes that could work without some silly amount of magic thrown at it. One, we load her down with the heaviest armor we can find and a big greatsword, both would have to be custom made just for her. Two, we have a ballista maker produce something she could use as a bow. Three, we just go with the fist approach and get her some gauntlets. Four, we just get her a really sturdy shield and have her smash through anything in her way. " He emphasizes the last two with a smashing fist motion.

"What do you think Olivia?" you ask her, since she's the one going to be using it.

"Maybe the bow? Then I wouldn't have to get messy? But that might not be very useful in the forest," she muses. "With the shield I could just smash through without seeing them. Master wouldn't have to pay much for the gauntlets, but then I'd get all messy. Heavy armor would be really expensive... and so unladylike," she finishes the last at a much lower volume.

The corners of your mouth twitch up just a little. Leo doesn't restrain his laughing as usual though. Olivia sinks almost completely under the table.

Trying to distract him you ask: "So what are the pros and cons in your view Leo?"

He takes a moment to draw down his chuckling before responding. "The bow would give her fantastic range and power at that range, but I expect her accuracy would be awful so only effective against very large enemies or when they're really close. With the kind of thing we're talking about it would still be useful as a club though. Probably something like 200 denier maybe to have it made?" He shrugs. "It's a real specialty item."

"The armor and greatsword would give her unparalleled protection. I'm not even sure the bear in the forest would be able to hurt her with as much armor as I'm thinking of giving her. She'd likely have poor endurance due to the heat though, and it would be real expensive." Leo pauses to think, hand rubbing his chin. "Probably 400 Denier for that level of blacksmithing, though it's a bit easier than normal armor since they don't have to work as small, it's still a lot of steel."

"The shield and the gauntlets are cheaper options, probably 50 Denier for either of them. The shield makes her basically a battering ram, so good against large and slow single targets, and good defensively. The gauntlets better at dealing with groups but also more vulnerable. It's really up to you where we go with this next," he concludes, safely offloading the decision to you.

-[X][Levy] Guard 84-10+15-10 = 79
--[X] The base and sawmill
Sawmill 16-10+10-10=6

Sawmill operation was heavily disrupted this season not by fauna, but rather by flora. Many of the workers came down with terrible burns despite a lack of heat. It was a very strange case and compounded by your lack of a doctor. Many who might have survived died of the sickness that follows wounds.

You quarantined them immediately as you didn't know the cause. When it was only presented amongst the lumberjacks and sawmill workers though you figured it must be something in the wood they had recently cut.

You decided to simply have them cut from a different area. There were no further victims at that point. You've marked off the area they were cutting from before. You're no herbalist to know what the name of the trees is.

(-50 lost productivity, -25 replacing workers)

Plans for Summer: (Base costs shown, increase 5% for merchants issue)

[][Construction] Improve the wall with guard towers offering some protection from ranged weapons and a higher vantage point. (50 Denier)
[][Construction] Expand a palisade to cover a larger area. You'll go a different direction than last time Needed to safely fit more buildings within the wall.
[][Construction] Expand the barracks to deal with a doubled number of men, taking into account the need for it to be off the ground from the start this time. (150 Denier)
-[] Inside the wall (forces cooking and toilets outside the wall)
-[] Outside the wall (in danger from wildlife)
-[] Build in the Dryad's territory
[][Construction] Build a woodworking workshop to produce something better than raw timber. Will require hiring workers separately. (100 Denier)
-[] Inside the wall (forces cooking and toilets outside the wall)
-[] Outside the wall (in danger from wildlife)
-[] Build in the Dryad's territory
[][Construction] Build a rabbit pen? (25 Denier)
[][Construction] Write-in

Thanks to Olivia handling many of the mundane tasks of life for you now that she has her gloves, you have more time free for other things. You could squeeze in two actions now, but they would be on d85 rather than d100. You can also assign her to assist in any other task, though some jobs she'll obviously be of more use in.
[][Personal] You could produce some basic enchanted gear for one of your units. Sharper blades and harder armor are staples for a reason. (100 Denier in needed materials)
-[] Specify a unit.
[][Personal] Have Leo give you a bit of training. However much you hate it, being better at fighting will help a lot if something is trying to eat you. (Must be taken with appropriate Captain action)
[][Personal] Try to convince your father to increase your funding. That seems like squeezing blood from a stone, an angry stone, but might be worth trying.
-[] Instead see about getting a steady stream of new recruits instead
[][Personal] Recruit new units. Specify what kind.
-[] Replace losses, 130 denier
-[] What units?
[][Personal] Recruit some more woodworkers to specialized in more complex bits rather than bulk construction to produce trade goods for sale. (100 Denier ongoing cost, boost to sales value of 200 Denier. Requires woodworking workshop.)
[][Personal] Recruit a healer. Healers are expensive, and many claim the title with no real knowledge at all. To find an effective one you'll have to go do a bunch of interviews. Even if you find a good one they'll likely command a high price and need a lot of equipment and herbs. You likely can't yet afford this, but it's on your mind. (If successful: 400 Denier startup, 200 Denier ongoing, greatly reduces casualties, improves morale; no cost for non-critical failures)
[][Personal] Recruit a potioneer. Finding one willing to move out beyond the boundaries of civilization will be quite the task. They'd offer a fairly wide array of options though, and likely could do something with products from the forest. They could serve some of the duties of a healer, if less effectively. (If successful: 400 Denier startup, 200 Denier ongoing, greatly reduces casualties, improves morale; no cost for non-critical failures)
[][Personal] Experiment on the effects of enchanting within the Overgrowth.
[][Personal] Write-in

In return for teaching her reading and later getting books for her, Nerissa is willing to offer your men a bastion of safety in the forest, and if you'd like to build something in her area she can protect it from the effects of the Overgrowth.
[][Nerissa] Spend 50 Denier on buying her a bunch of children's books. She's reached the level where she could learn more on her own a bit.
-[] Write-in something you'd like to ask her or try to get her to do for you.
[][Nerissa] Spend a Personal Slot teaching her yourself, potentially developing better trust.
-[] Write-in something you'd like to ask her or try to get her to do for you.
[][Nerissa] Leave her alone this season.

Olivia can now be deployed to fight something. She could still benefit from additional training, but it would require specializing in a weapon.
[][Olivia] No weapon for now
[][Olivia] Gauntlets, good versus multiple units, low defense, cheap (50 Denier)
[][Olivia] Shield, good versus single target, high defense, cheap (50 Denier)
[][Olivia] Ballista, good versus single target at range or multiple at melee, short range with small chance for getting better, low defense (200 Denier)
[][Olivia] Heavy armor and Greatsword, incredible defense, good versus multiple units or single target, low endurance, expensive (400 Denier)

(Keep in mind you have 2 units of hunters, unit 1 is weakened)
[][Hunters] Hunt for food, reduce upkeep by 50
[][Hunters] Scout, learn more about the forest, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
[][Hunters] Catch a bunch of rabbits for the rabbit pen. (Requires rabbit pen.)

[][Levy] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
[][Levy] Train with the captain (must be taken with captain action, is not advised at this time)
[][Levy] Guard
-[] The base and sawmill
-[] The construction crew
-[] The merchants that bring your supplies (eliminate 5% modifier)

[][Footmen] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
[][Footmen] Train with the captain (must be taken with captain action, is not advised at this time)
[][Footmen] Guard
-[] The base and sawmill
-[] The construction crew
-[] The merchants that bring your supplies (eliminate 5% modifier)

[][Captain] Command troops, raising morale and effectiveness
[][Captain] Train Olivia
[][Captain] Recruit new units. Specify what kind.
-[] Replace losses, 130 denier
-[] What units?
[][Captain] Train regulars (must be taken with appropriate action)
[][Captain] Train you (must be taken with appropriate action)

355 starting -609 upkeep this turn -53 construction +600 season payment +150 sawmill profit -25 replacing sawmill workers = 418 Denier
Upkeep next turn: 590+5% (100 you +100 leo +100 sawmill + 50 construction crew +95 hunters + 45 levies +100 footmen) - 200 Sawmill profit

AN: Quite unsure of this one. Really struggled to write it. Feel free to ask questions about things that ended up unclear. This might see some edits depending. I still wanted to get it out today more than I wanted to fiddle with it more though.

Don't we get 50 Denier in replacement units each season? Does that apply to loggers or just military units?

@veekie Give our maid our shield, otherwise you'll have to deal with it when an orc shoots her and she dies from the wound later in agonizing pain because we've got no doctor.

Sorry for the fearmongering, but I just don't see why we should get gauntlets when both Olivia and Leo would prefer the shield.

Hmmm... @inverted_helix What would it cost to hire a herbalist?

And not necessarily one that's a healer at that, but more someone interested in identifying and studying plants. Because honestly, I think that one of our big money makers with the Overgrowth might be as simple as producing potions. If we can identify useful herbs, poisons, etc, etc, in the forest and harvest them. Because they'd most likely keep their magic long enough to get back to wherever we build up the potion brewery. Hell, if we can build a potion brewery and get the plants to produce useful potions, then that's the sort of building I can see being easily set up near the Nerissa. Especially if we can set up farms for the needed plants there as well.

Well the advice is not quite as simple as a basic rewards system. Though that's the obvious interpretation.

GOT standard nobility BS, but at least he delivers.
GOT is more accurate to nobility than Disney. Though this has shades of both.

Well, that raid would have been nasty. Good thing we caught it.
Yeah they distract you with one visible unit then try to punch a stealthy one through. Stacking 4 units on it though was pretty overwhelming.

... I think I know why Leo's giving you a look.

:D

"I'm the Yang, let's fight!"
Sadly, no ranged attacks.

I'll admit the shield idea is the one I came up with first and found most amusing. I put some thought into the ways you could leverage super strength but not super-inertia though and these are the ones I think can all work.

I don't know what you're talking about. All the cool, badass ladies I know tromp around in plate armor.
Hah this would not be the figure hugging plate armor you see on fantasy women so often, but instead the absurdly bulky male fantasy armor where you can't be sure their gender underneath but assume male.

So two hundred, and then training for accuracy...
Yeah it's a longer term investment with a much higher skill cap than the other options.

We need to figure out something to cool the armor down. Something magic.
yeah a cooling charm on the armor might make it abit more pratical?
This sort of thing could make the heavy armor more practical. It will also make the cost end up even higher though.

I don't know why the shield or the gauntlets are mutually exclusive.
Honestly it somehow didn't even cross my mind. Sure you can do both.

Don't we get 50 Denier in replacement units each season? Does that apply to loggers or just military units?
40 and just military units, but I'm having loggers replenish just at money cost without an action cost. You're still eating a heavy penalty on construction actions (-20) from not replenishing the construction crew though.

Hmmm... @inverted_helix What would it cost to hire a herbalist?

And not necessarily one that's a healer at that, but more someone interested in identifying and studying plants. Hmm with this sort of setting a potion brewer is very close to a healer. A general potion brewer beyond medicinal stuff might even command a higher price. Probably some sort of potioneer at same price as healer with a broader ability and less depth than a healer. An herbalist that can identify useful plants and harvest them but not brew potions at half price, 200 purchase 100 upkeep.

-[X][Olivia] Heavy armor and Greatsword, incredible defense, good versus multiple units or single target, low endurance, expensive (400 Denier)

At last that palisade should get finished.

As ridiculous expensive as that armor is going it seens like the best option in the overgrowth specialy considering we can negate the overheating dowside.

Finaly we just repeled the orc scheme and the QM pointed out how four units was pretty much overkill so I think we can easily afford keeping the captain training Olivia and using a hunter unit to actualy hunt this turn to help with costs.

-[X][Nerissa] Spend a Personal Slot teaching her yourself, potentially developing better trust.
--[X] Ask Nerissa about her, try to know her and her species better, especially so we don't misstep for ignorance.
--[X][Olivia] Gauntlets and Shield (100 Denier)
-[X][Hunters1] Scout, learn more about the forest, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
-[X][Hunters2] Scout, learn more about the forest, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
-[X][Levy] Guard
--[X] The base and sawmill
-[X][Footmen] Patrol, reduce chance of enemies slipping by.
-[X][Captain] Train Olivia

So, my plan is... A mix match of the two already proposed ones, with one difference: Battle Hammer and Shield. A battle hammer is basically a heavy one handed weapon, that rellies more on strength than finesse, thus it should work very well for her, especially since she can't keep running forever and can't outrun everything with her shield charge, so when she isn't running she can keep hitting. Is it possible, @inverted_helix ? And what about it's pricing?
