The Weird Wild West (A Western Fantasy Quest)

[X] [Weapon] My dad's runearm, still relatively new and shiny. (You will choose the specific type of weapon in the next update)
[X] [Trinket] Your great grandpa's old smoking pipe, the last gift your mom got from her tribe. (You will focus in summoning animal spirits)

More curious about runearms rather then magic bows, tempting though that latter one is.

3.- Family Relics
You look down towards your dad's runearm. it was a:

[] [Weapon] Revolver: Medium and close range. The focus of a rune revolver is its versatility, with 6 bullets that can have different runes each you can create all kind of surprises to your enemies. Gives a bonus to hand to hand combat and dexterity

[] [Weapon] Hunting Rifle: Medium and long range. This is the weapon you use when you want to make sure that someone goes down. With 20 bullets in its chamber, you can load and shoot to your heart content, the rifle uses cartridges though, so there's not much variety on the kind of rune bullets you can shoot once you put one. Gives a bonus to perception and tracking.

[] [Weapon] Double-Barreled Shotgun: Medium and Close range. This weapon's objective is to destroy everything it has in front. It can only have two shells but those two have an incredible stopping power, especially if shoot at the same time, it can be tricky to pull through and can hurt the shooter. An advantage of having only two shells is that you can have a variety of different runes to use, then again most shotgun rune shells only focus on destructive power. Gives a bonus to intimidation and endurance.

"This?" You ask pointing at the gun, "it was a… gift from my dad, I have some experience but I don't use it much," you finish sheepishly.

Fortunately, your life hasn't been dangerous enough for you to be an expert shooter, though, that may be a disadvantage now that you must stand on your own.

"Oh, Really? That's some gift then, runearms are quite expensive," Lisa says in a slightly impressed tone, "though I heard the bullets are more cheaper."

"Yeah, it's mainly because the guns need a mana crystal to work, that's what activates the runes on the bullets," you say while calming patting your gun.

"And that?" She points at my pipe, lazily hanging from my neck like a weird necklace, curiously.

"This," you bring it up, "it's a family relic, it helps me to communicate with the animal spirit of my mom's old tribe."

Pick the animal spirit:

[] [Spirit] Bear: strong, confident and full of energy, they're straight forward and sometimes quite blunt but you can count on them to go right at your problems.

[] [Spirit] Coyote: they're both very wise and very mischievous, love to trick people into learning lessons but will have your best interest in mind.

[] [Spirit] Eagle: powerful and free, they don't like being ordered around to complete your task for you, but they don't have a problem with assisting in a more passive manner.

[] [Spirit] Wasp: energetic, social and great with teamwork, they're great in multi-tasking but be careful when they lost their temper.

"It let me ask the spirits for their help."

"Really?" This time the wonder is quite palpable in the young girl's voice, "I have heard of the magic of the drows but I have never seen it with my own two eyes," she says the last part looking directly at you, with hope in her face.

You sadly destroy that hope, "sorry but I can't show you, right now I'm not in the best of terms with them and asking them to appear just for a quick show will probably not help," you finish while looking down.

Being rejected by one's tribe doesn't create a lot of favor from the spirits.

"Oh... ok," she responds with quite the sad look in her face, she tries to not show it but is kind of obvious.

You open your mouth to try to talk about something else- and immediately shut it when someone else comes from the room behind Lisa, probably the kitchen by the delicious smell that's coming out of it.

The person that comes out is an elf, or maybe a small giant? Because he's quite huge! He has to double over a little to pass the door! He seems to have muscle over his muscles and lots of scars on his arms and face, and… it's that in eye-patch!? And an apron!?

...Wait, something it's not like the rest.

"Dad! You finish breakfast?" Lisa suddenly yells while turning at his direction, her sadness forgotten.

"Humf," it's all the giant says.

"Oh good! It smells great!" Lisa continues, the image of this energetic young woman talking to the quiet muscle giant is quite bizarre for you.

"D-dad?" You ask not sure if you heard right.

"Right! Dad this is Agis, he's new in town, Agis this is Richard Summers! Also known as my dad!" Lisa presents you as if is the most natural thing in the world.

"He-ey! Nice to meet you, sir," You wave at him trying to not focus on how he could easily crush his bare hands.

"..."

He just stares at you, silently.

"..."

The silence continues for a few seconds more, you begin to sweat, not really sure what to do in this circumstance.

When suddenly, his giant hand raises up, and you barely manage to resist a flinch, and he waves back.

"Hi."

That's one deep voice.

"I think he likes you," Lisa mock whispers at you, "well, now that breakfast is ready, want to stay and eat with us?"

"Huh?" You react in surprise, "oh no, I couldn't-"

"It's not a problem really! It would be our treat, a 'welcome to town' gift!" She interrupts you before you can continue.

In one hand, it would be nice to have some free food, and it really smells delicious, on the other hand, you could be exploring the rest of the town.

"..."

And it has nothing to do with the giant father still staring at you, honest.

[] [Inn] Stay and eat the food like a drow!
[] [Inn] Runaway and explore the rest of the town.

Tomorrow I will put the character sheet.

It would be impolite not to stay and eat the giant's food! Wasp would be pretty clear on that.

And... honestly I just think the revolver sounds cooler than the others.

So why aren't I voting Shotgun Bear? Because Rifles in Westerns don't get enough love, in my opinion.

Rune Circuits
Ok now, let's talk about Rune Circuits!

All the races of this world have a natural magical affinity, elements that they can control without problems. In the case of the elves these two elements are light and dark, but only those.

Trying to get over this apparent "weakness" the elves designed a method to wield the other elements, Rune Circuits.

Runes that were carved, painted or even knitted into different objects and activate when they receive mana. This way elves were capable of controlling four additional elements and their sub-elements.

Fire, Water, Earth and Air.

There was a problem though, for the runes to work they must be constantly feed with mana, and this usually ends with a very tired or in some cases, dead elf. It seemed like the project was going to fail, until one day some miner found the first mana crystal, a natural mineral that generates mana!

After that the elf Empire entered in a revolution. With the creation of the crystal generators, mana poles started appearing all over the Empire all connected with their cables, fill with magic. Soon every house had lights, ovens, fridges and showers! Not place was as advance.

The circuits are a perfect panacea though.

All the elements created by magic only exist for a short period of time the moment they stop receiving mana. So if someone dehydrated were to drink magic water, it wouldn't really help.

Ok then, vote closed!

4.- Western Hospitality
In the end, you decide to sit down and eat the food that Lisa so generously offered you.

"..."

And do your best to not look at her giant father's eyes.

"So! What brings you to our little town, Agis?" Lisa asks between bites of her food.

"Oh? Well… recently I was forced to become independent you could say," you start explaining while trying to avoid specifics. " And looking for a new place to call home is a little difficult for me, considering that…"

"You're a half-blood?" Lisa finishes for you before you could decide if you wanted them to know, your eyes wide in surprise, her face apologetic.

"How did you…?" You half ask, still surprise.

"I may not know a lot about drows but I can be quite perceptive, you know." She explains with while grinning and with a thumbs up, no doubt trying to relieve the situation.

"..." Her dad just nods.

Your shoulders do drop a little as you feel that a small weight was lifted from them.

"I guess so!" You respond with a smile too, "and yes, because I'm half-blood finding a place where I wouldn't have any problems could be somewhat difficult, but then I hear about this town and how it did reject anybody so…" You finish with a small shrug.

"Yup! Welcome to Deathcross Town! Land of the desperate and people that don't make very good decisions! Otherwise, we wouldn't have chosen to live in a place called Deathcross!" Lisa toasts with some water after finishing her cheer.

"Humf." Her father toasts too.

"I have wondered about the name of the town actually." You ask, your eyebrow going up with your curiosity.

"Well, the town was going to be called Crystal Town at first in honor to the big river that's nearby, the Crystal River," She starts explaining after putting her glass down, "original I know, but the more of the area was scouted people start realizing that, this is actually quite the horrible place to settle down!" She's still smiling but you think you saw her giver her dad a little glare.

"..."

The giant man just stays quiet though.

"To the west here's the Black Scorpion desert a cruel place full of sand, rock, and death. To the east, passing the river is the Agony forest, full of dangerous beasts and poisonous plants. To the north is the Ravenous Mountain, don't go there, just don't. And finally to the south is Red Bay our nearest neighbor." She pauses to take another sip of water.

"...Right, I came from the south, it wasn't that bad," you say while trying to comprehend how dangerous of a place this town actually was.

"Of yes, the land down south isn't that dangerous," she explains with a smile, that then turns into a frow, "is the waters near the bay that are the problem, they're full of pirates. And that's why the place is called Deathcross, because here's death in all directions."

"...I think I should look for another town." It's all you can say after that.

"I would blame you! Ha ha ha!" She answers with a laugh and is back to smiles again, "like I say most of the people that are here are desperate of came here by accident, but you know… I think that helps us to form tight bonds." She finishes with a fond smile.

"Hmmm." You wonder her words.

"Where are you staying?"

Your thoughts are interrupted by Richard's deep voice.

"O-oh?" You stutter for a moment, taken back by the man sudden question, "well, I was planning in camping outsi-"

"No way!" You're suddenly interrupted by a yelling Lisa, "we can't leave you stay out in the cold! You're staying here for free until you can stand on your own, right dad?" She decides all on her own.

"No please, I could never-" you try your best to reject her but…

"Stay." Says the giant with a glare.

"Ok!"

You decided to accept her kindness.

"Perfect! I will go to prepare your room right now!" Lisa just yells while running upstairs.

"..." Richard just stares at you for a moment before putting a gigantic hand over your shoulder and squeezing in what you assume is supposed to be a reassuring manner.

"Agh!" Too bad you only feel pain.

***

After that, you leave your baggage in your new room and decide that it was time to continue exploring this place.

[] Clinic: the only one in town, maybe is a good idea to check if the local doctor knows about healing, you usually wouldn't be so distrusting but that talk about this place being for the desperate… it makes you uneasy.

[] Big Store: here are a few unique stores around, is that a store of only ponchos? But this one seems to be a general one, it would be good to know the general prices of the local products.

[] Sheriff's Station: you don't want to do this but… maybe if a good idea if the local authority figure knows how you are? It would be better than being an unknown if problems happen, you think

Ok, character sheet update:

-Hand to Hand Combat (Student: 100/200 XP): You know how to punch and how to receive a punch, you have always like to get close and personal when fighting and that have help you develop something like a personal style, it still very bare bones though.
-Revolver (Trained: 50/400 XP): One of the few things your father left behind was his revolver, and blank bullets are cheap to buy, it's fair to say that you use that revolver a lot growing up.
-Dexterity (Trained: 0/400 XP): Your hands are fast and so are your reflexes, years of having nothing better to do but to train how to reload your revolver and do tricks have give you quite the fast hands and reaction time.
-Perception (Student: 50/200 XP): You can aim, you still new some seconds to get to those really tricky shoots but you can aim.
-Tracking (Student: 0/200 XP): You definitely won't die from hunger, but don't expect anything too fancy.
-Endurance (Student: 0/200 XP): You wouldn't say that a breeze can take you down, but you don't want to take chances with a stronger wind.
-Strength (Student: 150/200 XP): Bears really like to ask for physical tasks as payment, that has help you to stay in relative shape, you could do some more if you want abs though.

-Bear Summoner: You find easy to connect with the Bear spirits, you can summon one normal bear spirit without problem and force yourself to bring more, it can really make you exhausted though.

And this is definitely not a excuse to update the thread so I can hopefully have some more votes, not sire!

Well, sadly no new votes.

Oh well, votes closed:

[] Clinic: 1
[] Big Store: 1
[] Sheriff's Station: 3

We're going to visit the law then.

5.- Meeting the Law
You take steel your nerves and start walking towards the Sheriff's station, better be done with this quickly.

You could feel the intense sun the sky, it is high noon already and it looks like the town is starting to wake up. People are starting to move in the streets and stores are opening up.

Curious, why would they be starting the day so "late"?

Well, you really don't want to cook under this sun and some people are already starting to look curiously at you, no doubt there will be rumors of a new person in town soon enough, so you start moving faster.

***
You open the door to the station and are welcome by the sound of some bells ringing from up the door's frame.

The place was quite nice, very clean and with a recent layer of white paint.

Oh and like 5 people sleeping the nearby cell.

You're going to ignore that for now.

Your eyes instead move towards the desk in front of the door, it was just like the rest of the office, clean and completely ordered with a neat stack of papers at a side and a sleeping figure behind it.

"Really?" You whisper in a low voice.

Their hat was on top of their head and you couldn't see their face, but judging by their badge they were the town's Sheriff, and they look quite comfortable with their hands behind their heads and feet on the desk, lovely.

You consider just leaving and dealing with this later when you hear some of the prisoners start waking up.

"...Dammit," you really don't think is a good idea for the local symbol of justice to be sleep while the criminals are waking up, so start moving towards the sheriff to wake them up.

When suddenly, you feel the cold of metal pressing at the back of your head. That was a gun barrel.

"Howdy!" A very energetic voice came from behind you, it was difficult to recognize if the owner was male or female, "I don't think I have ever seen you in town before partner! What brings you to this lovely place today!" The voice continues, quite more happy that it should be considering the situation you think.

"I-I just wan-wanted to present myself to-to the Sheriff!" You stutter your answer, your mind still in shock, "I'm ne-new in town an-and didn't want to ca-cause problems!"

What's happening!? Are you being robbed? Is this a prison break? Can it even be considered a prison break when there are only three cells!? Why is the sheriff still sleeping!?

"Well… that's pretty nice of you partner!" The voice stops for a second before pulling back their gun and continues cheerfully.

"But it may be a little difficult to present yourself," they keep talking and slowly walking pass you and stopping to the side of the still sleeping sheriff, "to a dummy." They finish while taking the sleeping sheriff's hat and putting it on their own head, it takes you a second to realize that the sheriff is actually a disguise scarecrow.

"Buh? Wait, what!?"

This day is certainly getting too much for you.

"Pretty clever right? I put it here as bait in case some of the people in town decided to try to help some of the idiots here," they point towards the cells, "last night's party was quite wild so you never know when some drunk gets some fake courage and decides to do something stupid. Fools! They should know that Law never sleeps!" They finish by pushing their chest up in pride, their very flat chest.

"What?" Is all you can manage right now.

"Oh, right! You're new, my name is Law, I'm the Justicar that's acting as this town's sheriff! Nice to meet you!" They extend their hands to shake it with me.

At this point, your body just moves automatically and shakes the hand. While your brain starts to look at this… Law.

They're smaller than you, but judging by their firm grip they're quite strong, they have a white duster jacket, and sure enough, it has a star shape badge too, with a black shirt and white pants, boots and stetson hat. And you still don't know if they a man or woman, they have blonde hair tie in a ponytail that reaches their back and some striking green eyes, they looked lithe but solid at the same time, and their face was kind of cute but with some fierce eyes, it was quite confusing.

"I'm Agis, nice to meet you missssst-?" You try to subtly ask for it.

"Now, now, don't need to be formal, just call me Law!"

But they're not having any of it.

"We-well, now that I have presented myself I think if better if I leave you alone so you can deal with those," you try to not stare at the cells, "nice people, bye!"

You quickly start moving towards the door when suddenly Law stops you.

"Wait! Sorry to impose but I have a small question for you." They move from their desk to your side.

"Yes?" You have a bad feeling about this.

"I hope I'm not sounding insensitive by asking this but… do you, per any chance, know how to talk with spirits?" They ask in a hopeful tone, like they really hoping for a positive answer from me, "not that I think that all drows know how to do that! But I saw that pipe on your chest and I had heard rumors and-"

"Yes, I do." You interrupted before they could get going, you think you know where this is going.

"Great! Because I just got a report last night from the crystal mines about some kind of spirit animal going wild! I was really worried about how I could deal with this situation, after all, Law always finds a way but dealing with animal spirits usually is very tricky and with causes lots of collateral damage but if I have someone that could talk with them, this could be solved easily!"

They then put their hands together as if praying.

"Truly you arriving today must by a gift from the gods of Justice! You will help to keep this town, that's now your home, safe right?"

You try to avert your gaze, but their fierce eyes burn through yours with hope and burning desire for justice!

"You obviously will be rewarded after this!"

"Well…"

[] Help the Law!

[] Regretfully leave the Law!

Meet Law, the town's sheriff and quite the fund character to write.

Well it seems like everybody want some adventure!

Voted closed and not need for a tally honestly.

Now, the update will be tomorrow, but I think this is a good chance to make another vote.

What bullets does Agis has?

To avoid micromanaging let's assume that Agis always has "enough" bullets unless dramatically appropriate, it wouldn't even be that difficult for him honestly, rune bullets aren't that expensive after all they're basically shells to put the runes on, so the important question is, what kind of bullets does he has?

Pick 3:

[] Fire: "Burn baby burn!" This bullets are all about cooking the target, very useful against things that can burn, not so much if you're fighting something made of rock.
[] Explosion: "Boom goes the dynamite!" Ok the explosions aren't that big (the mana crystal of a revolver isn't that big) but it's enough to bring a tree down with one or two shoots, if you want to avoid collateral damage though, maybe try something else.

[] Water: "Water gun aren't just toys!" Very niche, very situational. But listen, some day a creature made of fire or electricity will try to kill you and this thing will save your life, they you will be see who's the crazy one.
[] Ice: "Let's break with ice!" You want to trap your opponent? This is your pick, a good shoot with this and you will have the feet of that bandit running away caught in ice. Not that lethal though, unless you use it in someones face to asphyxiate them.

[] Wind: "Wanna play some twister?" This bullet is less about killing and more about pushing someone several feet above the ground sending them flying, very effective in pushing someone off their horses.
[] Lighting: "Don't make me tased you!" Surprisingly not lethal, this bullets is more about paralyzing the target, unless the target is made completely from water, in which case this may kill it.

[] Earth: "Impact!" This bullet hit hard, is like throwing boulders at someone, a very small boulder, while the exploding bullet is about destruction this one if about focusing power, shoot one of these at a tree and it will go through it without problem.
[] Metal: "From here, to the wall, to the rune pole and right to your eye!" This bullets are the staple of the legendary gunslingers, they're made to ricochet and keep their force, an skilled gunner can make some amazing tricks with this bullet right before taking someones eye.
