The Voyage Within

I carefully entered sickbay and looked around.

The Doctor walked up, "Lieutenant, how can I help you today?"

I shook my head, "I am just visiting one of your guests today," I said and glanced past him towards Jennifer's biobed.

He nodded and lowered his voice, "I hope you can cheer her up. Dinah tried and I think it helped, but she is not feeling well."

I nodded and moved past, approaching the biobed where she was laying, reading a PADD held in her remaining hand, "Jennifer."

She glanced up and put her PADD in her lap, "Hey Zephyr."

I looked her over, "I thought I would see how you are recovering."

Jennifer sighed, "I'm good enough. Just stuck in here, the Doctor won't let me leave until he can fit me with the new hand."

"I see," I said and tilted my head as I studied her, "Are you sure you want a biosynthetic hand? I could likely build a very badass artificial one. Built in phaser and everything."

That got a shake of her head, "No thanks. I just want to get back to normal."

I nodded, "Alright. I'm sorry you got injured, if I been faster then maybe-"

"No," she said and frowned at me, "No, it's not your fault. Or anyone else's, I got sloppy. It's my fault."

"Jennifer, I don-"

"No, I mean it's my fault," she said and took a deep breath, "...It's my fault the Romulans got free. I got distracted and one of them had the opportunity to pull a hidden disruptor. That I missed that he had. I fucked up and I could have gotten everybody killed."

I considered that for several seconds and then I shook my head, "And I have missed several things that may very easily have blown the entire ship up. That's why there is more than one person in engineering, to catch those things before they happen. But even then, things do happen, people get hurt, injured. What we do is dangerous even normally, our specific situation is even more dangerous."

"And I fucked up."

"Possibly. Nobody else caught it either."

"I could have gotten everyone killed!"

"Nobody on our side died," I told her seriously, "Even if you messed up, that's not your fault, it's a procedural issue. These things are so complex that it's almost impossible for one single person to cause serious issues."

"Does not change the fact that I was the one that fucked up."

"...No, it does not," I agreed and then shook my head, "But as far as I am aware, we do not have any sort of time machine. So the best thing you can do is do better."

"I shouldn't even be in security, I just wasn't good enough for anything else, I just barely passed my-"

I growled deeply and she froze, silent, "And in my past I could barely move," I told her quietly, "So what if you barely passed, you passed, you got through the non-commissioned courses. That's who you were, is who you are the same as who you were?"

She didn't say anything, just looking down at her missing hand.

I snorted at her, "That's up to you. Nobody else can tell you who you are, just who you were. Words do not matter, thoughts do not matter. Actions matter. You don't think you're good enough? So be better."

Jennifer frowned, looking at the stump of her left arm before she turned to me, "...You're a bit of an ass at times."

"I know."

She sighed and leaned back against the bed as she regarded me, "...You're not wrong though. I can't exactly drop out of Starfleet, we're across the galaxy."

I nodded, "We are. And I usually am."

That earned me a firm tap at the end of my snout from her remaining hand as she scowled at me.

I sighed and pressed my snout against her hand, "You're Dinah's mate and I like to think you're a friend. I want you to stay safe and happy. I can't keep you safe, so you getting better is the only real alternative."

She looked up at me for several long moments, "You're not very good at this sort of thing."

I grumbled and let out a small sigh, "...I know. We need a ship counselor."

Jennifer sighed a bit and nodded, pulling her hand away, "Yeah, I guess."

I nodded a bit, "I understand. I just want to do something to help. …And offer for badass artificial hand stands."

That got an almost real smile, "Thanks, but I think I want something as close to my old one as possible. Doc is growing my new one now, it should be ready in a week or so."

Hmm.

Maybe an artificial hand was out, but I couldn't help but remember the alternative suit they suggested making for me at the academy. The tank one. Still wasn't effective for me, it was too big for almost any environment I would actually need it for.

But would have handled a disruptor blast like this without issue. And I knew special forces had dedicated armored suits when they expected heavy combat. It was rather specialized equipment, we didn't have any onboard.

Me wearing something like it was still too bulky to move around, but the rest of the crew wouldn't be. And they were a lot squishier than I am.

We did have those in the databanks, I bet I could take one and improve it. Seriously, theirs weren't even powered.

"I understand," I said, "get some rest, I'll stop bothering you."

"It's alright. Thanks for visiting."

He'll make power armor when he gets big enough that he can mount warp engines on it...

"Uhh… ma'am? The manifest says we have four shuttles, but I only see three?"

"Yes Lieutenant, that's right."

"But, uhh , Where's the fourth one"

"Who's the captain Lieutenant?"

"That'd be Captain Zepher ma'am."

"Name ring any bells Lieutenant?"

"… just the- No. It can't be!"

"Yep. The Captain is that Zepher"

"But what does that have to do with the shuttle?"

"The Captain is too big to fit in a standard shuttle. So he built warp drives into his personal space suit, along with everything else he could cram in. It's in cargo bay four."

…..

"Wanna see it Lieutenant?"

"Can we?!"

"If you finish up here we can."

"Right away ma'am!"

I wondered if Zephyr was going to make her an armored gauntlet, powered, with built-in phaser. Empty, so she can put her grown hand in it once ready. Meanwhile, functions as a hand substitute...
(OK, sense of touch is a bit off, because he's still working on the holographic feedback sensors, but, still...)

With so little mass and great streamlining, I wonder how high he could push the warp factor on it...

Ya know, might make a great excuse as a test platform for the new nacelles they are developing for Zephyr. So here me out, a ring platform, with those nacelle's at equidistant points surrounding the ship, I mean if StarWars can make a large star destroyer sized hyper ring for a star destroyer, Zephyr could make a warp version of one for his power armor to test :p

If a dragon makes power armor, could you say that he's bringing a Sword of the Stars?
Mild joke aside, it's hilarious how everyone reading immediately doubts him denying making a set for himself.

Hmm.. a wearable shuttle... or maybe a runabout class ship sized for a dragon.

Fit a pair of fusion plants along the spine and a warpcore at the base of the tail.
Mount phaser strips along the leading edge of the wings. Oh, and at the top and bottom of his head.
The deflector mounted at the base of his neck on his chest.
Bussard collector on his belly?
Shield emitters spread out on every non-bending part of the suit.
Maybe mount the warp coils around the tail? Basically since the coils are usually sort of donut shaped, just stick the tail in the middle?
Integrated replicator and environmental system to keep a dragon in air, water and food during long flights.
Heads up display and autopilot so that he can watch a movie or take a nap without having to constantly keep his eye on the road.

Some new technologies would have to be created. Bendable plasma conduits is a must have. Some sort of new type of reconfigurable field geometries for both the warp field and the shield would be needed or the suit would have to lock in place as soon as he wanted to use the shields or go to warp. Maybe use his brain computer for on the fly field calculations? Would need a brain-computer-interface in that case. He would finally be a cyberdragon. Definitely need some new bendy armour weave so that his hull has as much protection at the joints as it would have at the rigid sections.

Lots of fun in innovating all of it. He should have the idea whilst designing the power armour for the redshirts so that he can have fun for a decade or so designing it.

This actually seems like it could cause problems; returning to the past being a unachievable ideal is a pretty major point of KSBD.

Even if it is achievable, it'd probably be better to move on to greater things to decatastrophize the loss of the present.

Edit: funnily enough I believe that this would make getting a awesome robot hand with a rocket-punch medicinal and therapeutic.

I believe that the ship has detachable components already; he might be able to make his powered armor into a ship-module instead.

Edit:
"I'm going to make power armor!"
He's already made humanoid drones; humanoid powered armor wouldn't be too much different then that.

KSBD? What is that? Did you mean K6BD?
Pretty sure this isn't Kill Six (6) Billion Demons...

PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder... KSBD is a relative of that term? 'BD' is Battle Damage? I don't know what the 'KS' bit could be...

Somehow I doubt 'KSBD Reborn Baby Dolls' is relevant...

Searches aren't helping...

Neither of you can spell letters apparently.
I've never claimed to have any particular skills in that area, but we do what we can. (Sometimes I can't spell worth a dame. :) ) I'd still really like to know what you meant...

KSBD is something to do with time travel? I went through several lists of time-travel film names, but nothing sprang out...

I'm fucking dyslexic or something; that should read "numbers" not "letters". That's on me.

I raised my right forepaw to tap the button by the door, waiting.

"Enter."

The door opened before me and I entered Tuvok's small office. Moving to sit down, I glanced back before shifting my tail until the door could close before I turned back to look at him across his desk/console, "You saw my suggestion, sir?"

"I did, lieutenant," Tuvok agreed, "May I ask where you got the idea?"

I tilted my head, "We need specialists. Security is doing a good job, but I believe we need a special team with specialist equipment for situations such as the one with the Romulans. Boarding a hostile ship is not for generalists."

Tuvok looked like he considered it before he answered, "And you have ideas for members of this group?"

I shook my head, "No. That's your territory. I have ideas for the equipment they may need. I have things laid out in the suggestion I sent you."

Tuvok nodded and picked up to study his PADD, "Powered armored suits."

"Indeed. That's just a rough outline, nothing has been designed yet. I want to know if it is of interest before I put time into it," I admitted, "But surely we can supply something better for our people doing something as hazardous as boarding an enemy vessel than a uniform."

"Agreed," Tuvok said before he nodded, "Very well. I will bring the matter up with The Captain."

I nodded, "Thank you, Commander. Was there anything else?"

"Yes. Has there been any progress on accessing the Romulan database?"

I growled softly and shook my head, "No, not so far. I have several algorithms working on it, it'll get through eventually but it's a matter of time. It may be a couple of days or it may be years. But at this point, I do not believe it to contain anything time critical."

"Understood. Dismissed, lieutenant."

I nodded to him and carefully shifted around, opening the door and leaving his office.

Hopefully the idea gets approved. But it wasn't my department and even if it was, I didn't have the bandwidth for another project, especially something as time intensive as that.

Now, I needed to-

"Torres to Zephyr."

I paused, "Zephyr here."

"Could you come to the shuttlebay? I need you to have a look at something."

Apparently go to the shuttlebay.

"On my way," I answered and closed the channel before heading for the cargolift.

It wasn't a long trip and soon I padded into the shuttlebay, quickly spotting B'Elanna standing next to one of the Romulan shuttlecraft.

"What do we have?" I asked as I moved up to her.

She glanced up from her PADD, "I think I have something for the warp coil project," she said, "The shuttle design wasn't in the database so I had a look. They're doing something interesting with their EPS conduits, have a look at this," she said and held her PADD out.

Taking it carefully between a pair of claws, I peered at the tiny screen before I glanced at her, "...This is accurate?"

"Seems to be," she agreed, taking the PADD as I handed it back, "They're almost ten percent more efficient than ours, but what more, if I understand your math for the new warp coil design, more compatible."

I nodded, "You're right, they are," I said and looked towards the shuttle, bringing the design of the probe up in my visor, "If we can copy the design, it would greatly improve the powerflow and efficiency. Maybe."

She crossed her arms, "That was my thought as well, but there's a problem with that."

"Yeah," I grumbled, "Doing it on a probe, sure. Shuttle would be difficult. But for it to be actually useful, we would need to do it on Voyager."

"Replacing the entire EPS network on Voyager would be a nightmare," B'Elanna agreed, "And that's even if the new frequency and amplitude turns out to be compatible with our current systems and I can guarantee at least the sensors will have major issues with both."

I let out a small sigh, "Never mind that replacing the entire EPS grid would make the repairs we did at Alpha look like a weekend project. With all changes necessary to make it actually work with our equipment… we're looking at six months at the very least."

"And if anything slips, closer to a year," B'Elanna agreed with a scowl, "Sitting still for a year would not be popular for the crew. Yet alone finding somewhere safe enough to do that…"

"That would be a big ask even somewhere like Alpha," I agreed, "We may have been pushing it with our hosts staying as long as we did. What's more, I'm not sure the work could be done on the surface of a planet, it would mean disassembling… a lot of the ship."

B'Elanna nodded, "Not really practical. But, we may be able to use it for our shuttles. And we may be able to pull some lessons from it for our own systems."

I flexed my claws against the floor in thought, "...Maybe, or maybe converters," I admitted, "I don't have time to look at it myself, but keep poking at it. If you figure it out, put together a proposal we can try on one of the shuttles."

"And the probe test next week?"

I shook my head, "Keep the design as is, it's too late to change it right now. We may try it on the second test if it looks to work out."

"Alright," she said, glancing towards the romulan shuttle, "I'll keep working on it."

"Repensum est Canicula insect."

Speaking of which, considering Zephyr's general dislike of Trek 'verse new age hippy music I wonder if he would like the human tracks from that game, I quite like Combat_Human_001 myself. Also, the Sol Force power armor in the SWOTS universe looks absolutely badass, like a cross between Samus's power suit and Mk4 Astartes armor.Sword of the Stars races in Mass Effect | SpaceBattles
