-[x] What are the requirements for someone, or someones-plural, to become a Guest of the Velvet Room?

[X] Carry out your original plan. Inform Igor of Elizabeth's intentions and wait for Theodore before you depart to the Sea of Souls.
-[X] Suggest that your master accompany you both, if only briefly.
-[X] Elizabeth may have no desire to see him presently, as she said, but that does not absolve her of her responsibilities. Igor is your master, Margaret would- *ahem* You would abhor letting Elizabeth's plan proceed without his express permission.
-[X] Do we still have a copy of that contract? Hand him one.

Being Enveloped By Kindness
It's strange. You've never cried before. And... why would you? Are you not a Ruler of Power, a being far beyond such... human things?

Yet your feelings still overwhelmed you.

You look up and see the waiting face of your master. He accepts back the tissue as he stands up, turning around and comfortably sitting down on his chair once more.

You take a moment to look around as you finish composing yourself. The chamber you are currently in is not very dissimilar to the ones Igor tends to reside in most of the time. Barren, except for a chair and occasionally a desk or a table. A messy web of dark blue curtains delimits the 'walls' of the room as they fall from above.

You decide to slightly alter your plans. You are under no hurry to leave the Velvet Room so soon after your return. Your sisters can wait, for now.

"Sister!"

You turn around at the sound of the familiar voice, as Theodore emerges from beyond the curtains, face lit up in joy.

A smile comes unbidden to your lips, and you curtsy as he approaches. "Brother--"

You almost shout in surprise when he… hugs you. You're left completely baffled as he envelops both your smaller frame and your arms.

"...Theodore," you manage to say calmly. "What are you doing?"

"I am hugging you. It is a gesture of affection humans perform with their loved ones after they have failed to see them for long periods of time." He tells you. "I learned of it from one of the books Elizabeth left behind."

Your brother releases you from the embrace as your master quietly watches the bizarre display from his seat. "...I see."

He smiles down at you. "It is a relief to see you safe and sound, Lavenza. When you vanished so suddenly, I... I truly feared the worst," his smile noticeably dims in intensity. He gestures to Igor. "Thankfully, our master explained everything to us. I would have never guessed you would be someone who would take a so-called 'vacation', and in the outside world, no less…"

You fix your ruffled dress as you return his smile. "It was… an experience, certainly." You concentrate back on your master as he passively waits for you to speak. "There are some things I must tell you, master." You start, and he nods in encouragement. "While in my travels through the worlds, I encountered Elizabeth."

Theodore seems taken aback. "You met with our sister?"

"I see," Igor clasps his hands together under his nose as he leans forward. "She must have sought you out with a specific purpose in mind. How did she become aware of your location?"

You fish Margaret's letter out of your pockets, and he raises an eyebrow. "It is likely that Margaret told her." You hand him the letter. "At her request, she had Elizabeth deliver this letter to me."

Igor briefly inspects it. "Intriguing, yet unsurprising. I will have some words with your eldest sister after she returns." He says, his tone as neutral as always as he returns it.

...You hope you haven't landed her in any severe trouble.

"May I see it?" Requests your brother, his expression worried. He shakes his head with a frown as he reads through the letter. "I had no knowledge of any of this…"

"In any case, " you continue. "By the time she found me, I had already established myself with the locals of that world, including an alien being from another world, capable of granting one's wishes…"

You tell them everything. The Incubator Collective, the Witches and their familiars, the magical girls and your new acquaintances…

When you describe in detail the sick and twisted fate of the magical girls, your master's constant grin subsides, while Theodore shows outright disgust as you unveil the Grief Seed in your pockets.

-=-

"What a horrifying contraption." Your master finally declares after a prolonged examination of the Grief Seed. He holds it up to one of his eyes, squinting closely. "The curses that comprise this 'Grief' you speak of, are without a single doubt, of human origin."

You purse your lips when he hands it back to you. "I… Is there truly nothing that can be done for them, master? Surely…" you trail off helplessly, uncertain how to continue.

He shakes his head, uncharacteristically solemn. "I am afraid not, young Lavenza. Whatever will that once comprised this Grief has long been twisted beyond recognition." He closes his eyes tiredly. "Restoring it is beyond my power."

You accept his explanation as your brother stares at the Grief Seed in your hands with wide eyes. Theodore's palpable happiness over your return had been slowly disappearing as your tale progressed. He looks away. "I-I cannot even fathom why someone would do something like this…"

"It's all for the collection of energy, at the very least according to Kyubey." You say, carefully pocketing the Grief Seed. "They seek to stop 'entropy' and the 'heat death of the universe' by gathering massive amounts of energy. Apparently, the transformation of a magical girl into a Witch generates the amount they need and much more."

You explain as best you can the concepts detailed to you by the Incubator, yet your master seems unaware of what entropy even is in the first place. ...Was it all just another gilded lie from the alien?

You move on to the events of the past few days spent in Mitakihara. Mami Tomoe and her protegé, the Witches you fought and killed, Elizabeth's arrival, Homura Akemi's death and resurrection, the Walpurgis Night…

You stop while speaking about Mami. The fire of determination present in her eyes while she spoke of her reasons for fighting still lingers in your memories, despite everything. "Master, I must admit… I am curious." You start. "What are the requirements for someone to become a guest of the Velvet Room?"

"Requirements, you say?" He ponders for a moment. "Those who subconsciously call out to the Velvet Room are people who possess a strong will, and in most cases, they are likely about to embark on an ordeal of their own. So long as they sign the contract of their own free will, of course."

You nod gratefully. "I see. Thank you for clarifying my doubts."

Igor looks at you with curiosity. "You believe this… 'Mami Tomoe' has the potential to become a guest of the Velvet Room?"

"P-Perhaps," you stutter, caught off guard.

He smiles. "It is certainly a possibility, my dear. As with many things in this room, I have no control over the selection of our guests. Only time will tell the ultimate outcome of this girl's fate."

Theodore seems awed. "Humans capable of performing true magic at great cost to themselves…" he mumbles to himself. "It is like something out of a fairy tale…"

You resume your tale, delving into great detail about Elizabeth's actions. You speak of her tale regarding the end of the world and of the great seal beyond the Sea of Souls, of her dealings with the Incubator, and of her wish…

-=-

Silence reigns after you eventually finish.

Igor, his eyes closed as you both anxiously wait for a response, sighs. "It is as I feared, then." You blink, and a familiar desk appears in front of him. Light sparkles from his hands as a deck of cards is swiftly spread across the surface by an invisible force. "Elizabeth is blinded by the grief brought about by the loss of her dearest guest. Her... reckless actions in the near future could have devastating consequences."

With a simple gesture, the cards glow once again as they are turned over, revealing them to you.

Death. The thirteenth Arcana.

Reverse Judgement. The twentieth Arcana.

Star. The seventeenth Arcana.

You stare in confusion as the other cards vanish, leaving only those three on the desk. "...Master?"

"I am witnessing your fate, my dear." He looks down at the cards. "I see, I see." The desk and the cards suddenly disperse into shards of light as Igor looks up at you once more. "Even with the path ahead partially clouded by an uncertain fog, the ordeal before you is clear to me, Lavenza."

An ordeal...

You swallow your nerves, the image of the Death Arcana burned into your vision. "I… I am having some... difficulties keeping myself as balanced and aloof as I should be. My heart cries out to see justice done, but... to do so would mean betraying the tenets of my own strength." You grit your teeth, avoiding his gaze. "I do not know what to do."

A moment passes as you stew in your own frustrations. You glance back in surprise when someone rests a hand in your shoulders. It's your brother.

"You are just like her." He tells you with a content smile. "Always worrying over matters I could never hope to comprehend…" he trails off as he gives you some space. "But that is fine. You need only remember that you are not alone, little sister." He gestures proudly at himself. "After all, I will accompany you every step of the way in this... 'ordeal' of yours. I am certain our sisters would do the same."

You stare at your brother in perplexion. That… doesn't aid you at all in your dilemma. In fact, it's completely irrelevant.

Yet… Your brother just pledged his unconditional support in whatever is to happen, despite admitting his total ignorance on the topic.

...What can you even say in the face of such unflinching loyalty?

"...Thank you, Theodore." You offer him a grateful smile. "Your words mean much to me." You resist the urge to roll your eyes when he puffs up his chest in response, exceedingly proud of himself.

Your master grins. "You are ready." He snaps his gloved fingers, and a large blue and gold ornate door materializes to the side. Your grip on your Grimoire tightens as light spills from the newly created opening. "Destiny awaits you beyond this door, young Lavenza." His bulging eyes briefly glance at your brother. "You may accompany her if you so wish, Theodore. I will remain here."

Oooh, I really liked this update. I like that we consulted Igor and I loved how you wrote out that whole scene. It's fascinating seeing the Velvet Room attendants interact without any of their guests present, and really a major draw for me to this tale. I'm a tad surprised that Igor didn't know of at least the concept of the entropic decay of the universe; is it possible that no such thing exists in the Persona universe? Or, well, a more mundane explanation is that even Igor's knowledge has its limits. Nice touch with the card reading, too. I'm not at all familiar with what the different Arcana stand for, but it was still neat to see Igor reading Lavenza's cards. I get the feeling that's about as direct as Igor gets in providing aid and guidance to his charges.

But man, you know something's fucked up when it gets even Igor to stop grinning. Still, just throwing out a mad idea here, even if we can't reverse or help the soul within the grief seed become human again, would it be possible to 'break' it open and set the soul free inside the Sea of Souls? Or maybe that's not how it works... It's three hours past midnight, I'm rambling incoherently, so I'll stop.

So yeah, loved the update. <3

I'm no expert on the Tarot, but Igor's reading for Lavenza is

* Death: Not necessarily a bad card. It means Change, Capital-C here, of a lasting or durable kind. Like surviving a friend or lover life moves on but is never the same. Or a child maturing into puberty, a teenager maturing into adulthood, or an adult maturing into a senior citizen, it is a change of state that is not (normally) reversible. It also represents the need to let go, to change paths. Sometimes a door closes. Through this other doors open. Are the doors the same in value? Maybe, maybe not. Death does not go out of its way spread ruin, but it also doesn't go out of its way to spread fortune either.

* Judgement, Reversed: This is the element I am the most shakey on. In the Mythopoetic Reading of the Tarot, Arcana XX is the gateway to the World. This is akin to a Christian reaching Christ or a Buddhist reaching O-Enma. A choice is to be made, a decision of cosmic worth. Does Christ say, "Hello, brother! Come and sup the Water of Life forevermore." or does he say "I am sorry, but I do not know you, stranger. Away with you!" or does what the Cosmic Judge say fall in between the two. Purgatory, Reincarnation/Transmigration, or even Limbo can result.

On the personal side, Judgement Reversed represents self-doubt, self-criticism, 'refusing the call'. I think that both Lavenza and Elizabeth are self-critical. Lavenza because of what happened to her by Jaldaboth's hands. Surely if she zigged instead of zagged, or was a little faster, a little stronger. But Lavenza was just born, Igor was overwhelmed, and who knows what the other Velvet Siblings were up to. For Lavenza, this manifests as self-doubt. Is she good enough? Surely she should of been able to defend the Master against the God of Control. Surely Lavenza could protect herself from being conceptionally ripped in half, with all the existential pain that comes with it. Except she doesn't even have the outlet of pain because the God of Control bids you: Hurt not. This is as you've always been.

Elizabeth, on the other hand, fell in deep unrequited love with Makoto Yuki. I don't blame her, exactly. Seeing Makoto grow from an emotionally stunted, just barely functioning person to someone with Max Charm, Max Courage, Max Intelligence, and so many (all?) Social links forged, it's quite the transformation. I can see if I tip my head, how some would even see it as beautiful. And then Makoto (much like Madoka) full of unconditional love for the world, the good and the bad, chose to sacrifice himself so the world he loves could continue to exist. In the grand scheme of things, that's a win for humanity. For those who know Yuki-san personally, it's a great loss. But then, death is a great loss in general. The dead die and rest in peace. The living continue to live until their time is due.
Needless to say, Elizabeth blames herself for all of this.
It's about as rational as Lavenza's self-doubts and self-blame for Jaldaboth.

* Star: The Star is a moment of hope after the ruin promised by the lightning-struck Tower. Ruin has come and gone, and things are going to be okay. It's the evening star after a stormy day, proving that the storm has passed. It's the quiet on the battlefield at the hour of an armistice, It's a letter/care package from home while in the Army. But Hope is fleeting, rely on the Star too much and it will pass into the Moon. (Ultimately, that's a good thing, because the Moon eventually passes into the Sun, which is an awesome card.)

-[X] The soul of a Magical Girl is doomed to become twisted by curses. Humans, turned into beasts... What would become of your sister?
-[X] This cannot continue. There will be an out to this. The question is, can you find it?

From what I remember of the 3 card draw Igor does at the start of p4, each card represents the past, the present, and the future, respectively.

The past, death, represents how Lavenza has changed, grown, and matured during her journey through PMMM. The end of the old, and the start of the new, etc.

The present, reversed judgement, represents Lavenza's indecisiveness as to what she should do about Elizabeth. This is our current issue, and if we do not act decisively, shit will go downhill quick.

The future, the star, represents how there is still hope in the future, even if it everything has gone to shit. We still have a chance to save Elizabeth, so we'd best hop on it before we let it get away!

Respectfully, I disagree. While Death(XIII) is the past, It's the trauma we experienced at the hands of Jaldaboth. Alternatively, it's Elizabeth's despair at Makoto Yuki's fate.

Judgement Reversed (XX) is our present and again there's a symmetry. Lavenza is mentally and emotionally hurt and is slowly recovering from Jaldaboth's attack on the Velvet Room. Elizabeth is willfully breaking rules, choosing to ignore the call (back) to duty, making every excuse to justify what she wants to do.

I predict that this will end with Satanel's Sinful Shell vs Messiah's Great Seal, with Liz's (actually Makoto's) Messiah winning. How can a Sinfull Shell stop one who is choosing to sin 'for the greater good'?

The Star (XVII) is our future. But I think that is Lavenza awakening her own Persona. This Persona while weak for now (like all starting Personae), in its ultimate form represents the restoration of Witches into humans without Madokami being involved. This turns out to be Elizabeth's hope as well.

Where Omens Lead
The newly-materialized entrance into the heart of the Collective Unconscious towers over the room as you take a moment to gather your bearings.

Even if you lack in-depth knowledge of the tarot readings your master likes to partake in, you know enough to be confident in your imminent success on this ordeal. After all, the Sun shines brightly with the light of hope, regardless of Death's encroaching influence.

"I understand." You curtsy respectfully at Igor, who simply relaxes deeper into his chair as he tiredly closes his eyes. "Farewell, master."

The thought of leaving your master alone for an extended period of time briefly disquiets you, before you swiftly dismiss the idea. He wouldn't have offered Theodore the choice to accompany you if he wasn't certain he would be fine if left unattended.

You stride through the door, your brother following close behind, and are greeted by a familiar sight.

It's endless. A galaxy of individual twinkling stars, so close to each other, yet so far apart at the same time. You extend your senses as you ignore Theodore's own aura of power as best you can, and you are briefly overwhelmed by the number of souls harbored here.

The reminder brings a sour grimace to your expression. The soul of a magical girl, doomed to become twisted by curses. Humans turned into beasts...

You cannot allow any of this to continue. You will find an out to this predicament. But first, you must stop Elizabeth from becoming a magical girl.

...What would become of your sister, should the Incubator decide not to uphold its end of the contact? The mere thought of it upsets you greatly.

The door behind you creaks as it closes on its own, Theodore passing through before it vanishes into nothingness as he looks around. "Well…" he trails off as he dusts off his vest, clearly lost. "We have arrived. What next, little sister?"

"We search for our sisters." You state demurely, not eager to waste any time. "Unless they are concealing themselves from us, I'm certain we will sense their presence soon enough." You turn in an arbitrary direction and begin walking towards it. "Come along, brother."

He nods in acknowledgment as he falls in step behind you.

-=-

The never-ending void of the Sea of Souls is occasionally broken up by the presence of a human soul close-by as you journey through it. You refrain from disturbing the souls you encounter-- they are irrelevant to your purpose here.

...You lose coherent track of time after you pass the fiftieth soul, your patience starting to wear thin.

"Sister?" You turn around at your brother's inquisitive voice. He absentmindedly gazes upwards, towards the distant stars, as you raise an eyebrow. "I was wondering… could you describe in detail this… 'Mitakihara' you visited in the outside world?"

There's no harm in doing so, you suppose. "It was a beautiful human city, with breathtaking man-made spires that reached towards the heavens." You say. "I have only seen one other city like it in the past, and Mitakihara was far more superior."

Perhaps it's unfair to compare two cities from different worlds, but you don't particularly care. Although, some could say Tokyo has its own particular charm…

You continue searching for a sign of your sisters as you describe to your brother the wonders you witnessed. To its lush and flowing gardens, to a gigantic dome-like structure, to the towering edifices that mainly comprise its skyline...

Theodore seems satisfied when you finish. "Thank you, Lavenza." He brings a hand to his chin pensively. "Truly, the outside world is magnificent. ...Perhaps I will visit Mitakihara in the future. Once this whole matter is resolved, of course--"

"There!"

You cut off your brother as you feel a very familiar presence at the edges of your senses.

It's Margaret.

You promptly grab hold of your brother, heedless of his protests, and rapidly dash for her location.

It's not very long before you reach her, and the wind rushes past your ears as you halt in your run, releasing your grip on Theodore.

"Sister!"

Your sister has her back turned to you as she stares upwards, and you frown when you notice the object of her attention.

In the far distance, a shining golden door looms over the landscape. It's absolutely gigantic in scope.

...You can scarcely believe your eyes. How could you have you missed this structure beforehand?

You look back at your sister as she continues staring at the massive gate. "...Margaret?" You step closer to her when she remains silent. "Is something the matter?"

You flinch when she suddenly turns around, intensely looking down at you as you halt your advance.

Something is wrong.

Theodore speaks up as he amicably walks up to your sister. "Oh, Margaret, you won't believe what our sister has--"

You scream in distress when both of your siblings erupt in a blast of red light.

Theodore is violently thrown back as Margaret's immense power flares around her, her own Grimoire already opened and levitating between her hands as she swiftly gains altitude over you. A myriad of Arcana Cards surround her as the stars of the Sea of Souls suddenly grow faint and distant-- a battlefield manipulation technique, you realize. One you are intimately familiar with, after all, she's the one who taught it to you.

Margaret's reddish aura glows once more as she shatters one the Arcana Cards circling her, primed for an attack as you stand frozen in place.

"Begone!" Your sister exclaims, genuine scorn and disdain unmistakable in her voice as she summons a Persona.

What do you do?

[] Defend yourself. Regardless of whatever madness has overcome your sister, letting her strike you undeterred would be foolish.
-[] Attempt to restrain her. With the advantage in numbers, you will surely triumph.
--[] How? (Initial battle plan)
---[] Engage her personally in combat, making sure to match her blows. Have Theodore support you in the sidelines.
---[] Engage her simultaneously. You've never practiced anything like this before, but perhaps it could work...
---[] Something else?
-[] Attempt to reason with her. Surely, there is no need to battle between siblings in such a crucial moment.
--[] What will you say to her?
-[] Do something else?

[] Retreat from the battle before it truly can begin. Engaging Margaret is far too risky…
-[] Attempt to use the iron key to the Portal Chamber.
-[] Attempt to disengage and hurry towards the golden door. You must stop Elizabeth, now!
-[] Do something else?

[] Write-In.

You are (presumably) entering combat with a being that can match and surpass your power, so updates will be shorter until the battle ends.

Retreating is a valid choice.

Um, how well would retreating actually work if Margaret just used some sort of battlefield manipulation spell that seems to have made everything else farther away? Is that something we can feasibly get out of or would Margaret just adjust it to keep us from running away?

It's not invincible. If you retreat through a portal back to the Portal Chamber, then it won't do anything. If you decide to run, then Lavenza can just overpower it.

It's the same trick Caroline and Justine used to make a copy of the Velvet Room in NG+.

Right, my concern is that Margaret has already taken control of the battlefield and would be able to seriously hamper our efforts to escape. Basically we can't just run away or bypass her, but instead have to overcome her in some fashion. So my view is that trying to run away from somebody who casually warps space isn't going to work out very well. Also that Margeret creating some sort of battlefield to fight in is rather counter to her request for us to leave. Granted I don't know just how crazed or out of it she is so she might not recognize that she's making it harder for Lavenza and Theodore to leave.

I'm... at a loss here, I'll admit. I guess there isn't a lot of interest in the quest anymore?

Does anyone have any suggestions or something? Obviously, I don't want to end this so... abruptly, but there can't really be a quest if there's no one around to actually vote in it.

Well the first suggestion I have is to cut down the voting options. Give us a few distinct, concrete options. I.E. Run away, talk, fight. I for one didn't actually vote since I don't like having to write up an actual battle plan. (Well that and I'd prefer to run to the door, but didn't think that would work out very well.) If that doesn't generate voters then you could try writing some side stories, such as what Mami thinks of all this or what Madoka and Homura are up to, in order to get people interested again. The final suggestion is to drop this as a quest and turn it into a more traditional story.

[X] Defend yourself. Regardless of whatever madness has overcome your sister, letting her strike you undeterred would be foolish.
-[X] Attempt to rush her and hurry towards the golden door. She won't be expecting such rash tactics from you!

Sorry. A bunch of other things happened today and I wasn't able to vote.

I'd hate to see it end, but I plead guilty in not having voted much myself. I'm usually just too indecisive to come up with a good vote or to decide what vote I want to go with. :x

Thank you for the feedback. I'll need to think about it some more.

It's fine, honestly. The last thing I'd want is for people to force themselves into participating.

Voting is not closed.

I've been at a total loss ever since Elizabeth decided she wanted a contract, and all reasonable means have been exhausted.
This is just plain too tired to keep trying.

I'm waiting for this arc to be over pretty much.
Its too tiring to vote on.
