The Ultimate WAD - A Thread to celebrate Doom in General.

So, on topic, Touhou Doom got an update recently that polishes it significantly. It's gone from jank to something on an almost professional level.

...well I'm exaggerating a little bit it's definitely improved a lot. I'd recommend giving it a playthrough with Demonsteele for MAXIMUM WEEB (and also because being able to jump dash and smack bullets out of the air with your sword makes a quite hard mod somewhat easier). Also, fighting Youmu as Hae-Lin is a blast.

Meh, you should save this thread for proper WADs, not a sequel of not-Painkiller: Press "E" for an Awesome Execution. Over, over, over and over again, such as the latest Golden Sun wad update or something.

At the very least the MC doesn't have a knock-off Halo-suit. Will it have an average story with a shitty ending too? Will the epilogue be sold separatedly this time? :V

Well if that's what you think.

For me this game is what got me into DOOM in the first place, and I still consider it the best iteration.

Who wants to use the Super Shotgun to take down an undead Maggie Tatcher and her legion of hell?

On September 24th, Margaret Thatcher will rise from her grave. Only you can send her back to Hell.

3D: Doom Daddy Digital is proud to present 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐄, a new 𝙳𝙾𝙾𝙼 adventure for PC, Mac, Linux and whatever the hell you want to try running it on.
𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐄 is a Boom-compatible 𝙳𝙾𝙾𝙼 WAD that you can play on almost any computer hardware, and it's completely free! The game has five levels of difficulty and supports co-op and deathmatch play.

...the fuck?

I started playing again, running Guncaster with the Sunder map pack. It's pretty cool, aside from all the switch hunting... except that the last level crashes to desktop on loading. Not sure why.

Anyway, can any of you recommend me any good slaughtermap WADs, or some well-done more sedate ones?

Going Down has both well done sedate levels and slaughtermap levels, and in general is just really really high quality. The theme is descending down the floors of a skyscraper from the roof and things quickly get...weird. And mindfucky. Reality begins to unravel more and more with every floor you descend, starting with a level where you spend the entire map travelling back and forth between two periods in time, then shit like this starts happening, and finally the elevator spits you out into the bowels of Hell itself. Which is where the slaughtermaps start. Very good megawad.

Also, this is very good:

I was doing a run of Sunder with Guncaster, until I hit the final level - City at the Mouth of Ire - which kept crashing on me, and the one time I got it to work I managed to screw up and get myself trapped. So I started running Going Down with Project Brutality and wow, this WAD is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Pretty fun, though, at least until I hit Broken Records. What's supposed to happen in that map is that you pick up a Soulsphere and a Megaarmour, whereupon the door to the next area opens, but I seem to have encountered a bug that prevents the door from opening no matter what I do, and I can't seem to figure out how to activate cheats to bypass it. And the level has a script that keeps spawning enemies. So unless I can figure out how to bypass it, I'm stuck.

So I actually played the original 3 Dooms for the first time ever last year (which is surprising since I grew up in the 90s and have played videogames my whole life) and I have to say it really holds up. Even without nostalgia it remains one of the most fun FPSs I have ever played.

Anyway, I want to play some more. What are the best mods?

the original 3 Dooms
Do you mean Ultimate, 2, and Final? Or is 3 included in that? I'm just curious.

Depends on what you're into. If you want a power fantasy where you blow away hundreds of monsters with single salvoes of your gigantic metal penis substitutes, look no further than Russian Overkill and Guncaster. If you want something a little more restrained with an added heaping helping of gore, Project Brutality might be your thing (by the way, don't do Brutal Doom. The creator is reportedly quite an asshole). Trailblazer and Demonsteele are also cool. Unfortunately, I'm not very deep into the fandom, so I can't help you if all you want is a little extra spice to the demonkilling.

I think it was Doom I, II and III. Whichever ones come on the switch.

I found a pair of mods called Ashes 2063 and its sequel, Ashes: Afterglow. It's a post-apocalyptic scenario in the vein of Mad Max or Fallout, where a nuclear war ended the old world and the new world fucking sucks to live in. You are an anonymous scavenger, or scav, who ekes out a meager living by plundering the ruins of the old world, while struggling against wasteland gangs, cannibalistic mutants, and bizarre monsters with inexplicable powers who want to end you. It's really cool. The maps are well done, though not as psychotically detailed as Hedon, the enemy roster is well rounded and recognizable, and the new guns you're given are quite practical... most of the time. The flamethrower feels a bit clunky, I could never manage to remember to use the pipe bombs, and I never saw a good opportunity to use the sniper rifle. The bike you get, while cool, also feels kind of cumbersome to drive.

I'll admit that I haven't played Afterglow yet, but 2063 is really impressive, though a bit harder than vanilla due to the relative scarcity of ammunition, the presence of radioactive hazards, and the deadliness of the enemies. Seriously, a shotgunner can take thirty hit points off you straight through heavy armour at close range, on easy. So you're relying on not getting hit, and taking them down first. The levels also contain secrets, which tend to be very well hidden, but can contain some really good stuff. Check it out.

I found a WAD called I. H. N. I by means of IcarusLiv3s making a video on it. I've played through it myself, and yeah, it's pretty cool; large, detailed maps making very good use of lightmaps, verticality, 3-d spaces, some custom assets, and very well hidden secrets, some of which require that you go well out of your way to find. It even has something like a running plot: basically, Hell figured out a way to channel an Arch-Vile's power remotely, so all their guys can now come back from the dead. One of the UAC's mad scientists thinks that he can reverse-engineer the process to make humans as immortal as demons, but he's under siege on the Mars base and so needs Doomguy's help to finalize the project... which is kind of a problem, because Doomguy is on Earth. The first episode, which is currently out, features Doomguy storming the UAC facility in order to reach a portal that can take him to Mars - an inversion of the usual plot where he starts on Mars and needs to get to Earth.

The WAD features a custom arsenal, including the old stand-bys: a pistol, a pump shot gun, a super shotgun, a minigun, and a rocket launcher. No plasma gun or BFG in the first episode, sadly. The enemy roster is the usual, no surprises there, except for the WAD's final boss which features a battle against a souped-up cyberdemon using the model of the Doom 3 version. It also makes you squint suspiciously at pre-placed monster corpses since they'll often come back to life at the most inconvenient times. Really cool, though rather difficult due to often-cramped quarters and large crowds of monsters. Check it out.
