The Steep Path Ahead [Familiar of Zero AU]

I get the feeling Karen isn't going to want Louise to ever leave again. That Louise may very well find herself under 24 hour watch in a locked room by a mother who isn't as warm as she imagined but is still very worried about her.

I don't know how she'd act toward Saito, the fact that her missing daughter seems really close to a commoner boy could anger her. Especially if she has become as protective as I imagine.

We might get to see a 'trial' where she would fight Saito and see if his resolve to stay with her daughter is strong enough.

Ok, now that I've got some coffee in me: Mazarin is a fucking idiot.

His rational for hiding Louise is that Karin would have started a war if she'd found Louise in Germania... so instead of using this knowledge to say, move Louise to a Tristain orphanage, or to gain control of Karin again, he fucking sat on it for 17 years. Failing even to do the bare minimum and keep Louise protected; she almost dies in the wilderness and is only being revealed because she made her own way back to Tristain! The fuck is he smoking to claim he planned to reveal her "when the time was right", he didn't do shit to arrange this!

Ya know what makes the crown look even weaker and untrustworthy than an inability to control a mage powerful enough to move fucking mountains? Letting foreign powers repeatedly kick the crown's staunchest supporters in the family jewels without consequence. Ignoring the problem has resulted in the same damn issue where Karin isn't listening to the crown; and worse there is now an obvious and easily exploited weakness in the border guard.

He sold a load of bull to an attention starved orphan he probably kept a close eye to. I am willing to bet he has a much much better explanation ready for Karin.

If he has, then he should've used it with Louise. It stands to reason that topic will come out during Karin-Louise conversation, so it was an excellent opportunity to do some groundwork.

To recover the cardinal should mention that there were compelling reasons for him not to believe his first reports to be genuine.

I'm curious as to how many words he'll get out before she turns his head into a fine mist.

"Karin your daughter is a Void mage. You know what happens to Void mages when they emerge."

Actually, I don't know what happens to Void mages when they emerge. Elaborate?

Branded as heretics for daring to claim they can use the holy element, targeted by elves, being instant contenders for the thrones of any nation of their liking, insta targets for religious fanatics as the reconquista etc.

If you take fannon in to account? Well 6k years and officially there had been no other Void Mages. That makes one wonder if there were and what happened to them.

In short a Void mage is a nuclear bomb both in his/her potential as a mage and as a political tool.

Or hunted and traped in a fate worse than death by the elves. The elf that worked with Joseph mission in Halk was to track void mages and use a poison to make them a vegetable when found them.

And he'd know she was a Void mage how, exactly? She was kidnapped as a baby, it would not be evident until she began learning magic and even then no one would suspect she was a Void mage from explosions.

The Romalian Pope is a Void mage. Mazarin is a nation's Cardinal one of the what? 3? 4? Highest officials of the Church? The entire Brimiric faith and church revolve around the Void element. I think it is safe to assume that the top official of the Church would know what to look for when it comes to Void mages.

How much sense would it make from a cardinal's point of view to sit on a female child that he had even the slightest suspicion and slowly rising certainty that she is a void mage and try to steer her in becoming a nun? Out of sight, out of mind. Or even better close at hand in case he needed a so very valuable pawn.

I am sure the cardinal already knows. After all she told the good father that she had summoned Saito and the cardinal was the favored and preferred candidate to be Pope but he turned it down so Its likely he knows more church secrets than anyone else other than Pope Sidious.
