The Shadow of Old Transgressions (Homeworld/Mass Effect Crossover Quest)

Turn 5.3 The Warchief

The Outlands

System 1240-C
Mobile Base Camp

In order to give them a modicum of privacy Iuno relegates the task of tracking her passengers to her life support sub mind. But when she actually wants to find one it's a matter of moments for her to pull up their location. Warchief Sulaku is in his quarters reading what appears to be a religious text. Or at least that's what Iuno surmises as it's an actual physical scroll and appears to be ancient. She hasn't actually had a chance to scan it yet.

She chimes the door to give Sulaku notice that she wants his attention. He glances up, "Yes, Iuno what is it?"

"You may have noticed that we've arrived at the Taiidan's ship. I've decided it might be best if the first meeting is in the flesh so to speak."

The hulking warchief puts the scroll away with surprisingly delicate care. "I suppose you want me involved then. What about the Praetor?"

"The Kadeshi have been cut off from galactic society for far longer than the Kadesh. I thought you would be the better choice."

Sulaku lets out a bark of laughter, "You want me to intimidate them don't you."

"I am sure they are feeling indignant. The Taiidan have had their way in the galaxy for a long time. They aren't used to being denied. Getting a bit shaken up will be good for them."

The warchief laughs again and starts putting on his armor. "A bunch of unruly varren are they. Well I think I can do that."

He stomps out of his room and heads to his assistants' quarters. He barks a few orders and two of his guards follow him down to the shuttle bay. and heads down to the shuttle bay. The shuttle is actually of Kushan make. Apparently they anticipated the need for at least a little diplomacy on their voyage and had an ambassadorial shuttle already fitted with secure comms and extra armor. By contrast the Kadeshi version is just a regular passenger shuttle. Although that still puts it a league above most civilian shuttles in the galaxy.

Iuno has already contacted the outpost ship and let them know the warchief is coming. So the shuttle swiftly swoops across the gap and enters the hangar. Of course just because it's a Kushan shuttle doesn't mean she hasn't made modifications. It wouldn't do for her passengers to be left without support in an unknown situation.

When the shuttle sets down several Asari and Salarian scientists are waiting and they all take a step back when the shuttles hatch clangs open and Sulaku storms out like an angry god. "Whose in charge here!"

One of the Asari regains her composure, and steps forward, "I am chief scientist Nyava Artero, who are you?"

"My name is Warchief Zraash Sulaku. Holder of the red sands. Uniter of the tribes of Vosh. Wielder of the Blade of Saresh. The Bentusi have named me as their champion in this duel of wills. Tell me Chief Scientist Atero, are you ready to begin!"

While the Sulaku runs roughshod over the scientists Iuno contacts Praetor Nudin. "Praetor, you said you wished to examine the races of the galaxy. We've started negotiations if you wish to watch."

"Of course Iuno, I would do so gladly. After all, wisdom can be found in any situation. If we only care to look."

Iuno backdoors into the outpost ship through the shuttle and then uses its own internal cameras to follow the progress of the warchief as he allows himself to be led to a conference room. She routes the feed to the Praetor's room, and he watches it for a few moments before saying, "What do we know about these scientists."

"Only what the minister has told us. They're archeologists who found a progenitor hulk and wish to study it."

"Well let's see if we can't find out more." Pulling out his omnitool the praetor interfaces with Iuno's systems and then traces his way to the shuttle and then the outpost ship. He begins pulling up log files and examining them while Iuno splits her attention between the conference and reading the logs.

From the two trains of information she finds that the surface is mostly as was stated already. With two major components that the High Minister didn't mention. The first and most important is that this will be the Taiidan's second try to access the hulk.

Apparently the first time they found the hulk they actually came to an agreement with the Bentusi archeologists to research the wreck together. The Bentusi agreed on the condition that the Taiidan not do anything invasive. Which they promptly did by aggressively hacking into the progenitor systems and triggering a security protocol that attempted a self destruct. Fortunately the relevant reactors no longer existed to be overloaded and the hulk only suffered minor damage. Rather understandably the Bentusi were not pleased. Chief Scientist Artero swore it was an accident, and the Bentusi decided not to question her word. They did however kick the Taiidan out of the system.

Between the logs and Sulaku's interrogation of the scientists Iuno is able to come to the conclusion that it was only partially an accident. It certainly wasn't an authorized operation, but one of the scientists on the expedition is the daughter of a high ranking matriarch, and recognized as brilliant in her own right. She apparently tried to make the intrusive hack on her own in order to gain more information. Artero covered for her both because of her political connections, and also because she did actually succeed in pulling out a good amount of data from the progenitor database.

Data which they didn't share Iuno notes with a bit of anger. Unfortunately the Taiidan aren't unaware of the fact that the Bentusi can crack their systems. They've kept the retrieved data on a separate encrypted system in case they can use it as a bargaining chip to get access to the hulk again.

As Iuno is contemplating what to do next she feels the chime of incoming Quantum Waveforms echoing through hyperspace. Fortunately these are not the harsh disjunctions of the wraiths, but the soothing melodies of incoming Bentusi. Something which she confirms as two golden gates open nearby and disgorges Aurora and Laverna.

They quickly join the flotilla network, and Laverna pings her with a greeting, "Hi Iuno, how are things?"

"They're good. Just getting started with the Taiidan. How did things go at the harborship?"

"Well enough. Memnon is finishing repairs on Ulysses, and Valerius is undergoing a thorough decontamination sequence. There shouldn't be any long term damage, but it will be a while before they can rejoin us."

"Well that's a relief. Fortunately we shouldn't need them for this. Though it is complicated. Let me fill you in."

Iuno transmits her findings and the three Bentusi start discussing what they should do about the Taiidan.

[ ] Demand the Data
If the Taiidan want to regain access they're going to have to give up the data they obtained through their experiments. Unfortunately there's no real way to make this demand without letting them know Iuno hacked their ship. Everyone knows it's possible, but the Bentusi like to keep the extent to which they do so quiet.

[ ] Ask for Concessions
Warchief Sulaku is already on the Taiidan outpost ship. It would be perfectly in character for him to make a number of demands on the Taiidan before letting them back into the system. Such as restricting their access to the hulk or demanding some form of recompense.

[ ] Just Escort them to the Progenitor hulk
Of course all of this is only one side of the equation. Iuno and the others need to convince the Bentusi archeologists to allow access as well. It might be a good idea to keep the Taiidan agreeable until they know what the other Bentusi are going to ask for. Plus this way they might be able to get more out of the Asari scientist's unorthodox methods.

Work on the Fleet
[ ] Pick a Research Project.
One of the Bentusi characters can perform research on something for the fleet.
[ ]

[ ] Gravity Pulse Emitters (High Energy): ([ ] [ ])
Using data from the Megalith you have been able to develop a singularity weapon that can be deployed on the battlefield to trap and disrupt enemy vessels. It scales more or less with their engine power. Fighters and corvettes will be crippled. Frigates and Destroyers will be massively slowed. Cruisers and up will simply be somewhat slower. It's a great weapon, but you haven't actually been able to test it. It requires certain exotic materials you only have theoretical knowledge of. In fact the first time you actually saw them used was in the Megalith, and you didn't exactly stop to mine it. So you'd have to find a supply.

[ ] Missile Pods (Logistics): ([ ] [ ])
Most weapons require power from the carrying ship, but missiles are self contained. You could outfit missile launchers to your entire flotilla. The downside is that only Aurora and Laverna could supply themselves. The rest of you would need to return to Aurora to reload. That might be possible to mitigate with resupply drones, but you'd need to put more work into it. Also frankly missiles are fairly lackluster compared to ion cannons. You could also use fusion torpedoes or mines, but they have their own limitations and the same supply issues as the missiles.

[ ] Monomolecular Armor (Metallurgy): ([ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ])
You were very impressed by the monomolecular armor on the Megalith. From your analysis you believe you will need to use some of the exotic matter to squeeze your normal materials into the requisite close bonds and then stabilize them that way. It will be a challenging project covering areas that Bentusi have not looked into before. Which makes it a very exciting avenue of research.

[ ] Passenger Ark (Engineering): ([X] [X] [ ] [ ])
Ever since you have brought aliens into your flotilla the five of you have been bouncing back and forth ideas for providing them a better way to exercise and enjoy recreational activities. These have solidified into a mothership class ship fitted with parks, hangars, a Bentusi class jump drive, and sufficient space for thousands of crew. Right now it's just a thought exercise, but you could change that.

[ ] Design Drone Core (Sociology): ([ ] [ ])
You have a number of potential designs that the Bentusi have never felt the need to build drone cores for. You can perform the design and analysis of a virtual intelligence capable of piloting these ships.
-[ ] Pick a non Drone Design

[ ] Optimize Schematic (Engineering): ([ ] [ ])
You have a number of designs on file that are either fron Non Bentusi races or were designed from scratch and have flaws to put it mildly. Take some time to go over them and fix mistakes and redundancies as well as incorporate Bentusi technology if necessary.
-[ ] Pick a jury rigged or non Bentusi Design

[ ] Involve your Flicker Friends (???): ([X] [ ])
Ask the Kadeshi and Kushan what sort of engineering tricks they can bring to bear on the problems that the flotilla faces. Bentusi might have the best technology, but you aren't blind to the fact that approaching an idea from a different angle might come up with some innovative solutions.

[ ] Repair Drone (Engineering): ([ ] [ ])
It would be a good idea to produce a drone that could autonomously repair your vessels. Unfortunately there is a lower limit on the size you can cram the necessary modules in, but you ought to be able to develop a drone frigate that could do the job.

[ ] Improve Themselves (Special): ([ ])
Each member of the flotilla has things they would like to improve about their bodies. Rather than approach this in an ad hoc manner let them make their designs and then run the schematics past the whole group for discussion and revision of any possible design flaws.

[ ] Hack the Bentusi Archives for a Cruiser schematic(Special): ([ ] [ ] [ ])
The problem here is that you've gone way out of the parameters of your original mission. Most Bentusi in your position would be expected to head back to the shielded nebulae and report to the elders not take it on themselves to rally the flicker races. And they definitely wouldn't be given access to the ancient Bentusi military cruisers. You're going to have to hack into your restricted archives and take whatever you can find.

Pick a Codex/Interlude
[ ] Write In
Pick something you'd like to know more about.

Quest Note: I'm trying another experiment. I've noticed from the other quests I'm running that having more choices and especially ones that can be planned for over multiple updates both gets more discussion, and makes it easier for me to write by giving me more prompts to work with.

So from now on each update will allow you to pick one research project to work on, and also one thing you want to know more about. This can be a codex entry on some aspect of the setting, or an interlude from the perspective of another character somewhere to see what's going on with the rest of the galaxy.

Probably want to finish up the 'Mothership' scale design, give the fleet a mobile harbor that they can use as a repair/refit (Even if it isn't up to capital scale given its focused on being a passenger vessel) and either finishing the Flicker Friends project or refining our bomber design (Or maybe offering up a optimization pass on one of our flicker friends ships? would be interesting how their ships stack up after getting a pass over.)

[ ] Ask for Concessions
[ ] Aurora (Logistics)
-[ ] Project: Missile Pods (Logistics): ([ ] [ ])

Our last big fight ended up with missile spam, shields and superior C3 (command, control, communications) being our biggest strengths. So let's push further into one of those. I am tempted by the Gravity Pulse Emitters, but It's rather something useful now.

Hmmm...

I'd love to begin optimizing either the Raawan or Marduk and give them a Bentusi tune-up, but that should probably wait until the passenger ark is complete so the flicker friend crewmembers have plenty of room and aren't packed in like sardines. Likewise, I personally am ruling out having Iuno work on drone cores - as much as I'd love to have more drone frigates to play with, I feel like the current situation is one where she should remain fully focused on.

[X] Improve Themselves (Special): ([Aurora])

Honestly, for me its a toss-up between Aurora improving her carrier hull, and Aurora finishing off that bombardment ship design, but carrier improvements feels like the 'bigger picture' choice for me, given Aurora's importance as a strategic asset when it comes to keeping the ships of our flotilla fully functional.

[X] Ask for Concessions - Imply that the Bentusi have little tolerance for their past deception and that their behavior will have repercussions for future Bentusi-Taiidan interactions.

The warchief already has these researchers on the backfoot and not only have they just tried to get one over on us, they're trying to cover up how a member of their research team violated an agreement with the Bentusi that came before us. That just smacks of disrespect and arrogance, and deserves to be appropriately responded to. If you try to play with the big kids, you better be ready to get a little roughed up. I think these Taiidan are overdue for a reminder as to just why you shouldn't annoy an Elder Race, and I'm pretty sure that Sulaku won't mind playing along. Lucky for these researchers that this is a Homeworld crossover and not a Stellaris one, eh?

[X] Vagyr Tribes - History

I gotta admit, as much as I feel personally like the Vagyr are more trouble than they're worth, that's 100% my own personal point of view at work despite being well aware that, this quest being a fusion, these Vagyr are different in some ways. So I'm curious as to just what those differences are.

Hmm, we actually don't have a consensus on the research project. I thought we did because everyone picked Aurora, but you have her doing different things. I'll give it a few more hours for someone to make a tiebreaker vote, and then roll for it.

Probably just going to get the Vaygr codex up today though. I'm going to have to put a good bit of effort into working out an appropriate fusion history.

Codex: The Vaygr Crusade
The Vaygr Crusade
The Batarian Tribes are a prime example of being both unlucky and too arrogant for their own good. They are an old civilization. Not as old as the Bentusi, the Keepers, or the Kadeshi, but far older than most of the society races that make up the current galaxy, and especially older than the Taiidan. Something which chafes them terribly. For the Vaygr have a history much like the Bentusi. In another life they might have been the ones to unite the galaxy in a Pax Vaygr instead of the Pax Bentusi. And it would have been a far far harsher life under their rule.

For more than eight millennia the Batarian Tribes have roamed the stars. However unlike the peaceful Unbound trading clans the Batarians were a terrible force. They crossed void in their massive sublight arks forming massive crusade fleets, and when they arrived in some poor isolated system they released millions of zealous crusaders from cryosleep to man small inter system warships. Like a locust swarm they descended on their victims taking everything of value. Slaves, resources, art, technology; anything which they could use was plundered and taken back aboard their arks. For decades the crusade fleet would ravage a system hunting down survivors and taking everything easily mined or stolen. Then once they had gotten to the point where it would actually require work on their part to continue resource extraction the Batarians packed themselves back into cryosleep and launched their arks back across the void towards another innocent world.

Usually survivors were deliberately left behind with just enough technology that in a century or two they would once again be a rich world ripe for conquest. But not so much that would actually be a threat. The few times that a crusade was actually beaten off by a watchful civilization they called together a grand conclave, and a century or two later when the original defenders were all dead a vast crusade of thousands of arks would descend on the system to punish them for the crime of daring to stand up to the Vaygr.

This situation continued for thousands of years. And the Batarian Tribes grew fat and happy off their plundered riches, but though they didn't know it the regions of the outer rim that they plundered were lacking one critical element. For the Progenitors had touched the area only lightly. Their wreckage was sparse and of little consequence. The hulks that the Batarians found were dismissed as relics and curiosities not worth looking into further. And that dismissal cost the Batarians dearly.

For eventually the Bentusi arrived in their great harborships and sentinel fleets. They had not come for any sort of vengeance, for the worlds of the outer rim had never been on their trading routes and they knew little of the Batarian Tribes. But once they heard the plaintive tales of the Plunder Worlds they would not let the situation stand. Bentus called a great crusade of their own and began to scour the void for the Arks even as they traded short jump drives with the natives.

This was a crushing blow to the Batarians. Their arks in the void were small and silent compared to the vast reaches. Hard to find even for advanced Bentusi sensors, but when they were found their sleeping crews were defenseless before the righteous anger of the Bentusi searchers. And when they arrived at their target worlds they fared little better. Their once defenseless slaves now had ships that could out run them with ease and call for help from the relentless Bentusi fleets. One by one the Vaygr crusades were hunted down and destroyed.

But despite it all this wasn't the end for them. They had been voyaging for so very long that thousands of crusade fleets still cruised the interstellar void unaware of what was occurring in their empire while they lay dreaming. And not every crusade fleet that encountered a plunder world was eradicated to the last. The Vaygr tribe in particular got lucky. They managed to defeat the local forces and salvage their short jump drives before the Bentusi arrived. Using their retrofitted ships the Vaygr scattered to the void and sought out their still sleeping kin. They did not help them, for the Batarians were just as bad to each other as they were to the other races. Instead they used their newfound power to subordinate every other tribe to themselves. And slowly the Batarian Tribes were whittled down until all that was left was the Vaygr Crusade.

Their hyperdrives were reverse engineered version of deliberatly low power trade drives the Bentusi had given away, and thus they were pitiful compared to Bentusi ships. But there were many many Vaygr fleets now, and they scattered to all the hidden corners of the outer rim. It would be the work of millennia to find and eradicate all of their crusade fleets. And the work was still ongoing when the night of knives overthrew the Pax Bentusi. As the Bentusi put aside their role of peacekeeper they informed the new Galactic Council of the threat. They told them of the many Vaygr fleets that still cruised in the eternal night. And to their credit the council helped the Plunder Worlds. But only for a time. Most of the flicker races did not have the Bentusi's long perspective. The Taiidan Empire kept up its commitments the longest. For the long lived Asari and Krogan remembered the warnings and knew that the Vaygr might go centuries between attacks. Centuries that they would live to see.

But then the Taiidan Empire split and the Hiigarran war began. In the aftermath the Higarrans were exiled and the Asari a minority in the empire and subordinate to the new Turian emperor. And with the galactic races distracted the Vaygr struck. With their hyperdrive technology their fleets swarmed across the outer rim systems. Countless worlds fell as the Vaygr resumed their path of conquest and plunder. It was not the same as before however. Their previous vassals had formed pacts and defensive alliances. They fought the Vaygr and they called for backup. It did not always arrive, but occasionally Taidan fleets would answer the call to battle the Vaygr crusaders and occasionally they would make the mistake of attacking a Bentusi Exchange. For with the hyperdrives the Vaygr used their cryosleep arks less and less, and gradually succumbed to the short memories of flicker races.

As the years passed and the stars continued their slow march around the galactic core the situation ebbed and flowed. Warchiefs would arise among the Vaygr uniting them into grand crusades that rolled across the outer rim conquering hundreds of star system. Then the continued cries for help would become too much, or the Vaygr would venture to far inward and arouse the Taiidan Republic to send its many fleets to crush the Vaygr menace "Once and for All!" They would scour the outer rim for Vaygr and destroy countless crusade ships, but the Vaygr would retreat and for a time be just another slightly larger than normal band of pirates in the outer rim. The Taiidan would forget. They would pull their fleets back to more urgent matters. The Vaygr would slowly begin encroaching on the their old victims once more. Their crusades would grow larger and larger until a new warchief rose to power. And the cycle would begin again.

It hasn't always been a violent relationship. Some warchiefs are more diplomatic than others. Some just want a more permanent power base. They have made overtures to the galactic council. Even occasionally gotten a seat on the council itself. They are after all a powerful civilization in their own right. But as tyrannical and authoritarian as the council races can be the Vaygr are worse. They insist on taking slaves as their cultural right and practice a fierce form of species superiority in which the Vaygr are at the top and everything else exists to serve them. Even other Batarians are below the Vaygr much less other races, and their disdain is shown in all their interactions. It was usually no more than a decade or two before one side or the other could no longer stand it and the Vaygr would either leave in disgust or be thrown out of the council for repeated infractions.

The most recent incident was not too long ago even by the standards of the flicker races. Only two decades ago the Vaygr embassy was withdrawn from the Grand Conclave when the rest of the council refused to help them with the losses they kept taking by provoking Bentusi Exchanges.

Turn 5.4 Concessions

The Outlands

System 1240-C
Mobile Base Camp

After some discussion Iuno, Laverna, and Aurora decide to ask for concessions from the Taiidan scientists for their fumbling attempts to access the progenitor systems. Fortunately this shouldn't be too difficult. There are times that the Bentusi's reputation for being an enigmatic race comes in quite handy.

While Warchief Sulaku is busy grilling Artero Iuno takes control of the room's intercom, "Thank you Warchief. Young Artero, we have considered your missteps and believe that compensation for damage to the relic is in order. The resources you collect have some modicum of value. We will take them. As well we require one standard data cube of data on Progenitor that you have found in other explorations. In exchange we will offer you a second chance."

"We will let you examine the wreck once again. But we will be watching. A second accident will not be tolerated."

Chief Scientist Artero begins blustering, but Iuno stands firm in her demands. Mostly that is. She implies that the concessions are less about resources and more about punishment, and she knows that for a scientist transferring their research before they are ready to go public is extremely painful. So she emphasizes that aspect of the concession. And then magnanimously accepts when Artero grits her teeth and offers the outposts full resource storage if they can exchange data that is of less importance instead.

Laverna congratulates Iuno over the flotilla network, "Nice." For while the races of the galaxy see the Bentusi as wise elders dispensing cryptic advice and philosophy the Bentusi see themselves as traders. Artero will come out of this thinking she was taught an indirect lesson on the value of research and maintaining ethical standards. But really the Taiidan just paid Iuno 5,000 RUs for something she was planning to do anyway. After all, the entire reason the flotilla was here was to get the scientists access to the progenitor hulk again.

Preparations are made to get underway and jump to the system where the hulk resides. Hyperdrive cores are linked and Laverna provides a quantum gate algorithm that will compensate for the Taiidan's inferior short jump core. Warchief Sulaku switches out with Praetor Vell. Now that the scientists have been chastised Iuno has gone for a less intimidating approach to keep them occupied while she deals with the other Bentusi. And most importantly Aurora sends a shuttle with an Exchange Unit to the Taiidan ship and siphons their resource tank into her own stores.

"This will be an excellent replacement for what we spent at Irune. I think you'll like what I've come up with too. The missiles were fairly effective against the Wraiths so I spent the time on our way here working out a good solution to let us all launch them. We should have more than enough to outfit all of us."

Aurora passes out schematics for missile pods she's customized for each flotilla member. The main missile racks are actually for bombardment. Instead they feature a number of anti fighter missiles with powerful fusion warheads for dealing with Wraith interceptors. However they aren't the only thing Aurora has included.

Given how well the bombardment missiles worked against the wraiths she has also included a second pod of three bombardment missiles for each flotilla member. And not just regular kind either. She has refined the design to use a cluster of submunitions on the final approach in order to bracket the wraith carriers and prevent them from slipping away.

Of course the problem with both missile pods is that no one but Aurora and Laverna can actually resupply them. Currently the flotilla hasn't developed a flash forging process for either the intercept missiles or the Bombardment V2 missiles. So Aurora and Laverna will have to fabricate each replacement manually.

Obviously this isn't an adequate solution and Aurora is already thinking of making a missile collier drone ship to resupply the flotilla. The other option would be to make individual fabrication pods for each flotilla member, and unfortunately that would start to cut into their other capabilities.

All that's a matter for later however. For now the flotilla, plus one chastised Taiidan ship, disappears in a flurry of golden and blue gates as they make their jump to the next system.

Once they translate back out of their quantum waveforms they find themselves in one of the systems characteristic of Progenitor works. The planets here have been clearly moved in their orbits, and a vast halo of debris surrounds the star. The broken remnants of one of the progenitor's enormous stations. Even scattered and broken the remnants dwarf the ships of the flotilla. Seeing systems like this is always both humbling and awe inspiring. For all that the Bentusi think of themselves as an old and knowledgeable race they have yet to reach even a fraction of the Progenitor's heights.

As the flotilla escorts the Taiidan base ship towards the location of the most intact progenitor hulk they start to read a trio of Bentusi signatures. A squat domed ship is sending a handshake protocol identifying it as being Cassian. Aurora recognizes him as currently wearing the next evolution of her own hull. A mason class tender with modifications for salvage work. A good choice for examining a progenitor relic. His companion identifies herself as Tatiana in a spherical hull that seems to be a rare botanist class science vessel. An unusual choice, for as the name suggests that class is more typically used for when the Bentusi are making their rare examinations of life bearing planets. The third vessel however is a welcome surprise. It's not a stranger at all, but Ulysses finally up and about.

"Ulysses, you're back! How are you feeling?" Laverna is the first to respond as the Bentusi vessels move into communications range. Iuno and Aurora also ping their interest.

"Better than ever. Memnon got me back to a 110%. I'm just ashamed I wasn't able to help out in your last fight."

"It wasn't your fault. And Valerius said you saved his life fighting those carriers."

"Maybe, but I could have done it without sacrificing myself. I'll have to be better. I can't let that happen again. But in the meantime Valerius filled me in on what we're trying to do here. So I came to talk with Cassian and Tatiana about the Taiidan."

"Hello." "Hi," the two other Bentusi chime in. Cassian speaks first, "I'm not too happy about this. The Taiidan have no idea what to do with Progenitor relics. They just brute force electrons across every relay and see what happens."

"Now Cassian, I'm sure we can keep an eye on them this time. And I am eager to work with them again."

"You just want to study them. We agreed. This decade would be spent on progenitor research."

"We can do both!"

Iuno gets the feeling this is an old argument between the pair, and decides to intervene before they get going and forget everyone else is there.

"I've already been working on their chief scientist. She knows we're going to be watching them. And I think she'll keep an eye on the rest of her team."

She considers what else she can offer the pair.

[ ] Resources
The simplest solution. Most Bentusi won't turn down RUs when offered. She can split the compensation from the Taiidan with Cassian and Tatiana.

[ ] Time
The Flotilla can stay for a while and help keep an eye on the scientists. This will let the pair of archeologists continue their work more or less in peace. And Iuno wouldn't mind staying to chat with the scientists, but it would delay the flotilla's main mission.

[ ] Knowledge
The Taiidan still have their final card to play in the data they obtained with their ill fated experiments on the hulk. The notes Iuno has been able to read imply that it's fairly important. Or at least they think so. She's pretty sure it would be enough to convince Cassian to go along with it. But she's going to have to word her arguments very carefully to avoid a diplomatic incident when she gets the Taiidan to give access to the data.

[ ] Design a Collier Ship (Logistics): ([ ] [ ] [ ])
The flotilla has a lot of ships using missiles now. And those missiles are becoming ever more complex. It would be a good idea to build a fast armored ship that can safely transfer large quantities of missiles between ships without risking catastrophic damage.

The simplest solution. Most Bentusi won't turn down RUs when offered. She can split the compensation from the Taiidan with Cassian and Tatiana.

Hmmm... I'm inclined to think that we should stick around for a bit and help keep an eye on these Taiidan for a little bit, just in case someone on their team does something stupid gets another clever idea and ends up waking up a small fleet of very angry Progenitor Movers or some such unpleasantness. After all, at least one member of their team thinks they're more clever than a Bentusi. I'll be honest, most times I'm entirely for letting such a person bite off more than they can chew and letting them choke on their hubris a little bit, but in this case, such a scenario would also potentially endanger Cassian and Tatania.

I know, I know, your typical Bentusi isn't exactly what you'd call defenseless, but I don't consider just Acolyte drones to be an adequate defensive measure despite now nasty those little things are, especially given recent circumstances. And since I don't see a point in bending these Taiidan scientists over a barrel yet about their hidden data...

After all, it's Progenitor debris. There's gonna be something juicy in there by default.

Edit: Ya know what? Our flicker friends are going to be the ones living on the Passenger Ark. Maybe they should have a say in how it turns out.

[X] Codex: Drone Cores

I can get behind this 100%. It's a fascinating example of OC technology and I wouldn't mind learning more about it.
