The Restless Dead Want YOU To Fight Necromancy

I'd really prefer to keep talking to Lisa, since she's turned out to be as cool as I thought she might, but we gotta be responsible and polite and talk to the actual residents of the house we own and junk. :V

So, I'm thinking these are probably our most immediate concerns:

[X] Invite Mr. Henderson to stop lurking in his hallway.
-[X] Talk to him about staying in the house.
--[X] Request Lisa spend the night in a guest room.
-[X] Ask him about your ritual room.

The other questions are pertinent, but I'm leery of voting for everything; could make it hard for the conversation to flow naturally. Our money is probably fine, anyway, given the well-kept condition of the house, and Mr. Henderson probably isn't clued on the supernatural given the state of the ritual room and his wariness about the family vampire coming back. That's not certain by any means, but enough implied to not be immediate priorities.

As for the other option, I'll try this write-in, I think. I feel like she should go to the hospital, but given how active she is, she's probably fine until the morning. I bet she could use a night to process all of this, anyway. Also offering her a way out of this mess if she seems to want it, too, even though I doubt she does; she seems to have let down her guard enough to be curious more than anything.

[X] Offer her a guest room for the night.
-[X] Just for the night.
-[X] She should go to the hospital tomorrow morning for swiftest recovery, she lost a lot of blood. You can get someone to drive her.
-[X] Help send her home if she seems reluctant or uncomfortable about this whole thing.

That's certainly a way to look at it, but I also think that if the guy's more comfortable listening from the shadows than confronting us we should give him the opportunity.

Letting him assess us from a distance rather than calling him out into a direct confrontation? Eh, yeah, I could see that, and it's reasonable enough if we just want to get her to a hospital (and aren't actually expecting him to do it). Mainly I just think it's kind of rude to offer her a room for the night without setting things straight with the current residents first (since that's the option I'm currently leaning toward), though it's also more likely he'll rationalize us away as a pair of lunatics if he's left to his own devices while we keep talking about the supernatural.

I like this, getting a real Dark Shadows vibe.

I like the idea of making it clear up-front that you are friendly but also that secrets from you are pointless. I mean, that's not exactly true, but.

Also, the "oh by the way I know you are there" move is always fun.

"I think I heard him come in, actually. Henderson?"

He shuffles into the room, stiff as a board. In person, Bob Henderson is a stout, middle-aged black man with close-cropped hair, broad shoulders, glasses, and a tweed suit jacket. Not your type, but probably handsome in his youth.

"Good evening," he says, gaze flickering between you and Lisa.

He isn't sure which of you is the vampire. Hah.

You stand, and hold out a hand.

"Morgan Williams. Friend of the family."

"…Morgan. I'm the executor of your family's trust. Robert Henderson."

If it sounds like you're both reading from a script, it's because you are. You set up contingencies.

"Mr. Henderson. I very much look forward to working with you."

He does not invite you to call him Bob. Some work to do, there. He's going to get a neck cramp if he keeps being this tense.

"And this is…?" he looks over your shoulder at Lisa. You glance back at her. She's watching the show with the resigned fascination of someone whose worldview has been upended. You recognize the look.

"Lisa. She helped me find my way home." You're a big believer in technical truths. "She needs dinner and a room for the night."

"I don't think I could eat," she interjects. "And you can call me a cab, thanks."

You glance at the shape of her thoughts. Still that burning curiosity.

"Stay the night, and someone can drive you to the hospital in the morning. You should see a doctor." You pause. "I'll show you magic."

While she's thinking about that, you remember your manners, and smile broadly at Henderson.

"With your permission?"

Why's he anxious now? Oh, fangs. Oops.

"That's. Fine."

"Have you eaten dinner yet?" you ask him.

"I was going to order pizza."

You nod.

"We'll talk once you're settled."

He steps into another room to call the delivery place. Lisa seems to want to be left alone with her own thoughts, so you turn the TV's volume back up to low and switch channels, looking for news. The new president isn't doing much for the economy sliding into recession. Everyone thinks the 'dot com bubble' is bursting. The weather is going to be warm, with scattered rain showers. People are debating whether or not humans have ruined the environment forever. They probably haven't, there are enough immortals around to head off that sort of thing. You should probably check with someone when you have a free moment, though, your fellow vampires aren't the most responsible people you've ever met. That dryad probably still lives in Thompson Park.

Nothing in the news about necromancers or the dead rising. It was a long shot anyway.

Lisa's breathing shifted, and you hurriedly focused on her pulse. She was fine. She was fine, but she was falling asleep. Natural, without the stimulation of conversation to keep her engaged. Don't panic, Morgan.

You almost move to carry her upstairs yourself before remembering that would be abysmally stupid. Henderson gives you a wary look when you ask him to help her upstairs to bed, but he does it anyway. Lisa is tucked into one of the third-floor guest beds, and you accompany Henderson quietly back down the stairs to his/your study.

The door clicks closed.

"Surprise?" you offer.

He snorts. Nearly a laugh, good job, Morgan.

"I have some things for you," he says, grabbing a set of leather-bound folders and an envelope from a bookshelf next to a model ship. He hands you the envelope first.

"House keys. It's just me and Kathy staying here right now, but my son and ex-wife visit. Here's your documentation."

The first folder ends up in your hands, and you flip it open to find a series of papers, the top of which is a diploma from a university in Germany made out to Insert-Name-Here.

"You went to boarding school in Switzerland and university in Germany, and you've just moved back to the United States, which will explain a lack of familiarity with modern culture. Speak your name and preferred age and the documents will update themselves, he said."

He?

Henderson continued, handing you a second folder, "Here's the report on the trust. To say things have been going well is a – ahem – charming understatement, but your accountant wants you to call him. Fifty years ago. He calls once a year to inquire about your health."

Your accountant is terrifying. You do, however, wish you could get a word in edgewise.

"And here's the folder with local contact numbers, notes about the house improvements, and historical developments."

You don't have enough hands for this. You put it all down on the desk, and touch his wrist lightly before he can hand you anything else.

"Henderson? Breathe. Also, thank you, this is wonderful. I don't suppose you know where my things from the room in the basement ended up?"

He frowns, and steps back a pace. You turn away and examine a bookcase. Don't tempt yourself, Morgan. Mostly books on economics, interesting. He's the author of a good number of them.

"I think there's a box in the attic. It got packed up."

Much better than nothing. Much better. You can work with this.

It's not even 9 o'clock in the evening yet, you have the whole night ahead of you. You still very much want to track down that necromancer, but you're not certain if that's you or the psychic impression he left. You want to eat at least once or twice more today, you're still recovering from starvation. Sunrise is at 6 tomorrow morning, so you can plan for nine and a half hours.

Why are "animals" and "animal blood" are separate there, and yet no separation for "humans" and "human blood"? Speaking of which, I don't think it's actually come up yet: can we drink "cold" blood, like from a blood bag?

Good question! You can drink human blood from a bag, but you do not have such a deep understanding of modern medicine that drinking blood bags will occur to you on your own. You'd like it better than animal blood but worse than fresh human blood.

One of the humans is likely to suggest it if you pick related dialogue options.

You started your nap around 1899 and skipped to 2001, so you literally missed the 20th century, including blood types and all non-direct transfusion options. Lisa's subconscious knows a lot about information technology and is deeply uninterested in biology. You know about the discovery of DNA, but Lisa thinks biology is squishy and super gross.

Who does Morgan kill? (Vote for as many as you like.)
[X]No one

This plan takes 8 and a half hours, leaving one hour for emergencies or just a safe time before sunrise. We get to know people and see what's around (and I hope trigger some random encounters). As for the blood, I don't see why Morgan can't pay people to eat, he's rich.

P.S. "Who does Morgan kill?" makes me really uncomfortable though. Will we be able to change it for special cases?

The ethics questions are basically goals & background feelings - you'll still control tactics from moment to moment, this is about how Morgan feels about it. For instance, if Morgan doesn't like killing anyone, if Morgan has to in self defense or kills someone by accident, Morgan will be a sad vampire.

Tell us honestly. Did you set the year to 1899 so that Morgan had time to read the Dracula book? It's 1897 if I recall correctly.

Happy coincidence. I went looking for a house to model Morgan's house on and an old town map to use for Morgan's memories and ended up with a house built in 1892. Morgan grumbles about missing the 20th century and has read Dracula, so that puts Morgan's Unfortunate Vampire Hunter Problem between 1897 and 1899.

Yes, Morgan only got to enjoy their fancy house for 5-7 years.

Eight and a half hours, for some wiggle room. (I promise I was already considering only doing eight and a half hours before Varder did it. :V)

Guy's clearly uncomfortable with us, so I don't think it makes sense for us to ask him for people-related drinks just yet. Not sure if we should go to dinner with him, either. Maybe inserting ourselves will help him relax as he realizes we aren't going to eat him or his family, maybe intruding will just make him raise his hackles even more. Hard to say, but I'll err on the side of not leaving him to stew in wariness for now. Other than that, I'd rather set up our ritual space properly than go on a very extended walk. We've relaxed enough for now; let's get stuff in order.

[X] Human blood, outside of emergencies.
-[X] From companions, lovers, and friends
-[] From strangers

Morgan's expressed too strong a preference for human blood to suddenly become a vegetarian out of nowhere. Besides, I don't see how it's any kind of issue if we ask permission and normally have enough control that accidentally killing someone is impossible. It's not like we're taking something that's not easily replenished, given some time, rest, and a diet high in iron. Discretion dictates that we should probably stick to people we know well as an ideal, though.

(Also, too much of my image of vampires comes from Masquerade and Requiem for me to be entirely comfortable with taking blood from strangers, though that's an entirely personal bias.)

[X] No one
[] Enemies
[] Criminals
[] The ill and elderly
[] Street people and others that will be overlooked

I'm pretty iffy on killing anyone by default and will vote to kill no one (unless someone convinces me otherwise with a really juicy concept), but Morgan is more on the lawful decent or possibly pragmatic decent side of the alignment scale so far, so I may as well keep an open mind and assess every option.

Enemies and criminals are certainly the least morally objectionable of the lot, though that can come to bite us in the butt unless they're all extremely petty and trivial. Enemies and criminals are not self-contained obstacles that exist only to be a thorn in our side (or society's side), after all; they can still have people who care enough to look into their deaths. Pragmatically, the ill, the elderly, and the marginalized will be the least missed, for various reasons, even if it's not exactly a dietary plan that makes Morgan sympathetic. Beyond that and the trail of murders starts becoming irresponsible no matter how discrete you are, not to mention it doesn't really line up with the character we've made so far.

Your plan seems to take 10+ hours? I think you included the dinner option by mistake.

Yeah, sorry, I realized at the last second that I'd left most of the walking hours in there when I only wanted one. Left that for last since I had no idea which one I might want over the others, then forgot about it.

i was hoping no one would notice that quickly :V

Kill: No one

"Can you show me? I'd like to go through things tonight, if it's no trouble."

He leads the way upstairs.

"So, what are your plans?"

What are your plans. Find a necromancer. Avoid vampire hunters.

"I'll probably find a few concerts to go to. Maybe catch a movie."

He glances your way.

"Have you…."

"Mm?"

He leads the way into one of the attic rooms that's been entirely taken over by mortal knickknacks. There appears to be a pile of broken suitcases. Why would you not just throw them away.

"When did you wake up?"

Oh, you were using modern phrasing.

"Just tonight."

"Well. Here it is." He tugs a seaman's chest out from under a pile of other chests, and you pick it up and balance it on your shoulder, before gesturing him to proceed you.

The silence is awkward, and you're not really sure how to break it. You end up heading down to the ritual room without another word. Sleeping for a century and a gnawing desire to rip his throat out doesn't make you a good conversationalist. You leave the chest there. You're going to do something about this awkwardness now, before it festers. With that in mind, you indulge yourself in a little solitude while keeping an ear out for Kathy getting home.

Solitude is wonderful. You draw a hot bath while you sort through your things for something acceptable to wear to dinner.

~~~
Half an hour later, you head downstairs. Kathy and her father are in the family room, just about to start dinner. You are wearing a formal jacket over a silver vest, and have washed and brushed your hair. You even found a hairclip, and shoes. Hopefully looking less like a savage will make a better impression.
Kathy is a pretty black teenager with frizzy hair in a high tail. She does a doubletake, then smiles.
"Hi – are you one of dad's students?"
You smile back.
"No. I'm Morgan, nice to meet you. Kathy, right?"
Kathy's smile fades.
"Dad, you're bringing girls around now? She's like half your age."
That is wrong on multiple levels and you are not sure you have the energy to correct more people about your gender tonight.
"This is Morgan Williams," her father interjects. "Like the Williams trust? Morgan asked to stay for a while, since… well. I said that was fine."
Kathy makes a face.
"Really, dad?"
"Be polite. Morgan's been in Europe, jet lag is killer."
It appears Henderson would prefer his daughter not know you're a vampire.
