The Restless Dead Want YOU To Fight Necromancy

I feel like people are seriously undervaluing how huge a threat any level of mind reading is. One of the only things every single human person in the world has, uses, and values is the privacy inside their own heads. Admitting to being able to breach that sanctuary at any level is asking for trouble. Especially to the official representative of a government interested in surveillance and facing an existential threat.

True, but if we lie and it comes out later that looks really bad. And we might well slip up again.

Plus... enemies possibly may have written down Morgan's powers.

I suggest "Abend" for our subconscious. It's the opposite of Morgen.

She holds out a hand and you shake it. She about takes your hand off, her grip is that fierce.
Note to self, don't challenge her to arm wrestle... would likely pull our hand off before anyone wins.

Okay, very serious question, folks: do you want to name your fictional artificial gestalt subconscious?

To be clear, the write-in was "creation of an artificial subconscious" which is true and has been very useful. Morgan doesn't need to say that it's a gestalt, and shouldn't: the point to this vote was to avoid lying by giving a partial truth. They are going to tell the truth: they can read strong surface thoughts, and they used their power to make a fake subconscious that knows pop culture even though they don't understand the context.

That said, I want to call Morgan's actual ability-to-understand-pop-culture "Carl". After Carl Jung and the collective unconcious.

And Morgan's understanding of pop culture does require an explanation, so mentioning that it's magical in this context seems like a good way to do so. Morgan is never going to succeed at pretending they're not creepy. They slip up too often. They are going to have to settle for downplaying their creepiness instead. <.<

I like Carl Jung as inspiration for our collective unconscious. Also, "a little creepy but benign and well-meaning" is exactly the sort of person you ally with. Maybe not allow them full access into your home, but definitely someone to agree to mutual defense.

"Ah – no, I'm sorry. One of my talents is awareness of the surface thoughts of others. Marj thinks of you as Nina."

"I… see."

"I end up with a collection of popular culture facts. Like Pippin – it's a band, I understand?"

"It's a musical. I haven't seen it. You don't control it?"

"Not unless I concentrate."

"Oh."

You credit her exhaustion for helping her accept this.

"I feel like I should stick around," she says.

"Unless you have further thoughts about where the best place for me to set up a building warded against zombies is, we're about done here."

"Selfishly, I'd say here? If we were closer to the front, I'd say one of the evacuation zones, but up here we're all 'sheltering in place.' The police are already set up here. Can you do more than one?"

"It depends on my food supply, really, and what else comes up. Magic requires power."

"If you had as much to eat as you could manage?"

"I could do as much magic as I wanted," you confirm. "But it wouldn't be good for my personality. Magic is enervating."

"Addictive?"

"Oh, very, but much the way having a… a cell phone is. It's always handy."

"Why do I think that was one of your pop culture facts?" she asks suspiciously. "Did you get that from me?"

"Not you, no. A nice young woman I met the other night with very strong opinions about technology."

"Riiight. If you're 'warding' the building, can I record that, too?"

[] "Yes, you can record me warding the building. I'll meet you out front in a few minutes."
[] "Yes, you can record me warding the building. I'm going to have to do some research and come back, to target the ward appropriately. I wouldn't want to exclude anyone except the zombies."
[] "No, I'd rather you didn't record this spell."

[x] "No, I'd rather you didn't record this spell."

I'm pretty sure this is rather valuable as a ward that could be tuned and used against us and as something rare.

[X] "Yes, you can record me warding the building. I'm going to have to do some research and come back, to target the ward appropriately. I wouldn't want to exclude anyone except the zombies."

Specifically, I don't want Morgan to exclude themselves. Which the default ward against undead will do, for anyone who missed that. <.<

My feeling on recording remains "it's the zombie apocalypse and saving the human race is more important than Morgan's secrets." Yes, having people learn a ward against zombies and then tailor it back to a ward against undead might cause trouble for us later. Having a rapidly diminishing supply of humans is going to cause problems for us much sooner, though.

i can't think of any reason at all why we would just freely hand out magic knowledge all of a sudden.

Yes, I'm sure we'll eventually have cause to regret this, even with taking the time to improve the targeting. I'm equally sure that if we don't do this, we'll also have cause to regret it - and that second regret will come with a higher body count.

There's a time to hoard secrets, and a time to show off what you can do. This is, I feel, still the latter.

Also, having a second stronghold besides our home would be useful, and this is the only (non-write-in) option that gets us that extra discrimination on the wards.
...I assume there's some reason we can't just replicate our home's warding scheme here? That seems to keep the zombies out while letting us through just fine.

Mostly a matter of ritual speed, difficulty, and amount of power required for initial setup. The house is protected by an 8-year ward anchored by enchantment, which took a month to set up. The ritual Morgan's thinking of takes a couple hours total, and then you just have to have someone recharge it once a week.

-[X] It would be rather ill suited of me if I prevented zombie victims from finding sanctuary here.
