The Prices We Pay

Before everyone hops on the fire bandwagon, what are we doing with it? Are we reigniting the bonfire in an attempt to distract or scare the thing? Are we grabbing a branch, lighting it and waving it at the thing? We should think a little bit more on the how and why of what we are doing lest we start a forest fire and burn down the town on accident.

Yes?

The bonfire being re-ignited is a pre-requisite for any plan involving fire, if there are branches nearby it wouldn't hurt to have directable fire too and is also kind of an obvious act to defend yourself from something you know fears fire.

Distraction is the selected action though, we shouldn't be chasing it into the woods, at the moment we are on top of a cleared hill so one of the least likely locations for unintended spreading of fire, likely why funeral pyres are done there in the first place.

I don't want to get into the habit of plans having more words than updates this early into the quest and I think @Azel would tell us if we haven't given enough direction.

While I can understand the reasoning behind that logic I think your plan has the opposite problem. When I was reading that I wasn't sure what you wanted out of it. If you wrote, 'reignite the bonfire' it would be it a lot more clear what you are thinking the your current plan. My other worry is, What reason do we have to think it fears fire? Don't get me wrong, using fire is probably the best bet we have but it would probably be a good idea if we try and think up a backup plan in case fire doesn't work.

How does this plan look to you fire folks?

[X] Try to distract the thing.
-[X] Reignite the bonfire in an attempt to drive back the creature. Even if it doesn't scare it it will at least gets it's attention off Kveta.
-[X] Tell Kveta to run and get the adults when you get it's attention.
--[X] If it looks like the fire scares it, find a branch and light it, that might help ward it off. If it's not scared, run. We don't want that thing anywhere near us.

This is pretty risky, but I don't see many other alternatives besides just legging it. Let me know if you guys have any ideas.

Our reason for believing it fears fire is that the things that appear to be related to it have displayed a fear of fire.

[X] Try to distract the thing.
-[X] Fire, lots and lots of fire.

A bit more detail then effectively a 1-word plan would be appreciated.

Okay so what is flammable around us?

We're on a cleared hill, are all the materials of the pyre burnt or are there still remnants of whole sticks/logs/branches?

Is the clearing in long grass or short, is it dry or green and fresh?

Are there branches and such within reach? I don't think we have time to go and get something if it's not already basically right next to us.

Most importantly, how long can we make this fire last?

For a while, neither of you saysa thin
"says a thing", or "says anything"
Idly you wonder if others know about he worms too
"the"
Then it is over and her eyes sink to the ground while she beings to walk past you towards the village.
"begins"
When there is only an arm length left between the two of you
"arm's"
Still puzzled by Kvetas weird behavior, you almost yelp as you turn around.
"Kveta's"
With no one to bear witness to you speaking to thin air, there is little to loose.
"lose"
Not strange as Kvetas father when he stayed at the tavern for too long
It's arms swing wildly to keep it's balance. Every time it's hands are drawn through the tall grass, a few stray strands of it fly away.
And when they finally are within an arms reach of another, they both stuff.
The creatures arms shoot upwards, it's clawed hands firmly locking on the sides of aunt Svajones skull.
Teeth like needles take on a life of their own, the dirty brown things ringing the monsters mouth suddenly twitching like a spiders leg, hungrily grasping for anything that they can get a hold of.
Missing or extra apostrophes. Also, probaably "stiff" instead of "stuff"

The images are charming, as usual.

What did it come for? It's physical, so I doubt it finds the souls of the dead as attractive and nourishing as fully spiritual maggots... although it nommed on our aunt's skull, but I thought that was mostly because she interposed herself between us. Is it just our luck, or is the concentration of "strange" around us higher than usual? Not every aunt stays around, and I assume the ghouls don't come at every funerary pyre either, or people would've been more alert.

The area is cleared and the grass around it pretty wet. You have sone leftover branches and assorted detritus around you that didn't burn entirely, but no logs or other things to keep a fire going for long.

Glad to hear that they are appreciated. :)

@Azel

How far is the hill from the town and can we see the town from the hill? We lost sight of Kveta behind a bush so I'm assuming there's no direct path.

[X] Try to distract the thing.
-[X] Fire, lots and lots of fire.
-[X] Reignite the pyre keeping the fire between ourselves and the shadow creature, light a branch for self defence.
-[X] If the branch seems enough of a deterrent and likely to last long enough, attempt a retreat to the village.

I haven't said anything to Kveta because it should be pretty obvious to her to run and if this thing is any smarter than a dog it's going to realise our distraction as just that if we start telling across the field.

A bit hard to see, but at least you can spot some bits of torchlight from the village. It's maybe a 15 minute walk for you.

It's generally considered that disposing of the dead too close to your homes is bad mojo. One has to wonder why...

[X] Try to kill the beast :
-[x] Grab a rock from the ground and like our primitive ancestors bash the creature.

The king of beasts is the human, no silly inhuman being will terrify a superior homo.

[X] Try to find Kveta and flee with her.

I don't think fire will give us all that much of an edge.

[X] Flee right now. You have no idea where Kveta is and she should be sensible enough to run on her own.

We don't need to run faster than the thing. Only faster than Kveta.

@Azel, how do you count the votes? Do you first detemine the winner for the main vote (here Distract vs. Flee with Kveta) and then look at the subvotes for details, or do you consider all the Distract votes with different subvotes as separate for the purpose of finding the winner?

As the votes are now, in the first case, Distract would win, in the second case, Flee with Kveta.

@Gingganz, the first one. Voter intent matters more to me then nitpicking about minor details and plan makers shouldn't be punished for minor alterations. That just invites bandwagoning and the spoiler effect.
