The Lonely Earth - Earth ISOT into Magitek fantasy

So nothing and any group that can afford a private rocket can make a space colony?

Time for the Nauvoo I guess.
Sure if you want everyone to die trying to settle inhabited planets and landing in an already occupied area or getting ganked by void pirates or void fauna.

An unescorted rocket to the largest moon of Xarazanth has a very good chance of simply being eaten by a void whale or attacked by any number of privateers, pirates, or brigands. If we posit say, Elon Musk making the trip he runs a good chance of being killed by a star dragon if he passes through their territory (defined as being within a certain distance of the dragon) without paying the needed tribute. Or perhaps the spelljammer brigands of captain yort make him walk the space plank. Or perhaps he runs into void sharks and gets eaten.

Never go alone and unarmed across great distances in fantasy settings.

The more you explain the more awesome it sounds and the less I believe people would avoid going.

I know I would sign up to slay Void Dragons, and you've already gotten Japan on board with space whales. With a nearly post-scarcity economy with magitek mass production, and a need for orbital control due to air being contested by enemy planes, as well as for long-range communications, spying, and force projection, I can't see space not being colonized super hard.

And while habitable moons are cool, I meant actually living in space because planets suck.

Some quick calculations for the orbit velocity of a planet the size of the sun with a surface gravity of 1 g puts the low orbit velocity at over 83 km/s, over ten times the orbital velocity of a low-earth orbit. You'd need torch drives, or the magitek equivalent, just to get into orbit, and anything like that is going to be by definition a weapon of mass destruction. It's not going to be exactly easy, nor must the setting necessarily allow it

A lot of people in power are probably going to be more interested in either settler or extraction colonies with people to exploit integrate and immediately available resources to harvest than they are in trying to start infrastructure from scratch in the Ether.

So anyway, that last entry seemed kind of excessively dense to me, and it wasn't really clear where all that exposition was coming from? was it just a long lecture by the beetle priest?

The last two entries were out of universe articles. I'll be mixing them in where I feel is needed. Though as time goes on I'll substitute in more in universe texts.

From the sounds of things not being the target of a settler colony will probably be the bigger concern.

COLORUN: "There are in essence, twelve types of magic. Technically thirteen but the thirteenth is theoretical."

ADAM SAVAGE: "Mind listing them for me?"

COLORUN: "Gladly. Arcanum, Divinia, Psionis, Aethyry, Lex, Mistrum, Empora, Zarith, Kaet, Yratum, and Ozrith. The thirteenth; Aeonia; is something beyond the means of even the creators of the universe."

COLORUN: "Arcane magic, Divine magic, Mind magic, Nature magic, True speech, Mysticism, Empowerment, Wild Magic, Runic Magic, Superscience, and Inherent abilities."

Colorun indicated there are 13 types of magic, before giving a list of 12 items.

1: Arcanum - Arcane Magic
2: Divinia - Divine Magic
3: Psionis - Mind Magic
4: Aethyry - Nature Magic
5: Lex - True Speech
6: Mistrum - Mysticism
7: Empora - Empowerment
8: Zarith - Wild Magic
9: Kaet - Runic Magic
10: Yratum - Superscience
11: Ozrith - Inherent Abilities
12: ???
13: Aeonia - Impossible Magic

Given the inclusion of Aeonia on that list, I can't help but feel that the omission was deliberate, and that the missing line item 12 is in fact:

12: Druzh - Dark Magic

Am I right?

His system counts Lyrr; light magic as the twelfth field because Druzh is forbidden for a good reason. I just forgot to list Lyrr. :X will edit that soon though.

So the proper list would be 13+1 (Because Aeonia is the primal force and beyond the ability of even the twelve makers and cursed thirteenth to use and so cannot in fairness be counted).

As for why Dark Magic is banned, it alters the mind and body in twisted ways and turns a person crueller, more selfish, and more wicked. It's like a drug. The Totenkopf dynasty only grew worse with every scion as their lineage became increasingly tainted with Druzh and the Druzhan; the Dark Elves are called that not because of their skin colour (like Warhammer's Druchii they're actually quite pale on average due to living in a cold and lightless realm) but because their widespread usage of Druzh has made them people you should probably not be in the same room with.

They're not the sexy femdom bisexuals of the Drow or the racist crab breeders of the Dunmer; they're sadistic fascists who live in the literal shadow realm and believe the problem with Kemendahar is that it grew too soft.

Fiends are a bit more complicated. Some are malevolent because of the religion that created them with no Druzh involved. Others are Druzh afflicted.

Well that is generally a pretty consistent thing about dark magic across many settings its extremely evil with a tendency to twist and corrupt the people using it.

Druzh was made by Druzith because Druzith believed that creation should suffer to make it stronger.

Druzith is not honoured as one of the twelve makers for a reason.

Except an order of magnitude increase in rocket costs just puts us back a decade or two, while our production is about to skyrocket up orders of magnitude due to magitek.

That's not even counting the obvious nuclear engines that ignore the whole issue.

Except colonialism of that type isn't as profitable as regular trade, and there will already be a plethora of civilian and military infrastructure going to space regardless that will need to be serviced.

Space in this universe isn't empty though. Going into space means having to be able to fight actual space battles with dragons and people who've been doing it for way longer than we have.

Have a post ready but I'm way too tired to finish the editing tonight.

Expect it soon after I awaken though.

Which is why we'll need space shipyards and asteroid mines to supply them, ensuring from the start a permanent space presence.

Chapter 7: Comradely Clowns and Chinese Conspiracies
After Action Report, Beijing Raid - By [REDACTED]

It pleases me to report to you comrade General Secretary, that the operation to remove the Herfindic sailors and seize their technology for chinese use was a success. With the aid of our Jothii guests and contributions by the available special forces of our regional partners we were able to vanquish all opposition.

We note however, a severe deficiency in our infantry combat capabilities compared to our enemies. As expected we were required to use grenade launchers and anti-tank munitions extensively due to the significantly superior body armour of the heavier marines of the Herfindic foe.

The magic of the enemy was also a vexing proposition that required assistance from our visitors to overcome. It is the recommendation of myself, [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and [REDACTED] that we immediately develop our own training programs in these magics so that we may counter any future threats.

It is my opinion that this confirms the obsolescence of our current assault rounds, and that we will either need to move over entirely to the usage of smart explosives or explore new ammunition types capable of substantially superior armour penetration characteristics. The enemy's "spiker" rifles, are also devastating to human flesh and current body armour is largely ineffectual.

We have confirmation that most of these mages require some verbal or somatic component for the casting of their spells. This provides some, but not a tremendous deal of warning and more experienced magic users may be able to manifest their abilities without these components. Further analysis of gathered footage will be required.

The jesterlike "Adrumor" summoned by the Jothii are normally unsettling with their cartoonish adherence to natural laws. We understand that these are spirits summoned from a pantheon known as the "Carnival of Revolutions", and that they highly value freedom. However instead of beholdening ourselves to a pantheon that may be contrary to the goals of the People's Republic, I would advocate a revival of Chinese spiritualism founded in our native Mahayana influenced traditions. Present it as a restoration of Chinese pride rather than a religious movement.

Some of the more unusual abilities of the cheif Adrumor summoned, a creature that appeared like a carapaced jester with largely featureless jester masks with limbs that seemed to have no bones; included the ability to banish foes to some manner of pocket reality where they would have to play a game of "dodge or die", as well as the ability to "free" things. Even more abstract things such as "souls from bodies" and "warships from their crews". Teleportation also appears to be within its repertoire. Studying an Adrumor might be of value to us, if we get the chance.

Of particular note were the two dragons, Darastrantornizon and Kezinthranith. By far the most accomplished mages on our side, they were able to suppress most of the worst magic of the enemy, confirming our suspicions that unless properly coordinated; a few powerful mages can counter a large number of average or weak ones. This has some tactical implications for our own mage development programs. While we have reason to believe that Joth generally holds the upper hand in the field of magic over Herfind, it does mean that we will need to cultivate talent.

The ships we captured are meant to be used by either land or air breathing crews, and so can be put to use immediately once we have trained enough sailors for them. Once the industrial technology from Joth arrives, we should be able to utilise these designs for inspiration for our own naval expansion schemes. For submersible craft in particular, I can see this find being China's greatest ever advancement in naval technology.

From what we can discern, Herfind's ruler is a Mage-King who will likely decide to fight personally if his capital is besieged. While eliminating the head of state of an enemy is not a typical tactic, it is something we should consider. As a strong monarchy, Herfind will likely be thrown into chaos without its head of state.

PS: Are you aware of a man in a mirror mask with black gloved hands? Jothii sources are either unable or unwilling to offer us any further data

Central Committee Response

You have the thanks of all of China for your successful mission, comrade. You will be justly rewarded for your efforts and your insights will be invaluable should we decide to engage with Herfind and allow ourselves a piece of the pie when the Kingdoms fall.

Your recommendations will be taken into account, and we hope that you will be able to offer us a continued fruitful partnership with Jothii for the remainder of the time that we can trust to have good relationships with them and their alliance.

The ships will likely have to remain in study for some time, perhaps indefinitely before we can consider pressing them into our navy. With the construction speeds being offered by Jothii technology we may be able to make use of what we learn in mere months or even weeks, rather than years.

Already it may be possible to all ships in our carrier expansion program ready for battle before the summer. More commanders however, will be needed to mobilise for this war, and you have shown great skill in commanding special forces.

Regarding the dragons, as far as can be determined they are a highly atomised and loosely organised group who hold a high opinion of themselves as one of the "guardian peoples" of the material universe; alongside Krakens, Salamanders, and Anasni. We agree with your assessment regarding their importance, and will be looking into ways to ensure mutually beneficial partnerships.

Particularly the Lung clade of Dragons will be of substantial spiritual significance to the people to earn the approval of. If you encounter any dragons of this type, inform us immediately so that we may begin efforts to study these creatures.

However we must also warn you that Joth is a radical anarchist society devoted to the worship of the God Darminilquin and the pantheon of the "Carnival of Revolutions". We advise that you keep cautious regarding attempts by Joth to proselytise us to the worship of their Jester God and his circus.

Their way is not ours, and they should be reminded that if they seek China's aid; that there are certain aspects of our society that they must learn to respect.

Seek out an audience with some of their less chaos loving allies; we will send word of whom to associate with more closely once we have the necessary answers from Joth.

PS: We are unaware of any such being who fits that description unfortunately.

Saerana's personal memoirs

That's another interview done and a bit of my faith in the American people restored. I don't trust the American one iota though. Looking through their history has me convinced that unless we can push them our way through soft influence we'll probably be having significantly more hostile relations in the future.

I'm quite amazed at their leaderships' ability to act as if they're correct while not knowing what they're talking about in the slightest however.

I've apparently become something of a celebrity to them? I don't really get it. I don't even do all that much more than the other executive councillors.

How many more times am I going to have to tell them that "first speaker" is not a very powerful title? I'm not an autocrat or a monarch, I just handle negotiations, sign things, draft stuff, and call meetings.

The whole "comrade Saerana will lead the way" thing is weird and uncomfortable, whether it's ironic or not.

Even worse are the paparazzi who are just obscenely obsessed with the least important details. I'd like to go back to being an obscure footnote in politics. It's better than people asking me about what kind of shoes I wear or what colour my underwear is.

I just hope that Ilthendil and Arostin will be more able to handle this when the Americans meet them...if the Americans meet them. I'm not exactly sure if the Cyclone is going to redirect its course.

Maybe I should consider retiring early and taking a break for a while? No...I can't do that. I'll do it when we're out of danger and we can have someone who isn't as bothered about this as I am take my seat.

It's not all bad though, I enjoy talking to the more ordinary people. There's more genuineness to them even if they're kind of ignorant at times. I think we can get along, even if I don't exactly trust the people who hold power in their society.

I've tried my best to offer answers to questions they have about...to be honest their own society as much as ours when possible. Hopefully they'll get something out of it. I'm just stuck here praying that my answers were good.

I do wish I had the time to see the things they keep on asking me to, but I can't go through every single gift they send me. I haven't even touched the games a lot of them think I ought to be playing yet.

When's a good time to get back to them on that? Within a week? I'm not even sure where to start. While I'm sure I'll have to have a look through their popular culture to get a feel for what zeigeist they have going, pouring through everything is going to be a slog.

I should probably propose including more first contact training at the next council meeting. We were clearly not ready for an incident like this while the Cyclone was unavailable during an arcane storm.

I could also do with some chocolate right now too….

Invasion Scare turns out to be curious Aranean merchant convoy - BBC

An armed convoy spotted by NATO and Russian warships on patrol in the former arctic ocean has turned out to be a large merchant marine convoy under armed escort due to the possibility of attack by pirates, sea monsters, privateers, the Conclave of Shadows, or other threats.

…..

A review of the manifest of the convoy found that it was principally loaded with an eclectic mix of toys and games, war materials, and ores of new metals unique to the new universe. Their apparent destination is to an underground nation known as the Zhtrufbon Kingdom.

…..

When asked if business could be conducted, the worker-owners of the Undiki Marine Collective were enthusiastic about the chance to expand into new markets. Negotiations are currently underway at Brussels and St.Petersburg. The United Kingdom remains unable to form a coherent response.

Democratic primary dominated by threat of war, relations with new powers. - The Nation

After the unthinkable has occurred, the Democratic primary is being confronted by the monumental task of completely reorienting American society for possible total war as well as a radical transformation of international relations. No longer the world's principal power or even close to it and faced with the threat of an invasion of the mainland for the first time since the War of 1812, the primaries may just be the most important in American history.

…..

A substantial fear exists within many in the Democrat party of the possibility of the Trump administration having to preside over a herculean war effort and also serve as America's face in international relations to an entirely new community. However disagreement over how to manage that is dividing the Democratic party. Progressives are backing a revival of FDR's "war progressivism" programs to put America back on the same tracks that defeated the Axis powers, while establishment Democrats are currently unsure of what policy to back.

With how long Strakhul and its allies will remain aloof towards America being uncertain, many are also pushing for an attempt to remove the entire Trump administration as quickly as possible out of fear of possible catastrophic mismanagement of a wartime economy and complicated international relations. With more details about the radically non-capitalist societies of Joth and Atericil becoming clearer every day, another debate has emerged about what allies America should seek out.

.....

With the primaries guaranteed to play a part in shaping America's role in Xarazanth and whether America may be swept away as another victim of the powers of Dark Magic, it is doubtless that this will likely be the most intense campaign season ever seen. Already the field of potential candidates has increased as many more hopefuls announce their considerations for running and issue statements regarding their thoughts on the increasingly strange situation.

Australian Government* collapses as PM is assailed with infighting (again) - Sydney Herald

In what has become something out of a Greek farce, Scott Morrison has become yet another victim of Liberal infighting as the fragile coalition of keeping the liberals in power by the thinnest of margins pulls apart completely over the looming threat of all out warfare and the literal shift of the world's geography. A new general election is expected to be called shortly as the country is currently ungovernable by the current ruling party and the country's politicians are already mobilising to take advantage.

…..

Bill Shorten's Labor Party is expected to be the best advantaged to pick up the pieces of the shattered Liberal coalition and take back the reins of power in Australia. Already having the benefit of being able to go on the offensive against its electoral opponents, Labor has issued statements critiquing the Liberal Party's "dithering in the face of unprecedented global crisis and change." Smaller parties are looking to profit from the general elections at the expense of the larger parties as well with hastily constructed platforms regarding their policies towards the natives of Xarazanth.

…..

Of special interest and relevance however, is the subject of policy regarding the continent of Antarctica which is expected to melt rapidly with its new latitude as well as the expected "climatological chaos" of Australia's new position on the surface of the massive planet. Religion also takes on a far more important part of the political debate than before, with some calling the entire policy of secularism into question in the face of real and active deities.

Considering that it's possible to form new gods through belief, I really hope they set up a forum for people to discuss and min-max and just outright design the best possible god/religion they can think of from the ground up.

We've already had people do that mostly as a joke (see the Flying Spaghetti Monster church) and since this is so much more real I really think that is something that should be done.

Someone actually did that once in an RP in the same universe/multiverse as this work takes place in.

To say it did not end well would be a tremendous understatement.

Deities are individuals with their own goals, agendas, hopes, and dreams. They are shaped by what their followers see in them but they are not bound to that.

A proper faith is in essence, an arrangement between a religion and its pantheon.
