The Last Knight (Digimon)

Ninety
You were floating freely through space. For a moment, you didn't quite know how you had gotten there. Then, it came back to you. Dexmon's change of heart, the merging of your minds and then, Yggdrasial's betrayal. Once more, he'd turned someone into a tool. An unwilling tool. Dexmon had never been free of him, only made to think that he was.

Rage. Fury swamped your mind as snapped into a standing position, brilliant wings extending from your back.

"Yggdrasial! That's the last time you make someone a tool! This ends tonight!"

And then, you realised that the scene had changed. You were back in the realm of the great tree, its branches spanning the infinite worlds. Twisting and turning through all eternity, but now...

The tree was burning. A great conflagration rising from the very bottom, leaping from branch to branch. Crackling wood so loud that it seemed to assault your ears. The world around you was literally burning, the smoke rising to make the scene a hellish picture. And through it all, came the beast. Yggdrasial. Dexmon. They were one and the same. The massive crystal form still mutating. Growing bigger still, the armour becoming thicker. Improving on the design, you thought cynically.

It roared. A verbal sound. Possibly the very first that Yggdrasial had ever made, and it pierced you to the core. Driving nails into your very soul, as it resounded even over the flickering fire.

"Gallantmon." UlForceVeedramon was rising towards you. He looked battered, but you were happy to see that he was alive. "What is that thing?"

"Yggdrasial." You said. "It's Yggdrasial. Dexmon consumed him, and they merged. Liken a jogress, but different. He's far more powerful now."

"The world-tree is burning." Examon was speaking from far above. You were glad to see that he still lived as well. "I don't know what that means, but..."

"I know what it means." Omnimon said. "Ragnarok. He's ready to burn down the world."

"Not if we stop him here." Veedramon said. "While he's in the city, he's still contained. We stop him before he gets to the outside world. Its our only chance."

"We're fighting Yggdrasial now." Omnimon said. "I never thought I would see the day..." He smirked. "Good to see you, Gallantmon, by the way. I did not get a chance to say so before. You seem to have grown in your absence."

"More than you could know." You said. You looked around, seeing to your assets. There was Omnimon, Examon, Veedramon and yourself. Gankoomon, Crusadermon and Dynasmon were nowhere to be found. Perhaps they had not survived.

"Lucemon?"

"Fled when the world tree was set ablaze."

"Then it's just us. Royal Knights fighting the god we once championed."

"Yes." Omnimon agreed. "Even with all of our power, I am not sure if victory is possible."

"Nor am I." You said softly. "But we must try."

"There is one other option." Examon rumbled. "If we sever the connection that binds this city to the Digital World then he will be contained for now."

"He'd find a way out." You said. "That's Yggdrasial. He is a god."

"Perhaps, but it would buy time."

"Something to think about if the fight turns against us." You said. "Are you all ready for this?"

"I have been ready since I came here." Veedramon said. "Dynasmon and Gankoomon are gone, I think. It's just us now. I could hardly call myself a knight if I let them go unavenged."

"I am prepared." Omnimon said. "This battle may not be one we can win, but I will give it my heart and soul. To do anything less would shame us all."

"I know not why this has happened." Examon said. "But I know evil when I see it, and I know my duty is to oppose that evil. I am here to the end."

"Well then." You said. "Let's do this. Fight together, cover each other, and make him pay for every one of us he takes. Let's go, Royal Knights!"

How are you going to fight?

[]You're going to fight on the frontline with the heavy hitters. Along with Omnimon and Paladin Mode Veedramon, you're one of the strongest Digimon here.

[]You're going to let Veedramon and Omnimon take the hits, fall back and provide fire-support with Examon.

[]You're going to try and circle around, taking advantage of the confusion of the fight to surprise Yggdrasial and hit him from two sides.

[]Other?

So what happened to Jesmon?

Eh, I'm just a really fast typer ^^. It kind of bites me in the ass sometimes though, since I can make a lot of typos. You guys catch some of them, but you should see the ones I end up removing before I post xD
I was just going to ask what was your secret and now you go and tell me you were born with it. :p Way of shattering my hopes of become a lightning fast typing machine!

Born with it and years of practice! I decided that I wanted to be an author early, wrote years of fanfic on FFNet, run rpg games on google docs, and just generally really know my way around a keyboard. Joking aside though, I'm pretty sure it's just years of practice, and having the keyboard engraved so deeply into my mind that I can type in the dark pretty legibly. xD

You're not sure. Veedramon didn't mention him, but that doesn't mean he didn't die. Maybe Veedramon just didn't see it, and is holding onto hope that he is still there. Or maybe he got knocked down and moved to safety. Plenty of possibilities.

If we really are one of the fighters that can take and dish out more damage fighting in the frontlines seems mandatory. Still, we are pretty fast and hitting him from the side may be the best strategy from a strategic point of view, even If it risks Ygdrasill raining more harm to Omnimon and Veedramon.

Meanwhile I started pretty late, being an avid reader much more than a writer. The fact that half of the time (like now) I'm writing on my phone (and with it obstinately changing every combination of more than three letters in an italian word) surely doesn't help... Am I correct in assuming that Gallantmon Crimson Mode is a scarily fast flier?

Edit: I'm guessing yes after rereading our Four Great Dragons fight.

[X]You're going to try and circle around, taking advantage of the confusion of the fight to surprise Yggdrasial and hit him from two sides.

Aww, I should have known that Alphamon Ouryuken was too much to hope for as far as a result of a jogress between Gallantmon and Dexmon :(

Yeah. I can probably reveal now that jogressing with Dexmon would also have put you in direct conflict with Yggdrasial, causing him to trigger the override with you in the body as well. How that one would have went is pretty up in the air. It would not have been an instant game-over, but it would have spun the quest into an entirely different direction. Maybe better, maybe worse.

But it would have sucked for the other knights. I can tell you that much.

Indeed, of the Royal Knights assembled he's slower only than Veedramon. Of all the Royal Knights, he's still probably one of the fastest when he really pushes himself. Again, he's beaten by Veedramon, but when it comes to speed, who isn't?

Anyway, I am probably going to close for the day now. Kinda tired after so much writing xD. I am away on Saturday, and may be back on Sunday, but if not, I will try to conclude this quest on Monday or Tuesday. We're getting near the end now, folks. The last stage of the boss fight.

Let's see who is still standing by the time we get there.

I just can imagine a Megidramon X made of White Digizoid (or whatever it is Ygdrasill is made of) and crystal trashing around all the Royal Knights effortlessly o_O That would have been awesom- I mean really, really bad.

Got carried away there for a moment.

Could we delegate him to the hit-and-run strategy from the sides. I guess he is fighting on the front lines because he knows that this will be the last fight from him anyway but that's no reason not to what he does best.

Good for me, I shall collapse in bed in a few minutes anyway! I was worried that another sleepless might would have hurt just a little bit my studying schedule.

I'll wait impatiently for the next time you feel to continue this story. Can't wait to serve Ygdrasill his own ass on a silver platter (because that surely will happen, not the opposite- Right? Right?).

Have a good night, till next time!

That would have been worthy of a Standing Ovation at the least. :D Anything can happen, I really hope Dexmon isn't truly dead.

We were a Royal Knight, but we are something different now.

Boss battle time. I did NOT see that one coming. I read the chapter that contained the yes/no choice, went to do something else for a few hours, and came back to like two updates. Wow.

"Let's go, Royal Knights!" As soon as the words were out of your mouth, the battle had begun. Examon brought his great lance slowly into position, it was almost akin to your Gram but on a truly gigantic scale. And just like your Gram, Examon's Abrosius had teeth. Fire sparked from the pronged tip of the weapon as it discharged a shell the size of your whole body. Trailing fire as it streaked towards Yggdrasial.

The Lord of the Digital World put on a burst of speed, racing towards your grup as the shells impacted around it. Their effect was...notable. Three shells, each one igniting a wave of fire which swept from its point of impact. Radiating outwards and joining together to create a sea of flames which rolled down upon Yggdrasial's crystal form. Even from where you stood, you could feel the heat of the flickering tongues of fire.

You moved, gliding off to the side as the other knights engaged the monsters, waiting for your chance, for your angle. You knew that it would not be as simple as simply defeating Yggdrasial with force; there had to be something else to it. You would watch and wait, strike where you could, and learn its secrets. Then, you would destroy the would-be God.

As expected, Examon's shells were not able to damage Yggdrasial significantly; even with the great dragon pouring more fire onto the blaze, the crystal lord seemed to simply shrug it aside. Rearing from the end of the fire, and moving towards your group.

Veedramon and Omnimon shared a look; a simple incline of the head, and then they moved. UlForceVeedramon's paladin mode leaving a streak of white light in his wake. He was almost too fast for you to see, wielding the blade that he had somehow gained from Imperialdramon. Yggdrasial took the first hit, hard metal clashing with crystal armour; the Dexmon body swung a claw, but Veedramon was far too fast, darting backwards even as his chest glowed with golden power.

"Ray of Promised Victory!"

The brilliant white of the lighty which erupted from the stylised ''V'' of his armoured chest was almost enough to blind you, driving into Yggdrasial's upper body. The crystal monster opened its mouth, and for a moment there was nothing.

Then, a beam of pure white emerged – the same beam that Veedramon had struck it with. The paladin-armoured Digimon leapt out of the way, trusting to his legendary speed to carry him clear even as the beam nipped at his heels.

Then, Omnimon was there. Wielding the massive, Grey Sword, he brought it crashing down with all of his strength. The world shook for a moment as Yggdrasial parried, and you saw cracks splinter across its arm. But with Dexmon's tenacity, it pushed forward. Swipping with taloned claws that threatened to tear even Omnimon's armour. The Knight of the End bore it well, parrying and striking where he could, the sound of blade on blade ringing out clearly in the void.

Examon could not fire now, for the battle had come too close to his team-mates, but you saw him draw a bead anyway, waiting for his chance to launch a shell right onto Yggdrasil's position, the moment he got the chance.

The battle was ferocious, you had seen Omnimon fight before, of course. But seldom did he get a foe that he could use his full power upon. Not often had you seen him fight in a way that made it clear he was holding nothing back. Now was that fight. Each clash of his blade was accompanied by a blast of force, enough to drive back almost any foe. And he struck fast; the Grey Blade blurring as it parried, and drove. Seeking to force Yggdrasial back with sheer power. Yet, this was not all, for every time he got the chance, Omnimon would deploy his second weapon. The Garuru Cannon. Blasting Yggdrasial with power, and sending shards of crystal flying. Omnimon turned and twisted as he fought, using all his strength, unleashing power that he had not seriously had to make use of since the fall of the Demon Lords so long ago.

And yet, for all the blasts it was taking, for all the parries it had to make using its arms, and even the blows which slipped through its guard, Yggdrasial was not easily beaten. For each blow Omnimon landed, Yggdrasial landed one as well. As before, the claws seemed to simply ignore armour, and you saw Omnimon start to grow more cautious as that fact became clear to him as well. Yggdrasial's strength was great, truly impressive. Even Omnimon was staggered when the world-computer landed a hit, and no matter how many rounds Omnimon unloaded into it, Yggdrasial was never forced back. It was relentless as a force of nature, forcing Omnimon to spend energy defending when he could be striking.

Each blow exchanged rocked the world; the shockwaves reaching even your isolated position; sparks trailing on each hit as the two warriors duelled.

Through all of this, Veedramon circled. Clearly, he didn't want to get too close in, probably a good idea given his fragile nature – at least when compared to those two – but that didn't stop him helping. Again, and again, that strobing light reached out. His Ray of Promised Victory scorching against Yggdrasial's body. Pushng the world-computer off-balance, letting Omnimon land hit after hit, finally managing to drive the monster back a step.

Omnimon pushed forwards, wielding his sword half like a blade, and half a battering ram, Yggdrasial reared up, and tried to bing a claw crashing down. But he underestimated Omnimon's speed, and the fused mega countered with a rising slash. Opening a deep cut from belly to shoulder. Light bled from the wound, and Yggdrasial recoiled.

Omnimon tried to follow up, but was forced back when Yggdrasial's mouth snapped open, and a series of finger-length beams sliced through the air. As you watched, one of them caught him in the knee, and melted through his armour. Omnimon grunted, and shifted to the side, suddenly unbalanced.

Yggdraisal sprung, claws set to rend him apart. Before it could, Veedramon moved in, driving a powerful tackle into his side which sent Yggdrasial spinning. Its body spun widly, twisting as it fell from the branch upon which they had stood. With a shout of victory, Examon took the shot. Thunder boomed, so loud that it pained your ears as a shell leapt from the barrel of the lance.

The ground erupted in flame. Not simple fire as last time, but now, the fire burned blue. Intense as a cracking storm. For a moment, you thought that you saw Yggdrasial outlined in fire. And then the fire exploded.

Shock-waves ripped past you, forcing you to brace yourself as secondary detonations ripped through the conflagration, with enough force to shake the tree upon whose branch you were standing. You counted them as they went, ten, twenty, thirty separate explosions, each one more intense than the last. Embers swept up past you as Examon continued his volley, Each blast rocking the world, screaming past you and exploding in the distance.

"Ray of Promised Victory!" Veedramon added his own fire, sending a brilliant burst of holy light into the blazing inferno. Yggdrasial's form was too far down the pit for you to see now, but you saw the detonation as Veedramon's attack hit. It swept past you, shaking the world. But the assault wasn't even half done yet. Omnimon floated into the air, the Garuru Cannon extended as he took careful aim. There was a sense of great power, barely constrained. Time seemed to stand still for a moment as embers danced around his sleek armoured form.

"Supreme Cannon."

The Garuru Cannon discharged a single beam, which seemed so small when compared to the fire added by the other knights. But you were ready for it, and as seconds ticked by, you found yourself counting it off. One, two, three, four.

There it was. A power so brilliant, so searing that it threatened to blind you if you didn't turn away. A detonation so intense it put the sun to shame. A second or so after that, you felt the effect of it. The world-tree screamed – not the Yggdrasial you battled, but the great tree on which you fought. Enough branches to built a dozen cities were ripped to shreds, a hellstorm of wood and fire floated between you, marking the path where Omnimon's beam had taken. You blinked quickly, trying to clear your eyesight, and saw only utter desolation. A single hole punched through hundreds of layers of branches, and below that, merely fire. The power of Omnimon.

Then things went to hell.

A single beam of light was shot from within the fire, lancing upwards at a speed greater even than Veedramon possessed. Before you could shout a warning, before anyone could even think to react, it was over. The beam took Omnimon by the side, expanding so as to eclipse his whole arm. There was no explosion; there was no show of power. The limb was simply gone. Omnimon grunted – more in surprise than pain – and crumpled forwards.

But it wasn't over, the lance of light continued upwards, slowly fattening until it took the form of a Dexmon. It was Yggdrasial, travelling in the form of a beam of light. Examon's cannon swung quickly, and barked. Once, twice, three times. Each earth-shattering boom intended to knock the comparatively tiny Yggdrasial away. Yggdrasial absorbed each impact without complaint; the shells struck and detonated against it, but its body sailed through unharmed. Examon's wings extended, becoming a protective shield with which he prepared to shroud himself.

The white light licked out again, this time in the form of a series of bullets. Dozens of them, hundreds expelled from Yggdrasial's claws. They traced across the great dragon's body, and on contact began to expand. Eating up everything in their path. Air, wood, armour and flesh alike, nothing was spared. In less than a second, Examon was falling. Trailing a nimbus of bleeding data as his great form slowly began to sink.

In less than two minutes, two of the strongest Royal Knights had been dealt with.

Still outlined by Examon's falling body, Yggdrasial twisted. Orbs of light in each hand. Veedramon paled, but prepared to defend himself, as did you. But deep in your heart, you knew that you could endure a hit from that no better than anyone else. If that landed, you were done.

Yggdrasial drew back its claws to cast, power bubbling through its body, and then...

"Supreme Cannon!"

Its whole body rocked as a beam struck it from behind, detonating around it to send Yggdrasial's aim off. The orbs twisted away from it, detonating far to the sides, and avoiding anyone. You looked down. Omnimon had propped himself up against a branch, his sole remaining arm still defiantly raised. Data was bleeding from his side at a steady rate, but his eyes were strong, his gaze firm.

"Supreme Cannon!"

This time, Yggdrasial dodged, the blast streaming past it. It glared down at Omnimon, and for the first time you felt actual anger emanating from it. Genuine fury as it aimed its hands again. Summoning the light of destruction. Omnimon wouldn't be able to dodge, he was barely keeping himself together.

"Omnimon!" Veedramon sailed forwards, his wings spread, obviously intending to get the wounded mega away from the blast. But even with his speed, you weren't sure that he'd make it in time. Yggdrasial's beams were fast.

And then, in its anger, Yggdrasial turned its back to you.

[]Strike it now! Strike with all your force, and strike to kill! Bring that monster down once and for all!

[]No, you need to save Omnimon! If you strike to kill, the seconds it takes to build power will ensure his destruction! He taught you, he practically raised you into knighthood. You can't let him die now!

So, what have we learned from this escapade?

Yggy is a douchebag of a planner. Opening may not be openings at all.

Yggy's physical attacks ignore armor.
When Yggy's mouth opens, run.
Yggy can eat beams and fire it back at the enemy.
Yggy can use X's Nova Strike to counterattack.
