The King and I (Fate Zero SI)

Yes, yes exactly like this.
Besides, i'm sure it'd do a world of good to Medusa herself.

We, that being Teams Matou and Team Gilgamesh,
FTFY :p
Caster in his astral form turned his attention to me with an amused sneer on his face. It was a blessing that he apparently had not gotten fed up with the modern world at this point in time. "So what now, Mongrel? Where do you want to hole up like a rat?" Gilgamesh said. On second thought, maybe I was on thin ice right now.
I'm pretty sure Gilgamesh would find Devilman (the manga) intriguing and at least be amused by Dragonball.
"Now, now Caster. If it is to make sure that Angra Mainyu, or Avenger as he is known right now doesn't go on a rampage in your garden. We need to make sure to at least control one of the spots where the grail would appear", I said, drinking some bottled and chilled green tea that was bought earlier. "The Church would bring a lot of trouble, and I don't think you'd stand for observing the city government at the City Hall building. The leyline on the mountain would be the best, since it'll mean that the enemy Servants and Masters would have to ascend to approach you as the king."
Hahaha! I'm sure Gilgamesh would see modern bureaucracy as insufferable as we would! So much paperwork...
"Oho, to think you would be so considerate of the dignity of the king. You should be commended, mongrel" Caster said, hand under his chin. "The king is agreeable to your suggestion."
Yaaaaaaay! :lol
Hmm, do you think you could manage to summon Enkidu before Kayneth can summon Diarmuid? Medea was able to summon Sasaki, after all, and while Gilgamesh isn't a proper magus, he does have all the goodies and Sha Naqba Imuru to tell him what to do...
We can't let things go too well.
I hope Sakura gets Rider!Medusa as a summon, i always liked those two together.

Summoning Caster Gilgamesh this early should not effect Waver summoning Iskander.

Also, I like the fourth picture the most.
How dare you say "no" to this face !?!?
She's not crying, so it's actually pretty easy for me to say no to her. :p

The First Day and Second Night Part Two
Sakura and Shinji had been shuffled away by a boy wearing glasses. The head monk said that it was one of his sons. There was a note of pride in the man's voice. We were given rooms in one of the temple wings. I suppose I would have to get used to sleeping in a Japanese futon.

Berserker went about helping to clean up the temple floors, polishing them until they shone. I would think she enjoyed it as she constantly spoke the praises of sanitation.

Kariya went to turn in early. I bet he didn't get much rest last night, what with undergoing the last of the worm training for the war suddenly interrupted by a Caster attack. That being said, I should hope he would get started on claiming the Matou Headship to keep Sakura safe. Not that I could help him with that; I knew nothing about inheritance law, neither was it my issue.

After being instructed on what locations in the temple were to remain private, I was left to my own devices. Caster had left us earlier to observe the grounds and leylines. He did say that the land seemed adequate for the special project we had discussed earlier. I couldn't help him with his final judgment since I wasn't a mage. Walking along the paths of this temple gave me some measure of peace, especially when I was assaulted with visions of red bloodstains splashed all over the wooden floor. Uryuu's face was staring in empty ecstasy at the ceiling. The cloying scent of decaying blood replaced the serene air of the gardens.

I seized a supporting pillar as my knees buckled beneath me. It was to save my own life, I desperately rationalized to myself. He had murdered several families who had no reason to die. My fingernails dug into the wood. Sharp spasms etched themselves into my palm and fingers. The pillar became slick but I only gripped it tighter.

If I didn't put an end to him then, he'd just continue slaughtering people due to his distorted mentality. A sour bitterness welled up from my stomach to my throat. I choked it down. I would deal with the issue later, after the war. Because it might not be the last time I would have to kill somebody. Uneven laughter came crackling out of my mouth. A maniacal rhythm disturbed the tranquility until it broke down into heavy gasping. I trembled as the sharp sting of several splinters of wood brought me back to reality and a measure of self control. I blinked my eyes several times, the images of murder blurring back to the materials for new nightmares.

I quickly looked around, unease weighing on my back at the thought that somebody had seen me. My outburst would be cause for questions and suspicion and we didn't need that if we were to use this location as a base of operations. Relief drowned me as it didn't seem as my episode was noticed by the residents here. It was worrisome to me, if this sensation would flare up again. I would have to deal with it eventually.

The more pressing thing was to seek treatment for the self injury caused from the wood from the support pillar. Small streaks of blood were flowing but I supposed that was a good thing since it would wash away any bacteria. There was so much planning to do, to make sure people didn't die senselessly.

I considered the situation of the War, as I sought a monk to direct me to a first aid kit. Well in truth, the War hadn't formally started yet as all the participants weren't present. Then I recalled Mr. Emiya was in this war and what that entailed. I was going up against a man who had an ideal and what seemed to be a heaven sent chance to achieve it. All that it would cost Emiya was a one time payment of sacrificing anybody to bring about the perfect world he could not achieve on his own .

In the face of this chance to have his dream realized, would he even stop his involvement in the war? It took his being face to face with All the Evils in the World to change course and by then it was too late. Everything he loved had been burned down to ash.

I remembered he had come just a few days before the war started properly, but after he summoned Saber. He could be just as bad as a Caster class servant, prepping locations with explosives and other lethal measures. Everybody here was in danger now when the Magus Killer found out about us.

Then I took a deep breath as I recalled vaguely the scene where Kistuguru confessed his weakness to his wife. How close that disaster that was the Fourth War's end would have been averted. Sure it led to a magical girl universe but all things considered would it really be that bad to shift this world line to Prisma Illya?

Yes, all things considered this was probably the best choice for everybody. What could possibly go wrong?

Now I considered how to push the Magus Killer's sanity to tip towards running away from his blood-stained path of hell. But how could one push a man as firm in his convictions like Emiya? They were a stubborn lot. Eventually I found a monk who gave me the supplies needed to treat my wounds. That sort of small kindness threw me off further from the whiplash of last night. I wandered about in a daze. The hours passed by quickly as I paced the serene settings. My mind had been going around in circles, trying to think of how to successfully change the mind of someone who wanted to turn into an unfeeling machine of salvation. No solution came to mind.

I wasn't getting anywhere so I decided to take a break from worrying about what to do in regards to the question of the Magus Killer? Maybe Caster could work his charismatic magic? It was to my surprise as the sun was turning the sky a deep red. I wondered then where Caster was, and the thought that he could have encountered something to show his displeasure added to my worries.

I went down the mountain path, wanting to find out where Caster had gone. There came a slight burning in the middle of my spine. It felt as if I was reeling something in as the feeling grew as I followed a direction. Yet my path became a game of hot and cold as I went stumbling around the wilderness surrounding the temple. Eventually I saw Caster looking out upon a lake. His figure cut against the background like a etching out of a fairy tale.

His axe was stabbed in the ground. The stone tablet that functioned as his spellbook glowed as cuneiform cycled above it. "Your Majesty, is the land suitable to bear your greatest work?" It had been something we had discussed on the way to attack the Matou manor. As a Caster, Gilgamesh could set up a workshop. However his origin as a king of Mesopotamia and the collector of all the world's treasures had me thinking of a ridiculous idea.

Ironically enough it was only when Gilgamesh played at being a Caster could he use this particular Noble Phantasm. The problem was that it couldn't just be fired off like nothing from the Gate of Babylon. No, this was a noble phantasm that actually required work and resources to be put into it. It was not something Gilgamesh as an Archer would have the temperament or the patience for. But with this early prep time, and as a last ditch effort to shut down the grail? It was something worth to invest in. It was a pity that Caster's Terrority Creation was A rank. Then again maybe it was for the best, not to pull something out that would make all enemy master parties drop their rivalities to target us.

The surprising thing was unlike Ea, Caster seemed eager to try to bring this Noble Phantasm into existence for all to see. Then again it was something, that he was completely justified in, worth boasting about.

"It is suitable enough. There is the question if the needed preparation will be complete in time for the conflict" Caster said "I did not build Uruk in a day after all, but time spent on this would take the King from the actual battles" He waved his hand and clay bricks floated down from golden circles in the sky. There was something about the furrow of his brow that prompted a realization from me. Even as a Caster, Gilgamesh still did long for conflict in his heart.

"True, you are not Romulus, to supposedly build Rome in a day, your Majesty" I said "Is there nothing that can assist you in this task? Does all of your attention have to be spared on this work?" I was slightly afraid that Caster might become bored and then run amuck to amuse himself in entertainment once again.

"If only my people were here. I am a king, not a stonemason" Caster said.

"Are there no magical treasures that work stone in your treasury? Wouldn't humans have dreamed of things to complete their tasks for them?"

Caster blinked in sudden enlightenment. "Ah mongrel, so your baying does have value." Several boxes appeared from Caster's gate. They opened up to reveal little dolls inside. With a wave of Caster's hand, the little figures flew up and out of the boxes. Their path in the air had them grow larger until they reached the size of the limits of human growth. These figures, brown in color and wrapped in bone white linen turned as one to Caster.

Gilgamesh waved over another stone tablet over in front of these gathered magical servants. More clay bricks appeared on the ground and the animated dolls went to pile them according to a design I had no reference to. I looked back to the boxes they came out of and it seemed they were covered with hieroglyphs instead of cuneiform. "Hmm it seems another mongrel has summoned?" He said

I caught my breath "Has your younger self also appeared, your Majesty" I asked. The situation would be even more chaotic if that happened. Fuyuki city could end up a magical wasteland with all that ego in one place.

Caster laughed "Wouldn't that make for a glorious war then, Mongrel? For the world to share in a double portion of the King's glory? No, as far the Grail and the War is concerned, one of me is enough."

"Then who could it be?" I asked. Dealing with Archer Gilgamesh would be bad enough. However dealing with a complete unknown sent a chill through me as it could mean I'd have to completely replan how to deal with Tohsaka if he had summoned an unknown Archer or even a different class.

"Don't think you can rely on my Sha Naqba Imuru excessively" Caster replied "All I see is that that a mongrel has summoned, nothing more. Do you question the ability of the King?" To be fair, to agree with such a sentiment would be laughable. For Gilgamesh, it would have been amusing to see magi mongrels that would have trusted in the Magic Resistance of the three knight classes. However they were up against Ancient Babylonian Laser Beams.

"As you say, Caster. I merely question what good my options are if this whole play changes characters around us" I said "Forgive me if I'm making mountains out of molehills worrying about acting on changed circumstances."

"I'm sure you will make something suitably amusing out of this" Caster said as he directed what could have possibly been the prototype of the ancient egyptian funerary dolls that turn into skilled workers for the dead.

"If you say so." I said and the thought of Kiritsugu reared its ugly head. "Ah, if it would be possible your majesty to not trouble the monks here with the War? It just doesn't sit well enough with me to take advantage of their hospitality like that."

Gilgamesh laughed. "Hah, that is commendable Mongrel. To worry for our hosts' wellbeing. I will do as the King's duty is to those that host him. However there are more pressing matters for my attention." With another wave of his hand, a portal appeared before me. I rushed to catch the items that dropped down. It was an old book with the Japanese script that was unreadable to me, a similar book but blank and a stylus. "Since you have your hands free" Caster said "prepare for them a suitable gift for hosting the King. That stylus will allow you to diligently and accurately copy a worthy gift from the King."

I took a look at the book that dropped out the Gate of Babylon. The stone tablet given to me to communicate with others spoke the title out aloud. "Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, compiled by Dōgen Zenji." I wondered what was significant about this book that it would be suitable to be given by a king. But then I sighed and resolved to get to work. I raised the stylus and turned the page. It was going to be a long night of copying.

"And be quick about it, mongrel" Caster said "For I shall have you survey the battlefields in this city. I shall not suffer a layabout for a retainer." I hurried to transcribe the text, it would not do to leave Caster waiting.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In the morning after a long and tedious tracing, the head monk of the Rouji temple's eyebrows rose when I handed him the finished manuscript. He flicked through the text that was folded accordion style. Then his gaze became wide and he looked as he was struck dumb from sudden insight then and there. He said something to his fellow monks that sent them into a frenzy. Just what was in that manuscript?

I just realized that our protag himself was summoned, both in mind and in body.
He is, or at least should be, in the same situation as Caster!Medea in Fate/Stay Night, with no odd income, and yet have both his own and his servant's existence to fuel.

Yes, all things considered this was probably the best choice for everybody. What could possibly go wrong?

Really? Really? You ask that, in Nasu, during a Grail War, when standing directly above the corrupted Greater Grail?!

… By the way, does the SI not actually know that the Greater Grail is right underneath the Temple? As a Caster, Gilgamesh would easily be able to both purify it, and modify it as he saw fit...

Known servants-masters pairs so far:
Caster: Gil (protag)
Berserker: Nightingale (Kariya)

Archer: Napoleon (Tohsaka)
Assassin: Old man of the mountain (Kirei)

Probable participants (masters, because it's already been shown that servants are not the same as canon):
Einzbern / Emiya
Waver Velvet
Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald

note: of the three i only see Velvet as a possible recruit into our faction. He is highly influenceable and doesn't really have a Wish. Emiya is, as said previously, too self-centered to be of any use for us, and the less said about Kayneth the better.
note, the second: i believe the last chap's new summoning is not one of the two side-story pairs, so there should only be two summonings left before the fun begins.

Are we limited to the Saber/Lancer/Rider, or will there also be Ruler/Avenger slots open, or in replacement of the previous ?
And is there even a way in-story to know ?

I hope Nightingale catches SI in the midst of one of these fits so we can see that she her response isn't always "harm then heal."

However, that is something she will attack you over.

That sounds like a very bad plan.

Sounds like
Well Gil calls everyone mongrel, you need to watch the context so see if it was meant as an insult or as regular adress.
The SI gets a capital M, so that's probably a good thing?

Did I miss something? Where did it say Napoleon got summoned?

It occurs to me that mystery wise, Napoleon is one of the weakest Servants, right? He's pretty modern and I'm fairly sure it will offend Tokiomi's magus sensibilities.

How is the protagonist able to sustain Gilgameshs's existence despite being from a world where magic circuits don't exist? Like Gilles was sustained by feeding on the blood and souls of his victims, and Prelati's tome was kind of a weird loophole, but this version of Gilgamesh seems unlikely to sully himself with the souls of these mongrels. For that matter, how is Kariya able to sustain Nightengale without the worms, since Zouken didn't do that just to be a dick.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Kariya's aptitude as a magus is practically nil, not enough for him to have Master qualifications by Grail standards. The Crest Worms were meant to allow him to bypass those limitations, allowing him to use them as pseudo Circuits by sacrificing his flesh for mana output. Removing the worms means that he's basically back to his reduced state before the war, not enough to support Nightingale's existence.

If you had yourself act as Nightingale's mana supply, that would ensure that she could still manifest...but that opens a new can of worms altogether, in that having one man be the support of TWO Servants would make him run dry very quickly.

There will be an explanation on that in a later chapter, the short of it is, since Sakura has a little problem with Crest Worm removal affecting her magic circuit control and capacity, she's now linked into Kariya's contract as a mana battery. As to how, Ancient Babylonian Magic is the Best in the world!

Gilgamesh probably has a goodie in the Gate that could effectively grant him Independent Manifestation. The Jeweled Sword, for instance (it was made by humans, so it would exist in the Gate). Come to think of it, Gilgamesh could probably cleanse the Grail of Angra Mainyu all by himself right now, before the damn thing has a chance to manifest, or even modify the Grail itself with Sha Naqba Imuru telling him what to do...
