Kirei Kotomine opened his eyes to the familiar ceiling of his quarters within the Fuyuki church. He raised his hand above his face to stare at the command seals emblazoned on his skin. Once again he wondered, why was he chosen to participate in the Holy Grail War, a competition created by heretics.
Curing a turn from these thoughts and left his bed he went about his morning routine as a man of God. However when he went to his father's chambers to prepare for the Morning Prayer. Kirei found his father in a state of agitation. He asked his father what was the matter.
"The first moves of the Holy Grail War have been taken, my son" Risei said. "Two servants have already been summoned. Berserker and Caster." Kirei's father laid his hands upon his son's shoulders. "My son, it may be earlier than I and Tokiomi expected but you must summon your servant now for your own safety. The Matou's home has already been involved in the war. I do not wish to have your life at risk out there unprotected by a servant of your own."
"Yes, father," Kirei said. They fulfilled their obligations as men of the Church and moved to the building's basement swiftly after. They would not commit heresies directly before the Lord's face. Dark deeds needed dark spaces. Kirei with his mechanical precision prepared the summoning circle in chalk. Candles were lit to throw wavering shadows on the wall.
Risei stood to one side, a box in hand. "My son, in my travels for the Eighth Sacrament, I have seen many things and gathered many relics for our Holy Mother Church." Risei opened the box to reveal a skull-shaped mask. "On a mission in Iraq, I obtained this mask buried behind a wall. The people there said that this mask belonged the Old Man of the Mountain with no name. "
Kirei took the mask from his father. "Of course, I've never attempted to confirm it as such, but it would prove useful for you, son," Risei said. Kirei placed the mask in the center of the chalk circle.
"Isn't the word 'assassin' itself enough to act as a catalyst for the summoning?" Kirei asked, recalling his lessons from Tokiomi.
"That is true," Risei said "However, destiny should not be left to chance."
Kirei nodded, obeying his father's wishes on how to proceed. He raised his arm that bore the command seals. He recited the summoning aria, sending the chalk sizzling. The candles flared up and out, leaving the basement into darkness. Risei turned on the lights.
Kneeling on the floor, wearing the mask that was used for a catalyst, was a Servant covered by a black cloak. On the left side of the Hassan was an unusual lump. In a rattling voice, the servant spoke. "Assassin-class Servant. I heard your call from the shadows."
"Take heart, Kirei," Risei said "With this your safety is assured. I'm sure Tohsaka will be relieved with your progress."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To an outside observer of one Tokiomi Tohsaka, he would seem a picture of elegance and poise. His pacing within his study would have given the impression of dignity. His profile against the darkened skies would not be out of place in the old, rich neighborhoods in London.
However Risei could tell from experience and acquaintance that the Tohsaka head was severely agitated. It seemed that the man did not take the news of the Matou house's destruction well. The priest and friend of the man was aware that the magus had given over one of his daughters to be adopted into the other magi family that had a presence and stake in the city and the war.
"You are sure that it was Berserker and Caster summoned?" Tokiomi said, teeth clenched. He slowly twirled his cane mystic code back and forth in his hand. "And there's no way for you, Kotomine, to determine which was summoned first, and to whom at this point in time?"
Risei shook his head "It is unfortunate Tohsaka, but both had been summoned in the early hours of the morning. I know we intended for my son to summon the first servant to scout out your foes" Risei spread his arms "However neither of the two masters have approached the church yet."
Kirei was standing in the corner and gave a bow to his teacher. "Master, my father determined that my safety was in doubt with two servants already active. As we discussed earlier I had summoned Assassin successfully." Out of the shadows loomed the cloaked form of Assassin. Beneath the skull mask and black cloth, one could not tell the servant's gender or form. However Assassin gave what appeared to be a severe look of disapproval to the Tohsaka head.
"You have done well, my student. Once I have summoned Gilgamesh, the War is as good as won. Out of the Three Founding Families, only we, the Tohsaka have remembered our original goal for the War. I must thank you once again, Kotomine, for your help." Tohsaka laid his hand on a glass covered box. Within that box was the accumulation of years of resources, favors, and subterfuge. Smuggled out of the vaults of France's geological society was the catalyst that would ensure both Tohsaka's servant and victory. Risei noticed his son tense but put it out of his mind.
They moved over to the room where Tohsaka had prepared his summoning circle. In the center of a circle cast in iron and silver was the man's catalyst, the supposed fossilized skin of the first snake that stole the herbs of immortality. For a mythical artifact, its appearance was rather shabby. It looked more like a withered piece of fabric that would crumble just from being breathed on.
However, on it was placed the hopes of the Tohsaka family to lead them to the glory desired by all well-bred Magi linages. Tohsaka repeated the summoning aria passed down to him from the previous generations of Tohsaka heads. An unearthly light filled the chamber. Prana built up in the circle and discharged itself in a mighty flash.
Rainbows flew across the room. Their source was behind a man with reddish blonde hair dressed in a military uniform from the continent. "Bonjour mon Maître, I am Archer." A great metal cannon held in the servant's hand, cast in wrought iron and etched in gold, slammed in the stone floor causing hair-thin cracks. "The man of possibilities, the man who releases the rainbow. Come, Maître, with me victory is within your grasp!" Archer wove his hand forward towards his master.
Tohsaka staggered back, dread etching itself on his distinguished face "Something has gone horribly wrong." Unnoticed by Risei or Tohsaka, Kirei hid a smile in the shadows.
