The Iron Oath (An Oath/Contract Based Cultivation Quest).

Voting is open
I just realized I forgot to put in a weapon vote, I've been meaning to put it in an update when its being used but if were going straight into combat I'll need it before.

So, we must now decide what weapon were going to use.

A few things to know, weapons do damage based on your body score plus the successes they roll over an opponent defensive roll. additionally all set of weapons have a few different traits that either effect their use, or gives maluses/bonuses for certain things.

But not all weapons are the same, here's a list of a few common weapons and their attributes.

One handed Sword- damage: 1/2 body + 3x succusses. Traits: Sharp, precise (can make called attacks to bypass armor at the expanse of dice) prestigious.

One handed mace- damage: body+ 1x succusses. Traits: blunt, crushing.

One handed axe- damage: 1.5x body + 2x success. Traits: sharp, offensive focused (defensive rolls suffer a penalty).

Spear- damage: 1/2 body+ 1x successes. Traits: sharp, easy to learn (20% discount on XP needed), brace (can be braced to deal 5x damage to charging enemies), reach.

A great axe- damage- 3x body+ 1/2 successes. Traits: sharp, two handed, unwieldy (roll penalty), reach.

Bow- damage: set depending to arrow and equipment bonus (generally around 5-10 on mortal grade weapons) +1x succusses.

Glaive- damage: 2x body +1x success. Traits: sharp, two handed, reach, brace (can be braced to deal 3x damage to charging enemies).

If you have a specific weapon you want but it isn't on this list feel free to ping me and I'll add it.

Now all that left is to decide

[] what weapon are you using.

I don't imagine this will be a long vote and there isn't a moratorium so feel free to vote.

@uri would spear also count for most polearms? or would something like a real world glaive (distinct from the glaive of the movie krull throwing glaive) have a different stat spread

[X] Glaive

Seeing as it's a two handed weapon, it would have different state spread.

Glaive- damage- 2x body +1x success. Traits: sharp, two handed, reach, brace (can be braced to deal 3x damage to charging enemies).

mh...

ok, first of all, I think we can forget about bow and ranged weapons for the most part.

one of Aurelia's strong points is that she has natively high Body, and finds it easy-ish to raise it (and other attributes).

We also took a heavy oath in regard to training, and so we'll have plenty opportunities to train the skill.

Another thing to consider is that USUALLY she won't fight alone. Her retainers will be there to help against monsters, so we'd only really fight 1v1 if it came to honor duels.

I'm leaning towards the great axe. 3x body is a LOT, we'd basically really only need one clean hit to win most fights I think.

Also I just find it funny. I can already imagine it

why do you use a great axe, Aurelia?
Aurelia: "well, I thought that the biggest weapon would help me finish the fight faster so I could go back to nap! Also I don't get why people said it was too heavy, it feels pretty light to me!"

if not this, we could go for something more exotic I suppose.

how about an halberd or Naginata? I imagine they'd basically work as heavier and less precise spears (well, the halberd is kind of a mix of spear and axe actually, which might work well for us).

or if we wanted a sword... what if went for an Odachi, or a Guts-like sword?

just... not a normal sword, please. it's boring!

actually...

@uri two important questions

1) are we choosing a weapon we already know how to use?

2) do we know what's the main weapon of that "best teacher" elder? After all it only makes sense to pick a weapon for which we could get the best lessons on, eventually.

TBD weapon skill- novice 5.

You don't but He's also not the one who will be teaching you weapon skills and if you somehow do end up with him teaching you some, what weapon you have won't make a difference.

[X] A great axe

unless the "dragonslayer/buster sword" is an option, in which case I'd like stats for those.

or, you know, a Sephirot-lenght Odachi.

but more uncommon weapons would be more difficult to find teachers for, so sticking to the great axe is probably good enough.

is there any specific weapon the sect is famous for / focused on?

I was interested in hearing about the stats for Unarmed/Gauntlet Combat, especially in light of the Iron Body and Iron Scales techs-

[X] A great axe

But diving in for a big swing sounds fun!

@uri if I'm reading this correctly, we currently do 30+1/2 successes with the great axe, right?

it also works well with and against the iron body cultivation.

with, because we could do something like tanking a hit to get our our in.

against, because with it offering passive armor it means single stronger attacks are better than, say, quick glancing hits.

Also our body stat is going to grow pretty quickly. if we keep to the current training regime we should get body 6 on week 2 and body 7 on week 4 I think.

I think I'll push for leaving horkos cultivation to the "results" pill in the short term, focus on physical training for at least the first month, and go for iron body cultivation once we'd be near certain to get at least the first layer in a single AP.

Uri, no comment on the naginata/halberd/giant sword?

A naginata is probably close enough for a glaive to count as the same stat wise likewise with the halberd although they might have some different traits but noting major.

A great sword on the other hand will be 2x body+ 3x sucsses with traits seemlier for a great axe.

In that case

[X] A great sword
well well well, quite the newcomer here

You should try to catch up on Distant Stars too Starjaunter! they're both pretty cool quests!

I think I prefer the great axe, but a great sword is a decent second place for me. I just want to go with a "brute force" weapon to really take advantage of our always higher than normal body attribute.

I was a little concerned about the fact that, on paper, this has the most general bonuses to damage than any other weapon we've seen so far-

But if it has the same Unwieldy trait as the Great Axe, and that's not something so easily removed as hitting Adept, then the Successes Multiplier actually has a passive debuff to it due to that same penalty.

With that in mind, that means while a great sword might have a higher theoretical damage soft cap, the great axe actually does more damage reliably.

This amuses me as D&D has conditioned me to expect the opposite :V

I am reading it but I am wary of getting too involved in a quest about magical birds in the 40k universe when I am running a quest about magical dinosaurs in the 40k universe.

I can only hope their initial exploration of space is as fun for Uri to write as the Dragon King's was for me.

Hmmm we're currently tied between a giant Axe and a glaive if something doesn't change in the next few hours I'll tie break myself before sitting down to write.

For people voting: it seems like the main difference is that

The axe does more and more consistent damage (considering Aurelia will.generally have pretty high body stat), but is a bit less likely to hit.

The glaive does less damage, is a bit more precise than the axe, AND has a special bonus against charging enemies.

I think it mostly comes down to how much we value the anti-charge attack. Presumably actual cultivators would KNOW not to charge us, so I'd say the bracing bonus is mostly relevant against mindless beasts and overconfident enemies.

I'm a bit biased, I admit. I really like the great axe

3 dice is not that much, and we don't really need precision, just a solid hit.

I imagine the one handed sword likely has more special techniques for it, as it's more popular, but in and of itself the axe seems better to me

Six hours have passed so I'm going to rule in favour of a greataxe just because I find the imagine of this short girl wilding a huge axe amusing.
