The Illuminators: Last Trinity (A Naruto AU) - Story Thread

Episode 2.2: Word And Bond
She realized that she wanted it...but want and desire were different from need. Ritsu felt herself shaken out of the overwhelming heat. She was still burning up, but...it wasn't her place to move forward. It wasn't her place to take it from him. It wasn't her place to throw away everything she was and could be for this one moment. She turned her head to face the woman beside her, the one with the glowing violet eyes that swallowed her up like the ocean.

Hannah immediately understood.

"There's something our little cutie-pie wants to say to you, mister handsome yakuza. I can kinda sense it," she said playfully as she climbed onto the bed. Her hands went to Tetsuda's back and gently rubbed it, before she helped him strip off his shirt. The tattoo covering his back gave her pause before she resumed her touching, making him grunt with satisfaction. Slowly, her hands worked upwards.

"Spit it out then," he mumbled.

Ritsu slowly raised her head. "You have been a part of my life for so long. You've been in my mind all of this time. You are so much...a part of who I am. You are why I exist."

"The fuck..."

"Shhh," Hannah breathed out gently. "Let her finish..." Her hands were working on his upper back.

"I mean it when I say this. I really mean it..." Ritsu felt her heart start to race. She was tense, starting to sweat. Her arms trembled as she held them against her chest. Hannah slowly worked with her massage, peeking over the yakuza's shoulder.

I am your angel of death. I am your blade.

The black wings spread from Hannah's back.

I will take away your fear. I will deliver vengeance upon him. Such is the will of Almighty God.

She could hear Hannah's voice in her head. Forceful and clear.

She knew it was time.

"I forgive you."

"Hah?"

"I forgive you," Ritsu repeated. "I forgive you for what you did to me. For what you made of me. I pray that your sins are forgiven. I pray that you see the doors of heaven. I forgive you of your sins against me."

Hannah's hands were on his shoulders.

"Please...I wish peace upon your soul. Peace be. Peace...be."

"Raise your head, my love."

Hannah's hands caressed his neck. Her face was like a stone mask, her eyes solid slates of violet.

"You are beauty. You are strength. Praise be to you...you have given this unworthy one his final rites."

Her fingers pressed into the flesh of his neck.

"What the fuck are you banging on about?" Tetsuda said, about to turn his head.

"Tetsuda."

He turned his head back towards Ritsu, furious. In her place was someone else, a woman he didn't recognize.

Petite. With glowing green eyes.

Ritsu and Hannah parted their lips in sync.

"Fare thee well."

Hannah squeezed with terrifying strength. There was a loud snap.

Ritsu watched the light drain from his eyes. Hannah let go and he fell forward, landing on the floor head first in a crumpled heap at Ritsu's side.

Everything was a haze, moving in slow motion. The smaller girl watched the scene in her head a thousand times over before feeling a whisper in her ear.

She went into autopilot mode and ran to the bathroom, locking the door behind her before she sat in the bathtub and hugged her knees. The world came back into focus and she was shivering against the cold floor.

A moment later there was a loud pounding at the bedroom entrance.

"Open the fucking door, you whores! We need to check on the boss!" a voice yelled. Hannah cast a casual glance at the dead body and ignored the repeated warnings, waiting for them to get tired of waiting.

The door was eventually pried open with the help of a shuriken against the lock. Hannah remained on top of the bed as the yakuza members took note of their young boss' predicament.

"Fucking shit! Get the ninja-"

"We've got another problem outside!"

Five...ten...thirteen. Two unaccounted for, then. Did they run off to get help? Hopefully not. She wanted to believe that Joshua had found the extras and taken care of them beforehand...but he was coming off the roof now, so it wasn't an immediate problem.

The three yakuza and one ninja started to crowd the room. Hannah wasn't going to let them past her to Ritsu, so the new wrinkle was this: would she spare these lives or not? Killing was efficient, but less ideal for the purposes of this mission. But she wasn't in full disguise, and they had seen too much.

Joshua, bless his heart, had given her the green light if she felt things were compromised.

[] Hannah
-[] End them. They know what you look like, and you don't want any of them squealing, especially the shinobi. Joshua had control of the rest outside. The sensor is conveniently in the room.
--[] Taijutsu. Nice and bloodless for the most part.
--[] Ninjutsu. Your little go-to is Chidori...it's nice and quick.
--[] Write-in.
-[] Fight to subdue. It might be best if you knocked them out...plus an interrogation later could be very helpful.

[] Joshua
-[] Go for the knockout. You have the speed and power advantage, so you can conceal your identity while fixing this problem.
-[] Lethal option. You're not sure you want to take the chance of leaving them alive, especially the shinobi...
-[] Write in.

[] Ritsu
-[] Do as your mistress said. Stay in the tub.
-[] You're frightened. The window is close by, you can get up and reach it...

Episode 2.3: Word And Bond
Hannah sighed. Events were in motion, then. Poor things...the last sensation they would experience was blinding pain at her hands. Not the worst way to go, but not terribly pleasant either.

She watched as the yakuza unsheathed their long swords, and the lone shinobi prepared shuriken. The room was small enough that four people crowding around the bed took up a notable amount of space.

"Hm." The blonde considered the situation, then reached up to tie her hair quickly.

"What the fuck did you do?" one of the yakuza roared. "What happened?"

"He's dead," the shinobi said. "She must have killed him with her bare hands."

"Oh, perceptive of you. I suppose that intellect of yours wasn't enough to secure a proper promotion, though. Shame." Hannah stood up on the bed, making the four men flinch. "It's not like you can do much as you are. If you turn tail and run, I won't bother with you."

"You sniveling little bitch...we'll teach you to fuck with the yakuza."

"Will you?" Hannah became indifferent to them. "Unfortunately for you, I have a perfect success rate against you trash. That will continue."

One of the thugs started to swing at her legs from behind. Hannah bounced once on the bed, the blade passing harmlessly under her feet as she rose into the air. She came down a moment later and bounced towards the shinobi who threw his shuriken only to completely miss as she bounded past him. Her feet hit the wall and she shot towards him from behind, landing a knee that crumpled the back of his skull and sent him sliding into the wall ahead. Hannah dashed to her right and to the goon in front of the door, faking a high kick and then ducking low as he swung and missed. She swept him off of his feet and stomped down on his groin as he landed on his back, then raised the same foot up and forward to crush his throat, making him flail as he asphyxiated.

The next one frantically scrambled across the bed, but Hannah pulled the sheets from under him and made him slip. He bounced once on his back, intending to right himself.

He was out of time.

Hannah front-flipped in the air above him and came down with a vicious two-footed stomp, driving him into the mattress and the bed down into the floor. She pulverized his ribs and the fragments tore through his heart and lungs on the inside.

The last one swung wildly at her, catching nothing but air each time as she expertly dodged. Her hand shot forward to catch his wrist and crush it, making him drop his sword and scream out in pain. She used the same hand to grab him by the throat, lifting him off his feet as he flailed wildly.

"Guess what?"

He went still as she stared into his soul.

"I fucked with the yakuza. Again."

His scream was cut off as Hannah squeezed down and snapped his neck. She let him drop to the floor like a wet sack and undid her hair a moment later.

"That's that." She heard something like an explosion outside, and saw dust clouding the room nearby.

---

Ninety seconds earlier, Joshua had dragged two unconscious bodies up to the roof and dropped them there. He shook his head.

"Close call, I guess."

He then became aware of movement, and peered down from his perch to see about a dozen shinobi rushing towards the apartment.

"So they've started. Alright, guess I'm on." Joshua skipped down the side of the building and ran around the outside of the lot at full speed before ducking behind the moving shinobi. He hoped that there wasn't a sensor there, and that hope was granted as he noticed none of them turning as he advanced.

Perfect. Pacifist run was a go.

He accelerated towards the first one with pure foot speed and unloaded a left cross to the head of the woman dressed in black. She had only started her unconscious flight through the air when he burst ahead with a body flicker and landed a double neck chop on the two shinobi advancing together. He had counted exactly twelve moving in, and that took care of three.

Another body flicker and he clothes-lined one more from the side before knocking another away with a straight punch. Down to seven.

Now they were just starting to take note, and one stopped to look back. He ate a fist to the face, Joshua holding back power as blood flew from his nose in an arc. The shinobi plowed into the dirt just ahead of the others, who were definitely aware of the interloper now. Three moved ahead; the other three turned and started to prepare jutsu.

Not today.

Joshua accelerated again and hit the shinobi to his left with a slicing right hook to the head, making him crumple. The woman ahead started to orient herself but ate a punch to the gut, puking harshly before folding over and hitting the dirt. The last man turned to run but found himself knocked out as his head was driven straight into the ground.

"Three," Joshua said to himself. He burst ahead as the shinobi reached inside and left his feet, drawing back a fist as he flew through the air. His well-timed leap had him in line with the shinobi at the door, who had a shocking realization that he wasn't going to be able to react in time.

He chewed on a knuckle sandwich for his trouble, sailing into the far wall and making himself a crater. With two left, Joshua stepped ahead and telegraphed a punch. The shinobi drew a kunai and reflexively stabbed ahead.

She missed as Joshua spun in the air and rattled her skull with a kick, sending her bouncing off the wall and to the ground, motionless.

He landed and chambered a punch, then unloaded on the last, wide-eyed shinobi.

---

Ninety seconds later, Hannah waved dust away from her face as she checked the room for chakra signatures. Just one active one remained, and it was the one she wanted to see.

"Hey. Things okay?" Joshua asked.

"Yes, love. You did an amazing job."

"I tried," he said with a shrug. "Hopefully I moved quickly enough that they couldn't get a good description of me."

"A concussion and short term memory loss are blessings as far as they're concerned."

"Hm." He stepped into the bedroom behind Hannah and noted the bodies on the floor. "Couldn't spare 'em, huh."

"I'm sorry, darling."

"Don't be. Like you said, leaving them alive is a courtesy. This might even give us some breathing room, since only a few are dead and the rest are just zonked out."

"Speaking of," Hannah said casually, "did you notice that there were two missing? Of the shinobi, I mean."

"I got two on the roof. Dunno when they'll be up."

"Really, now. Where were they?"

"Far side of the building, like way out. I noticed 'em from the roof but they didn't see me, so I decided not to take any chances. Made me just a bit late getting back though, so sorry about that."

"As if you have anything to apologize for."

"Heh." His smile faded as he looked at the dead yakuza on the floor. "So...what'd he end up doing to you two?"

"Nothing but dying. We gave him a bit of a tease, so he got to see something good before he went. Even that was an ending far, far too good for scum like him."

"I guess after all that he did, maybe it's fitting that he died nameless to me," Joshua said. "I know you're the 'angel of death' and all that...but..."

"I know. I could feel the rage inside of you, Joshua. But leave the dark side of the world to me. I trust you to handle the rest."

"Can't run away from it forever, can I..."

"You can't. But you're above this. Leave burnable trash and the like to me."

"Hannah..."

"Don't argue," she said as she kicked her gaudy miniskirt into a corner. "I already said it once. You're meant for greater things. Let me clear the way for you."

"Fine, fine. I get it."

"Thank you. I'm...just being selfish, is all." She let out a breath. "Let's collect our little Ritsu and get out of here."

"Yeah."

Joshua pried the bathroom door off of its hinges and set it down on the floor. Hannah walked in behind him, and they both looked into the tub to find Ritsu, laid out on the bottom with a shower brush in hand.

She trembled and gulped once, looking up at the two people above her head.

"Ah...how foolish of me. Stupid. I forgot to establish a safety code," Hannah grumbled.

"T...T-Tuesday..."

Joshua and Hannah blinked.

Ritsu sniffled. "Tues...day...dinner feature..."

"Tuesday dinner feature...?" Joshua scrunched up his face for a moment before understanding. "Right. Suzuki tempura. The tea of the day is gyokuro."

Ritsu jumped up and wrapped her arms around his neck, showering him with kisses before pressing her head against his shoulder.

"Good work, Ritsu. Proud of you."

She nodded furiously as he scooped her up into his arms.

"Normally we should burn the place to the ground, but I'll settle for blowing the wall open so we can evade possible detection," Hannah said. "Where are your explosive tags, love?"

"Bottom left pocket. Very bottom. I said bottom, not back. Woman..."

She stuck her tongue out at him before sticking the tag to the wall with chakra. The three backed out of the bathroom and waited, hearing a boom and the wall falling to pieces.

"Smoke should be clearing now. Grab what you need, ladies."

Hannah borrowed a pair of shorts to cover her lower half, while Ritsu put on another sweater and dark sweatpants. She went through her drawers and pulled out a small metal container, filling it with a few precious items before closing it again, holding it tightly against her chest.

"Nothing else?" Joshua asked.

"I have everything that matters. In my hands...and in front of me."

Joshua and Hannah blushed at the same time.

"We should go...before more ninja come," Ritsu said gently.

"R-right," Joshua said. Hannah coughed once and nodded. They left through the new entrance, stealthily heading back towards the onsen.

---

"A-as promised."

Ritsu opened her metal box and handed a stack of bills to Hannah. They sat on a bench near the same same takoyaki stand as before, Hannah between Joshua and Ritsu.

"Ten thousand ryo upon completion of assignment. Thanks for doing business with us," Joshua said with a smile.

"You saved my life. That's the very least I could do, milord."

"Well, you already went the extra mile by selling yourself to us," he pointed out. Hannah counted the bills and gave him a nod to indicate everything was there. With that, Joshua took out his own stack of bills and added it to the existing pile. Ritsu tilted her head, confused.

"That'll cover more than a few nights, and the necessary comforts."

"...haven't you already paid for your stay at the inn?" Ritsu asked.

"Oh, this isn't for us," Hannah said with a smile. Ritsu was confused again until it clicked, her eyes widening.

"No! You can't-" She came to a stop, remembering her situation.

She wasn't allowed to refuse anything her master and mistress ordered.

"You silly girl." Hannah chopped her on the head lightly. "You're not going homeless, or staying in a crummy shelter if I can help it."

"But...but the money-"

"Is ours to use as we please. The transaction is completed. You have no further input, my darling."

Ritsu cursed herself. She should have figured that people kind enough to save her life on a dime would also be this stubborn. "Yes, Lady Hannah. I'm sorry."

"Nothing to be sorry for, darling. Now go check yourself in. We'll see you in a few days. Don't come out until you're back on duty. Promise me."

"Yes, Lady Hannah. I promise I'll be good."

"Good girl. Be safe."

"I will be...I...when we see each other next," she said quickly, giving her benefactors a deep bow as she stood up. She took the generous gift from Hannah - knowing it was for far more than a hotel stay - and headed on her way.

Joshua and Hannah turned as she disappeared into the crowd, heading for the inn and their rooms.

A hot bath later was going to be the perfect end to an already good day.

---
---

A few days have passed since you and Hannah knocked off the yakuza boss. There was all kinds of excitement, but nothing connecting it to you two. Hannah coached Ritsu on everything she needed to say, and the interrogations - all three of them, talk about excessive - went off without a hitch. Ritsu was incredibly obedient and receptive to instruction; you wondered if it was because of the previous three years of trauma or if it was pure affection for the two of you. The contract was irrelevant at this point.

Speaking of said contract, you decide to talk it over with Hannah over lunch. Today is tonkatsu, and it's delicious. Not as good as - well, it doesn't need repeating. But it's great stuff. Hannah is savoring every bite.

"I can only think of one piece of meat currently more desirable than this."

You sigh and shake your head as she wiggles her eyebrows. "Lewdness aside, this is great. We're definitely swinging through here again sometime."

"Mm-hm." She takes another bite of the breaded fried pork and nods with satisfaction. "So. Ritsu."

"Yeah. What's our plan for her? I mean, we want to let her decide ultimately, but she's pretty receptive to what we ask of her."

"It's almost shocking. She has the disposition of a seasoned soldier already...I can't tell what caused it, but I know that our little show with the yakuza definitely solidified something in her mind."

"She's a civilian in every sense of the word..."

"I think if we wanted to, we could mold her properly. The two of us without shinobi bloodlines learned jutsu and all sorts of shinobi techniques all on our own, so it stands to reason that she could too. Then again," Hannah says thoughtfully, "the kind of life we live isn't for everyone."

"Yeah, that much is true. If we push her, she'll go through whatever hoops we ask. But that just might break her into a million pieces, and even if we put her back together, she would never be the same again."

You both quietly contemplate Ritsu as a mercenary, trying to go through what she would need to do in order to carry herself through the world. All of it looks tough on her end.

"If we leave her here...do we still keep her under the contract?" Hannah asks, snapping you out of your thoughts. "I mean, we won't be around to guide her, and we don't yet have the technology to provide her means of keeping in regular contact. My acquaintance has been working on such solutions, so they say...we'll see at that point in time."

"Thinking about tearing up the contract?" you ask. "I wouldn't object. Accepting that deal was about her more than anything. We could keep a proper eye on her, and it was symbolic in a lot ways. Showing her that she wasn't some broken, useless thing with no value, respecting her willingness to risk everything for a chance at freedom...we don't need a slave or anything like that. And maybe she just needs a fresh start here. Or wherever. I don't know for sure."

"Hm. Much to be decided." Hannah picks up another piece of breaded pork with her chopsticks, and slowly takes a bite out of it before chewing slowly.

"Pardon my interruption, milord, milady."

"Ritsu, good afternoon. What can we do for you?" Hannah asks.

"It's a question that has been bothering me lately...I know that you both are set to leave in a few days, you said towards the Hot Springs Village."

"Yeah. Hannah has a contact we wanted to see. Actually, we were talking about you earlier. Contract and everything."

"I understand. It was on my mind since that 'incident' we experienced together. I wanted to ask...if I could come with you."

You and Hannah pause at that.

"I know it's...risky. It will be dangerous. There will be pain, and suffering, and all sorts of horrors that I might be better off not knowing. And death would be all around me. Even so...I want to experience a new life. I want a new start...to truly become a different person in every way. I think that doing this, trying this, even if I fail miserably and you have to put me somewhere safe...it will bring meaning to my life. I know that I am nowhere near strong enough to be an asset to you. This...it's selfish of me. But I want to try. I won't resent you if you shoot me down. I promise you I won't. I love you both...so much. You saved me. Not just my life, but my very soul."

"Ritsu..."

"Master. Please...give me your answer. Tell me what is in your heart. I will accept your decision. Not for the sake of the contract...but because you loved me when nobody else could."

Her eyes are shining bright, ready to accept whatever verdict you deliver.

[] She's expressed her desire to become more than what she was before. Take Ritsu with you.
-[] Go to Hot Springs proper first. You've got something to say to her 'family'.
-[] Head to Hannah's contact directly. Finally time to get things started.

[] As much as she wants to try, you can't let her. Ritsu has to find a new, normal life. She's been through enough.

[] Write in.

[] Leave the contract attached as you move on. She doesn't mind.

[] Set her free at last. She deserves it.

Episode 2.4: Word And Bond
"We'll talk about it later tonight. Hold on until then," you say to Ritsu.

She seems to wind down, going back to a neutral face in the next few moments. "Yes, sir. Until then. Is there anything else I can do for you both?"

"Not for now, my darling. Attend to your other duties and wait for further instruction," Hannah says.

"Yes, ma'am. Thank you." She bows and leaves you alone again. Hannah picks up another piece of meat with her chopsticks and dips it into a waiting ramekin. She slowly chews on it with her eyes closed.

You take an extended sip of juice and set the glass down, waiting for her attention to return to you.

"What have you decided, Joshua?" she asks, opening her eyes.

"We're taking her with us."

"You're sure. I know you're sure. You don't say or do things without meaning." She dabs at her mouth with a napkin. "We'll be leaving for the afternoon, then. There's a small, quiet cafe with corner booths that we can use to our advantage. We'll need to record what we talk over, though I suspect it will be easier in this case."

"You talk, I write."

"Naturally. Fill in whatever gaps I miss, as you're so good at doing."

Hannah is brilliant in a whole lot of ways. Not just smart, like actually one hundred ten percent brilliant. You nod to acknowledge her.

"Ritsu's best bet, and the safest, strongest option, is to specialize in one or two important skills. We are gifted, but we cannot assume she has enough aptitude to carry herself. Her mental fortitude is incredible, but it is no guarantee against the dangers that will emerge on our journey through this ruthless, ruthless world," she continues.

"Let's finish lunch and relax a bit. Then we'll start on the documents and pass them down to her."

"Our standard?" she asks.

"You're the Golden Shinigami. We're using whatever baselines you establish, ma'am."

"Right. We can build from my experience. And yours?"

"Securities and protocol were always part of family life. I'll do my best to follow your lead and make sure any open spaces are accounted for."

"Your life seemed to have its perks."

You shrug. "I can't say with any honesty it was bad, even the past two years were just about inconveniences more than anything. You did what you did from the ground up, practically."

"A good set of skills and a good head are places to start. Those are blessings in their own way. But then, not everyone can spin gold from their looms."

You chuckle as she gives you a smile. The rest of lunch is enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

---

The rest of the day moves ahead as planned.

You keep to your schedule of giving Ritsu your answer later, and set off with Hannah to a sufficiently secure place. Over cups of tea, you both get into the details that you would need in order to establish team protocol. It was almost surreal - in the past month you had gone from wandering alone to forming a team with an infamous super prodigy mercenary and an inn hostess. Even for the times, this was pretty crazy. But you're here, and it's time to act.

The three most important components to be filled out at this time are basic operations security, contingency plans, and team functions from top to bottom. What constitutes OPSEC covers a lot of things, including INFOSEC and COMSEC. TRANSEC will only have vague outlines to be amended later; you're not there until you reach your first destination on this journey. You detail your contingencies and escape routes, standard rendezvous points, and not least your options in case of capture or torture. The conditions for suicidal actions are detailed, and there are several triggers to be met for those. It is purposely moved away from any pragmatic kind of decision, and you stare at each other for a moment after completing that section.

"Just to be clear..."

"It's for Ritsu," you say. "But even she shouldn't be so hasty. We're going to risk everything for each other. You'll do it...I'll do it...and she will too. But sometimes..."

"Then we shall change the tide of history. We will gather that strength."

"...we will." You start on the next section. "Let's continue."

"Yes, let us. My apologies."

She continues with team function. Chain of command, operating strategies, appropriate maneuvers and combat positions. Nothing is too detailed but the baseline is established so that Ritsu can follow along no matter what, and you had an eye on each other no matter what happens. Your assessments will be updated the stronger you become, and as your technique pools grow. More detailed strategy and protocol will only come as Ritsu specs into an area and focuses on it. Secondary things come up as you find yourselves with extra time; Hannah will take care of the requisite information databases, psychological stability and extra training in social areas, you'll handle technical fighting, personal safety, and things such as battlefield awareness.

"How long are you thinking?" you ask Hannah as you finish writing.

"Three weeks minimum."

"Probably should stay safe. Give her a month to absorb everything."

"That sounds lovely. We can go with that."

"Great. I think we have everything we need for tonight and beyond." You make sure the ink dries properly before slowly rolling up the last of your scrolls, fitting them into your bag. Finishing your tea, you leave a tip and head back to the inn with Hannah.

You go for a light run, mapping out 5 kilometers to run up and back while Hannah chooses to meditate in her room. Ritsu brings you some food as you come back, and you take a nap before dinner. You wake up a bit early and go with Hannah to the front desk, asking about Ritsu's employment situation. Her pay was enough to live on, but really only that much without the benefit of generous gratuities. Informing them of your intent to take her with you at the end of your stay, you end up meeting with the onsen owner, a woman of middle age who has an elaborately crafted smoking pipe.

"Miss Tanaka...she's a really good one, she is. Mm. Mm." She takes a puff on her pipe and sighs, her black hair let down as you sit together in her office.

"Will it be a problem if we take her with us?" you ask.

"Mm. Hm. It's short notice."

"Of course," Hannah says. "We realize how much it hurts a business to lose someone so good in such a short period of time. What you lose is more than a good employee."

"Hm. Hm. Hm. I enjoy that kind of honesty." She frowns slightly. "But then. Hm. You're among the best customers we've had. It's asking a lot of you."

"We're okay with it, ma'am. We want to come back here someday, because of all the memories...it's the least we can do."

"Hm. Hm!" She smiles. "You're too much, boy. Any idea how many women would want to gobble up someone so pure?"

"I've been informed...extensively," you say with a look towards Hannah. She puts a hand over her lips.

"I don't think he'll ever learn his lesson," she teases. "Silly boy. I have to protect him from all the cougars constantly. So troublesome."

"Hm. Hm. Hmmm." The owner takes another puff on her pipe as she thinks. "Will it be...dangerous?"

"It will be, yes. A lot is going on in the world. But...we've both resolved to protect Ritsu with our lives," you say.

"I only assumed as much. Hm. Hm-hm. A donation in exchange for her employee file. She's all yours." The owner hands you a scroll. "She'll be paid out at the end of your stay in the next four days. Look after her...I don't know what she's been through, but it's been a lot from what I can see. Thank you for looking after her."

"We'll keep our promise."

"Hm-hm-hm. Sweet...a sweet child you are. Go on before I really pounce on you. And if you need anything in the future...Asuka Tarou. Call me Auntie the next time you see me," she says with a wink of her grey eyes. "Promise there won't be any problems then."

"Ah," Hannah says with realization. "The Onsen Princess herself. You're sitting in front of the Gold Reaper, by the by."

"Oh? Looks like a lucky day, hm-hm. Make sure you keep in touch, then."

"We will. See you when we see you, Auntie." You give her a deep bow.

She smiles and waves as you both leave.

"You really called her Auntie. Amazing."

"What?" you ask. "She told me to."

"Oh, you sweet, foolish boy...if you're not careful, I'll have you wrapped up in me soon enough. Value your agency, won't you?"

You sigh and grumble about weird women under your breath. With Ritsu's freedom secured, you only have a few more things to do.

---

"Pardon the intrusion."

Ritsu arrives promptly at the time outlined; Hannah told her to come to your room after dinner.

"I must apologize to Lady Hannah," she says as she sits on her knees in front of you. "I was terribly nervous about today, and waiting for the reply..."

"There was nothing that you did wrong, and nothing to apologize for. Be calm, my love."

"Yes. I can be calm." She takes breaths in and out, slowly winding herself down. Her eyes look to you with hope and wonder.

Right. This was a pretty big decision.

You clear your throat. "We talked to your boss. She says you're a really good worker, and that losing you would be really hard on the business."

"She said that..."

"Yeah. Things...to get out of the way first." Hannah hands you the scroll with Ritsu's contract. "This thing here..." You grab the scroll with both hands and snap it in two. "Null and void."

"That means...that I'm free," Ritsu says slowly. She's struggling to comprehend it, but eventually does.

"Our contract with you is no longer enforced," Hannah continues. "You are free to do as you like, whenever you like. Just as before we met you."

"Thank you. Thank you...for setting me free."

"Ritsu...what you said at lunch really resonated with me. With both of us, honestly. You said that you were ready to accept anything that happened because you loved us, because you were happy as a result of what we did and provided for you. You said that it wasn't about the contract, and I believe you. You trusted us enough to handle you with care and to free you from the darkness you were facing. I want you...to repeat what you said that time."

She looks at you with determination. "I want to come with you. I want to be by the side of the people who have loved me and cared for me more than anyone else has in their lives. You're warriors, mercenaries. Fighting is part of what you do. Danger is part of what you do. But taking on a risk like me, and going further than that, making me safe...it was above and beyond anything that you needed to do, or should have done. You have big, beautiful hearts...and I want to be like you. No matter what it takes...I want to be like you."

You give her a grin. "Better than I could have hoped. Hannah?"

"I more than approve. Not just cute, but impossibly spirited," she replies with a bright smile.

"We made the decision just after you left at lunch. The rest of the day was us writing protocol and convincing your boss to let you go."

"D-do you mean...you really mean...!"

"Welcome to the family, Ritsu."

She jumps into your chest and buries her face in it.

"Thank you! Thank you thank you thank you thank you! I promise I'll be good! I'll be strong! Thank you! Oh, thank you!"

You smile and hug her back, Hannah following to wrap her arms around both of you.

"Family, huh." Hannah gives you a cheeky smirk. "Gonna put a ring on it soon?"

You scoff at her.

"Mom, Dad...don't fight so soon."

Ritsu smiles and the three of you burst into laughter.

---

You skip the night's dip in the onsen to run over the important things. Ritsu devours information like you didn't think was possible, and you get through OPSEC insanity faster than you would have guessed. You quiz her just to be sure and she passes easily. A lot of other things were field exercises, so you simulate them a bit inside the space of your room. With a grasp on the movements required, it now comes down to speed and execution. Athleticism would help, but it wasn't strictly needed, and certainly not in her case.

Hannah takes over to ask some specific questions, and you realize that she's trying to figure out a specialty for Ritsu so that she can delve into it as fast as she can.

It gets really late, and the three of you turn in eventually. Hannah's 'ownership' of Ritsu for the duration of your stay meant she wasn't going to get in trouble, and Auntie Asuka is aware of the situation. You plan to make use of that and maximize what she can absorb before you hit a turning point.

The next few days are steady. You eat and enjoy yourselves before your time is up. Ritsu grabs her clothes from the hotel she was staying in, you drop in a big donation at the front desk for Auntie, and then grab your few things and move out.

It's not all that far to the hidden village. But you have Hannah send out a message that you won't be arriving for a while yet.

Right now all of your time is devoted to Ritsu. And after that...you've got an important stop to make for her sake. The next month won't see any significant gains on your part or Hannah's - near the top of your games, the kind of training you needed to grow your power would kill Ritsu outright at this stage. So you take it relatively easy and focus on the smallest, weakest member of your team, your family.

She's on the lean side, and at 165 cm, relatively tiny. There's not too much growing she can do at nineteen, so you quash the hopes that she'll have some sort of chakra induced growth spurt. Her choices of clothing are nondescript and functional, fitting properly without being too tight. Clothing could be more elaborate and stylish, like with Hannah, but it also was a symbol of skill; a way to announce that you were strong enough to do whatever you wanted, and that included wearing whatever clothes you wanted, function be damned.

"Hm? I don't worry about flashing my underwear. Most people are too dead to talk about it, anyways."

Hannah did have a way with words sometimes.

Ritsu's growth will depend on how you start with her training, and you had agreed with Hannah that she had an area you should start building on.

---

Ritsu's Element - pick one element to start.

[] Fire
[] Water
[] Earth
[] Lightning
[] Wind

---

Ritsu's Specialty
- this will serve as the basis of her combat growth. While she can expand her repertoire later, it's recommended IC that she start with a single focus because it's already hard for normal humans to get up to speed, especially at her age. She will get a crash course in chakra molding and use, at the least up to the point where she can do the bare minimum to survive a shinobi encounter for 10 seconds. Stats will be distributed accordingly. And yes, the inclinations of the two instructors will factor in if you desire.

[] Social/infiltration - focuses on things such as spying and deception. Covers things like psychoanalysis and seduction arts. Intellectually focused.

[] Scouting/tracking - focuses on scout duties and extracting information from small clues. Favors speed and nimble movement.

[] Sensing - difficult enough to start that it's a dedicated category. Can be developed into both contact and non-contact techniques.

[] Medical - requires fine control but pays off by having some sort of healing on hand. The road is steep to start.

[] Ninjutsu - as advertised. Relatively quick to pick up. The type of ninjutsu will inform accompanying skills.
-[] Ranged - out here, movement speed is less important.
-[] Mid-distance - calls for more balance.
-[] Close - getting in and out asks for a bit more speed and toughness.

[] Genjutsu - illusion arts. Requires good control and will take longer to see results, same as medical.
-[] Audio - good for distance and as a setup for others.
-[] Visual - you want eye contact. You're going to be closer than usual.
-[] Touch - going right into the face of danger.
-[] Smell - discretion has to be exercised for allies.
-[] Taste - a special one. You're really going to want this for a specific build, and you'll probably guess it isn't one suited for direct combat.

[] Taijutsu - punch things. Possibly kick them. Requires the least pressure to learn, but results will vary. This doesn't cover special weapon skills, but can help grow them later.

[] Bukijutsu - covers the use of weapons. Weapons are not hard to use and cover a wide range. Specific techniques are harder, but not impossible. Shuriken/kunai arts are already part of Ritsu's basic kit.
-[] Puppet - basic training for puppet arts. The instructors are familiar with the starting points.
-[] Sword - this also falls under taijutsu. Starting with this will link you to taijutsu skills.
-[] Explosion - strong to start, and can be made deadlier with increasing skill.
-[] Staff - also called bojutsu. Strong, but with a learning curve.
-[] Fan - comes in various flavors. Depending on the type, you have different paths.
--[] Gunbai - non-folding war fan. Same type as Madara used. Versatile, and distinctive. Unlocking secrets will be difficult.
--[] Giant - very tall folding fan. Same type as Temari used. Big curve, but big results once learned.
--[] Single - easy to learn, easy to carry, and easy to use. Small curve but need to claw for bigger results.
--[] Double - with a bit more difficulty comes a bit more reward.
-[] Scythe - weapon with decent range, but slightly longer recovery. Different styles for flavor.
--[] Kama - single scythe.
--[] Kusarigama - sickle with chain. Hanzo's weapon of choice. Hard to start, but possibilities are endless.
-[] Bow - on the tin. Bow and arrow arts. Stationary and vulnerable, but the trade is sniping with optional chakra usage and other nasty surprises. Ninja Hawkeye? Don't count it out.
-[] Other - cool things that if you want I can think about and incorporate. I'm up for a lot of things. Just don't ask about...actually you can ask about "guns" tbh. I'll make it work, probably.

[] Seals - don't expect to see any results for a long time. However, patience is rewarded handsomely.

[] Other Unlisted Specialty - subject to author fiat. Naturally.

---

Ritsu's Stats - base values. These will increase as soon as you pick your specialty. You have 12 points to distribute. I strongly advise against min-maxing but I won't forbid it. What you pick will certainly have an effect on your specialty.

Ninjutsu:
Taijutsu:
Genjutsu:
Intelligence:

Speed:
Stamina:
Seal Speed:
Total: 12/80

As a guideline, anything that seems like it's going to be hard for a genin to learn is probably going to be ten times harder for a 19 year old tiny ninja dancer. If you're going to pick something that's going to be hard but with big results at the end, think long term and then act accordingly.

Also, assume I'm going to throw in something wacky because like I said in an earlier effortpost, everyone can get swole.

Episode 2.5: Word And Bond
An accelerated training program. The three of you had agreed to it in principle over the past month.

Ritsu steadily moves in three dimensions on top of the stream as it rains, dressed in her swimsuit. You stand on the water ahead of her, watching her bare feet splash against the surface of the water. Her breaths are steady and rhythmic. Hannah watches from behind her, making sure she's doing everything right.

Over the past few weeks you taught her all of the basics that were common to the major shinobi academies. Everything from chakra to fighting to weapons to strategy. How to incorporate shinobi standards into every day living. She was steady on her feet, steady in everything she did or tried. Steady was what you came to expect from her as a result. If it wasn't fast, or it wasn't the best, it was steady and even. And frankly, you liked that more than anything else.

Her speed and athleticism don't move up dramatically, but they do move up. She's not as good as an academy graduate, but her rate of growth after just a month of hard work is promising.

As for her specialty, it was decided that her focus would be on the social aspect. Infiltration and deception would work well as something to build on; her hostess training and general attitude made her well suited to that focus. Her best area is genjutsu and she rapidly improves on that front. She has solid misdirection options and makes clever use of subtle genjutsu to avoid trouble for a while, more than enough to stall or call for an assist against stronger opponents. Against normal humans, she's got practically no issues.

"That's enough."

"Yes, sir." Ritsu jumps from the water and lands on the shore, going to her knees and breathing deeply. As soon as she catches her breath, she turns to you for orders.

"We're taking the rest of the day off. You've done well, Ritsu."

"Thank you, sir. May I make a request?"

"Yup, go ahead."

"Could we have venison tonight, sir?"

"Sure. Hannah, what do we have on hand?"

"Certainly what our darling has requested," she says as she walks to your side. "A reward for a month's hard work is more than fair. We'll celebrate properly at the next spring we see."

"Great. We'll do that, then. Let's pack up and move out. No chance we miss another hot spring on the way down to town. They're all over, which only makes sense..."

"I've always wondered about the weather," Ritsu says as the three of you walk back to base camp. "And the climate in general, along with geography. Does it have to do with chakra?"

"We somehow don't have weather services in place after all these years, so I wouldn't know. But I have my suspicions that chakra has something to do with the localized weather patterns, and how climate is so radically different from place to place. Fire Country is constantly warm and sunny, but also has such balanced humidity and short term weather. Meanwhile Wind is really arid in a lot of places, so much that it's hard to make a living anywhere that's not in the general vicinity of the Sand or around oases. That puts a lot more strain on shinobi and it increases the weight of missions across the board...which is why it's been so devastating with all the cuts and their missions going to villages like Leaf," you reply.

"Even with the military power of the tailed beasts...I know historically that Sand has asked for arable land, but that proposal was rejected roundly...Wind Country territory is quite large, but they have no leverage since it's basically useless in terms of military and economic growth. Clans did gather to form the Hidden Sand, but out of pressure from the shift created by Senju and Uchiha. The environment is a strong buffer against invasion and infiltration, so it's rare for any village to waste resources trying to take over the Sand. That said, because they're in such bad economic straits, they're trivially easy to manipulate that way. There's even the possibility they would artificially induce a war in order to secure additional funding and spike the required number of missions."

You nod. "Good points."

Ritsu dries herself under the shelter of a tree. You and Hannah sit on logs. "I think that the aims of the shinobi systems were noble. What I don't believe for a moment is that Hashirama Senju intended for things to end up this way. He had a vision for peace and did his best to move towards it, even going as far as handing out the tailed beasts freely to other nations and forbidding children from entering the battlefield. We cannot blame him for every bad thing that has happened...even so, from the remaining records we have, we can see there was a fair bit of naivete in his actions. If the Hidden Leaf was the first of many great clan alliances, then they must also take responsibility for the political system that followed it. In the creation of a new nation, Hashirama and Tobirama after him left major political power in the hands of the daimyo. The daimyo control how villages function. If it were not so, we would not see the chaos of the Hidden Sand, nor would Orochimaru of the Three need to haggle so extensively with Rice Country in order to establish his orphanage and research facility."

"Do you feel the same way as Shiina?" Hannah asks.

"In principle. I think that Hashirama made a mistake in how he carried on. However, I don't necessarily think that shinobi should disappear. What's needed is evolution based on the times. I can't...exactly advocate for complete control by the Kage, no matter how nice they might seem. An intermediary, perhaps. Or something different. All I know is that the daimyo have caused much of the suffering we see here. If not by way of proxy wars, by general ignorance and being so out of touch with everything that happens."

"So not erasing the shinobi, but changing the system they exist on."

"Yes, sir. I simply don't have an idea of how to best do that."

"That's why we have discussions, to figure these things out. It's not something to be solved in a day...but you've shown off some ridiculous insight after just a month with that data. You might be some sort of genius, Ritsu."

"Oh...t-thank you, sir." She blushes brightly and plays with her hands. "Sorry...I'll get myself dressed."

"S'alright." True to her word, she quickly slips on her clothes and gets her pack on. You and Hannah do the same before you head out.

The group heads down towards the Hot Water Village again, and you run into another small natural hot spring where you stop for the night. The three of you celebrate the end of Ritsu's basic training with venison and freshly steamed vegetables. Hannah grabbed some sake a few weeks earlier and it gets passed around for sharing. Naturally as a talented social specialist, and former onsen worker, Ritsu can hold her liquor with ease. You enjoy yourselves in the hot pool until well past morning, then sleep in until the afternoon.

By the time you hit the village proper, it's been a month and four days.

"My Daddy works in construction. He was getting some pretty big projects back when I left...I guess it explains some things."

"Not good enough for me," you say.

"Not that it should be. But we will attempt to be civil," Hannah says. "Siblings?"

"My little sister, Kanna. She's about two years younger than me. It was the four of us, and then our other relatives and family...I couldn't say if we should expect any of them, ma'am."

It's definitely a tourist village, and ripe with opportunities for work of all kinds. Shinobi were effectively reduced to self-defense forces with the move towards pacifism, which might explain why some of them took on jobs posted by Yakuza. None of that excuses what they did to Ritsu...but at the same time, the mismanagement of funding, resources, and jobs would contribute to certain actions.

When Ritsu made that analysis a few days back, she was speaking from a place of brutal experience.

The walk along the finely paved roads brings you around the midtown area, and to a mildly secluded section of the village. Not quite a gated community, but close. You see a big, two storey house painted light blue, with big square windows at the bottom and circular ones at the top. There's a flower garden at the front, split by the brick path you walk on. A front porch big enough to hold dance parties on.

"My, my. You came from this?" Hannah asks Ritsu.

"I did, ma'am."

"And what, pray tell, did you do on your end to get yourself kicked out of this haven?"

"I...I promised to..."

"Darling?" Hannah stops and holds her close. "I'm sorry, I was too casual. Please forgive me."

"It's not your fault. You didn't mean anything by...I just...I think you should hear it from them."

"I understand."

You realize you're not going to like this one bit. Getting closer, you can hear that there are people inside, and one old man sitting on the porch by himself. He wears a tan shirt and matching pants high on his waist.

"Afternoon." He looks at Ritsu, eyes narrowing before he looks back at you. "Shoulda known. Guess the boyfriend sent his goons..."

"We're not yakuza," you say firmly. "But if you screw this up, I guarantee you'll wish that we were. Mind getting the man of the house for us? We'll wait here."

He slowly gets up, glaring at you as he walks inside. You wait a minute or two before someone else pushes open the door and emerges. A woman with light brown hair, a presumably slim figure, and a white dress that nearly sweeps the ground beneath her. Her lips are pressed into a thin line as she tries to keep her composure. You wonder if your anger is already showing on your face.

Hannah puts a hand on your lower back and moves to your side. Her eyes look you over and you nod, letting her step forward.

"Your garden is lovely. I quite enjoyed it on the long walk up your finely constructed path. It must have taken quite a bit of money to prepare, but you can't have your husband wasting time on do it yourself endeavours, can you?"

"I suppose not," the woman replies. "Who might you be here on behalf of?"

"Ourselves. We've requested a meeting with the master of the house, in regards to our companion here. Her name is Ritsu Tanaka. Any relation?"

"I am her mother. Mariko."

"Hm. There is a notable resemblance. I...am curious as to why, when we made one simple request, we were not honoured? Surely it makes sense not to anger guests who you may suspect are in league with the yakuza?"

"I wanted to verify your claims."

"Verify. Yes, a likely story. You insult both of us with the garbage that spills from your mouth."

"Don't you-"

Hannah steps into her face, making her flinch.

"You are going to invite us in like normal people. Then, you will fetch your beloved husband from the backyard, and have him meet us in the guest area."

"I-I will do no s-"

"No, you will. I promise you will. Go on, now. I don't like to be kept waiting."

Mariko's breathing is heavy as she backs away from Hannah. She opens the door and the three of you file in.

"Kanna, come here."

"Mommy, what is it? I'm sorta-" Another brown haired girl, taller than Ritsu but much more energetic. Her earrings sparkle in the light, and she wears a frilly blouse paired with a knee length skirt. "Ritsu...? Big...big sis...?"

"..."

"Mom...Mommy, what's happening? You said that...no, you told me that she...I..."

"There's no time for it, Kanna."

The younger girl steadies her trembling hands and holds back her tears. "...I'll...tend to our guests. Please follow me."

"Thank you. I'll get your father and we can sort out this mess quickly."

Kanna leads you to what you presume is the common room, with all manner of couches and chairs in the area.

"W-would you like tea?" she asks as you sit down.

"Do you have any coffee on hand?" you ask.

"Yes, sir. I can make you some."

"Nothing for me," Hannah says.

"And you...m-miss?"

"Water, please. One cube of ice," Ritsu says quietly.

"I'll be back shortly." Kanna sniffles just as quietly and leaves you. You hear hushed, angry words go back and forth between two people before a new face emerges.

You estimate he has about two or three inches on you. Big, muscular frame under that dress shirt and pants. His hair grows down to his shoulders, dark brown. He stares you down before casting a casual glance at Ritsu.

You're also well aware of the sword in his right hand, and so is everyone else on the team. Dumb. What is this supposed to be?

"I have to wonder just how stupid you are," Hannah says out loud.

"Excuse me?" the man rumbles.

"I am wondering if you have some sort of mental deficiency," Hannah says again. "For you to come out here and threaten guests with a blade, guests who have come here with your eldest daughter in tow. What the fuck are you trying to do?"

"You listen here, b-"

"Choose your next words carefully," you warn. "I told the old man at the front door that you'll wish we were yakuza if you get this wrong. You can hold onto your piece of steel like a safety blanket if you want, just take it easy. Please."

"Please do as he says, Daddy." Kanna returns with your requests, handing you your coffee and Ritsu her water. Their eyes meet for a long moment before Kanna pulls away, retreating to the seat on her father's right. Mariko sits on his left, trembling hands in her lap. Then you become aware of more footsteps, and more people crowding the room.

"This is what we're doing," you mutter.

"Absurd. I've never come upon a level of stupidity such as this," Hannah grumbles audibly. "Little wonder our Ritsu had to run."

"Our Ritsu?" Mariko asks, incredulous.

Hannah glares back at her. "I didn't fucking stutter."

"We're here to have a chat with the Tanakas, and I'm assuming a bunch of you here are relatives and friends or whatever," you say with a sigh. "Just...if you're thinking about throwing down, don't. I can kill all of you in an instant and she can too. Pretty sure just Ritsu can murder the lot of you on her own now. We're not yakuza. We just want to talk. Far as you know, I'm Zeke and my best friend over there is Dani. Mariko, Kanna, and the man of the house is...?"

"Keiji."

"Keiji. Good. We're on slightly better footing now."

"If you're not yakuza, what the fuck are you doing here with my daughter?"

"We've got shit to say," you shoot back. "Specifically Ritsu."

"Why don't you ask her, then? I'm sure she's fed you-"

"Stop! Daddy, stop it! Stop it!" Kanna screams. "They came to us to see what our side of the story was! They came to see what really happened! And I want to know too! I want to know! You told me that my big sis was dead, that the yakuza used her as a flesh doll until she killed herself! You told me all of that, and it was a lie! The past two years..."

Kanna breaks down into sobs. Ritsu is shaking.

"We'll get the truth one way or another," you say. "Up to you."

E2 Postlude: Scar Tissue
>>> The Illuminators

Episode 2 Postlude: Scar Tissue

"Joshua, sir. Please...let me do this."

"Ritsu. Are you sure?"

She nods slowly. "I'm sure. I need to bring this to an end, by my own hand. What I'm about to do will hurt, but...it's necessary. I feel like it's something necessary."

"Go ahead, then. We've got your back."

"Thank you."

You notice it right away. Her posture shifts, and the look in her eyes changes. They immediately become steely, giving off that intense glow that you remembered from the first few encounters with her. It was a trick of the mind, yes, but one created entirely by her force of will. You can see her taking everything in before she even parts her lips to speak.

This looks like it's going to be brutal.

"A lot has happened," she starts evenly. "Coming home wasn't something that I thought to do, or expected to happen. It was a miracle that brought me to this point. I almost did die, for real. I thought a lot about killing myself, about ending it all just to escape the terror that I was wrapped in. I...I forgot about all of you. Kanna, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry that I betrayed your memory. You would never want such a thing..."

"I...you're not at fault," she sniffles. "I can't imagine what you might have gone through, sis."

"Nor would I want you to." She slowly brings her attention to her mother. "So much has happened. I can imagine living with pain, but not being a mother. It was a close call, I think. I had it in the back of my head that he wanted to get me pregnant."

Keiji is like a rock, unmoving.

"You had to go through so much, Mommy. I'm sorry. I wish I could take away your pain." Ritsu slowly gets to her feet and walks over to where her mother sits, getting down onto her knees. She takes one of Mariko's trembling hands and holds it against her cheek. "Mommy, it's okay. I'm alive. I made it."

Mariko says nothing, nerves starting to consume her.

"When a mother has family around her, family to protect and provide for, she often has to make hard decisions. Terribly hard ones. Shouldn't you be pitied, Mommy? For the hard choices, the sacrifices you had to make over and over? I remember you told us about how hard you worked before you met Daddy. How you pulled yourself up out of the poverty you used to live in. How you really, truly became someone. Letting that slip away...that's not fair. It couldn't be fair." Ritsu pauses and let out a breath. "I remember working in the restaurant. It was nice. I liked serving people, helping them enjoy themselves. Did you know I was working at an onsen the past two years? It's where I met Zeke and Dani. My boss was a nice woman, though she did love smoking..."

"I..."

"It's okay, Mommy. Be calm. Hm, the guy didn't even register to me as yakuza, or else I would have taken more care in rejecting him. I realize now that I'm bisexual. Funny how we discover simple things like that in times of crisis, but that's the power of life experience. But I'm getting off topic...I rejected him quite a few times before giving in, and that's when I found out what he was. Tetsuda..." A scowl forms on her face as she says the name. "He didn't give off the distinguished aura of the other yakuza, which was a sign on its own. But then, distinguished wasn't a word to attribute to him after he drugged me..."

"Wh..." Mariko's eyes shift to Keiji for a moment before going back to Ritsu, who is looking up at her impassively.

The sinking feeling you had before is getting stronger.

"He threatened everyone. You, Daddy, Kanna...and me, most of all. I endured for months until I couldn't anymore. And that was when I told all of you. I talked about choices...you had one to make. Chase your firstborn daughter into an abyss and lose everything in the process, or stay on this side and protect whatever you had. It's a heavy choice. You had so much more to lose from going after me. And so much to live for, so much to hold onto. You had to protect everything you worked so hard for. It wasn't that you hated me...it was that you loved what you had more. I understood that I wasn't going to be protected. That it was my problem, my responsibility. And because I still loved you, I wanted to protect you. I thought that if I ran away to a place you didn't know about, a place that you couldn't reach...you wouldn't need an alibi. You wouldn't need to lie."

"You...ran away to protect us?" Kanna asks, her voice cracking.

"I did. I tried. I tried so hard, but I...made a mistake, I think. I don't really know what I did wrong...but he found me. I had just started my job at the onsen, and within the month...he found me. I was scared. I didn't know what to do, I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare. I broke apart, and I...I let him have his way with me. He would come up to the town whenever he was free, and hire ninja as bodyguards." Ritsu lets go of her mother's hand. "Part of the story you told Kanna was right, Mommy. I was a whore. A living doll that was passed around and battered and abused. Real dolls are lucky, though. They don't have to carry memories."

"Ritsu...I..."

"Mommy. What was it that happened? I just want to know why...why you all had to cut ties with me so suddenly. Why you told my beloved Kanna that I was already dead? How come? Mommy?"

"I...I had to stop her...if she...she kept going she would find you..."

Ritsu tilts her head slightly. "Find me? I don't understand, Mommy."

The guilt is seeping into Mariko. She trembles and sniffles loudly. "F-find that you were...alive and try to bring you back...so I...I told her that and..."

"To keep her safe from the yakuza. To convince everyone that I really was dead, so that they would stop looking for me. To make it look like it was my bad decision, my choice that I ran away. It was a tragic accident, a young girl who went too deep into the waters of adulthood and never surfaced. I understand. I get it. It only makes sense to have a cover story. But..."

Her eyes bore into Mariko.

"...it wasn't your idea. Was it?"

"I...uh, I..."

"Please, Mommy. Please tell me the truth," Ritsu pleads. "Please, I want to know. I just...want to know..."

"Keiji...and I..."

"Daddy's suggestion. Daddy is the head of the house." Ritsu pats her mother's hand. "I know. You only had one option. How could you throw yourself on a sword for me, someone who was so foolish and unrepentant?"

"Ritsu, I...please, I didn't-"

"Mommy. Be calm. Be calm. Relax...now think," she says soothingly, rubbing her mother's hand, "think back to what happened. Think back to why Daddy would make you make such a hard, unbearable choice. Think hard, Mommy."

Mariko starts sobbing. "Please...don't make me..."

"I believe in you, Mommy."

"Ritsu. Stop harassing her-"

"Don't you interrupt now, Daddy," Kanna says fiercely. "I won't let you interfere anymore. You made up that story for Mom to tell me, and because I was young and scared, I believed it right away. I spread that lie far and wide. I poisoned the well. Even if I didn't realize it, I was part of Ritsu-nee's suffering. I have to know what happened, and I won't let you stop the truth coming out."

"Do as she says and stand down," you follow. "You've only got reason to worry if you've done something ridiculous."

"Are you okay, Mommy? Can you continue?" Ritsu asks gently.

"I...we..."

"We what? What happened? Mommy? What happened?"

You've been following the chain of evidence. Kanna was fed a lie that she ended up spreading to the village, even if it was just that Ritsu had died tragically. A blanket statement that kept people from looking for her, from seeking out the truth. What truth that was, was...

"Oh, fucking hell," you mutter under your breath.

"Darling?" Hannah asks. "What's wrong?"

"We should have asked ourselves why they were expecting us," you say.

Hannah pauses before you see her eyes fill with absolute fury.

"You...son of a fucking bitch," she spits at Keiji. "You absolute fucking trash."

"We...knew," Mariko chokes out.

"Knew? What did you know?" Kanna asks, frightened by what's going on. "Mommy, what did you and Daddy know?"

"The contracts...the lucrative, life changing contracts...the fact that work was work...everything," Ritsu says sadly. "I was the one. The sacrifice."

"I don't understand! Ritsu-nee, I don't understand!"

"A month before Tetsuda found me...I sent out what was now an ill-advised message."

"Where?!"

Ritsu closes her eyes. "To this very home."

"I...still don't..."

Mariko is clutching her head, crying openly. "I'm sorry! I did it! I let it happen! I'm sorry! Aaaa...aaa!"

"I didn't think about it until recently. It never crossed my mind how Tetsuda would find me, fifty kilometers away from home, in a small tourist town most people would simply fly through. I was too scared out of my mind to consider it. But it's clear now what happened."

"Tetsuda...the yakuza blackmailed Daddy..." Kanna mentally walks back the statement. Hannah is still seething and you grab her hand to calm her down. "Cover...sacrifice?"

"Are you too much of a coward to say it?" you ask Keiji. His grip tightens on the sword, but he says nothing.

"Calling him a coward implies some sort of humanity on his part," Hannah growls. "And that's quite a reach as far as I'm concerned."

"You snot-nosed bitch-!"

"Was it worth it, Daddy?"

He stands in place, looking down at Ritsu.

"What?"

"Was it worth it? Did you achieve your dreams? Did you get to do at least some of the things you wanted to do?"

"Yakuza...contracts? Daddy?" Kanna asks.

"Money...so much money...all we had to do was...was...he wanted her..."

Kanna's voice becomes distant as she looks at her mother. "Ya...kuza? The boss was chasing...and sis...he wanted sis...you let him rape her? And then after she..."

"Yes, Kanna. Yes. The wolf was let loose to gobble me up. To please the bosses. For self-preservation," Ritsu says.

"Daddy...let them hurt you? Daddy caused this? Mommy and Daddy...the yakuza? The mobsters...my sister? You let them...rape my sister? You let them...let them..."

Tears roll down her face before she clutches her stomach in agony. She drops to her hands and knees and her cheeks bulge before she vomits loudly.

"We should have figured it out much earlier," you say. "You assumed we were yakuza goons for some reason, and kept that assumption even after we told you otherwise. That didn't make sense at all...unless you were expecting your daughter to be with the yakuza the entire time, alive. You wouldn't, couldn't know of your daughter's status after you cut her off. But that mistake she made...trusting you...it was a way back into the good graces of the impulsive yakuza who was pissed that his prize catch got away. You leaked her location after she thought she was safe. And I can't confirm it, but...I'm sure you were getting something from Tetsuda on the side."

"You didn't act shocked at Ritsu's arrival. None of you did," Hannah follows. "Because you knew that she was out there, being visited by Tetsuda regularly. As long as nobody else knew, you could keep your prestige and money. You could continue making the yakuza happy. Because it was those contracts that made you rich...those generous contracts that involved twisting rules and regulations as much as possible before they broke. You cut her off to let go of responsibility. And the husband lied to his wife about the first encounter so that she would easily take his side. Your lives were never in danger. Only your lifestyles."

Ritsu cleans her sister's mouth and helps calm her down. You watch the sad scene with no sympathy for the father or the distraught mother.

"Trash...that's a good way to put it."

Hannah squeezes your hand this time and nods.

"Kanna. I'm sorry. I died a long time ago."

Ritsu stands up and pulls her shirt over her head. Even the peanut gallery properly reacts to the scars that cover her small frame.

"But I'm reborn. Thanks to these two lovely people. They are my family now. You will always be my beloved little sister, but they are the family that I will live with from now on. None of this ever happened. I don't exist here."

"..." Kanna nods from her seat on the floor. She holds her arms out for a hug and Ritsu kneels down to receive it. They embrace for what feels like a long time, but must have been far too short for either of them.

"I love you, Kanna. I will always be with you."

"I love you, Ritsu. I'll always love you." Kanna looks at you and Hannah. "Thank you for saving her. She belongs to you now. Make her strong. Strong enough to change this world we live in."

"We will," you assure her.

"Ritsu. Listen," Keiji says as he puts a hand on her shoulder. She looks up at him, expressionless. "Things have happened. But we're still your parents."

"No, you're not."

She brushes his hand aside and pulls her shirt back over her head.

"You're avoiding the scars. Are you going to acknowledge them?"

"I don't care about the scars," he says, trying to be considerate.

Her expression changes to that of pity. "Of course you don't. You don't see them, because I'm still 'beautiful' on the inside. Because they're just 'a part of your body' and that doesn't measure your character. You don't see the scars, Tanaka-san, and you don't see me. You stopped seeing me a long time ago."

"R-Ritsu...I..."

"Mariko."

The woman's face twists into an unreadable expression.

"Don't waste your words on me. Enjoy your spoils." Ritsu turns to you. "I don't have anything else to say."

"We don't either," you say with a look towards Hannah, who nods in agreement. "Let's get out of here."

"Associate with trash too much and you'll take on its smell. Oh, and by the way?" Hannah says, walking up to Keiji. She grabs his sword by the blade and snaps it apart. "Try investing in decent metalwork." She lets the half in her hand drop to the floor in front of him before walking off.

"See you assholes never," you say. "Kanna, stay safe."

"I...I will. Thank you."

You wave over your shoulder and head out after the girls.

---

"Was that alright for you?" Hannah asks Ritsu. It's been a few hours since your visit to the Tanaka house, and you're heading towards Hannah's contact just outside of the village.

"It was...therapeutic. I think I was a bit numb to it all before, but now...now I think I feel a bit of peace. It will always hurt, remembering how little I meant to the people who gave me life. But I'm able to deal with it now. The training...helped a lot. Certainly."

"We're not shinobi. We don't have any obligation to shove things down or repress memories," you say. "Things like that only whip up monsters in the end, anyways."

"That much is true. I'm alright, I'm just figuring out how exactly to properly process everything. Discovering all of that just...was a bit surreal. Less hatred than this overwhelming sense of pity for them. God, how hard could it have been? What did they have to do to themselves to justify that? I thought about applying some blame to myself for not seeing this coming, but I can't do it. I can't. It's all on them. Ridiculous..."

"If you need anything, just let us know."

She gives you a nod. "I will. If there's something I don't quite get, I'll ask."

"You were quite amazing, though. We were right to have you specialize in social skills...you dismantled that woman with ease," Hannah says proudly. "All of that hard work paid off, I doubt you would have gotten much out of them by simply appealing to their emotions."

"I don't think so either. My only regret is what it did to Kanna." Ritsu nods to herself. "But she's strong. I know she is. And she'll figure out her path."

"Hope she does it soon so she can get out of that hellhole," you reply. "Anyways...from what I remember, we're almost at our destination."

"We're here, actually." Hannah stops in front of the open lot that you intended to pass through. You're on the outskirts of the village, where more trees are popping up as civilization starts to fade out. The spot you're looking at was developed once in the past, but has been left to return to nature for the time being.

"Let's begin." She makes a series of seals before stretching a hand forward and snapping her fingers. The air ahead ripples a bit before settling down. "Follow me."

You and Ritsu follow her in a line as she walks forward and through the air itself, disappearing. As you follow, you see that the empty lot is replaced by a house with a high fence and a neatly trimmed front yard. There are flowers everywhere.

"Wild," you mumble. "Guess we don't have to worry about security too much."

"There's plenty of paranoia to be had, apparently. Let's head in."

The home is a decent size, eastern in scope with a low entrance and floors. You head forward and cast a glance at Ritsu before noticing she's standing stock still for some reason.

"Ritsu? You okay?"

"Oh hell," Hannah groans. "Get out of there, you idiot."

"Nuh-uh~ Not with that lousy attitude~!" a soft, playful voice calls back.

What the hell. Was there some sort of genjutsu you missed? Ritsu's voice has completely changed, and her facial expressions aren't the same either. Her eyes are also...square? She has square pupils, glowing green. She didn't have those before, you know that much.

"Relax," Hannah assures you. "It's just a bout of insanity from one of our prospective partners. What do you want, woman?"

"Nothing from you. Him," she says, pointing to you with Ritsu's arm. "Pay the membership fee."

"Membership?"

"We like to think of ourselves as an exclusive club~ So, if you're interested in talking to us, you gotta pay the pipers! A small fee of five million ryo."

"Five million?" you parrot. That's a lot for just entry to a clubhouse, no matter how prestigious.

"Stop harassing him," Hannah says.

"You don't get in if you don't pay the toll. And...I'll hang on to this cutie for myself if you're not quick. Time's a-wastin'~"

"..." Hannah didn't mention this. So it's customized for you, then. But an entry fee...that wouldn't be a useful barrier for someone who already had their location hidden inside of some time-space field.

The ghost or whoever's in there is having Ritsu rock back and forth on her heels, while Hannah grumbles about 'eccentricities'.

This is very obviously a test. Possibly with multiple right answers.

---

[] Pay the fee, as a sign of good faith. You're good for it, and it's a small dent on your finances either way.

[] Refuse to pay, on principle of refusing extortion. No way you're getting bullied like this.

[] Ask to speak to the person running things directly. It's bold, but it's also to the point.

[] Write in.

Special Abilities

Own Tempo
- Ritsu's ability to stay calm in heated situations. Her survival instincts kick in, and she takes note of everything around her in order to properly assess the situation. This manifests in a once per segment option to think her way out of a dangerous situation, at the cost of offensive options afterwards until the situation is resolved.
Jutsu

Body Flicker
- by using the Body Flicker Technique, the user can move short to long distances at an almost untraceable speed. To an observer, it appears as if the user has teleported. It is accomplished by using chakra to temporarily vitalise the body and move at extreme speeds. The amount of chakra required depends on the overall distance and elevation between the user and the intended destination.

Body Replacement
- The instant before they are to be struck by an attack, the user replaces themselves with a block of wood or something similar. Because the attack does hit something, opponents may briefly believe that they've successfully struck the user. But this is merely an optical illusion and opponents will quickly notice what's happened. If users are fast enough, they can use this brief lapse in the opponent's attentions to stage a counterattack.

Transformation/Henge
- this technique is most often used to disguise the user as another person, but they can also turn into an animal, plant, or inanimate object.

Clone
- for this technique, users create one or more afterimages of themselves to move alongside them. Unlike most other clone techniques, these afterimages have no substance and thus are incapable of damaging opponents. Opponents can identify clones from their original through careful observation, as clones won't cast shadows, crush grass, kick up dust, etc.

Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
- This technique subjects targets to visions of their greatest fear, regardless of whether or not they're aware that they're afraid of it. This "fear" can be something that the target is actually scared of or merely the one image that they least want to see.

Sly Mind Affect
- This technique causes a target or targets to, while walking in what they believe to be a straight direction, instead walk in circles. As is typical for genjutsu, the targets are unlikely to notice that they're doing this, causing them to waste time and energy as they wander about.

Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings
- This technique layers an illusion over a location, causing it to look like a different location. Because of how wide an area the illusion can be placed over, that in turn makes it easy to trick others: any who enter the area will be affected by the illusion and see the false location.

Earth Release: Earth Wall
- The user converts chakra in their body into an earthen material that they spit from their mouth; the more skilled the user, the greater the volume of earth can then be created. The earth quickly piles up into a defensive wall, blocking incoming attacks.

Earth Release: Underground Projection Fish
- This technique allows its user to silently emerge from an earthen surface, moving as a fish does underwater. As or after they've emerged, users are often well-placed to perform assassinations or guerrilla attacks.

Explosion Release: Harbinger of Freedom
A technique Yukari copied from a Hidden Rock shinobi long ago. Exists as a technique seal for Ritsu's use. The user creates orbs of explosive chakra on their finger tips and sends them out. They are highly versatile, being able to be used as time-bombs or proximity mines. The user can also detonate the orbs with a snap of their fingers. Presently, the high chakra cost means that Ritsu can use this only twice per engagement.

A girl from an upper-middle class family, she was forced to run away from home. A yakuza boss was hunting and harassing her, and her family abandoned her in fear of their status being ruined by the incoming scandal. Even as she fled, she was again found by the young boss and subjected to horrific treatment as punishment. Desperate and hoping for one last chance, she agreed to sell her existence to Joshua and Hannah in exchange for revenge against the yakuza. What she received in the end was more than she could have hoped; not only freedom from her oppressor, but a new life, a chance to prove herself, and two people who cared for her unconditionally.

Joshua West, young master - the man she loves and admires without restraint. After saving her life and giving her a purpose, she devotes herself to doing her best in all things for his sake. His constant encouragement is fuel to her fire. She treats him like a father figure implicitly.

Hannah Kuiper, young mistress - the woman she loves and admires without restraint. Hannah's warmth and kindness are another inspiration and something that Ritsu strives to replicate. There's also a bit of sexual tension between them, to the benefit of both parties.

Yukari Uzumaki - a trusted acquaintance and fixer. Expert in sealing arts and has her finger on the pulse of the shinobi world at all times.

Senna Egami - Yukari's companion and an elite infiltrator. Can access the spirit world with jutsu via her bloodline limit, the Yuureigan, as well as perform related spectral activities.

Episode 3: Brave New World

"So it's like that, then. Alright."

"Made your decision?" the person inside of Ritsu asks.

"Yeah. Take me to whoever's running the show."

"I don't think you-"

"Your opinion doesn't matter. You can take me to your boss, or we can get a little less civil. Pick one," you say firmly.

Her expression changes as she realizes how serious you are. With a nod, she walks ahead of you and slides open the front entrance. The three of you walk along the smooth wooden floors and past multiple rooms before stopping in front of a specific one. Another thin wooden door is pulled open and you head inside, noting that the room is massive and takes up way more space than you know it should. Has to be another time-space thing.

"Boss~! He said he wanted to speak with you right away. Brushed me off when I asked about the entrance fee. Totally rude."

"Is that so...intriguing."

A woman pops up from behind the tall counter in front of you, walking around to the front so that she can look at you properly. Her hair is a rich red, long, wispy, and flowing down to her waist. A pair of goggles is around her neck as she wears a patterned shirt and faded pants. Her eyes are golden yellow and carry a soft glow; there are dark, pronounced lines beneath them, indicating that she had a habit of skipping sleep.

But the most interesting thing about this woman is her arms. Laid over her pale skin is an elaborate series of sealing formulas, wrapped around each of her arms like dark sleeves and going downward, only stopping at the very tips of her fingers.

Your attention returns to Ritsu, who has slid down to her knees after your 'escort' separated themselves from her. The shade materializes into a young woman with green overalls, taller than anyone else in the room; you guess she's about...160 cm, at the least. Her hair is about as long as the other woman's, forest green and voluminous as it reaches near her waist. A few bundles sweep in front of her face, and she gives your group a kind-looking smile. Those eyes are the same as before, green with unique square-shaped pupils.

"Sorry about earlier~," she says in that soft tone of hers. "OPSEC, you know?"

"Could have been nicer about it," you reply with a huff. "It's not a big deal, though. No hard feelings."

"You're pretty scary when you're mad...Mister West."

"You searched her mind, then...pervert," Hannah scolds. She helps Ritsu up, who nods that she's alright. "Then you know everything about him. On one hand, it saves us time. On the other, it's a dirty fucking trick and I should fry you for it."

The green-haired woman tilts her head slightly. "You wouldn't do something that evil, Miss Reaper. It wouldn't make the boss lady happy."

"Happiness is lower down on the list of my priorities," the red-head says. Her voice is firmer in comparison. "As I said before, this is an intriguing set of events. Most people - of which there aren't many to begin with - would rather pay the fee in order to join the club. You, much like Miss Kuiper, saw no value in it and decided to go straight to the source. No wrong answer, technically speaking, but..."

"But?" you ask.

"Hm. Respect is a resource hard won and easily lost. The difference between a client and a prospective partner? Vast." She nods to Hannah. "If the Gold Reaper brought you here, you're sure to be good people either way...but sweetening the pot like this is never a bad thing. I do wonder, though..."

"Shall I give you my report, mistress~?"

"Oh, yes. Go ahead."

"The young lady I connected with just now is Ritsu Tanaka, nineteen, former civilian. Got herself a crash course in shinobi skills about a month ago. Surprisingly talented, genjutsu type and social specialty. Oh, and speaking of perverts..."

Ritsu blinks.

"She's got a super big-"

"Crush on me. I know," Hannah says casually. "Just report relevant info, for everyone's sake."

"Go on, Senna," her boss follows.

Senna pouts briefly. "Yes'm. The absolutely snackalicious kokoahito over here is none other than Joshua West."

You ignore the flattery and note the red-head's eyes brighten with interest. "So you're his grandson. I knew I remembered that face from somewhere, but I couldn't place where for whatever reason. Knowing that you are indeed kokoahito, what with the speech patterns and all, I might have found out eventually...but this is an interesting discovery. Where did you meet the Reaper, if I might ask?"

"Out in Hidden Cloud," you respond. Your 'secret' was spilled pretty easily, but Hannah did say they were at the top of the game when it came to intel. You don't feel any way about it. Hannah trusts these people enough to do a lot of important business with them.

"So you found the scroll?" she asks Hannah.

"We did. It was in the area we estimated...there's really nothing left of the old place, though. Some kids used it as a playground and stumbled on our target, so we followed that lead." Hannah produces the scroll and hands it to the other woman. "Usual fee?"

"Mm...hold that thought a moment. I'll have it opened right now." She heads back behind the counter and sets the scroll on it, then presses a hand against the seal itself. A few seconds later, the red band evaporates into smoke and the scroll can be properly opened. "Nothing complicated. No traps. This was just above routine security; it wasn't meant to be found out in the field." Hannah opens up the scroll and starts to read it while the red-head gives you her attention again. "Apologies for not introducing myself right away."

"It happens," you say with a shrug.

"My name is Yukari Uzumaki. My mischievous partner over there is Senna Egami."

"Hello~"

"We do much in the way of intelligence gathering and offer our services to a very select group of clientele. Occasionally, we also do various types of field work, including sealing, which I happen to be adept at. The Uzumaki clan diaspora would leave many with the assumption that there are all sorts of sealing masters and mistresses around the continent, but that isn't the case. Assimilation, especially when it's forced, does things to what are normally accessible skills. Many hid their talents and sealed them away, no pun intended. As an orphan, I was inclined to make use of what I had at my disposal, and that strengthened my skills."

"You survived the destruction of Whirlpool, then," you conclude.

"Survived, yes. That's more apt than you realize, Mister West." Her eyes narrow slightly. "Enemies of the so-called free world. For merely existing, it seems. Not even the advent of the shinobi system could save us from what would come next. Allying with Hashirama Senju, being cousins to the Senju, family even. None of it mattered. Slaughtered like wild animals." She sighs. "Pardon my ramblings."

"Since our little sweetheart Senna has already looked into our situation, I might as well tell you myself. We ran into someone who claimed he was Madara Uchiha. He was working in concert with Akatsuki," Hannah says.

"Then those small rumblings did ring true," Yukari mutters. "But you couldn't verify, could you?"

"He used what looked like a visual art, some kind of time-space jutsu that allows warping from place to place and even moving people out of the physical plane itself. He claimed that he talked to my grandfather. Had some sort of disagreement, or something," you say to her.

"Many people did. I did meet him by chance, once...he left an impression on me. I wondered about the state of this world, about what I could possibly change...about what was possible, and what I could make possible with my own hands. Seals, formulas, all coming together for a purpose. Liberation was my first thought. Free the world from the system in place. But then I thought about it further, and questioned my own ideals. Perhaps there was something that I was missing...hm. In any case, I shouldn't make you stand the entire time. Come."

You follow her behind the counter and into the rest of the room, where you see a round table on a carpet surrounded by soft chairs that sit on the floor. The light and bright colours stand out against the clean white surfaces that make up everything else. You sit and get comfortable as Senna prepares refreshments in the background.

Hannah plops herself into your lap and shows you the scroll. "We have our lead, darling. Fire Country is our next stop. Right in the vicinity of the Leaf."

"Sounds alright. You did say things were weird in Leaf, though."

"Just a bit. We don't have to get them involved, but caution is preferred. Then again...there's nothing wrong with some spice in our lives."

"The Leaf is preparing for the Chuunin Examination," Yukari points out. "It happens every six months, but all things considered, this iteration is a much bigger deal than others before it."

"I've heard about the Chuunin Exams, but I still don't know much about them," Ritsu says. "The shinobi of Hot Springs often came back in a timely manner, with not much in the way of injury, if any. However, I did hear many second and third hand accounts of the brutality that went on at the exams."

"That's only normal," Yukari responds. She nods her thanks as Senna hands her a cup of tea. "Hot Springs is a pacifist village, and their shinobi are primarily promoted on local recommendation, rather than based on anything from the exams because of their role as self-defense forces. When they go, it's merely to show solidarity with the other villages and promote harmony. The Chuunin Exams are, simply put, replacements for actual war."

"Do you mean what they call war games?"

"No. War games, or even live fire exercises, never involve human targets. These examinations do. It's as I said, carefully controlled war between nations. The structure is indeed meant to test whether the participants have the qualities necessary to become chuunin, that is to shoulder greater responsibility and lead teams or entire squadrons. They also serve to strengthen relations between villages and nations, moreso in the current format."

"Used to be that they had them internally," you say. "Changed after the Third War, where children got reintroduced to the battlefield because regular forces were depleted. They're trying really hard to stop something like that from happening again, and the Third Hokage was and is one of the biggest voices for that initiative."

"So...the reality of it is that people really do die," Ritsu says.

"Yes. The strong survive and the weak are pushed aside, supposedly. With the public face of these exams, they serve as showcases and opportunities for bragging rights, since the shinobi show off their accumulated skills and the daimyo are present to take credit," Hannah replies. She leans back and lays her head on your shoulder. "In many cases it seems pointless, but as said by Yukari, those life and death situations do bring out the best or the worst in participants. They show off who really is suited to move up in the shinobi world. Whether that actually matters is another story entirely."

"The examinations also serve as a sizable source of revenue for the host nations," Yukari continues. "The last portion is always presented as a tournament where shinobi fight one on one on a prepared battlefield."

"I don't quite understand," Ritsu says after taking a sip of her tea. "If there's a final tournament, then why wouldn't Hot Springs want to drive towards that point?"

"Because it ultimately doesn't matter who wins or loses the tournament in terms of promotion. Winning is a display of superiority and earns the represented village bragging rights. It also generates money by way of gambling and the like...but the promotions are not based on merit, rather recommendation. The Kage and other important officials watch the tournament and decide on a number of factors for advancement, which include decision making, ingenuity, awareness, and so on," Yukari explains. "That means that someone who loses but displays the necessary qualities of a chuunin leader can be promoted, while a winner who uses nothing but brute force or gets by on luck may not be. Results are not the be-all-end-all. And yes, nations can easily promote whoever they want whenever they want, but it looks better on its face if someone who displays great command in front of the many nations participating is moved to a senior position. It makes the other leaders comfortable. Likewise, even if a village's champion isn't promoted, the various nobles may have an eye out for the village that can produce strong shinobi in general."

"There's a lot going on, both on stage and behind it," Senna points out as she sits. "But as Yukari was saying in the beginning, this is a particularly important set of exams. It's the first year of eligibility for some of the most talked about talent in generations, and the recent tensions make this crucial for maintaining peace. The Leaf has a lot of firepower and strong rookies that are participating this year as the host nation. Sand is desperate for contracts and is sending their most powerful asset to the exams, Gaara of the Desert. He's the Kazekage's youngest son and the jinchuuriki of the One-Tail. From all the data we have, he's never been touched or wounded in battle. Cloud will be sending people up front as a display of force, and Rock will be trying to match them. Mist is, as usual, a place we have no real reading on. They're likely to send a few participants to keep up appearances. We also have the minor villages to consider, such as the Hidden Sound that was formed relatively recently by Orochimaru of the Three, and the Hidden Rain which has always been secretive."

"It's looking to be a lot heavier than normal," you say.

"Yes. Considering all of the recent aggression and hostilities, usually villages in these kinds of positions would decline invitations to such events. While it sounds good to those clamoring for peaceful times, it can also lead to a much bigger series of problems," Yukari replies.

"You mean to say that the Kage are all going to be present at the exams," Hannah concludes. "Increased security aside, that is a major issue. It makes it easy for any meddler to stoke tensions higher. And if we enter the area, Joshua especially...well."

"Starting a war on reputation alone?" Ritsu asks.

"Wars have started and ended on that much," Yukari says. "Keep in mind that...Joshua, if I may?" You nod and she continues. "Joshua is the grandson of the man who brought terror to the military force of an entire continent. He was as close to unstoppable as one could get, and although many refused to entertain the possibility, he very well could outstrip the power of the Sage of Six Paths. The major powers all know of Joshua's exile from the Iron Country, and that he's been wandering from place to place. The possibility is there for him to follow in his grandfather's footsteps...some may seek to exterminate that potential, while others might seek to use it for their own ends. And Hannah...the simple threat there is that the Gold Reaper has been hired by someone - never mind who - to cause chaos by assassinating a Kage or some other diplomat."

"Mm. So it goes. I freely sleep in the bed that I've made," Hannah says casually, snuggling into you. "'Tis why the compromise of the usual networks is so concerning. The Uchiha, the Hyuuga, the Aburame, the Yamanaka...the Nara are a threat on their own, too. Going into that territory with just henge to fall back on is the same as walking around in my underwear. Liberating, yes. But not terribly smart."

"But on the other hand...we may very well be needed to prevent tragedy," Ritsu says. "The existence of the masked man, called Madara Uchiha. If he could identify Joshua as a threat on his own and locate him like that, what's to say that he won't use that threat himself as bait? Or that he won't cause chaos himself? Or that he hasn't been slowly pushing these leaders into this scenario? It's not merely to speculate...I think that having the Five Kage all insert themselves into this event at once for little reason other than posturing is a clear and present danger. Saving the world isn't something I believe we should take on freely, but I don't like the idea of sitting on this information and doing nothing with it."

"You think it's worth the risk?" you ask Ritsu.

"More than worth it. Call it an educated guess if you like, sir. I think that the Leaf's vested interest in us can be used as leverage."

"Educated...scholarly's more like it," you say with a smile. "It makes sense as an idea. The Leaf from what I can gather isn't hostile to me yet. I don't want to go as far as saying we should just waltz through town openly, but we might be able to game something from cooperating. Of course that all depends on how they're feeling. You also mentioned the Sand being desperate. Everyone knows it, and it's so easy to game that it's not funny. No way that this Madara guy hasn't considered it, let alone the other major powers."

"An officially unofficial Five Kage Summit," Senna says with a sigh. "Just jamming the tinderbox full..."

"I want to say it's an open conspiracy," Yukari replies. "But the shinobi in general are really just this stupid. Consider the three previous wars. First, shortly after the formation of the hidden villages, in which the First Hokage decided it was a good time to distribute power instead of consolidating it until the war was over. Then, the next was started by egregious forays into expansion using military force and a gross abuse of economic power, only about two decades after the previous war, erasing all previous progress," she continues, making a list with her fingers. "Then, the third war came into being solely because the previous two took place so close together that the military power that was supposed to be used to keep the peace was eroding. With all of the oppressive policies used to keep nations in check no longer being properly enforced, the minor nations decided they would take advantage...all of that added up and eventually led to all out war. In between the second and third wars, paranoia gripped the nations on the eastern coast, and they found time to band together, form an alliance, and wipe out the Whirlpool Village because if one nation couldn't hoard the power of fuinjutsu, then none of them could. They were very clearly forced into that action by the daimyo."

"Yeah, the daimyo are the cause of a lot of problems, it seems. We were talking among ourselves the other day about how Hashirama screwed that part up," you say.

"It's not something easily changed. In any case...you should decide on what to do about the current situation. As it is, you have two or three viable options to choose from," Yukari says. "You also have my knowledge at your disposal for the time being. I really would like to see what kind of decision you make, as that man's grandson."

"Hm."

"There is a reason behind it. Before I chose to get into the business of intelligence gathering, I was bent on revenge. I knew what had happened, that the Uzumaki clan was hunted down and slaughtered after the great shinobi nations decided that they couldn't use or control us anymore. So many people died in front of me, and I just barely managed to escape. I never had a home, and all I did was wander while holding all of the pain I felt inside of me. I gathered information, bit by bit. I made plans to destabilize the smaller villages, then the larger ones in time with violent revolutions led by the people. I called myself the Anarchist. And I called the group that I would lead the Liberation Front."

"So you were the terrorist they were talking about all that time ago."

"Yes. I carried out small missions, killing nobles and rich merchants. But...even with all my planning, once I came up against a formidable enough force, it didn't matter. Being strong didn't mean I could do it on my own. Senna and I met late into my time as the Anarchist, and while I was at my limit, she stuck by my side. She was the only one that did. Because of how I felt about her, I started to think about changing. And then, I really did make a change. I did what I was good at, and she helped me. Along the way, I met Jacob West, and learned things from him. I threw away the Anarchist persona and focused on gathering intelligence full time. I made use of small connections to make bigger and bigger ones. I robbed the rich to give to the poor and pocketed the profit in order to expand operations. I've blackmailed important people, changed the flow of markets, and crushed enterprises. But then...I've always had that vision in mind. I still think that one day, we can liberate this world from the shackles that bind it so tightly. I believe that we can free the people from this oppressive world, from this ever-turning wheel of darkness that boxes us in. Jacob West sought to do it in his own way, and if he hadn't disappeared, he may have succeeded. But he's not here anymore."

"Yukari thinks it'll come down to you," Senna says. "And I think so too. Someone like Miss Reaper over there has always gone her own way. If you could draw someone like that to your side, and give rise to new ideals...it's hard to say what your limit is. I'm sure it's enough to flip the world upside down, and that sounds like fun~"

"Well? What do you think, darling?" Hannah asks. "I think...we should go to the Leaf and see about their silly exams. A chance to intervene if necessary, yes?"

"I agree with Miss Hannah," Ritsu says. "Maybe we're not heroes, but we can try and do something if this goes badly. And go further...I think that there are others who can give us a clear path into the future, waiting for us at this event."

"Seeing as you don't have a goal in mind for the future - I'm assuming - this should be a good time to evaluate all the options you have. And the last thing you should want is for that supposed avatar of Madara Uchiha to make your moves for you," Yukari says.

Those are good points. You always have the option of staying out of the whole mess, but it might not be a bad idea to see what's going on. In the meantime, you have access to the powers of the shinobi world's information queen. Maybe you could tap into that first.

Episode 3.1: Brave New World
"I'd like some advice," you say to Yukari. "I think learning about the world as it is now will help."

"That's only fair. It's approaching evening, so Senna and I will prepare something for dinner. We can talk afterwards," she says.

"Alright, that's fine with me."

"In that case, I'll go and study this scroll some more," Hannah says as she lifts herself from your lap. "Yukari, is your reading room available?"

"In the same place as before."

"Excellent. Ritsu, come with me. There are a few things I want to teach you."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Joshua, we'll see you in a few hours. Absence does make the heart grow fonder, so try to contain yourself~"

"I'll try," you quip back. She winks and heads off with Ritsu in tow.

"We have guest rooms available as well. Is there anything you'd like from us?" Yukari asks, rising to her feet with you.

"A current map and recent historical documents pertaining to the five shinobi powers. Anything between five and ten years ago, preferably."

"Of course. Senna, if you'd be so kind."

"No problem~! I'll take you to your room, Mister West. Then I'll get you your reading material."

Senna leads you out and down the hall to your quarters. Everything is plain and in light colours; you see mixes of reds and oranges on the walls, and your bed is a light pink. There's a wooden desk with an oil lamp on it, and the light filtering through the window tells you that it's already evening.

"Some tea?" Senna asks.

"Yeah, I'd like that. Thank you."

"You're welcome. I'll be back with a pot and your reading material."

You settle into the chair at your desk and pull out some pens, along with an old book for references and a blank scroll. Senna brings you the requested material along with your teapot, some sugar, and milk. You thank her again and then get to reading.

This was part of routine maintenance. Re-calibrating yourself against current events, learning from the past, and gearing up for a possible future. As you expect, Yukari has well-vetted sources and detailed material, dense enough for most people to find intimidating while not being incredibly dry. The handbook you carry is for your known knowns, things that you knew to be true regardless of circumstance. You check what you're reading against it as things come to your memory; you don't need the book to remember things, you need the book to be distinct from your memory and an anchor point to reality. Anything could happen...capture, torture, interrogation, brainwashing and coercion. Security was never a guarantee. But then was "the truth" in itself a guarantee, or some kind of constant? Many things in the world are built on lies and half-truths.

Wondering what reality was and wasn't was another question entirely. Whatever this reality you lived in was built on, you had to navigate it. The information you gained here, with your own senses, was necessary to move through the three dimensional space.

"..."

You would think on that later. Setting the book down, you take up a pen and start to jot down notes. Reviewing the first part of what you learned would be good.

---

Yukari has a traditional dinner table, low to the ground, long, and rectangular with four legs. There are soft cushions for you to sit on top of the tatami mats. Tonight is fish night.

Hannah and Ritsu talk about what they found earlier and shamelessly flirt by feeding each other pieces of salmon. You don't pay it any mind, and Yukari calmly eats while Senna chatters away at both of you. She's a gentle one, but really playful in her own way. She's also very close to Yukari, and though she's not blatant about it, Yukari feels the same way. Work isn't discussed much over dinner, which was also the rule at your home. Mom and Dad were - are - both in the government, sometimes opposing each other on policy. At the end of the day they were the same old people, terribly in love with each other and willing to do anything to protect each other and their family. You only hope they're all doing okay. Not that they need you, but...it'd be nice to be home.

"We'll have tea back in the common room," Yukari announces. Everyone agrees and unanimously passes on any heavy desserts. The group heads back to the room you were in at the start and you take a seat while Senna makes more tea.

"I assume you wanted to get yourself up to speed on the shinobi powers," Yukari says.

You nod and adjust yourself as Ritsu places herself in your lap this time, putting your arms around her. "Reorienting myself only seemed right, considering."

"That's diligent of you. I very much appreciate it," she replies with a smile. "Let's begin."

She taps her wrist and a scroll appears out of thin air. Rolling it out in front of her, she scans the text for a moment before returning her attention to you and starting to speak.

"This information is up to date as of two weeks ago. We can start with the strongest of the five major nations, the Hidden Leaf. Currently under the leadership of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. His wife is Kushina Uzumaki, very obviously a cousin of mine. She was taken into the village as part of an arrangement long ago, some time after the deaths of the First and Second Hokage. She currently holds the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox. Because of the policies of the Fourth Hokage, there have been many advances in technology and livelihoods. He's quite keen on trying new things, even if they don't work out the first time. Their military pressure is astounding and unheard of in history. Orochimaru is firmly allied with the village and travels back and forth between it and the Hidden Sound. His teammates, the Toad Sage Jiraiya and Slug Princess Tsunade, both live in the village proper. There's the Third Hokage, still able bodied in retirement. And then the many, many elite clans that make up the village body. The coup planned by the Uchiha was brought down from the inside by Itachi and Shisui Uchiha with only minor incident. The Hyuuga still maintain their power and influence. And so on."

"That would put anyone on edge," you say.

"Yes, that much is true. Economically, socially, and militarily, the Leaf is at the top. Others are wary of the potential influence that the Leaf could have on the continent if their power continues to grow. This worry has been exacerbated by the reported strengths of the rookies joining this year's exams. Names such as Sasuke Uchiha, Hinata Hyuuga, and Naruto Uzumaki have been talked about all over the country. You have distinguished jounin such as Sharingan Kakashi and Itachi Uchiha, who I mentioned, Might Guy, Asuma Sarutobi...the lists go on. The village is quite content and humming along, with little to no worry about invasion or any sort of collapse. They feel that they're more than ready to host these upcoming exams without incident, and that they can contain any trouble if it does start. As for what they feel about you specifically...the feeling is one of curiosity. The higher ups want to see what you can do, and whether or not you pose a real threat. The older generation including the past two Hokage have had a direct encounter with Jacob West, and decided there was no reason to panic in regards to your presence."

"That sounds-"

"A word of warning. There's a sort of...battle craze among the elites. They enjoy testing their strength against each other, and would definitely try to engage you on the same terms your grandfather did them."

"Oh. That sounds...pleasant, I guess."

Yukari nods. "The polite thing to do would be to oblige them, I think. You seem to be strong enough from what the Reaper has told me, and losing wouldn't necessarily hurt your reputation. You're young, and you have time to improve as well as an immense potential. The Leaf, for better or worse, is a straightforward place."

She takes a sip of tea before setting her cup down. "The next item is the Hidden Cloud. You've been, I remember."

"Yeah. Real hot spot."

"They took offense to your grandfather's approach and considered him a terrorist. With the report of your exile from Iron, they labeled you in the same manner and took pains to seek you out. A recent report has someone matching your description evading a special task force, after an anonymous tip. That was when Madara confronted you, I assume."

"Yeah. Did they involve anyone in their investigation?"

"Allegedly they said you left with another young woman, and she was interviewed briefly by some members of the task force. The information she gave was inconclusive, according to authorities. There was also suspicion that you headed north, and they interviewed people at a nearby settlement who denied ever encountering any visitors."

You smile. Gina and Shiina...looking out for you even after you split town. You'd definitely have to find them and thank them properly one day.

"You made a couple of good friends, then. Always a solid strategy," Senna says with a nod.

"Their personal hostilities aside, Cloud's economic situation is very good...though you wouldn't be able to tell from on the ground. The majority of their money goes straight to the military side and into all kinds of projects, including their shinobi development, their weapons departments, and a secretive piece of technology that they've been working on for the past five years. From what I have gathered...it's a long range beam weapon."

"A...what?" you ask.

"Some kind of chakra cannon. Nobody's been able to get a detailed look at it, but it's big. They're going to do tests within the next few months. They have all kinds of dummy locations, so it's hard to figure out where exactly it is or if they have more than one even," Senna says.

"That sounds outrageous, but if it is true, then it could prove a clear and present danger," Hannah says. "I can only assume the range will include the Leaf, and that means that every minor nation within that sphere is in grave danger as well. Including the Waterfall, which has the power of a tailed beast to themselves."

"A chakra cannon with the range to hit the Leaf would also be able to tag the Mist, and the Rock is in a straight line across from the Cloud too. That's three major powers in range right there. All it takes is one warning shot landing near a hidden village to trigger all out war. I don't know what the sides would be, but I know it would be a bloodbath," you say.

"The weapon aside, Cloud has been steadily stockpiling arms and increasing the size of its standing army. They seem to be ready for war already, but at this point it's still just posturing," Yukari continues. "They have two jinchuuriki at their disposal, both elite shinobi in their own rights. Yugito Nii, host of the Two-Tailed Cat, and the brother of the Raikage, called Killer B, host of the Eight-Tailed Ox. The Raikage of course is A, the Fourth after his father, also called A."

"I heard that the names A and B are ceremonial titles," Ritsu says.

"Yes. They're given out to the lineage of the Raikage and their chosen partners respectively. A and B aren't biological siblings, but you couldn't tell and it never mattered to them. If anything were to happen to Killer B, the Raikage would tear the world apart in retaliation, no matter the cost to himself."

"You sometimes forget that others are human. Even if he is a horrid warmonger, he has a heart, and a family. Regretful," Hannah says with her eyes closed. "But the world is cruel like that."

"It is unfortunate, yes," Yukari replies. "The village is largely stable, though there are elements of unrest within the masses. The daimyo isn't receptive to criticism. There is also a unique chain of command...in case of emergency, the next five Raikage have already been confirmed. One of these in the chain is a rookie making her debut at the exams...her name is Hisano Miyajima, a prodigious user of Lightning Release."

"They have a rookie genin in line for the Kage position?" you ask, surprised.

"The Cloud is very serious about any threat to its military power. Miyajima is at the bottom of that list for now, but if she's powerful enough to be considered, we should pay attention."

"Can't argue with that."

"Much like the Leaf, they have various talented shinobi in their ranks. They also have a bad reputation, due to trying to steal secrets and kidnap shinobi from other villages. Two well documented attempts are the kidnapping of Kushina, which was foiled by Minato in his youth, and the reveal of a conspiracy to kidnap Hinata, the daughter of the current clan leader Hiashi Hyuuga. There's no telling what they could be up to in terms of spy work and infiltration. They also covet the power of the tailed beasts. Before Hashirama gave them the Eight and Two Tails, they tried to steal the Nine Tails."

"As expected of a nation of reprobates," Hannah says dismissively. You sense a little more than bad blood here...maybe a bad job in the Cloud, or something else. Or she was just mad from hearing about the chakra cannon, which really was ridiculous.

"The next item is the Hidden Rock. They stand proud and have a stable military structure, if not as well funded as the Cloud. Their shinobi are hardened and battle tested. Much of their military strength relies on subterfuge; taking advantage of situations such as temporary alliances and truces in order to get ahead. They're active in the underground, even making use of the yakuza. And they're Akatsuki's biggest client by far."

"You think they're in league with Madara?" you ask.

"No. There haven't been any such mentions, and the higher ups don't want anyone to know about what's going on. The village proper is led by Oonoki, called the Great Fence Sitter by many, or the more charitable and noble looking title of 'Oonoki of Both Scales'."

"Why is he called that?" Ritsu asks. "I always wondered. It's a reference to a balance, isn't it?"

"Yes. The meaning is that he always tries to get his way, that is to say that at the end of the day, the scales are always balanced in his favour. He is ruthless in trying to control the world around him, and put his village in the best possible position. He is the protege of the Second Tsuchikage, Mu, and inherited his world view from that man. That, and the kekkei tota known as Dust Release, a combination of Earth, Wind, and Fire Releases that can destroy opponents on a molecular level. Oonoki is feared for his mastery of it, and this combined with the village's considerable defenses makes them a hard target to attack. That said, if our reports about the chakra cannon in Cloud are correct, they will be thinking about making a move soon. They have had an enmity with the Sand for a long while and the latter has been weakened severely by recent political decisions. Grass is the only thing separating them from Fire Country and the Leaf, who they are extremely wary of thanks to multiple wars and the latter's rising military power. They border Waterfall, and have a known hunger for tailed beasts despite having two of their own; Roshi holds the power of the Four Tailed Monkey, and Han the power of the Five-Tailed Horse...I believe it's a horse, but with a...hm...Senna?"

"It's a dolphin's head."

"Thank you. I think it's still a horse in this case, adding it all up. Hidden Rock carries the power of those two beasts. Waterfall has a jinchuuriki of their own, so there's incentive to infiltrate that village and try to acquire that valuable asset."

"They sound as bad as the Cloud," you say. "And they're practically on the doorstep of the Iron."

"Possibly worse than the Cloud. While A is open about his ambitions, Oonoki is quite deceptive about all of his intentions. Their only real weakness is in their economy, and that can be fixed quickly if they so choose. Behind Oonoki's leadership is a group of oligarchs, called the Grand Pillars. They have a tight hold on the entire economy of Earth Country, including the Hidden Rock and the underground to the point where even the yakuza have to play by their rules. They want Oonoki in power for as long as possible, and he caters to their needs as much as he can."

"How much do they push the policies?" you ask.

"They don't. They only care about results and like many 'true patriots', the prosperity and superiority of the Hidden Rock compared to the rest of the world. They're more than willing to leave Oonoki to his devices as long as he keeps doing his job. You're thinking the same thing that I am, and yes...he is most definitely making them dance to his tune. As for his thoughts on your existence, he is intrigued, and very clearly trying to use your name as leverage against the Cloud. They would be cautious at your presence, but willing to have a talk if the time is right."

"Control of the economy in that manner means he could conceivably make up an excuse for all out war any time that he wants," Ritsu points out. "The sound of that is...distressing enough. Even if Wind Country doesn't carry a large amount of economic weight, the strategic advantage from a successful invasion would be enormous."

"We can talk about the Hidden Sand next." Yukari pauses to drink her tea properly and you do the same, sharing a cup with Ritsu. Hannah nibbles on a biscuit and Senna twirls a strand of hair around her finger while daydreaming.

"Thank you for waiting," Yukari says as she sets her cup down. "The Hidden Sand is in open distress. What we know of their history is that they had possession of the One-Tailed Tanuki before the formation of the village system. They tried to negotiate for money and land, which angered the other villages to the point where Hashirama had to intervene. They never did get what they wanted, and lived off of the desert itself to varying degrees of success. The village is well fortified and quite difficult to attack. That said...all of the previous Kazekage have died at the hands of assassins or defectors. The Third Kazekage in particular was a source of contention; he went missing and the village expended a great amount of resources to find him. It left the village weakened and they had to call off that search once the Third War was declared. They found themselves forced to choose a new Kazekage, the Fourth, called Rasa. He is a utilitarian at his core. The tailed beast in the village's possession is sealed within his son, Gaara of the Desert. Not on condition of limited candidacy...but sheer choice."

"I know that the Kage tend to have those close to them serve as hosts, due to the assumption of loyalty and family ties making them less likely to betray the village," Hannah says.

"Yes. The first two children, Temari and Kankuro, were incompatible. Gaara was determined to be a proper match. So they had the beast sealed into him while...he was in his mother's womb."

"What?!" you yell, making Ritsu squirm a bit. "How is that even...?"

"Sealing methods are diverse and numerous," Yukari says soberly. "After the Third Shinobi War, the daimyo and elites of Wind Country saw the rates of the Hidden Leaf as more competitive, and thus outsourced a large amount of missions to the Leaf. This put enormous pressure on the Hidden Sand to not only produce superior shinobi, but to complete missions no matter the human cost. Gaara was an attempt to capitalize on the former. He was sealed inside of his mother, and she ended up giving birth prematurely from the stress. She died shortly after meeting her son for the first time. Gaara was reckless, a loose cannon who could barely control the beast inside of him. An inadequate seal, inadequate training, and a village hostile to his very existence...despite that, after numerous assassination attempts, he's finally started to control the beast inside of him. He has become his village's strongest and greatest asset."

"And now he's on the way to the exams. But you don't seem too thrilled about it," you say to Yukari.

"He's a psychopath. The only reason he has any agency is because the village is desperate and running on fumes. Rasa has tried to sell gold dust, but the revenue has never been enough. This exam might be their last chance to prove to the world that they are worth something, anything. They have been desperate for a long while and any advantage will appeal to them. There's every chance that they could use Gaara as a catalyst for war. Every report we've obtained says that he's never once been harmed in combat. The village believes he's invincible, and with the power of the tailed beast inside of him, he can complete just about any mission."

"The strength of the individual over the collective. Something completely opposite of the Leaf," you muse.

"Yes, that's true. The Hidden Sand...is concerned about your presence and how it would shift the balance of power. Their problem is that they have no resources to spare when it comes to tracking your movements. They're effectively blind at this moment. Very hard to say what they would or could do in an encounter, especially with someone as bloodthirsty as Gaara at their disposal."

Yukari stops again to sip at her tea. Senna refreshes her cup along with everyone else's before she continues.

"The last village, and the most mysterious we will get to...that of the Hidden Mist. The Mist has a reputation because of its prior missing-nin issues. Like many problems, things started to fall apart after the Third War. I'm sure that you're noticing the theme by now. The village had a caste system and treated so called undesirables like tools, sending them on perilous missions constantly. There was rampant corruption and many talented shinobi openly defected, leading to the hunter-nin policy you hear about so often in the current era. But even that was questionable when the hunter-nin made to hunt missing-nin became missing-nin themselves. It was a terrible mess, sparked by the Fourth Mizukage and former host of the Three-Tailed Turtle. His name was Yagura Karatachi, and he was responsible for the era known as the Bloody Mist."

"Those with bloodline limits were hunted, I remember," you say.

"Yes, those of all kinds. The Uzumaki who settled in the region quickly left, feeling that even if they never used their abilities they wouldn't be safe. The Yuki for example were effectively wiped out, and even those loyal to the village who displayed 'strange abilities' without the social protection of a noble clan were in danger every time they went on a mission. It was a time of bloodshed and betrayal, of great turmoil. Going as far as using the Three Tails as a throwaway weapon during the Third War, even. I don't have the exact details, but the fact that they had to retrieve the tailed beast they originally had in their possession says enough. There is much made of the fact that Yagura did not seem himself while in the role of Kazekage, and documentation backs that up."

"Oh, no. You don't think..."

"I believe so. I think that whoever this Madara is had a role in whatever happened during the Bloody Mist. It's also said that the Hidden Mist is the origin of Akatsuki itself, though that's a false rumour spread by the Hidden Rock. While Yagura was said to be strict, his ruthlessness took to new heights once he became Mizukage."

"We've heard a bit about his successor, though," Hannah says.

"Yes. There was a coup against Yagura that was won relatively recently. The leader of the rebels was a young woman with two bloodline limits. Her name is Mei Terumi, the Fifth Mizukage. She controls Boil Release, which combines Fire and Water, and Lava Release, which combines Fire and Earth. Mei was resented even as she fought for the sake of the people because of her bloodline limits. Even so, she continued to endure and eventually led her forces to victory, killing Yagura in battle. Mist is still untrustworthy to many, but Mei has worked tirelessly to reform every part of the village, including better treatment for those with bloodline limits, the removal of the caste system, improving the shinobi training programs further, and improving ties with the other nations and people in the surrounding region."

"She sounds like she has a heavy burden," Ritsu says. "And if something goes wrong, all of the progress she made could very easily be erased. This Mei Terumi sounds very brave to have taken on all of this. Not only fighting for her village, but trying desperately to save it from itself."

"The Hidden Mist has possession of two tailed beasts at this time. The Three-Tails is currently sealed away, and through great efforts they've regained the trust of the host of the Six-Tailed Slug, Utakata. This helps shore up their military strength. They have two up and coming kunoichi who will be attending the exams, Junko Kuronuma and Shiori Ishikawa. They've already gained a solid reputation as the Phantom Maids, under the instruction of Kisame Hoshigaki, the wielder of Samehada."

"Hoshigaki stayed behind? Hm. I would have thought that he would take the chance to leave during the coup," Hannah muses out loud.

"Mei offered him clemency and a place in the village. It just so happened that he and those two girls took to each other in the space of his deliberations. Wanting to help those he called 'flowers' grow made him feel content enough to stay. A happy ending of sorts. He might have been in Zabuza Momochi's place if things were slightly different. As for personal motivations...I've been contacted indirectly by several Mist operatives over the years in regards to your whereabouts, Joshua. The Mizukage is keen on meeting with you and is taking a very measured approach to it."

"Maybe she just wants a nice strong man to make babies with," Hannah jokes.

Yukari gives her a wry smile. "That angle can also be considered."

"Eh...?"

"Lady Terumi is nearing what women call a 'critical age', that is to say, the age where your chances of being married drop rapidly according to social norms," Yukari explains. "She doesn't reveal it purposely, but it's an open secret in the Mist that she's quite interested in finding a suitable bachelor before she hits thirty. But it's difficult for powerful women and women in positions of power to find the right person to date, let alone settle down with."

"Yukari's never worried about such things," Senna says with a smile.

"I've had no reason to. Before, I was too consumed with revenge. Now...I've found my place. There's no sense in changing what's already a good thing." Yukari and Senna share a meaningful look.

"So those are all of the major villages, then."

"Yes. I hope you can make use of that information, perhaps at the exams if you do choose to go there."

"No doubt. It's a lot of good stuff. I appreciate it, Yukari."

"Not a problem. All of this is information I keep on hand daily."

You nod as Ritsu sleeps peacefully against your chest. "Next order of business, I think...Akatsuki. Can you give me any extra information on them, Yukari?"

"I can-"

"Oh, oh~! Let me try, Yukari! Please?"

She sighs and gives Senna a nod. The taller girl smiles and hops onto her feet. "Thanks much~"

"Don't be too meandering, please."

"Yup! Okay, information on the Akatsuki." Senna closes her eyes for a moment before they snap open again. "What we know is that Akatsuki is portrayed as a legitimate business group, with several shell companies and small operating centers. The clear danger presented by them is their willingness, bordering on insistence, to take on jobs well below market value. This is going to cause big problems by undermining the current market for missions, leading to less revenue overall. For the time being, a lot of people are still willing to pay the normal rates for missions, and nobles can afford it."

"How far does this go back?" you ask Senna.

"To around the time the Third War was ending...because of course it would be then, right? Like everything else...anyways. Akatsuki chases after S-Rank criminals and missing-nin, in addition to having associates all around the continent. They use middlemen to seek out work and report their findings to the main organization. Remember that they use shell companies and charge below market rates, so they're using other means to supplement their operations, like drug operations, heists, illegal trade, even dealing human organs. There's no job too dirty or unscrupulous for Akatsuki to take. By doing this, they're actively trying to corner the market on shinobi missions and force the villages out of business. If you heard something like this out in the street, you would dismiss it as conspiracy theory, right? But as Yukari has already mentioned, some of the villages themselves have gone as far as hiring Akatsuki to their work for cheap. More and more people are discovering how much money they can save. It's very much possible that as peace continues, Akatsuki will pick up steam."

"If that happens, then they control the movements of the shinobi world. They can start and stop wars on a whim, maybe even manipulate the tailed beasts," you say.

"We've been tracking the rate of use of Akatsuki services across the major villages, and it's been growing tremendously. Allowing the trend to continue will undercut security efforts and make the tailed beasts increasingly vulnerable. We don't know if that's their goal at all, or if they simply want to end the village system first and then take control of what are powerful weapons in human form. Simply said, it's not a good outcome with so many of the villages on edge," Yukari says.

"Most people in the Cloud don't use Akatsuki services unless they're down on their luck. They either use the shinobi or mercenaries such as yourself, Joshua. Leaf is incredibly reliable, so they've had very little trouble keeping Akatsuki use curbed. They don't seem to operate much near the Mist, but they're putting a strain on the Sand financially as most people there are too poor to afford the normal shinobi rates. As for the smaller nations, business is really booming," Senna says. "The minor villages are getting their usual amounts of work, but independent areas find Akatsuki invaluable. A fair bit of revenue comes from that alone. There aren't any indications of what Akatsuki's end goal is. It might be to take over the world, and it's certainly possible if the masked man really is Madara Uchiha. Madara had always wanted complete control, and saw it as the only path towards true peace."

"Do we know anything about who's in Akatsuki?" you ask.

"The main group hasn't had any visible gatherings. They're very secretive about what they do and how they do it, meaning communications and operations are kept to a minimum and done on untraceable channels. The middlemen are as they're labeled; people far away from what's actually going on at the heart of the group. Buuuuut," Senna says with a smile, "that's not an obstacle for us. Yukari, brilliant as she is, came up with a great idea to track the possible recruits into Akatsuki. In order to survive, those in the Bingo Book and especially of S-Rank need to take jobs in the underground. We all know that reputation is worth more than its weight in gold, and if you don't have solid go-betweens, you won't have much in the way of work. Being employed by a group changes that, because now your reputation is weighed collectively. So we took a look at the active S-Rank criminals and mapped what we knew about their job habits and earnings. That was followed by a touch of deductive reasoning. It's not as accurate as we would like, but it sets a good table for us in future investigations."

Yukari taps the top of her wrist and another scroll pops into being near Senna. She grabs it from the air and unrolls it, nodding once.

"From what Yukari and I have gathered, and your report on Madara in the Cloud, we know that Zabuza Momochi and Haku Yuki are in the group, from the Mist. They want funds for a proper coup against the Mist, not believing that the Fifth Mizukage will be able to change things for good. The masked man who calls himself Madara Uchiha, formerly of Leaf. Kakuzu from the Hidden Waterfall, a man who was soundly defeated by the First Hokage - yes, that's correct - and escaped from his village after slaughtering the elders, ripping out their hearts, and then stealing a forbidden art. Deidara of the Hidden Rock, who turned terrorist before stealing a forbidden art and joining Akatsuki. Hidan, from the Hot Springs, who left after being dissatisfied with the transition into a tourist location. He worships a 'god' called 'Jashin' who demands destruction and sacrifice, and thus he makes a habit of murdering people for his rituals."

Ritsu stirs under you a bit in her sleep. You pat her head and she calms down.

"We have Sasori of the Red Sand, once a hero of the Hidden Sand before his disappearance. Another from the Mist, Kaitaikojo Shigisei and his older sister Ishako. They've wiped out entire villages and regions of people on a whim. Dosu Kinuta, who uses sound as a weapon. Akane Himura, originally from the Hidden Rock and an incredibly proficient user of Lava Release. And Akemi Hiroyuki, originally from the Mist with a sizable grudge against Mei Terumi. It was Mei who personally killed her parents during the coup for their role in the Bloody Mist. Akemi has a mastery of Ice Release. There are more to be sure, but those are the notable faces within the organization at current."

"If all of them were sent out at once, they could take out an entire nation," you say.

"They could. However, I suspect that their personalities and abilities are volatile and wouldn't work together in a large scale operation. Akatsuki is noted to have their missions be done solo or in pairs at the most."

"I see. They might want to stir up trouble at these exams as well."

"It's possible. Making war a bigger business would help them towards their ultimate goal, whatever it might be. Yukari and I will keep looking out for more clues, but it's safe to say that they should be stopped before they get too big to control. The hidden villages don't see any reason to act just yet, but they should act soon."

"Hm. The last thing I want to ask. What do you guys recommend to supplement my kit? Like in battle and overall, I mean."

Yukari thinks for a moment as Senna plops back into her seat. "Mm. Summons are a useful part of any toolkit. There are many options. Your grandfather in particular had multiple summoning contracts. The elephants were one, with their use of Earth, Water, and Wind techniques. The falcons were another, using Wind Release and Fire Release in conjunction with their incredible speed. His last contract was with a small group of mythological creatures. They are called the Elder Dragons."

"Elder...Dragons?" you mutter.

Hannah sits up. "The Elder Dragons? I didn't think that was possible...nobody should be able to contact them, let alone summon them."

"It goes to show you how special Jacob West was. Yes, the Elder Dragons reside on the astral plane normally. Nobody knows exactly how they came into contact with him, but they met and formed a contract. It's said that the way forward is within the area known as the Mountains' Graveyard. Other than that, there is no more information. The Elder Dragons are commonly connected with the legend of Ichiro, the Ancient One, also called the Envoy of Heaven. His form is unknown to us as well. For information on the other summons mentioned, or all of them besides, your smartest move is to talk to the ninneko of the Sky Ward, out in the western part of Fire Country. They are not affiliated with anyone currently, though they traditionally have close ties with the Uchiha Clan. As for other things...there's not much I could recommend other than attempting to learn some sealing arts for utility. I believe that it's far from my place to try and plot a path for you. Your fighting style works much better without committing to a weapon, I believe, and simply improving your ninjutsu use would allow you much more flexibility in terms of attack options. Improving your genjutsu ability would help right away. Again, not to drive you in one direction or another, but I think that maximizing your strategies with what you currently have will serve a greater purpose."

"I understand. Thanks for your help, Yukari."

She nods. "The pleasure is mine. Ah, there is one particular thing you should look into. The use of Sage Arts. It's commonly talked about with the Toads and Snakes, but it's my belief that other species of animal also have secrets regarding the Sage Arts. It's almost certain that if you make contact with the Elder Dragons, you will learn about these things."

"So things like Sage Mode that I was hearing about."

"Yes, exactly. Hm...I don't believe I have anything else. Senna?"

"Nothing from me~"

"Alright. I think we should all head to bed now. Tomorrow is another day," Yukari says as she stands up. "Will you need anything, Joshua?"

"I'll be fine, thanks." You hand off the sleeping Ritsu to Hannah, who heads out after Yukari. Senna tells you that she's fine to clean up on her own.

As soon as you get to your bed, you fall asleep.

---

Your sleep was really refreshing. After taking a shower and changing, you follow the smell of breakfast to the dining room. Yukari and Senna are already present, Hannah follows a few minutes later, then Ritsu last. She sits beside you and immediately leans on your shoulder.

While everyone else starts eating, you think on what you want to do next.

[] Chart your course for the Hidden Leaf. At this time, the Chuunin Examination is about to begin. Might as well make a splash.
-[] Start near the Leaf itself.
-[] Head for the busy district of Tanzaku first.
-[] Go to the Fire Country capital.
-[] Go to the Sky Ward and meet with the ninja cats.

[] The Leaf is just a bit too hot for your liking right now. Maybe somewhere else until things die down. The only Kage currently in their village is the Hokage.
-[] Sand is temporarily weakened with its elites out, making for an easier cruise through Wind.
-[] Mist has always been mysterious. You might be able to gather something from Water Country and the surrounding area.
-[] Rock seems to have plans for you. Maybe a tour around Earth will help you figure it out.
-[] Cloud. Really hostile. Just escaped there a while back. Should you really?
-[] Other write in. Minor villages are accepted.

[] Start training. You'll need at least two weeks to see results, which will change your schedule. Three weeks is the most you can devote to this. You'll also see results for your partners.
-[] Training days. Increase your physical stats.
--[] Spend two weeks for 2 points to distribute.
--[] Spend three weeks for 3 points to distribute.
-[] Research days. Improve your current abilities or create new ones.
--[] Spend two weeks to improve a technique by one level, unlock a new level of one technique, or gain one element level.
--[] Spend three weeks to create the base of a new technique, or gain two element levels to distribute.

[] Before you do anything, ask Yukari for advice. (write in on whatever you want)

[] Something completely different from the other options. (write in)

Episode 3.2: Brave New World
"I've decided on going to the Sky Ward," you say to Yukari. She sips from her teacup and nods.

"Understood. I suggest you stay another day or two to be sure of your supplies. I have maps of the Fire Country for your use, and there's something I would like to prepare for your departure. I also have things I wish to discuss with Miss Kuiper."

"That's fine with me. Guess we'll move on in two days or so."

"Thank you."

You finish breakfast and spend the rest of the morning teaching Ritsu about your formations, then reinforcing all of the things she learned in her crash course. She's sharper than before and more willing to make mistakes in practice for the purposes of learning from them.

Hannah, Yukari, and Senna have long conversations in a closed off room. They're presumably about underworld things that you had yet to understand; they don't talk about anything that goes on in there, even tangentially. But you don't try to pry, either. If it was anything you needed to hear, Hannah would tell you about it.

You're surprised, then, to get your own private session with Yukari. She asks you about your thoughts on the world and what you want to do, what your aim is in trying to find your grandfather, things of that nature. She asks you about what you do as a mercenary and teaches you things about the underground that you hadn't been aware of. The standard conventions, the new types of coded language, the emerging ideologies and paradigm shifts brought about by Akatsuki's disruption of the industry. Yukari also asks you about the things you do on a smaller, individual scale with clients, taking a keen interest in everything that you say and whatever it is that you explain. She's formulating thoughts, you just don't know what kinds based on the amounts of information you've given her. The two of you talk well into the night before breaking off for bed.

Breakfast, then some escape demonstrations with Ritsu, where she learns to engage and disengage from physically superior opponents. While she's not very strong, she's clever in how she uses her small frame to move freely in and out of situations. Any sharp object in her hands is useful if not immediately deadly.

The time to leave comes after a light lunch.

"While I talked to each of you yesterday, I put the finishing touches on a sealing art that I created," Yukari says. The five of you are in the front garden currently. "Ritsu, come here."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Give me your hand."

Ritsu obeys and Yukari takes her hand. A soft light ripples up the seals on Yukari's arm as a sealing formula inscribes itself on Ritsu's wrist. It makes a full circle before emitting a white glow for a few seconds.

"Hannah, Joshua."

You follow Ritsu's lead and Yukari has the sealing formula appear on your wrists as well.

"The art is called Correspondence. It's simple enough in execution, but a bit complicated in design. Press any part of your hand against the seal on your wrist, whether it's fingers or your entire palm. Flow chakra into it. Then focus a thought into it, towards one of your comrades."

You blink before deciding to try it. [Can you hear me, Ritsu?]

[Loud and clear, sir.]

[Huh. So if I speak to Hannah...but I don't think about speaking to her...]

[Can you hear me?]

[Yeah,] you say. [Did you hear what I just said?]

[No. Hold on a moment. Ritsu? Can you hear me now?]

[I can, ma'am.]

[I can hear you too.]

You look at Yukari. "So this allows for selective transmission?"

"Yes. All three seals are linked using chakra. Yours, Ritsu's, Hannah's, mine, and Senna's. We want to keep in contact with you, of course. The way the seal works is much like those modern radios. Having your channel primed to receive transmissions means you can hear anything directed to you from your partner in real time. You can either make it a direct one to one conversation by focusing on one person, or make it a group conversation by focusing on multiple people that you have in mind."

"There's an effective range, I assume?" Hannah asks.

"The total range is unlimited. The speed of transmission is what changes, as you've deduced. As you exceed ten kilometers, there is a delay in reception. If you send a message to someone far away, they won't hear what you're saying right away. You can also choose to send delayed messages yourself. The person receiving your messages also won't get them right away if their seal isn't primed with chakra."

"So these seals aren't on all the time, if I'm hearing correctly," Ritsu says. "We have to choose to send chakra to them if we want to do that. If they're on by our request, it means we can send and receive messages immediately. This is useful for stealth missions where we want to have as much contact as possible in case something changes. What about the chakra emissions?"

"Negligible. The same for the total chakra use as is. The signature is nothing when it's off, and matches your signature when it's on. Practically like it's not there," Yukari says.

"I see. And if we have them off, we can briefly activate them to send messages whether short or long distance. The recipient would be notified of a message and they can choose to answer it right away or wait."

"Correct. A small and distinct pulse of chakra is the notification."

"And you can direct messages to any person you like, as well as in groups if you have something that everyone needs to hear at once. This is the same for live and delayed messages. And the security measures are that we're tied together by our specific chakra signatures, so we'll know who is contacting us whenever they do contact us. The messages work on a specific wavelength or wavelengths, so they can't be immediately intercepted."

"Do you think some kind of mind scanning technique or genjutsu could make use of the seal?" you ask Yukari.

"A mind scan wouldn't enable the infiltrator to make use of the device on its own. It would have to be discovery of the capabilities followed by physical coercion. Even then, you can send out a message beforehand. There's an emergency function where you're able to bypass the touch functionality with a chakra surge to forcibly flip the seal to the on position. It takes more chakra than usual, but it's a useful tip. Genjutsu makes using the seal impossible, and you can't have the seal active while under genjutsu."

"Limited genjutsu protection, then," you conclude.

"Yes. It doesn't disrupt the use of user based genjutsu, so your techniques are fine," she says with a nod to Ritsu. "However, this should be a last resort, well below a dispel of any kind. The amount this could conceivably disrupt a proper genjutsu is small and thus should not be relied upon. It can briefly bring some awareness by way of incoming transmissions, but the seal typically recognizes your normal, stable chakra signature. It can be weakened, or changed somewhat by the influence of chakra modes, but the core typing will always be picked up and recognized by the seal. Genjutsu involves someone else implanting their chakra into you by various means and altering your chakra signature in a meaningful way. The seal will deny attempts to activate it from this foreign chakra signature. It's an extra layer of internal security that protects against potential abuse. That, and if your comrades are sending out messages that they expect replies for and don't get them, they can immediately know something is wrong."

"It's an incredibly secure piece of work on its own," Hannah remarks. "Combined with protocol, we should be able to communicate freely and securely in a way we never have before. You've outdone yourself, Yukari."

"Thank you. I don't take your praise lightly, Gold Reaper."

"I'm glad to hear that. We appreciate this gift."

"I've given something to Ritsu as well. It's a technique that I acquired long ago and made extensive use of as the Anarchist. The jutsu is Explosion Release: Harbinger of Freedom. As an emergency technique, I expect that you'll use it sparingly for now."

Ritsu nods. "I will, ma'am. Thank you." She lifts up her pant leg to show you the seal Yukari gave her, wrapped around her calf.

"We appreciate this, too. Gonna try to keep our girl out of trouble, either way. Thanks for having us."

"The pleasure was ours." Yukari hands you yet another item, a small scroll. "In case you want to visit. Please give us advance notice. We won't mind if you drop in unannounced, but I'll be sure to charge you for it."

"We're moving locations!" Senna chimes in. "The Village Hidden in Rain is a strange place, and it's a big, nasty dead zone for intelligence. They don't let anything in or out without inspecting it thoroughly. A lot of wars were fought in the area, and there was a civil war right after, you guessed it, the Third Great Ninja War. The war is supposedly raging even now. The leader of the Hidden Rain is Hanzo of the Salamander."

"The same man who gave out the title of Sannin," Hannah says. "Was he also bested by Jacob West?"

"Indeed he was. And it was he who gave that man the title of the 'Right Hand of God', even above the Sage."

"Right Hand of God...eh..."

"You have a lot to live up to, it seems," Hannah says with a smile.

"I do, yeah."

"I can't wait for you to reach the top, then. It's going to be something to celebrate."

You feel a bit overwhelmed at that kind of praise. "I...Hannah..."

"Believe in yourself like we do, sir." Ritsu gives you a smile of her own. "Lineage isn't everything, but it is something. You have a power inside of you that can make a difference."

"They're right. Cultivate your strength, prosper, and change the world," Yukari says. "While we unearth the secrets of that place drenched in rain, you will venture into the world and see how you can change it for the better. Do not doubt your strength, Joshua West."

You nod. "I won't. Nothing else to do but my best."

"Mm. And when you do figure out what you want to do with yourself...make sure to contact us. Much like the Reaper, I too want to see the heights you can reach. Until we meet again. Safe travels."

"Be safe~! We'll see you guys again soon!" Senna sings.

The three of you bow towards your hosts and leave the flower garden. You find yourself back in the empty lot, with no indication of where you came from.

"New friends...can't complain," you say to yourself. "Everyone ready?"

"Ready, sir," Ritsu says.

"Yes, darling. At your pleasure," Hannah replies.

"Alright. Fire Country and the Sky Ward, next stop. Gonna have a meeting with the ninneko and see what we can do about some extra help..."

Your group starts their run through the open field ahead, and to your next destination.

---

In the four days it takes you to reach the Sky Ward, you go over OPSEC again thoroughly with Ritsu and Hannah. Testing out the new communication seals comes next. You use them for a day in place of normal communication; it gets tiring but it also leads to a lot of discovery. Use as a genjutsu contingency is exactly as Yukari said, not very powerful other than as a last resort. You have notes from her that you consult. Ritsu studies up on the Five Kage and their top aides in order to sharpen her social speciality. Hannah is brainstorming some sort of idea that she wants to present to you at some point.

"Well. Certainly luxurious," Hannah quips.

The Sky Ward certainly has...a lot of sky. It's a ghost city with ruined buildings and a skyline that has all but crumbled away.

"There are people here, if only a few. And of course, the reigning inhabitants. Shall we go in?"

"Not too deep yet. Let's just have a peek," you say. The group heads into the city outskirts, and you see a few ninja and mercenaries milling about. There's some chatter, but it rings hollow against the walls nearby. Everything is relatively quiet.

"A child," Ritsu mumbles. You turn your head to see the edge of an orange blouse disappear behind a building.

"You want to go after her?" you ask.

"With your leave, sir."

"It sounds like a good idea. Or we could give chase together...mm, but that might frighten her," Hannah muses. "Thoughts, darling?"

You think on it a moment.

Episode 3.3: Brave New World
"We'll follow all together. Just try to be quiet and not scare the poor kid too much, alright? Ritsu, you give chase. Hannah and I will keep our distance and follow along other roads."

"Yes, sir." Ritsu takes off in the same direction as the girl. You and Hannah nod to each other before jumping to a rooftop and waiting a few moments. She starts off and you follow a ways behind her.

Winding through the city, you take note of how run down everything is. Many buildings are abandoned and crumbling, stone and concrete chipped off and left on the ground in random piles. You can see where metal has been pulled out of doors, windows, and exposed foundations. Trash is barely present, though that's probably owed to the low population more than anything else. The air is cleaner and clearer than most developed places.

There are different kinds of cats as you pass, some walking on two legs with shinobi attire, others in scaled down civilian clothing, still more that fit what you remember of domesticated cats, wandering around and occassionally grooming themselves. Humans appear every few blocks, trying not to look conspicuous but largely failing. You realize you stand out as well based on this, but the assumption is probably that you're looking for arms or some kind of illicit product like the rest of them.

Hannah comes to a stop and waits for you. "Ritsu's stopped up ahead. She's with the other girl."

[Things are all clear, sir. You can come down and talk.]

[Roger that.]

You nod to Hannah and jump down from the roof. The place you've ended up in is a small plaza, run down like everywhere else but with the addition of scattered bushes of flowers. Ritsu is playing a hand clapping game with the girl from earlier. She has short brown hair and brown eyes, and in addition to the orange blouse, she has red shorts and netted stockings with her sandals.

Ritsu stops the game and nods towards the two of you as you approach. "These are my comrades."

The girl bows deeply towards you. "M-my name's Tamaki. Nice to meet you."

"Same here. I go by Zeke."

"Dani," Hannah says. "It's our pleasure, Tamaki."

"Tamaki lives here with her grandmother," Ritsu explains. "She knows quite a bit about the city and the surrounding area, and I mentioned we needed some supplies. She can take us to her home."

"We'd like that," you say. "If it's okay with you and your grandma, Tamaki."

"You seem like nice people, so it's fine. The first thing Miss Yuu did was give me candy," she says with a smile. "Hopefully Baa-chan has what you need for your journey. Follow me, please."

The three of you follow her through the square plaza to a small home, wedged between a convenience store and a long closed cafe. Tamaki slides the door open and announces herself.

"Baa-chan! We have customers!"

"Bring them in, Tama."

"Don't worry about your shoes," Tamaki says. You follow her down the corridor and enter a large room on your right. It's stocked with supplies of all kinds; bladed weapons on the walls, stacks of blank tags beside crisp, unused scrolls. There are medical supplies and accessories, tools for explosives, and things like rebreathers.

There's a grey-haired woman sitting on a cushion near the back of the room, sipping tea. Her hair is like a fan at the back of her head and she has a cat's nose paired squinted eyes. Her robes are the same orange as Tamaki's shirt, and she wears a lavender scarf around her neck.

"Welcome, welcome. What brings you young people to this place?" she asks.

"We came around the area on recommendation," you say with a bow. Ritsu and Hannah follow suit. "I go by Zeke, and these are my partners Dani and Yuu."

"The folks around here know me as Nekobaa," she says with a nod towards you. The three of you sit on the available cushions and get comfortable. Tamaki mixes your drinks in the background.

"Obaa-san, we have questions going a bit deeper than the usual supplies," Hannah says.

"Go ahead, child."

"Thank you. Zeke and I have been considering making contact with those of the summoning world. Having partners at our back would help a lot."

"Yes, I know a bit about the animal kingdoms. Any in particular?"

"We were thinking about the elephants and falcons. And...something out there," you say. "We heard about the Elder Dragons."

"Hmph. Well, you might as well give me your real names now, you wild kids," she says with a smile.

"Sorry, Tamaki," Ritsu says.

"No problem," she replies as she comes back with cool drinks. "Everyone uses a fake name or ten, baa-chan always tells me as much! It doesn't change the fact that you're a kind person."

"You're definitely a sweetheart, Tamaki. Someone will be lucky in the future," Hannah says, making her blush.

"I'm Joshua West. This is my good friend-"

"And wife candidate."

"-and wife candidate, Hannah Kuiper. And last but not least, Ritsu Tanaka. We found her way here thanks to our friendly associate, Yukari Uzumaki."

"Ah, the Uzumaki child. Is she well?"

"Yeah, she was doing great. Gave us a lot of useful information. Apparently you guys have Uchiha ties."

"They like to come here to resupply, and thus do a lot of business with us. There was a bit of worry after hearing about that failed coup...but they're alright now, it seems. They don't ask us to do much at all. As long as we give them what they need, they offer their services and keep their noses out of town business. Your secrets are safe, children."

"We appreciate that, obaa-san," you say.

"Now, all of those summons were ones that your grandfather used. I never did meet him, but I heard many positive things...I wish that he could have completed his mission, whatever it was supposed to be. I guess things are left to you, eh?"

"I've been trying to find the guy. Straight up vanished...no luck on the trail so far. Summons will help. We can check the status of his contracts, right?"

"A good way to check, yes. Let me try and recall..." Nekobaa thinks for a while. "Hm. If I remember correctly, there's an elephant envoy in the south of this nation. The falcons can be contacted near the border of River Country. And the Elder Dragons I'm sure you were told can't be contacted by normal means. There's the Mountains' Graveyard...and one other place. It's a ways north of the Hidden Waterfall...you may have to ask the help of their shinobi in order to go forward. There's a certain temple that has been rumoured for years to have a link to the astral plane."

"Sounds like it's worth a shot," you say. "The two locations are close enough, relatively speaking."

"Obaa-san, would you also know anything about Orange Lake?" Hannah asks.

"There is a temple there, yes. Are you planning to head over?"

"Yes, ma'am. I wanted to study some of the scrolls and inscriptions."

"It's the long southern road away from the Leaf outskirts. I don't recall if the Nagano farm is still out there, but the temple is on the water edge, just outside of the farm limits. You can't miss it."

"Thank you very much," Hannah says with a respectful nod. Looks like you've got another solid lead on her prize, which is good news.

"Are there any other summons you would recommend?" you ask.

"Well..." She hums in thought for a bit. "Tamaki, have a look for me."

"Baa-chan, are you sure?"

"I'm sure, I'm sure."

"O-okay. Um, Mister Joshua? Could you give me your palm?"

"Sure." Tamaki sits in front of you and places her small palm against yours. She's perfectly still before letting out a breath. The same method is used for Hannah and Ritsu.

"Um..." She points to you. "Owls. They have the best eyes." Her finger moves to Hannah. "Tigers. Swift and disciplined." Then to Ritsu. "Bears. Strong and sturdy and reliable."

"The bears and owls can be found in Frost Country, while the tigers reside in parts of the Hot Springs Country," Nekobaa explains. "It's as easy as expressing interest in a contract with those groups. They will see if you're worthy or not on their own."

Something to consider, then.

"How do you do that, Tamaki?" Ritsu asks.

"Um...I kind of just use my chakra and try to feel something I recognize, I think. Like how I can recognize what a cat feels like...something like that."

"Connecting with another person's wavelength, then..." Ritsu goes into deep thought.

"You okay?" you ask.

"I'm just considering something, sir...I'm fine."

"Okay, cool."

"We'll make sure to buy a bit of this and that before we leave," Hannah says. "You've been a great help to us, and we really appreciate it."

"Not a problem, children. All I ask is that you take care of yourselves out there. Too many young people are going out and dying for no reason. Disheartening is what it is. I have a feeling about you three, though. You in particular, boy."

"Me?"

"That's right. If your grandfather could come out of nowhere and shake up the world this much, I'm sure you can do the same if you put your mind to it. Pick a path, boy. Decide your own destiny, that's what men are born to do."

"My own destiny...been hearing that a lot lately. The old man really did put the world into a spin, and I can't escape it now. Then again, I was the one who set out looking for him, and if you look for a troublemaker, you're naturally gonna meet with trouble." You grin at the old woman. "Nothing else to do but go for it, yeah?"

"There you go. Anything else you need from this old woman? I can see your friends are planning to spend a fair bit..."

Hannah and Ritsu are looking over exotic weapons, and Tamaki is gathering up the pile of things they've committed to purchasing.
