So over the last few days I have been rereading old parts of the story and noted that the first person born on our station turned five around when the dome was complete and wondered what it would look like to a child who has sent their entire life on our relatively austere station. It is the first creative writing anything I have done in a few years but I hope people enjoy it.
Field Trip
Janine Tazi bounces in her seat staring ahead eager for the class to start. Not only was today her fifth birthday but the school was going on a field trip! Her cousin from earth bragged that his school went on field trips all the time and now she would get to go on one too. And Janine bet she would get to go somewhere cooler than a grocery store, like the dock, or the greenhouses.
As Janine thought about where they were going, she was startled by Mr. Owen speaking, "Alright alright, everyone settle down please." After waiting for everyone to quiet down he continued, "Now I know everyone is excited about our field trip today. But there are just a few things we need to go over first."
Unable to help herself Janine spoke up, "Mr. Owen you never told us where we are going."
"Oh did I not? My mistake. Well as they have just finished the more delicate aspects of construction, we will be visiting the dome today."
At this, the class broke out into chatter. The dome has been the talk of Little Klondike for nearly a year but in the last few months, more delicate work meant it was closed to anyone that was not working on it or needed to pass through it. So, no one in the class had seen what it looked like yet.
Janine was now squirming in excitement she had wanted to see the dome forever. Her mommy was working with the fish in it and talked about how pretty it was. She tried to get mommy to take her for the last two weeks but was always told no.
"Yes, yes I am sure you are all excited but the sooner I can finish the sooner we can all go see it." After a short pause, Mr. Owen continued, "Now although I got Mr. O'Rielly and Mr. Erikson to give permission for this visit. People are still working so I need you all to promise to stay near me and the other teachers alright?"
"Yes Mr. Owen."
Clapping with a small smile Mr. Owen continued "Alrighty then let us get going."
At that, the class started making their way over to the dome. When arriving at the entrance Mr. Own gave some last instructions, "Alright class listen up. When we get inside the left half of the dome has been cleared for our use so please stay on that side. Now we will have a talk about what went into building the dome. But I know no one will pay attention until you are given a chance to explore first. So when we get in you will have twenty minutes to explore before we break into our study groups. Now go have some fun."
At this, the dam broke as the class poured past him into the dome. Janine managed to be one of the first in before stopping to look around. Most of the inside is still hard at work with construction. But around a third of the floor has been roped off and left empty for the class to explore.
Eyes wide Janine looked around unsure where to look first before remembering her mommy talked about working on the fish walls. With this, she spun around and saw the wall around the entrance. Most of the wall was a window, but instead of showing space, it showed a giant pool of water with things swimming in it.
Running over and pressing her nose on the glass Janine started looking at all the fish. She had never seen anything like them in person. Just floating through the water, they looked like they were in space. Ignoring the little gravity, the asteroid had. After a few moments one swan directly under a light and seemed to almost glow like a star before continuing onwards and the shimmering scales dimmed to a twinkle.
Eventually, Janine pulled herself away, she only had a little time and there was a lot more to see. Looking around she saw around half the class crowded by one of the teachers who was showing them what looked like a thin wood pole sticking out of the floor with a green top. It almost looked like a tree, but all the movies showed trees to be big and that pole was smaller than her.
Not wanting to squeeze around everyone else Janine continued to look around before a cry caught her attention. "Mr. Owen the roof is missing!" Turning her head up Janine's eyes widened at what she saw. Instead of a steel ceiling or more fish water where there should be a roof open space greeted her. Any window shine missing. Scared she turned to the entrance crying out "Mr. Owen the roof really is missing!"
Mr. Owen turned to them from where he was watching some other students and gave a smile. "It's ok. The roof is still there it is just made of aerogel so we cannot see it. The windows are made of it too." He pointed to the closest window "See no glass reflection."
Turning to the window Janine slowly made her way over before giving it a poke. As her finger hit a solid object, she gave a firm nod and turned back. "Something is there Mr. Owen it is just see-through. Can I get a see-through roof for my room too? It's my birthday!"
Shaking his head Mr. Owen just smiled "I know, happy birthday. As for changing your roof, you will have to ask your parents later."
Nodding her head Janine intended to just that before turning back into the dome. With such a big space she may finally be able to play tag without getting in trouble! As she tried to run into the dome though she slipped on the floor. Luckily with the low gravity, she had plenty of time to catch herself before she hit anything.
As her hands hit the floor, they also hit a strange texture. The green flooring did not feel like a carpet but instead like salad. Under the leafy coating was dirt. Curious she pulled out some of the leaves to get a closer look as she stood back up.
"Janine do not pull out the grass. It is for everyone."
Janine looked up elated "This is grass? We have grass? It's so soft!" At this Janine tumbled back down onto the grass rolling around on it. Before she could stand back up, she felt someone press their hand on her back."
"Tag your it!"
Pushing herself back up Hanine saw her friends running away from her "No fair. I wasn't ready." At this, she started chasing them back laughter floating into the air as the workers across the dome stopped for a break watching the kids run around in the new open space.
By the time the field trip was over the entire class was covered in grass stains and exhausted. Yet everyone had a smile on their face as Mr. Owen brought them back to class with a small shake of his head. He only hoped the parents remember how to remove grass stains.
