The Grand Solar Rush - Asteroid colony management quest

I still think we need to do another mineral surveys. We are being told that our current mines are at capacity and them and refining are still the core industries that fuel our base. Another mine means more jobs so we can get more people and more exports when we currently have plenty of room in our contracted freighters. Plus each new mine has unlocked plenty of new options for industries and research as new metals open up new opportunities.

One personnel transport fitted with basic improvised weaponry. The Excelsior.

@Karf should we not have one more ship? We got the Excelsior, the newly bought ship, and the pirate ship we sized.

(Proud owner of a second vessel capable of interplanetary flight, as described above.)
About that, sir. I've checked with Hailey and Hiragi, and they both assure me that the pirate ship is, for all intents and purposes, legal salvage. I wouldn't take it out to any publicity missions, let alone a trip to Earth, but a simple milk run over to Prismdust is well within its capabilities. Well, once the engineers declare it safe, but we've got that much time

So should we not have a third ship?

The rule of thumb I have for whether something is an important ship, with the assosciated complexities, is if it can make the trip to Earth. The pirate ship, although larger than most such models, can not. Anything from its engine being too fuel-inefficient to the crew needing iodine boosters due to bad shielding to lacking sufficient signals boosting for proper comms to constantly leaking tiny amounts of atmospheric gas, etc. Think of it as ships and lifeboats: the latter don't get names (maybe they do, IDK, but you get the point).

@Karf can we do that? (i.e. roll a 2d100 for 1 task?)
Yes, but there's no overflow, you'll just be getting the best of two rolls in that case, the other effectively gets discarded.

Well, that interesting. Poor Rosseau, I'm becoming very fond of her. She's really been very reasonable about that time we arrested her and her entire staff at gunpoint, it speaks very well of her. A lesser person would have considered us an enemy forever.

Hosting the talks is quite a legitimacy boost, but I'm not sure we want attention focused on us in this climate. Still, if us hosting is even a minor increase in chances for peace we should do it. I'm really glad we have a world class plaza to impress people with!

One thing to keep in mind is that this will upset New Ireland

Yeah, that's a good point. I agree, we should do something to mollify them in the near future. Any ideas? Could that sports team thing help?

A DC of 70 is still high. I'd rather lower it further with mag shield, which will also unlock other things since it seems kind of like an opening tech

I recommend we hold off and decide once we've taken a look at the DCs.

And doubling down on an action will rarely be as valuable as doing two things at once, since we always have a lot on our plate.

I agree, this would be terribly inefficient. We have a LOT of actions that need doing. And if we have something we really need, we can use our favour instead.

Well, maybe having their commanders in the same local space will make their spacefighters slightly more hesitant to start firing in Little K's direction.

aaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Sports team should help a bit, otherwise the next conference will be coming up soon. Lets see what they want and if we can throw them a bone there. If they want diplomatic grants again that would not be the worst thing for us. Other than that? See if we can buy anything from them. We can export food and air to them and if they have something we can use setting up a trade route would at least give us stronger ties and help us both.

don't think this is much of a vote honestly nobody's voted to not take the talks and weed be silly not too, also did we ever get anything from those partially decrypted coms ?

Wait, then what is Skookum from the last turn?
With the Excelsior serving as a reliable backup and the newly rechristened Skookum bouncing back and forth between Prismdust and the resort, none of your own schedules are adversely impacted either.
Isn't that the pirate ship? It's not the new ship, that one didn't have a name at that point.

One of the things that we could do is try to push New Ireland as the heart of the local and EU diplomatic efforts, whilst we end up being the 'neutral ground' of the sector. It does take away some of the more prestigious events from them, but also the more risky ones. And it's not like all the international diplomacy running through this sector will need neutral ground.

Could we start a colony on the direct opposite side of the asteroid from us and expand out from there as well? We could even dig a tunnel for a direct tram line to it for easier expansion.

That seems like a lot of work for little reward. The only reason this type of neutral ground is needed in the first place is due to the two fleets camping over the blacksite. This does not seem likely to come up again. Besides that it would require us to maintain our neutrality when their seem to be more tangible benefits to cooperating with the EU such as the Hospital concessions and more grants (The extra action grants came from EU funding). I think it is better to let NI do its own thing and focus on our "vassel" Primdust and our smaller trade partner Deckard station and work to rope them closer in.

We could but their is no reason to. With the ejection of the EU mission, and now this summit there is no need to build on for political reasons. We have no known mineral deposits over their so their or industries that need to be kept far away from the rest so no need economically. And we still have plenty of room to expand around our home base so no need to expand demographically. Until their is a reason to do such an expansion it seems much more efficient to continue to develop our main base than divert attention building up a second colony when their is no reason to do so.

Imagine if the Blacksite really IS from alien life. This would better show why both sides don't want to back down on this issue.

That's because the EU was the only one who we interacted with. I imagine if it had been the US we probably would have also gotten grants, if perhaps for different stuff.

Also it appears grant money is no longer available. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if both sides pulled out of the area after this entire fiasco. Which has good and bad outcomes.

Yeah, a pretty predictable outcome, but it's still a quest and this is an important choice. When you say decrypted comms, which ones do you mean? Encryption is an ever-evolving race, not one-and-done. The communications between Lena and her sister remain encrypted, although mostly it was either private talk or they're forwarding publications that caught their eye to the other.

Wait, then what is Skookum from the last turn?

Yes, I should specify: it made the text flow better to give the pirate ship a (nick)name, but you shouldn't consider it a strategic and reliable asset. It'll work in the background to make some of the deliveries, but you won't take it to battle or some important meeting (most likely, who knows what the IRL future will bring).
