The Grand Solar Rush - Asteroid colony management quest

Yikes, we have been partitioned without our notice. That might bring problems.

or opportunities if EU/US relations go hot. Id say we should talk to new Ireland next. Even if we have to accept EU hegemony for now building a block locally will be key.

Looks like there's not much we can do about the EU right now if it was an international agreement between all the powers. They're hands off for now, so we can deal with the EU if they get to involved in governing us or something.

[X] Leave your evening blank, just let them come to you.

I'm not ok with accepting NI being the local leader just yet. I feel like we should atleast compete with them for that. I see us being the ones to set up a meeting with them as a sign of bowing out of the competition to be local leaders. Let's not forget that NI tried slighting us with the ship offer, they clearly see us as competitors. I think we should see who comes to us, weigh our options.

I'm gonna laugh if we're not actually important enough for people to come to us.

"Thank you," you join her in the less formal setting, "Perhaps you could elaborate a bit on this sectioning of the belt. I've been out of the Earth infosphere for nearly a decade by now, but when I started my venture, there definitely was no such initiative."

"It's more recent than that, yes. To put it bluntly, the big three have carved and cut the belt into degrees of influence designed to be equal in proportion and to promote cooperation and trade. Other nations have their own sectors too, of course, but it's all a matter of power in the end, so they get relative scraps. The edge of this EU sector runs about between you and Prismdust, they're technically Chinese for now, but we're negotiating a trade as the CCP shifts focus to the Outer Belt, so they're invited here."

Now why does this sound familiar..?

"Where did you wish to go?" he asked me.
"Space," I said.
"Of course. But where in space?"
"I don't know yet," I said. "Just space. Deep Space. Free Space."
The clerk sighed wearily. "You'll have to be more explicit than that, if you want a clearance. Are you going to settle on a planet in American Space? Or did you wish to emigrate to British Space? Or Dutch Space? Or French Space?"
"I didn't know space could be owned," I said.
"Then you don't keep up with the times," he told me, with a superior smirk. "The United States has claimed all space between coordinates 2XA and D2B, except for a small and relatively unimportant segment which is claimed by Mexico. The Soviet Union has coordinates 3DB to LO2 — a very bleak region, I can assure you. And then there is the Belgian Grant, the Chinese Grant, the Ceylonese Grant, the Nigerian Grant —"
I stopped him. "Where is Free Space?" I asked.
"There is none."
"None at all? How far do the boundary lines extend?"
"To infinity," he told me proudly.

"Citizen in Space", Robert Sheckley.

What is Little Klondike known for?

Besides the promotion videos and the Rousseau Incident we kept largely to ourselves. The aerogel could be invaluable, but we haven't announced anything, and we didn't take contracts to manufacture anything. The nanites are advanced stuff, but likewise we haven't advertised them. We have a hospital, and a local supply of food - and that is all people know about us.

Oh, and I suppose now there is a ship.

Who would come to us and what for? I think we need to take initiative in these talks. NI was here before us, and it shows. If we want to be their rival, we need to do some legwork and put our name out there.

- the strangest thing in this alternate universe is that Russia is part if the EU and is not its main actor, maybe the fall if the Soviet Union in this timeline is far worst which allowed the western powers to control them

I'm like eighty percent sure we're their biggest rival around, so if they undermine our authority from the get-go, they'll have an easier time."

I don't exactly know what we're known for, but we're seen as the biggest rival to NI so anyone who might not be interesed in NI becoming leader of the power bloc or have issues with them should come to us.

In economic terms, Russia is about equivalent to Italy, or roughly half as much as France or Germany. They'd be a strong voice, since they're on the high end and their economy would also get a facelift with no sanctions and better economic relations with the EU, but it's not too surprising there would be other voices as strong or stronger.

[X] You know the Children of Dreamers are present, talk to them.
Have we been partitioned to USA?

Is no one curious about how some seemingly crazy cultists can afford 2 ships?

hmmm I don't like being carved up into zones of influence but it should be expected. Hopefully the EU is too busy dealing with issues closer to home to deal with us. Also don't like how close we are to China's zone, hopefully they continue to neglect the New Belt for the Outer Belt.

It is worth noting I doubt the EU and US will enter a shooting war. The shear destruction that would result from that makes it near unimaginable. If tensions continue to escalate we could see a restart of Cold War era proxy wars a rise in privateers.

I was just thinking the other day about how we would expand in the future if we ever start to outgrow our asteroid. If we're in EU space they definitely won't like us to expand to more bases. A single base is easier to ignore than a growing nation. But that's probably for later, if at all. Another thing we should probably look out for is showing our hand to quickly with our special aerogel. With it's ability to create large scale ships just with this material, and the current spike in demand for ships in general it might have the EU re-evaluating our relationship again.

With New Ireland aiming to make themselves the leader of this quadrant, are we even a large enough to contest them currently? They currently have around triple our population size, with the infrastructure for much more already built. It may be best to lay low for now, and see about developing ourselves into a more industrial/science powerhouse.

My issue with this is that the aerogel is too valuable. Right now the EU has enough issues at home and poor enough power projection that it is not worth escalating the situation with us. But if we have access to a near one of a kind super material and are within what is internationally accepted as their space? Then the calculus changes and it may become worth dealing with us by force. It would not be hard, we have what? 40-60 men with poor guns and basic armor and no space combat abilities? The EU could send a single armed gunship with marines and some drones and we would be helpless. I feel we need to be a bit materialistically stronger so it would actually take a bit of effort to conquer us and establish some diplomatic ties to other powers so people would care if we were taken over before we show the world the aerogel.

Not to mention the part of the Belt we are in is very close to the boarder of China's zone of influence. So they may also make a play at us if they feel they could. And with the EU not being our biggest fan and currently busy dealing with the US they may just make a play for us directly or through a patsy. Actually the EU could also use a patsy to deal with us.

Changing. The gel must be a state secret for as long as possible. I suspect our advisor informed her sister of it though.

We live on the largest rocky body around in our local sector, so space isn't really a problem. That being said the second largest rocky body around is quite close by, so if we're really concerned about clay for future expansion we should probably lasso it to stake a claim before the EU grants it to somebody else.

With respect to New Ireland, we aren't as large as they are, but we have the single largest growth potential out of all of our neighbors. We're also mostly self sufficient, which is a pretty big step above everybody else - our relative economic position is only going to get better and better.

I don't really want to meet with the leader of NI just yet so I'll switch to this.

We'll probably need to try to negotiate some sort of "territorial space" in order to have some kind or authority over the resources and space available to us.

Additionally, if we ever want to do something in orbit, we should have some breathing room without immediately running into someone else's space.
