Wow, I really wasn't expecting this level of positive reception. I got a notification two days ago that this fic ended up #3 on the weekly Most Watched list for SV, which is just absolutely insane to me.

I'm not gonna lie, I started this fic with zero plans for the future. I got struck by an inspiration train while I was supposed to be doing homework and cranked out the first chapter in about three hours, and I really wasn't expecting this to garner so much attention.

I think the best course of action is probably just to pretend things are business as usual. I've got several storylines involving the Wards, Taylor, and the Trio, and I'm not sure which one to work on first. The current options are:
  1. The Trio
  2. Taylor
  3. Aegis
  4. Gallant
  5. Vista
  6. Clockblocker
  7. Kid Win
The goal is to have them meet up and have their storylines merge quickly into a more manageable 2-3 groups, so that I'm not running a madhouse of 7 separate storylines.

I was thinking about putting it up to a vote, but I'll probably just work on whichever captures my muse and post as I finish. The discussion has been great so far- some of the ideas, and probably some of the memes, might even end up in the story. If you've got any preferences for who you'd like to see first, or more ideas, that'd be pretty neat, because this story is still very much in the early planning stages.
There has been a Touhou craze recently in the Worm fanfic side. I mean, it's Worm and Touhou, what more could you ask?
Still! Take your time if you need it! I personally would choose for Taylor first.
Edit: damn, I guess it's kid win. Oh well.

Waltz of the Wilted Flower: In which Kasen finds a sickly child
[Touhou ☯ Music Box/Waltz] Battlefield of the Flower Threshold - By SilentBird

It was a peaceful day in the Great Youkai Forest, Kasen reflected internally.

The dense tangle of woods surrounding Youkai Mountain had a reputation for being a dangerous, wild place- and it most certainly was, for ordinary humans at least.

But Kasen Ibaraki was neither ordinary nor human. While she took great pains to conceal her non-human traits from prying eyes- there was no hiding the presence of strength and magical power that rolled off of her from any magically sensitive creature.

Kasen was known in these woods. The flesh of a hermit was considered a rare delicacy by most Youkai, but only the most foolish or bold of wild beasts and feral Youkai would seek to turn her into a meal.

For her, strolling through the forest was usually an idle, peaceful affair. Once every few weeks, she left the boundaries of her hidden realm, and went to meditate at a clearing with a small lake at the base of the mountain filled by the Waterfall of Nine Heavens.

She took a moment to contemplate nature and center herself in it, breathing deeply of the crisp, fresh mountain air, free from any of the impurities created by civilization.

She focused on filling her senses with the world around her- the singing of birds, the rustle of the underbrush as small animals scampered across the ground, the beautiful Aralia trees in autumn colors and their gracefully falling leaves.

Understanding the ways of nature, and the part Kasen played in it as a natural being, was a keystone on the mountain hermit's path to achieving enlightenment. As she approached the forest clearing, she continued to meditate on her surroundings.

The pond was perfect for such purposes, she reflected. The towering trees with their statuesque bulk around it, their thin branches swaying gently in the breeze…

The tranquil waters, the small stick-legged insects and dragonflies skimming across its surface, leaving the tiniest of ripples in their wake-

-and the body garbed in strange baggy black clothes smeared with blood, garbage, and feces, floating face-down in the pond.

…Oh dear. Kasen thought faintly to herself.

It would be a misconstruction to say that Kasen fell into a panic. While she led a largely peaceful life by choice these days, she was no stranger to the sight of depravity and bloodshed, or to the desecration of the dead.

Finding a corpse here, though, at a place she routinely went to meditate, made the hairs on the back of her neck bristle and stand up on edge.

She fell into a combat-ready stance, swiftly scanning her surroundings and opening up her senses.

…Kasen couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary. There was nothing larger than a hare near her within five tsubo. (~180 feet^2) The trees continued to rustle peacefully in the gentle autumn breeze. The small animals were behaving normally, going about their lives without a trace of fear or alarm. Some of the insects were congregating on the corpse's stained clothing, but decay had not yet begun to set into its flesh- the stench was horrendous, though.

She let out a weary sigh, before straightening herself up and folding her hands respectfully in front of her as she approached the lake.

…Death was simply part of nature- as all things were. Kasen had long since grown used to it, although the many unknown factors of this incident still unsettled her.

Wrinkling her nose at the smell, she went in to go inspect the body. Only sheer discipline and force of will allowed her to swallow her instinctive revulsion as she approached. She covered her nose with her prosthetic arm's cloth, breathing slowly and steadily through her mouth.

The smell was even worse up close- the rotten blood had been given time to decay, and the fluids from human waste and garbage had marinated into a truly disgusting odor.

Pushing aside a stray thought of dismay at the corruption tainting the waters, Kasen continued to examine the corpse in its original state before she went through with removing it.

It was strange- despite the horrendous smell, the body itself had yet to start to decompose. As best as Kasen could tell, it had most likely been left in some kind of trash heap. The work of a criminal from the human village perhaps, attempting to dispose of their kill?

Still, even a feral Youkai would likely balk at consuming something in such a state.

Kasen placed her flesh-and-blood hand on her chin and scrunched her brows together.

While leaving a human body overnight in the Great Youkai Forest was a sensible enough way to cover up a murder, this place was deep into the heart of the Forest, near the Mountain itself.

It made no sense to travel all this way out- unless you were worried about detection, in which case it made a certain warped sort of sense.

It would have to be a strong or particularly stealthy criminal though, in order to drag the body all this way without being caught or eaten by Youkai.

The clothes were odd and foreign as well, with strange fabric of bizarrely fine make and stitching, despite their unfashionable dark gray color and loose-fitting nature.

A stream of bubbles leaked from their mouth into the bloodied waters. Kasen's eyes widened.

Quickly, she flipped the body over with her foot, heedless of the filth coming in contact with her shoe.

The human erupted into a coughing fit as they splashed onto their back, wracking their lungs to eject as much water as they could, before falling still.

Kasen knelt down and pressed her fingers against the side of their throat, grimacing and turning her face aside at the renewed onslaught against her senses.

The human was breathing clearly, if shakily and unsteadily. They must have not swallowed much pond water before she got to them. Their pulse was fast and erratic, but slowly evening out as Kasen monitored her.

Their skin was feverish and hot to the touch. The child was clearly deathly ill, unsurprisingly given the circumstances. They were soaked to the bone, and covered in filth.

Kasen thought rapidly. The girl was still alive- how could something like this happen?

It could still have been some human criminal, or perhaps some especially malevolent spirit or Youkai- outsourcing the work of murder to stray animals, or feral Youkai, instead of finishing the deed themselves.

It could also have been an intentional act of cruelty- leaving the girl to die a slow, painful death stranded in the wilderness. Kasen found herself growing increasingly wrathful at the thought, before forcing her turbulent emotions down.

The girl couldn't have been left here long ago, given that she'd avoided drowning in the pond. Still, Kasen needed to tend to the child as soon as possible, not engage in a wild goose chase for a dangerous criminal.

Kasen brought her hand to her mouth to whistle, before wincing and thinking better of it. She wiped her cloth arm off on her pants and used that instead, summoning Kume, who was circling overhead.

The giant eagle dove down and landed beside her, disturbing the waters further and kicking up a miniature storm of dust and leaves. Kasen took a brief moment to mourn the total loss of her meditation pond's tranquility. The waters were much too contaminated now for her purposes.

"Search the area for anyone with this girl's scent on them. The one who did this to her can't have gotten far." Kasen commanded her servant.

Kume sniffed the girl, before recoiling with visible disgust. He squawked loudly and reproachfully at Kasen, flaring his wings in dismay.

"Yes, I apologize. I should have warned you." Kasen sighed. "Just do it. It shouldn't be hard to pick out that odor. Disable and bring them to me if you can- if not, try to remember as many details about their appearance as possible."

Mollified, Kume signaled his agreement with a sharp, jerky nod, before flapping his massive wings and taking to the skies in a blast of wind.

Gingerly, Kasen knelt down and picked up the human child, forcing herself to ignore the nauseating way the wet garment squelched against the front of her clothes.

Kasen would need to wash this set once she was done. Maybe even burn it. The impurity from touching human feces surely warranted such a response.

The girl's body- and the human was a girl, despite her lack of development- was thin and frail in Kasen's hands, although not quite malnourished. She shivered as Kasen touched her.

She floated into the air, before flying back towards her hidden realm with the girl in her arms, paying careful attention to avoid jostling the sickly child any more than necessary.

Ah yes! New mother figure for TayTay!
This is one of the best options for her, it will allow her to heal and also make connections to the Hakurei if needed. Let's just hope she doesn't encounter the other 'friends' of Kasen.

So considering it is Kasen, there is a good chance that Taylor might become an Oni if the hermit judges that there is no other way to save her life other than having her drink from the Sake box.

I'm a little bit confused by this- which friends are you talking about, again? Other than Yukari herself, and maybe Suika, I can't think of any of Kasen's acquaintances that would be particularly bad news for Taylor.

While not really, technically, friends, I was referring to the likes of Tenshi, Miko, or even Okina.
People who would leave some bad impressions on Taylor.

The box is like Chekhov's gun. If you know that there's a magic box that turns people into Youkai and can be used to heal any degree of injury, it's a sucker's bet to say that someone will be mortally injured, and someone will be losing their humanity irrevocably.

It's the when, who, and where that matters. The 'if' was never in question.

I thought the oni-ification was temporary. Or was that just if the imbiber had no injuries? I remember there was a chapter of WaHH where Reimu and friends drank from it and came out fine.

It is only a temporary mental Oni-fication in the event that there are no injuries. I'd imagine that the infection and other stuff that Taylor is suffering probably counts.

Yukari honked the truck's horn from behind the wheel, smiling widely. "Why, hello there fellow kids!"
I love this so much already, and the best part of this entire story is the idea of Yukari taking a break from trains to drive truck kun around and "acquire" some hero's for training with driving that makes it seem like she just came off a massive bender. I half expected her to leave an IOU note for Piggot when she stopped by the PRT building for all the Wards she ran over.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the story! Comments like these make my day.

I gotta remember the part about the IOU note for later- that's bloody perfect, it is. A bit brazen, but nothing about Yukari's approach so far has been the most subtle.

Given the wards are (generally) troubled youths, perhaps she could lend her Sumireko? She's a teenager, does have powers and is troubled enough to 3D print gun(s).

It's a funny idea, but can you imagine that kind of trade? Instead of going to a magical fantasy wonderland when she falls asleep, Sumireko suddenly finds herself in the grimy backstreets of Brockton Bay, complete with Neo-Nazis, Yakuza, drug dealers and corrupt police officers.

Is Taylor going to be the protagonist, as usual in Worm fics? Or is this going in another direction we can't see? It seems interesting all the same, though. More Touhou is always great.

Taylor is going to be one of the protagonists- Yukari went and borrowed a rather large number of children, after all, and I intend to put them all to good use.

I agree, more Touhou is always great. I wish there were more Worm/Touhou crossovers that involve travel between the two worlds. I've got a bunch of story ideas circling around the concept, ranging from "Yuyuko gets isekaied to Worm and starts phasing into random people's houses and raiding their fridges" to "Cirno gets lost, asks Lung for directions, gets into a fight, and 'wins' by freezing him into an ice-cube, victory-posing on top of him, and flying away before he can melt his way out and incinerate her."

That last one is actually a fully-fleshed out 6k word story in my google docs that never made it past the Lung fight scene.

There's also a few more ideas I won't mention, since there's a good chance I'll end up including them in this story.

I do have something like that in ao3... And those concepts sound really fun! You should write them, even if they're omakes or one shots.
Keep at it and don't give up!
