The Gamer Discussion, Fic Ideas, and Recommendation Thread

You could just get MaP and MaC. That is, Magical Power and Magical Control.
The problem is that Control seems to tap out after a certain point, like an accuracy stat. Once you get to 100%, there's no point in raising it anymore. Hence the system further up the page having a control-like stat that continues to give benefits regardless of how high it is.

Unless the percentage depends on the ratio between Power and Control, for example, if you have 20 MaP you must have 60 MaC to have 100% control. This way the user will have problem being extremely powerful while maintaining perfect control, as well as having the MaC be more dynamic, every time you add power you got to spend on control to keep that nice round 100% and you have to keep in mind how worth it is for you build. Basically the magical version of balancing Dexterity and a Strength in a warrior type character, if you want to use telepathic magic you will mostly need Control and little Power, the opposite for a more fireball-happy character.

I would think that reaching perfect control would be impossible. The more you have to work with the harder it is to control things perfectly and having control give regen and magic resist means that having actually perfect control would mean complete immunity and infinite instant regen. Much like how perfect accuracy is impossible due to some things being harder to aim and the fact that if you might want to hit a small target moving at significant fractions of C while several light years away or some shit like that. Admittedly accuracy is a lot harder to scale up like that.

With my Pokemon/Gamer/Si fic, what would be the best way to find out that they have the Gamer ability?
they got Reincarnated as a Wimpod and have just hatched.

also, if someone were to become a Gamer as a race thats entire thing is gambling and luck manipulation, would there be any way to make it work?

It'd probably be in either the first fight (HP/MP Bars) or on level up (status auto-opening to allow point distribution).

Well, the Battle Music?
A status effect of "You have recently hatched, +100% XP gain for 48 hours"
"Wimpod has learned Sand Attack lv1. Wimpod had learned Struggle Bug lv1"
A tutorial popup?

As for the other question, I think fundamentally no, simply because low LUK is Spiderman and high LUK is Mary Sue. Or you make LUK closer to Games, where it merely influences loot drop and crit chance.

Have you guys read Gamer Files - by Max B
It's a Naruto gamer fic but it has Kiba facing off against Gaara in the Churning exams.
The Gamer in the story was Naruto but Kiba stole his shine in a big way. I think it's that story.
The author had Kiba use his giant two headed wolf technique in combination with the giant tsuuga which ia called Garooga to eke out a win. It was such an amazing twist! The author justified the win saying Gaara transforming into the One Tail left him a bit disoriented for a few moments and Kiba was always planning to transform at the drop of a hat and used the Garooga and hit Gaara with it at the top. The silence was deafening and the entire battle scene between them was written quite well. It propelled Kiba to stardom where Danzo kept demanding to train him and his mother refusing. The story stopped a chapter or two after that.
Yeah I think that's the only Naruto fic the ever showed Kiba some love.

Kiba as a Gamer would be intersting because he's pretty ambitious and he'll give Naruto actual competition in being Hokage. Maybe a self insert would do better and be more interesting in that I'm an asshole and will go on a conquering spree if I got powerful enough to stomp out Akatsuki and become Hokage. Maybe a civil war in where Naruto tries to take over.

Which is why a lot of other systems remove LUK from their systems. I'm reasonably sure Pokemon doesn't have a LUK stat either, but if it does you can look up what it does.

They have real world luck, and a few alterations to the success chance.
Accuracy, Crit Chance, Capture Rates, rolling for IVs when catching new Poke or Breeding them and the local gambling den.

That's about it, no stat to influence all dice rolls.

well, not for a pokemon SI...
more like a Ecaflip SI
Only confirmed gamblers can appear to the god Ecaflip. They are the only ones who will find mercy in the eyes of the god and who can receive his favours. As for the others, some clever kitties will be shown what their future holds, but you can bet that the god Ecaflip, always a bit mischievous, will send anyone he doesn't like to the beyond... but give them a chance to escape...
What's the life of a disciple of Ecaflip like? It's a life of getting into sticky situations, landing a windfall and then swiftly losing just as much if not more... If you're in a tavern and you hear somebody betting kamas, you can be sure there's an Ecaflip around, he'll either be betting or looking carefully at the scene, rolling a coin between his fingers... A happy Ecaflip gambles all the time, for everything and for nothing - but be careful, he takes gambling very seriously. He can even risk his life on a throw of the dice. Do you know anyone that crazy? Pretty sure I don't.
The Ecaflip mind set is clear on one thing: there's no such thing as a coincidence. To the layman, they appear to leave things to good fortune or misfortune, but the Ecaflip disciple knows that when he decides to play, it's his destiny!
Ecaflips are great warriors skilled in both team fights and solo fights. It ought to be noted, though, that if an Ecaflip is going to fight with other adventurers, his teammates would do well to have a similar life philosophy... Although Ecaflip magic is renowned for its destructive powers, it is also governed by the laws of fate and can backfire on the allies that it's supposed to support, hence the misunderstandings and even the insults exchanged on battlefields. It's true that when an Ecaflip prepares to cast "All or Nothing", it can be quite harrowing for both enemies and allies!

Ah.
An Ecaflip would think a LUK stat is cheating and try to keep it low. Because high LUK is more consistent wins. That is not what that paragraph tells us.

ah, ok.
maybe they would have naturally higher luck, but a higher chance for things to go wrong?
so when things go right, they REALLY go right, but if it goes wrong....well..
one of the Ecaflip Demigods was really good at gambling and other luck based things, such as throwing a basketball in a random direction, only for it to bounce off random things (and his rivals head) only to land in the basket, except at times where they needed it the most, like betting their engagement ring (and therefore the love it symbolizes) and losing, after-which his Fiance's memories of him vanish completely.

As this seems to be very much devolving away from canon "The Gamer" and associated system into LitRPG stuff (different systems to the gamer, but similar premises) I'd like to recommend

The Arcane Emperor by Aternus on RR - The Arcane Emperor | RoyalRoadL

A young man who is a mediocre mage on Earth with barely any talent creates a spell that should allow him to phase through a door. Instead it transports him to another world, which is ruled by a game system rather than the standard physics we know on earth.

And

The legend of Randidly Ghosthound by puddles4263 also on RR - The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound | RoyalRoadL

Earth is absorbed by the Nexus, and integrated into the System. Randidly happens to be in a tunnel that gets turned into a high level dungeon, and so has to learn to survive without the softness of the "newbie" area that most of the rest of the world is part of. Another nexus player helps him to survive until they beat the dungeon, and then the story follows him as he helps found a newbie village and explores the world looking for news of his friends.

Hey, I've got a question pertaining to recommendations. Is this thread specifically for stories using the Gamer's Generic RPG System intergrated into the story or is it for all gaming-type systems being integrated into the story?

I'd say that the particular system doesn't matter. For me, it's when video game conventions start taking the place of physical laws.

I'm from the SI thread as well. I was wondering what I can do with my fanfic as I'm just using The Gamer as an excuse on why the Borderlands mechanics work in universe and the SI's skill trees (Which are based on fighting game characters) are even a thing.

Do I just do what I'm doing or do I just not use The Gamer and bring in a ROB?

You don't need to explain where the Gamer powers come from. What you do need to do is know how those powers work. For instance: LUK. Avoid it.
Also, IIRC, the HUD elements in Borderlands are explained by the ECHO device, though I'm not sure if skill trees are supposed to be an actual in-universe thing.
Having a Gamer system without stat points and a fixed set of skills avoids a lot of the typical powercreep issues. Though do make sure that you determine the skill tree out in advance.

Thank you. This just what I needed to hear. Seriously, it was dead for awhile on this as some people in the self insert thread told me it would be 'in name only'.

I'm making three skill trees because every other Vault Hunter (Badass mercenaries who are the series equivalent to Jedi Knights from Star Wars) has three. They are:

Shotokan: This lets the SI use a balanced Jack of all Trades skill set that lets him have a flying uppercut that draws enemies in, a fireball/energy ball that he can spam and a rush down attack that has invincibility frames. Characters from this archetype include: Ryu, Ken Masters, Ryo Sakazaki, Robert Garcia, Takuma Sakazaki and Akuma. The name comes from an error from Capcom USA saying that Ryu and Ken were practitioners of Shotokan Karate. They weren't but the name stuck and it's where the term Shotoclone comes from.

Strategic Attack Sargent: The SI gets powerful abilities that have charge times and thus he needs to think out his battle plans (not that the other skill trees don't but this one requires it) to utilize these skills with his gunplay. Characters from the archetype: Guile, Charlie Nash, Heidern and his adopted daughter Leona. The name comes from the Special Air Service and generally what the player needs to do with these characters to get good at using them.

CQC : The SI get powerful command grabs to deal massive damage up-close. The SI has to be at grabbing distance to connect so this might be good for certain types of enemies. Characters based of this archetype: Zangeif, Blue Mary, R. Mika and Tizoc. Name comes from Metal Gear Solid 3 where said martial art was retconned into the franchise.

Class packs are shaped in the form of rarity: White is a Wii Remote, Green is an Xbox 360 controller, Blue is a PS3 controller, Purple is a low quality traveling fight stick based on the MadCatz brand, Orange is a high quality traveling fight stick based on the Hori brand, Pearl is a PS1 controller.
