The Gamer Discussion, Fic Ideas, and Recommendation Thread

hmm.....
Guardians of Gahoole Gamer SI fic?

....but as a Penguin.

that wakes up near the beginning of the series, NEAR the beginning of the series.

their struggles on whether or not to interfere in the story, or find a way to somewhere cold, out of the way...

Are there any Gamer fics about the actual canon story itself? I don't mind cross over's but it seems odd that there aren't many (or any at all really) fics about the canon story itself. I'd love to read someone trying to take a crack at exploring the original web toon's world and expanding on it that the author failed to do and spent too much time focusing on Jee-Han's grinding and didn't properly construct a plot to follow.

Did you read the rest of this thread? There should be some recommended?

To be honest, I know next to nothing about the original manwah, so I don't know enough about its setting to say what you could write in it aside from "a Gamer fic." What is Gaia's purpose in giving Jee-Han this power suite, and what does he do beyond grinding?

Sticking "The Gamer" power suite in other settings pits its power set against those settings' threats. If you did the reverse - say, dropped Skitter into the Gamer setting - what would Skitter find herself engaging? Would it be a slice of life story where she also has superpowers, or is there something that would draw her into violent conflict?

There's the Abyss, which is basically magical Amazon that is both the enemy of all unaffiliated gift users and also super useful.

There are a large amount of magical factions, which do stuff like Necromancy, Golem building, etc and do attacks on other groups if they can't negotiate for their goals.

Martial Artists have clans of some sort and also teach magical martial arts in dojos- they seem to be a powerful faction in Korea at least.

This is just from the first 70 chapters, I'm sure they'll be more to come but I haven't read it.

The important thing is that powers are very generic- they don't have special bells and doodads to use them (except maybe Sung ah with the Black Soul). You won't have an Abhorsen here, you'll be more likely to find a pulp fantasy Necromancer or Exorcist.

The power systems are also broad enough to simulate any superpower that isn't mechanics based. (Like I haven't seen any Cyborgs yet and the gun concept doesn't work, but magic and martial arts do).

In my personal opinion, The Gamer and Re:Monster are quite similar in this way - they have a really great initial concept, but the worldbuilding and characters are too boring to be memorable, and you can't write about what you barely remember. They just work better as crossover fodder.

Or to remake to be Memorable. Make Rou less of a sociopath or give Jee Han an extra Mechanic (hello persona social links!) and you can expand on the world a bit more

The one thing in the Gamer that is not touched apon much is the Abyss. Or more accurately is the Magical Amazon/Ebay/Black Market online site. Is it restricted to buying only in the country or is it world wide? Can one buy stuff from a regular credit card or is it just cash?

So long as a Author does not over use the Abyss Magical Amazon, the MC will not get OP unless the MC had an infinite credit card to use on the site. But then the Abyss community will get suspicious on How someone can spend lets say 1 Centillion or 10^303 worth of stuff without getting blacklisted on the site.

In Gamer Canon Everyone knew that the Gamer could make money out of thin air. But not enough to crash the Magical website. Other wise he would have been visited by someone from high in the Magical site company to tell him to restrict his spending.

From what I gather is that not even the most Wealthy person in the Gamer universe would be able to buy a Quarter of the stuff on the Site without going broke.

He buys European books, so presumably it's international.

Didn't he generate a few million $ worth of Korean-Money? That's nothing compared to the funds a Faction can put down.
If the most wealthy person can't buy a quarter then the owners of the Site should be the most wealthy in Net Assets. It's like saying "No-one is rich enough to buy Google"

I think the abyss is more like ebay and the post office combined than amazon. So they make a small percentage off of each transaction. This is why it's not an oxymoron .

I'd read a fic about that one joke panel about an alternate universe version of Jee-Han as a girl whose powers were based slightly more on a dating sim. Also, you know what was a really interesting idea I only saw once to fix the issue of the gamer rocketing past any credible threat if they aren't an idiot? There was this short lived Star Wars quest where all force users were The Gamer. And I really like the idea of just replacing a setting's bullshit with the Gamer.

This is actually an interesting point, because it says a lot about the difference between fiction in general and games in general. Games often seek an advancement mechanic. Fiction, even if it has advancement, typically is much more static in its approach to it. Yes, people get better, but usually in terms of HOW they use WHAT they have. And occasionally in getting new things. Games have things get stronger primarily through raw numbers: you get BIGGER at what you can do.

The best idea I ever found was to implement a level cap. Then you could get those super powerful enemies the heroes have no chance to defeat yet and put them over the level cap.

That was mine by the way.
I got rid of the notes, but I can still remember some of it. Maybe I'll revisit it, make it a fic instead of a Quest (that's my main issue basically, making quests out of fics). Focus on Luke or Leia rather than an OC.
Or I could go crazy and make Anakin the MC. Have him be seduced by the Troll side and start noob griefing the Younglings for XP

I will admit, I got the idea from a (not great) Harry Potter Gamer fic, which had Wizards all being Gamers and Harry was special, the only one with a Save Game. It was written back before The Gamer took over from the 'Game of the year' style fics I believe.

The main threat of a Gamer must be a more experienced Gamer, or a more advantaged Gamer, or an ancient skilled badass because the power is designed to ramp hard.
Villains can't expand in scope as fast as a Gamer, that's the point of the Power, so you must give the Villain the same power or have them start out godly powerful and have the protagonist reach for them.

Is it the page quote from Sudden Game Interface? Harry Potter and the Munchkins or something.

I've read through this entire thread and I haven't really found what I'm looking for in terms of canon Gamer fics. I read New Game Plus that has an interesting premise but the author hasn't updated that in years, not even mentioning the noticeable problems. There are a few on FF.Net I'm currently browsing through (such as The Female Gamer and The Gamer - Restart) so I'll see if these have what i'm looking for.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Why exactly did Gaia give Jee-Han his powers? What exactly is Gaia itself? And how does the rest of the world think about living in a world where some divine god/goddess is just handing out superpowers as if they're skittles? I'm not expecting the original author to go into this since he's clearly not planned that far ahead.

Oh definitely. I actually thought it would be a funny idea if someone in The Gamer had the MC from Re:Monster's powers, which was the ability to learn skills through eating things. It'd make for some funny interactions with Jee-Han over whose more OP.

She gave him Gamer powers because he was a gamer.
The spirit of the planet / God
Only those with powers know about her, and they probably really like it.
They aren't skittles, very few people relative to global population have powers. And they seem at least partially genetic, passing down family lines while also spontaneously generating in new people. Jee-Han's best friend comes from a clan of people with the exact same set of abilities.

I should have been more specific. What I meant to say before was that was Jee-Han the only person who was granted the power of the Gamer? He's not the only person in the world who cherishes games to that extent and I can't believe that he was conveniently the first person in the entire world who cherished games to receive that power so why him?

Because:
1. He was the first, being spontaneously granted powers seems to be rare, it happening late enough in life to trigger off a personal obsession seems to be a subset of that and so by definition even less common
2. Other Gamers didn't have a convenient entry into the higher tier magical society and so are unknown or accidentally fell afoul of Da Rulez, so got ganked by Gaia or depowered or something
3. Other Gamers fucked up and died early. Ever tried IronMan Mode, that shit is hard.
4. Other Gamers exist but keep their power secret and thus aren't known to the Protagonist and his network. Perhaps an American Gamer

So, another observation I've noticed. I'm always skeptical when the MC gains multiple points of Int/Wis in quick succession through an internal monologue.

How so? I mean, sure, if the MC's just rambling without actually thinking about solutions to a problem, then they shouldn't be getting any points.

However, if the MC is thinking of solutions to a, well, I suppose calling it a "big problem" , then they should be getting points, the amount itself depending on the solution they came up with, how smart/wise the solution is and some other miscellaneous factors.
