The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

Im voting mostly for the social scenes I want to see, though I'm not mad at the upgrades. Although the swords we currently have are (Basic) instead of (Fencing)

[X] Hunting with Magnus von Saponatheim
The young noble has aspirations to join the Pistoliers, and as such is keen to practise his riding and marksmanship alongside you. +5 Ballistic Skill, +5 Ranged (Blackpowder).

[X] Playing Middenball with Father Sigiwalt
The grizzled priest was supposed to be showing you how he ministers to the common folk. You're not quite sure how you ended up in the scrum as a result, but it seems to work. +5 Fellowship, +5 Leadership and Melee (Brawl).

The legbreaker is taking his injury hard, and by sharing a drink with him you might get him to open up instead of spiralling. +5 Toughness, +5 Endurance.

Fencing is interesting because it brings our Fencing up to par with our Brawling and Basic WPs skills.

Which would allow us to basically upgrade Markus' swords with rapiers. Which would be a pretty big upgrade. Here's a comparison.

Markus' swords are Reach: Average and Damage: SB+4.
Rapiers are Reach: Long and Damage: SB+4. But also have the Impale and Fast traits.

At a glance the base difference isn't much. But depending how Maugan uses reach then that increase to "Long" would give any enemy with a shorter weapon than us a -10 to hit. The traits however... Fast weapons ignore initiative order. Effectively allowing you to pick when you hit in combat (first, last, inbetween. Your choice) and any enemy fighting someone with a Fast weapon without having one himself also gets a -10 on all melee tests. If both have fast weapons then initiative order applies.

Weapons with Impale crit on any number that can be divided by 10 (new bit) and every double equal or under the test (normal crit).

So... what does this mean.

Well. By default. Fencing weapons (Foil, Rapier, Smallsword) are the only normal weapons with Fast. So unless we're running into something enhanced by either magic or chaos we don't just get to pick our optimal place in the turn order, but also get a free -10 debuff to all our "normal" enemies.

In terms of reach. Only military flails, cavary weapons, polearms and most twohanders would be able to match or exceed it. All basic and brawling weapons are Average or shorter.

So aside from a +5 to Fencing and +5 to WP it would also be a -10 to enemy melee tests and possibly a -10 on top of that to some enemy hit tests. And more crit potential.

Would need to get our hands on some rapiers though.

Max and Spätin are my favorite companions, so yes, I absolutely want more screen time for the two. Max because I don't want him spiraling into depression, and while I'm not sure if Markus has much advice to offer, just being there for him might help.

Also, Spätin's leaving for the Colleges eventually, so let's spend time with her while we can. Fighting off her jilted suitors isn't the quality bonding time I imagined, but it does sound extremely funny that a bunch of very angry men are willing to duel the Witch Hunter that just killed two daemons in town because of Spätin's shenanigans. The mechanical benefits of getting really good at our main weapon due and upgrading to a Rapier also can't be understated. If I recall Andres' prior reasoning for skill votes, leveling Markus' Weapon Skill brings it past a breakpoint making it automatically have 1 Success Level regardless of rolls, which makes failed rolls much less severe and successes all the better for us.

That sounds pretty insane to me so let's go grab it while we can. We fought lesser daemons today, so I can only imagine our foes are going to get even nastier this time around. Best we get good at stabbing them and taking hits in turn.

Here's my preferred votes. Like the last time I wrote up custom advancement, it's designed to hit break points.
The first option is to get us to Melee (Fencing) 60, which is just the right amount to get us an extra SL (3 extra WS will very rarely help; our opponents would need to have Melee 60-63 exactly).
The second option gets us to Endurance 60 (better resistance against corruption) and will turn Fellowship Fumbles into Fellowship Criticals. We've seen how crucial social interaction is in this adventure, so it's a very good idea to improve our social skills.

You can never, never ever have enough Toughness or Willpower.

Important note
Fast only gives enemies a -10 on melee tests to defend, if they don't also have a Fast weapon
This is still pretty significant, as between Long and Fast , rapiers give enemies -10 melee attacks with shorter weapon and also -10 to enemy melee defense without a Fast trait
But those two bonuses are separate and don't stack together

On that note
[X] Fencing with Spätin
[X] Drinking with Max Ernst

The mechanical bonuses are both nice
But just as important are the social scenes
Spätin represents a major step in Markus's personal goals and journey
Whereas Max is going to be the only person who's presumably sticking around with Markus in the immediate term after dropping Spätin off at Altdorf

It doesn't feel right to close out Bogenhafen without a scene between the two of them

I do hope Spätin will be a recurring character at some point after we drop her off (assuming there will be timeskips/sequels that pick up once she's a journeywoman).

[X] Drinking with Max Ernst

Buddy got dealt a shit hand in our service just as he was, and I quote, "trying to turn his life around". I'm willing to believe that joining a witch hunter was a genuine attempt to turn his skills to something he saw as more noble than his past occupation, and that deserves support.

Gotta love that rapier. Really good weapon.
