The Enemy Within (WHF Witch Hunter Quest)

"It's too bad change is impossible, anyway just kill them all like always, nothing else to be done," says local philosopher, "Unjust persecution will always happen so the correct thing is unjustly persecute them ourselves."
It's either that or dying himself ignobly for not doing his duty, since he chose this profession. If he can't stomach it, he should quit and do something less stressful and morally challenging. Leniency can be stretched only so far before the inevitable crackdown.

Besides, don't forget, that this is a fresh law and it can be easily revoked either next month or after a new Prince takes over Reikland. Such changes happened quite frequently.

I'm turning in for the night, so I'll just ask people to keep it civil and not get my thread locked while I am asleep.

Anyway, Happy New Year one and all, may this one be better than the last.

Quit it with that "Hard Men making Hard Choices" crap. That is clearly what this quest is not pushing or advocating for.
I assume it is, since that's the very essence of being a Witch Hunter.

Of course we can make whatever decisions we wish. After all, we did make some "hard choices" you refer to before.

Of what being a paranoid maniac that will always at the merest suspicion of "heresy"? Markus is not that. We chose options that had him question dogma and showing a willingness to look at his own bias and try to change.
That is absolutely fine, since we have every right to do that.

The one thing we have to remember, is that those choices will have consequences, since the world doesn't have to agree with Markus.

It is of course a pretty legally shady area. But I think it's for the best of our own mental state, if we fully embrace the idea of the possibility of redemption. It is, I feel, very much the more risky action, but it's the kind of story and protagonist I wanna read.

And Sertorius is not wrong that we are making choices that many people will frown upon, choices that can bring us into legal hot water and we are making choices that carry risk that some of these folks will continue to spread Chaos stuff after this.

I also feel that it's absolutely worth the trouble. I would never vote anything else. But we can appreciate the risks we take, for it makes the choice to take the chance on their redemption all the more meaningful.

It's not that they are mutants. It's that they are a part of a cult, and that they just admitted to murder and arson. Also, their judgement and death will mollify an ongoing conflict.
Systemic undermining of cults' motivational systems is noble and all, but it comes at risk I am not willing to accept.

I want a quick, clean dispatching of enemies, so that we can quickly pivot over to the witch. We can always find a chance for mercy some other time, for a more deserving target.

Keep in mind that the Red Crown isn't just tied to mutants, it is also heavily tied to beastmen.
The update didn't mention beastmen.

You will not get clean. Those mutants who were not involved with the murder and arson - which the update said were in the majority - will be forced to fight and all of them will die, if not in the initial battle then executed later. They deserve mercy; we can restrain ourselves to killing only the ones who actually did commit murder and arson to force the innocents into Chaos.

Mallus is a crappy place to live after all.
This resigned acceptance of how things will forever remain terrible and that there should be no attempts at improvement because it's both hard, takes a long time, and won't personally benefit them is how Chaos remains triumphant.

No one who defeated Chaos did it by shrugging their shoulders and giving up because ultimate victory won't occur in their lifetime. In fact, considering there are Templars in the order who would agree, or at least consider, his leniency towards Mutants to be a valid decision thanks to the existence of factions such as the Moderates who are on the ascent politically, the idea that "Markus is unfit to be a Witch Hunter because he doesn't automatically resort to murder for every situation" is ridiculous.

As a reminder, the Witchfinder General promoted Markus because of his tendency to think with more than his rapier and pistol.

And this is Fanasty not 40k where things are not so grimdark that nothing will ever change. That was one of the biggest draws for the setting that it had genuine good guys and that Chaos could be beaten back.

The skinny fellow seems to command the bulk of the mutants, many of whom have moved to gather behind him in a show of solidarity, but this 'Knud' clearly has greater sway among the minority who are armed and trained in violence.
~
"You burned her farm!" the thin man is saying now, gesturing to a young girl huddled behind his legs.
You're not going to get that with untrained civilians and children in play.

To me it seems that Knud and the smaller armed group seem to be the ones who are more hardline Red Crown or are directly enforcers or members of it, and the larger group standing behind are the civie mutants who are angry that the house was burned down.

and you could argue that it is Chaos itself, that that apathy and inclination towards stagnation and giving up, not moving and letting the world rot is a part of Nurgle, that it is exactly what the Grandfather wants.
