The Day Gensokyo Stood Still [Touhou/Undertale]

I'm wondering if Marisa can eventually recover or build sufficient strength/Determination to wrestle control back.

She's Marisa Kirisame.
As things currently stand, no. Chara picked a very good body to inhabit. Every Master Spark thrown is at least partially fueled by Marisa's Love... That's not the same thing as Chara's Love, but the net result of firing the Master Spark is the same. She actually loses that Love, leaving all of her remaining emotions behind. After she fires enough sparks(how many did she fire against Aya?), you get a much more violent and potentially crazy Marisa... things that greatly empower Chara and give him control.

That said, Marisa must have very good control of her emotions to be able to use it that way in the first place. So, is it possible that a series of events could arise that enables that scenario? Yes, I suppose it is possible, but not as things stand right now.

Just to be clear, I am neither confirming, nor denying which outcome will happen.

That's actually open to interpretation because you never really know exactly what's going on in the character's head. More than likely, you are right, but there is that sliver of doubt on that point.

edit... I mean it's not like Chara was just sitting dormant, sipping Martinis waiting for everything to unfold. He undoubtedly had some kind of more direct effect with Frisk... What's unclear, is what effect exactly.
Yet his influence doesn't grow no matter how many Neutral endings you reach. Indeed, it is fully possible to do two Full Pacifist runs in a row as Frisk's ONLY two runs, to get the True Pacifist end.

Chara doesn't start to take over simply from killing lots of monsters, as Frisk can be completely Genocidal up to Mettaton Neo. Taking the path of Genocide requires Frisk to be deliberate and thorough about killing, intentionally seeking out monsters and killing them all until no one is left to kill. There are something like seven different Neutral Endings Frisk can get while racking up a horrible bodycount of innocent lives, and none of those give Chara the power to take over or blackmail Frisk for their soul.

Sparing Mettaton aborts the Genocide run and locks in a Neutral end. However, killing Mettaton also doesn't prevent Frisk from aborting the Genocide Run through a Reset, and while it may be much harder at that point (your Determination at save points has become Red) doing so would set Chara's influence back to the minimum. Frisk can take Sans' judgments to heart and turn back.

So, I very strongly believe that any Frisk who is dominated by Chara is a Frisk who got what was coming to them. Sans warns Frisk that their current path will destroy the world; refusing that warning makes Frisk complicit in Chara's following actions.

That is extremely well thought out.

I think you're missing one critical detail, though. When a reload/reset happens, Chara's influence reverts to what it was before as well... in all cases except one. There is a reason he wants Frisk's soul. It locks him in as in control for good, even beyond reloads/resets. That doesn't mean he didn't have any control before, though. Consider it a cheap trick by Chara to entice Frisk with a chance to make things right. When in reality, even if things go right for Frisk after that point... they don't.

That is my humble opinion. As I said before, I just don't think he's merely sitting there, doing nothing the entire time until after a completed genocide run. Again, what isn't clear is how Chara influences Frisk in the first place. It's very complicated whenever you talk about the mentality of a possessed individual.

edit... Also, Frisk had to be told what his soul even was. Yet, somehow, he demonstrated mastery of using it that way(without being told how) the very first time... If that isn't indicative of a possessive influence, I don't know what is.

The one where Chara has explicitly gained the power to simply take over, destroy the world, and then hold the recreation of the world hostage in return for Frisk's soul. Once Chara HAS control of that soul, Chara can prevent his influence from being reset to minimum. That's the exception that proves the rule, really.

Even after the end of a True Pacifist route, where Chara shouldn't have any strength at all, the Tainted ending reveals that Chara is in control (and has murdered all of the Boss Monsters in the photograph). Chara was probably pretending to be Frisk all through that route in order to get the ending that leads to the destruction of the barrier, allowing Chara free reign to continue manually murdering his way through the human world rather than impersonally erasing it.

I like the way you put that. However, it can still be interpreted either way. We know for a fact that Chara was there from the beginning. Since we don't know what's going on in the character's mind, we can only speculate on what Chara is or isn't doing before complete takeover.

Alright, I know it's been a little bit since the last update. And while I'm not here with an update, I do have a treat for you all. I made a little OST that may or may not be enjoyable. As far as I know, it's the only one of its kind in existence... so if you don't like it, TOO BAD! XD

A Time to Kill
"Hello, Chara."

Marisa quickly spun around to face the new voice.

"Ahh, Sakuya Izayoi. Now I understand." Marisa said, her unease fading as she smiled. "So, you did see me last time. And you can even remember what I did. That makes things very interesting. You moved Meiling to avoid her death, but she's obviously just inside the mansion. Your efforts are completely in vain."

"You are mistaken. I no longer answer to that name." The maid said, expressionlessly. "And you won't take a single step into the mistress's mansion... I promise."

"Oh? And just how do you intend to stop me?"

The maid, still blank faced, raised her arm up, then opened her clenched hand. A beautiful, ornate pocket watch lazily fell downwards, uncoiling its silver chain, despite the fact it couldn't possibly have fit in her hand.

"No you don't!" A massive deluge of high-impact lasers attempted to fence the maid in, but she kicked off the ground and ricocheted off the courtyard wall, moving far faster than she had any right to.

The chain kept unwinding, and Chara prepared himself for the sensation of a sudden death.

And at the moment of maximal extension-

-a feeling of intense solidity passed over the area, outlining a bubble perhaps a few dozen meters across in scintillating white waves.

"This... is a Temporal Lock. No matter what, the next minute is a fixed point in time, which no manipulation can alter."

What!?

*Load Failed*

*Load Failed*
*Load Failed*

Marisa let loose an intense scream of rage. Ripples of raw energy radiated outward from her in all directions. The bubble of energy surrounding the two bowed and contorted, but did not falter.

The maid's barrier crumbled as the powerful wave of energy washed over her. She fell gracelessly to the ground. Stunned, she looked back towards Marisa in disbelief.

"You damned fool! I don't care what measures I have to take anymore. You will die!"

The maid blinked. "I see now... she was right after all." Her face changed to one of stoicism as she stood, withdrawing a concealed set of knives . "No matter. It's time! There is no going back, only forward. Only one of us will leave here alive."

Marisa, her eyes beginning to glow a brilliant crimson, glared at the maid before her. "Just how do you expect to win without your power over time?!"

Marisa quickly launched a large laser towards her opponent. The maid barely managed to spin out of the way of the beam, grazing it as it singed her hair. In response, the maid flung her own set of knives towards Marisa, who, in turn, swung her own knife with deadly force. The maid's knives split in two as if they offered no resistance whatsoever.

Marisa quickly retaliated, circling around her opponent as she unleashed wave after wave of lasers. The maid quickly dodged the first few, but was forced on the defensive as she erected a barrier to attempt to repel the onslaught. The lasers relentlessly battered the barrier, but it did not falter.

Marisa, using the lasers to keep the maid on the defensive, charged in with teeth bared. She leapt towards the maid, knife in hand, as she gave a mighty slash. The maid quickly ducked under the vicious attack as it cleaved her barrier, offering little resistance as it was sheared clean in half. Without missing a beat, the maid pushed off of the ground with her hands as she unleashed a powerful kick into Marisa's stomach as she passed by, forcing her to clench her eyes in pain.

The maid acrobatically sprung off the ground as a knife flew past her. In midair, she spun, elegantly, as she conjured a vast swarm of daggers around her. The daggers circled the maid, spinning in place until they all simultaneously turned towards Marisa, launching towards her with stunning ferocity.

Marisa, her eyes glowing brighter with each moment, launched another series of beams... and drug them across the approaching knives, vaporizing them completely. The maid stared blankly as the beams approached. However, they merely passed straight through her without the slightest evidence of damage.

An illusion?

Instinct took over as Marisa narrowly spun out of the way of a vicious strike from behind. Leaning back, she managed to avoid the follow-up swipe to her face. The third slash to her side, however, connected as the maid's knives drew blood for the first time.

Oooowwww! That... that hurts!

Marisa wasted no time as she leapt away from the furious assault of her attacker, taking to the air. While increasing the distance, she launched waves of glowing hot stars towards the maid. Her opponent quickly took to dodging the assault, dashing left and right to avoid the projectiles, before pulling out a pair of daggers and slashing her way clean through them.

Marisa continued her relentless assault, switching once again to lasers as the distance increased. The maid was once again forced into a defensive position. Alternating between dodging the beams and blocking them with barriers, she could not properly retaliate, but she wasn't taking damage either.

Sensing an opening, Marisa let loose a mighty slash in front of her, staggering the maid as a shockwave impacted with her small frame, bypassing her barrier altogether. The blow left a shallow cut on the maid's body. A bloody smudge appeared upon the edge of Marisa's blade.

Marisa summoned more and more beams towards her target. At the last possible moment, the maid launched herself into the air and encircled herself with a enormous array of silvery daggers.

As they spun in place, the mirrored surfaces of the swarm of daggers deflected many of the approaching beams before launching themselves towards Marisa, dozens of them slicing through the air in the space of seconds.

Marisa quickly shifted into spirit form. As impressive as the maid's stream of daggers was, they had difficulty in tracking the diminutive target. Marisa was just too small and maneuverable to hit. The maid's frustration was apparent on her face, bleeding slightly from the beams she couldn't evade, as she kept adjusting her aim to compensate.

Even when a knife managed to make contact with the dancing soul, the blow was only partially effective and didn't seem to slow her down. Marisa continued bobbing up, down, and around the ludicrous array of knives assaulting her, but the hits were piling up, and she couldn't effectively respond in her current form.

I need to finish this now! Once this "time lock" ends, she will be able to stop time for herself once again. I won't get another chance at this!

Desperately, Marisa shifted back into human form, hurling her knife with tremendous speed. The knife cleaved through one dagger, and another, and another, and another. As the knife neared the maid, a look of apprehension overtook her. She rapidly attempted to dodge the knife as it sheared through her barrier, cleaving it effortlessly as if it weren't even there, but it was too late. She let out a cry of agony as the blade embedded itself into her shoulder.

That's enough! Don't do it!

Marisa's eyes seethed with rage as she stared at the maid before her. She grabbed the Mini Hakkero and pointed it straight towards her target. She didn't utter a single word. She merely willed the device into action. The Mini Hakkero began charging more and more power... more than had ever been used before.

Stop! If ya keep charging the Hakkero like that, it'll explode and kill us all!

"DIE!"

Marisa launched the beam directly at the injured maid. The brilliant light engulfed everything within the area. Marisa's target could only watch as the beam overtook her. A thunderous explosion shook the shimmering sphere that contained the battle, a deafening crack resounding throughout.

A thick smoke covered the mansion's courtyard, the brilliant sphere no longer present. The ornate watch that held it together had vanished along with it. In the midst of a massive crater, only one of the combatants was standing. She turned away from the mansion and willed her broom to her as she took flight towards the forest.

...

...

*Save Complete*

Remilia, noticing the massive cloud of dust outside, approached the balcony. In the distance, she saw Marisa flying away from the mansion. She stopped cold as she peered over the balcony to the courtyard. The devastation was massive, and... she hesitated a moment as the realization of what she was seeing sunk in. There, in the center of the enormous crater, was her maid and trusted friend.

Instantly, Remilia was beside the severely wounded woman as she quickly, yet gently carried her into the mansion. Gently, Remila set her down on a nearby lounge as a few tears fell from the vampire's eyes. The maid's raspy breaths were shallow and weak. She wouldn't last much longer. Remilia didn't need to see her fate to know that.

"I'm... I'm sorry..." The maid said, voice barely above a whisper. "that you had to see this."

Remilia's eyes widened. "Why... why would that... that witch do this?!"

"She is... possessed by something... something that wants to destroy... everything." The maid's voice got weaker with each passing moment.

Remilia strained to hold back her tears. "Everything?"

"Yes... Chara." She gasped. "I tried to stop it. But... I failed. I'd ask you... not to go after it... But... you will anyways." The maid's voiced cracked as a tear slid down her face. "No matter what I say... you will, because... it is fated."

"Is it that dangerous?! Is it so dangerous that you needed to throw your life away for... this?!"

"Yes." The maid wheezed. "It can... go back... to the past. Even after... death. I had... to stop it. Heh, that... would be... handy... right about now."

"Don't talk like that!" Remilia's mouth twitched. "There are no regrets here. Besides, if what you say is true, I should be able to visit you in the Netherworld." Remilia forced a smile. "Death isn't the end. You should know that by now."

"You're right..." The maid's breathing hastened. "There's... no going back... only... forward. I only hope... hope it was... enough..."

Remilia held her friend close as they both closed their eyes. In her arms, the maid's breaths became slower... and slower, until... nothing.

Remilia broke down in tears, mourning the passing of her close friend, oblivious to the sound of the mansion creaking and crumbling around her. The ceilings and walls quickly closed in on each room as the maid's spatial enhancements dissipated. The massive amounts of furniture and decorum took up far too much space in the newly restricted space. In a matter of moments, the entire mansion collapsed as bookcases and furniture forced their way out of the mansion and into the courtyard.

Beneath the rubble, something stirred. With astounding force, Remilia burst forth from her newly formed prison, absolutely furious. The rage in her eyes would terrify any resident of Gensokyo, be it man, youkai, or god. There was only one thing on her mind.

She let out a cry of fury as she took to the sky in pursuit of her friend's murderer. The red mist came forth a moment later. She wanted this... this 'Chara' to know that the Scarlet Devil was coming.

Whew, this chapter was a doozy! I'm glad it's done now so that the story can move on. Again, I apologize for the delays. Hopefully, I'll be able to pick up the pace in the near future.

So, the SDM exploded. Does that mean that this is now officially a Touhou fanfic?

edit... So, what just happened? Determination happened.

Did she somehow managed to break time travel powers of Chara I wonder... She definetly speak like someone who accomplished something.

Do the words... Load Failed mean anything? It means that as of right now, Chara can't go back in time before the lock.

However, someone like Chara is not easy to keep contained. It may or may not be permanent.

I just got the impression that Chara could not use "load" powers as long as Sakuya kept her "lock" active. Didn't think that effect would remain active even after her death.

True Reset maybe?..

As you can see, the 'watch' is part of the lock. It vanishing means that 'something' odd happened there. I'll let you guys ponder the meaning of that.

Maybe... but even that would have to go 'through' the lock. Its power is not absolute, but it's pretty powerful.

Even if Chara successfully goes back, 'something' would undoubtedly happen as the 'lock' won't give up without a fight.

P.S. Time hax can be hard to portray clearly.

Assuming time is a string and the lock stapled it in that place...

Then again, Sans does describe: "Timelines jumping left and right" and "Ending and starting". For all we know, the possibility that Chara just goes to a "very beginning" point before the "story" (branching) in a different timeline, rather than undoing it, would be bypassing the lock instead of trying to deal with it.

I'll concede that with a being like Chara, he may have other tools at his disposal to bypass it. But... would you bet your existence on those tricks working?

It's possible that even if a RESET does so by erasing the current timeline back to the RESET point, that it still would have to deal with the 'lock'. I'll concede that it's probably more likely to work than simply a LOAD, but it's not certain.

However, we know for a fact that other than memories, Chara and Frisk don't generally keep anything from before they went back. That includes EXP and LV. This makes it seem far less likely that he is looping time around to start over. There is only ONE exception to this and that is at the very end of the genocide run.

And all of this debate is pointless if Chara gets powerful enough. If he does, then he can literally just punch right through it. High end Chara's DETERMINATION is obscene like that.

One thing that does make me wonder here is why Sakuya didn't warn Remi first before saving Meiling, or vice versa. Cause some backup from the vampire that took out Chara before could've worked.

Oh and yeah finally signed up for this fanfiction. Looking forward to more fun events with Chara

Fall of the House of Scarlet
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment. Marisa was smiling, gleefully, as she flew over the Misty Lake in admiration of her accomplishment. She reached her hand down towards the cool water's surface, playfully leaving a stream of ripples behind her.

That's one bother to worry about. Although, I'd hoped to get Remilia, too.

You make me sick...

Oh, is that so?

As Marisa neared the far end of the lake, a crashing sound resounded from behind her. She looked behind her to see what had happened...

The mansion! It... it collapsed! Why?!

This can't be good.

Suddenly an eerie cry overtook Gensokyo. Marisa shivered at its ominous implications. That could only be Remilia, crying out for vengeance, out for blood. A moment later, and sure enough, the familiar crimson mist emerged over the mansion's wreckage.

"Oh... Shit."

By the time Marisa finished her words, Remilia was within plain sight, no more than fifty meters away. No longer was she the confident, charismatic devil she was before. She was completely serious... no, it was more than that. She looked absolutely livid, ready to kill at a moment's notice.

In the distance, Marisa stared as Remilia summoned an intensely bright, burning spear above her. As she did, Marisa could see the very landscape tremble before the vampire's awesome power.

It's over. There's no way outta this.

A moment later and Remilia launched the terrifying spear towards Marisa. It flew with such speed and ferocity that Marisa could hardly even see it's approach. Marisa's eyes widened as the spear reached her head...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment. Marisa frowned. She looked completely lost in thought, pondering what to do to overcome this adversary.

(I don't think I'll be able to beat her like this, even with a limitless number of attempts. How can I overcome this obstacle?)

Ugh... at least... at least that one was over with quickly.

Marisa's eyes brightened up as an idea struck her.

It is time we had a little chat.

You have two choices. You can work with me and avoid the pain... or you can die, over and over and over again in such brutally horrifying ways... until the memories of each death weigh you down; burying you, bit by bit; until you are too weak to resist me.

...I know you can hear me.

You're crazy if ya think I'd ever even consider helpin' a freak like you!

Have it your way. But know this... while you have a finite amount of willpower and stamina, mine will NEVER diminish.

As Marisa neared the far end of the lake, a crashing sound resounded from behind her.

Marisa stopped and slowly turned around, waiting for Remilia to show herself. Right on schedule, the vampire arrived. Wasting no time, she summoned her burning spear.

Marisa let a maniacal grin slip as she laughed. "Do you really want to end it so quickly?! I'd have thought you'd want some proper revenge! Or are you too timid to make it really count?"

Remilia was absolutely shocked by Marisa's words. Hesitantly, she lowered her spear and slowly approached Marisa.

Remilia's mouth twisted downwards as she glared at Marisa. "So, you must be Chara. You've somehow managed to take control of Marisa, kill my maid, and now you think you can order me around?! How dare you!"

"If you really think killing me will change anything, you are sorely mistaken." Marisa said before shifting to a smirk. "I'll just be right back here, and you won't be the wiser. I'll keep coming back, again and again, until you fail. What's the harm in giving you the chance to blow off some steam right now?"

Remilia paused, her anger apparent. But she seemed to ponder Chara's words carefully. "I see, so she was right after all. I wonder how she..." Remilia paused, her eyes glazed over for a moment. "Oh... Oh my..."

"Was that a vision? A premonition, perhaps? Wonderful!" Marisa said with a sinister smile. "Now do you realize the futility? Surely you must realize the undeniable truth... that you are going to die and there is nothing that you can do about it."

Remilia backed up a step. "I... I don't understand! How can someone so... so weak... be such a threat?! It doesn't make any sense! It's... not fair! It's not..."

Marisa laughed, hand on her cocked hip. "This is priceless! The great Remilia Scarlet, reduced to a sniveling worm. It makes our encounter all the more worthwhile. Ah... I live for moments like these."

Remilia stepped forward. "Know this, abomination. If I should die today, you will unleash forces upon yourself the likes of which you cannot possibly fathom. No matter where you might try to escape, you will NOT survive. Of this, I am certain!"

"Oooh... spooky. Quit fooling yourself, vampire. I have survived far worse than you can fathom; overcame adversaries far more powerful than you can comprehend; triumphed over death itself. I have completely unmade reality itself. I have little to fear from this world."

"If you won't heed my warning, then there is but one thing left to do."

Without wasting another moment, Remilia swung her spear in a wide arc, cleanly decapitating Marisa.

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

(Well, that didn't go as planned.)

This is... unbearable! Let me go, monster!

There is only one way out of this cycle. Only you can end it.

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

You know she's a killer. She drinks the blood of humans... and you just let it happen. Why do you resist?

Shut up! You don't know her! You don't know the truth!

With your help, we can stop this pointless cycle of death right now. She won't have to feed on another soul ever again.

I... I... I can't!

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

You saw her face. Does that look like the face of someone that cares about you?

Are ya kidding me?! You killed Sakuya! What didja think would happen?!

No, no... WE killed Sakuya.

You're crazy! I never did anything to help you!

Oh, but you did. You allowed me inside, knowing full well that it meant you might lose control.

No... no... you tricked me...

You aren't that naive. It was the lure of power that attracted you more than your good senses could cope with.

...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

Yes, you are responsible for Sakuya's death as much as I am.

No... it... it's not true!

It IS true. You and I are more alike than you might realize. You have a darker side that you've struggled with greatly. For years you've managed to keep it hidden, but you can't hide it from me. It's the side of you that wants to fully become a magician, even if it hurts those closest to you.

No... I wouldn't... I couldn't...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

You constantly search for more power, justifying the means in the name of keeping the peace. That is why I'm here. Surely you've noticed that each victory strengthens us greatly. Together we could even ascend to a higher plane of existence, transcending even the gods of this realm.

You... are a monster.

Monster? With enough power, the word itself is meaningless. We could literally erase the word from existence. We could reshape the world however we desired.

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

She is out to kill you. You already know she won't be merciful. You've already seen it. She even knows that I'm here, but she doesn't care. She wants you dead. How can you possibly ignore that?

You...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

You know that I'm right. She was only being friendly with you because it was convenient. Being on amicable terms, you were more willing to turn a blind eye to the obvious truth. That she was merely using you as she saw fit.

I... I don't believe you!

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

Now that you are more trouble than you're worth, she wants to put you down like some kind of rabbid dog. It's sickening.

No, it can't...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

If she's so good, why doesn't she try to save you from me? Surely, she has the resources to do so, right? No, that would be too much trouble for her.

That's not...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

Face it! She isn't your friend. She's a killer! She's turned on you! The only thing left to do is to fight or die! Kill or be killed!

...

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

Stop... I can't!

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

Please!

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

I can't... I can't take it anymore!

The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.

Alright! Just... just make it stop... please.

I knew I could count on you to make the right choice. So, how do you wish to proceed?

...I'll need... some control of my body back. You're not fast enough.

Of course.

Marisa pulled some fresh ingredients from a concealed pouch. In a flash, she uncorked a vial and ate the contents.

Is that beans... and garlic? I didn't think that had any effect on her.

It doesn't, not enough anyways. But it just might protect me... us... from her hemokinesis. You don't wanna explode again, do ya?

And the rest?

Spell components. We'll need all the magic we can get if we're gonna survive. There's still a couple problems that I haven't figured out yet, like how to dodge her 'Spear of the Gungnir'.

Leave that to me.

Marisa began muttering an incomprehensible incantation. A moment later, her eyes took a faint yellow glow as she completed casting her spell.

What did you just do?

Gained speed.

As Marisa neared the far end of the lake, a crashing sound resounded from behind her. She turned around, a look of resignation on her face. Suddenly an eerie cry overtook Gensokyo. A moment later, and sure enough, the familiar crimson mist emerged over the mansion's wreckage.

"Forgive me."

A moment later and Remilia launched the terrifying spear towards Marisa. Time seemed to somehow slow as the spear approached Marisa's head. As it neared, Marisa, knife in hand, took a mighty slash and cleaved the spear clean in two.

Remilia wasted no time in pressing the attack as she lunged forward. Marisa took to the sky in evasion, to keep her distance, but Remilia was still gaining on her. Marisa grabbed three canisters concealed within her skirt and lobbed them one by one behind her.

Right on cue, each one exploded violently in a cloud of noxious fumes right in front of Remilia. However, she didn't bother to avoid them whatsoever. As Remilia neared the other side of the haze, she stopped mid-flight as she saw that she was face to face with a gigantic beam of light.

Did you get her?

No.

"You murderer!" Remilia cried out... but from where?

The mist!

Marisa darted away from the ominous looking red mist gathering near her just before it began glowing a bright red. Moments later, Remilia rematerialized as her surroundings twisted and distorted in an intense aura of flame. She was giving Marisa the most unsettling look. It was an eerie smile that she had rarely seen, and never by Remilia; a smile that no human dared to see.

"Oh, crap."

Remilia began her pursuit once more while expelling an enormous wave of scorching flames towards Marisa. Marisa, tried to evade the flaming wall, but it was too fast. Overtaking her, the wall of flames engulfed her entirely.

...

The mist!

Marisa darted away from the ominous looking red mist gathering near her just before it began glowing a bright red. Moments later, Remilia rematerialized as her surroundings twisted and distorted in an intense aura of flame.

Remilia began her pursuit once more while expelling an enormous wave of scorching flames towards Marisa. Marisa, quickly muttered another incantation, finishing just before the massive wall of fire reached her. The shock of the impact jolted Marisa, nearly dislodging her from her broom, but the flames seemed to have no effect.

Remilia launched another giant spear towards Marisa while she was off balance. Instinctively, and without even a look, Marisa's eyes quickly glowed red as her body contorted, slicing the spear clean in two with her knife with one deft move.

Remilia stopped in midair. "How in the hell did you even do that?!"

Remilia had begun chasing after Marisa once more, hoping to close the distance and catch up with Marisa. Marisa, her balance regained, lodged the Mini-Hakkero within the bristles of her broom and ignited it, leaving a trail of brilliant light behind her. Marisa's speed increased tremendously as she left the vampire behind.

Remilia dodges the Mini-Hakkero's wake. "Come back here!"

Marisa was just about far enough away to catch her breath when suddenly, she found herself surround by massive chains. The chains quickly grasped the witch and held her firmly in place.

The magical chains pulled tighter and tighter. The pain was unbearable. Marisa screamed in horrible agony as she was ripped apart, piece by piece.

Marisa began slashing at the chains wildly, each swing cleaving cleanly through yet another chain. Marisa furiously swiped at each chain as it drew near, just before it could latch on. Finally free of the chains, she continued her flight into the crimson cloud above her.

Ow, this stuff kinda burns. What's it made of?

Remilia waited patiently for Marisa to come back down. She knew that the witch couldn't stay there indefinitely. Marisa was only human and that toxic mist would eventually kill her if she remained there too long. It was only a matter of time.

Remilia's patience was rewarded when Marisa came blasting towards her with tremendous speed. Marisa's approach was shrouded with a blinding glow of light.

As Marisa neared the vampire, ever more chains appeared. The chains writhed and whipped violently around Remilia. Marisa dodged one... two... three chains, before the fourth struck her midsection, severing her body completely. Marisa's body fell lifelessly towards the ground below.

Remilia began crying as she descended towards Marisa's mangled corpse. "I'm... I'm so sorry, Marisa. I wish there were another way. But... but at least your sacrifice wasn't in vain."

Remilia shrieked in agony as Marisa's knife slashed her side while passing by. The vampire fell to her knees, unable to stand on her own. Blood oozed forth from the wound and drenched her otherwise pristine dress.

"But... you're dead! You're... right here!" Remilia blinked at the corpse as it faded from sight. "A clone?"

Marisa landed before the vampire, knife in hand. She had incapacitated Remilia and was content to leave. However, Marisa hesitated.

Kill her.

Why? She's not a threat any more.

Do it.

Marisa threw the knife deep into the ground. "No! I won't do it!"

Remilia's eyes glazed over once more. "It... It's alright. You have to do it. It is fate. The demon within you... will not allow any other outcome. If you resist now, he will just... make it more difficult... for both of us. It is time... to face your fate. I... forgive you, Marisa."

"Remilia!" Marisa broke down in tears. "Why?! Why must I be forced to kill like this?! This isn't what I wanted!!"

"I know." Remilia bowed her head with a faint smile. "Take it from someone else that was forced to kill against their will; it's much easier if you finish it quickly. Allowing it to linger on will drive you mad."

"Huh?! I don't understand? You're the daughter of Vlad Tepes aren't ya?"

"Promise me that you won't tell a soul about this."

Marisa nodded.

"Flan and I weren't born as vampires, we were made vampires against our will. In the dead of night, my creator sought to make a meal of me. He meant to leave me for dead... but I survived, forever changed. When I awoke, I knew that I was different. I quickly went to Flan and found that she too was changed. We were cursed with this form, forced to feed on the blood of humans just to survive. Flan almost died of hunger because she refused to feed. I had to take it upon myself to learn how to hunt to save us both. It was... horrifying, to say the least."

Marisa weeped. "I... I never knew."

"Can we hurry this up?" Marisa said, annoyed, as her eyes flashed red.

"Ah.... I see that my time is up... but yours is not." Remilia said, still smiling. "Before I go, I have some final words for our mutual enemy. Chara! You may have won this battle, but I foresee another lurking in the darkness... far surpassing even you on the horizon. You will be meeting... soon enough."

"What? Explain yourself!"

"Ah, but I've said all that I will. And now, my time is up. Do it, Marisa!" Remilia closed her eyes and braced herself for her own end.

Reluctantly, Marisa picked up the bloody knife. She stared at Remilia, who had presented herself willingly, and prepared to strike.

"I'm... I'm still sorry." Marisa said.

"I know." Remilia calmly replied.

The knife plunged into Remilia's heart, Marisa's hands and body trembling. Remilia offered no resistance and merely fell over peacefully. There were no further words. Everything that needed to be said was already said. One moment Remilia was alive, and the next, she was not. The simplicity... it was overwhelming. Remilia peacefully faded from existence, dissolving into pure light.

Marisa was filled with a new sensation. It wasn't sadness, or anger... but something unexpected. Something alien. She felt, a sense of detachment combined with a hint of glee filling her. She had felt this before with Sakuya and Meiling, but then it felt more like a faint echo. This was far more direct and personal.

What... what is this feeling?

That is the feeling of power. Get used to it, because we're not done having fun just yet.

Marisa heard a rustling sound coming from behind one of the nearby trees. She quickly turned to face the sound and saw a few locks of green hair quickly receding into the forest. Marisa's eyes glowed red as she quickly chased after the mysterious person. Through the forest she went, but Marisa quickly lost sight of her target.

"I don't have time for this!" Marisa grumbled as she gave up pursuit of the mysterious witness.

Marisa took to the skies once more, headed in the direction of the human village. "There's one more... problem... I need to take care of first. And then it's time to play!"

Whew! This chapter was... something else. Ok, so... Marisa and Chara are actually, somehow, working together! That's a huge game changer... I call soul hax!

Author's Note: This chapter marks the end of the SDM arc. Up next is an interlude.

"How in the hell did you even do that?!" Remilia shouted in frustration.

Insanely powerfull Vampire who can summon chains out of nowhere fighting person who can destroy energy attacks with just the swipe of the knife? Now, why does this sound familiar?..
