The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment. Marisa was smiling, gleefully, as she flew over the Misty Lake in admiration of her accomplishment. She reached her hand down towards the cool water's surface, playfully leaving a stream of ripples behind her.
That's one bother to worry about. Although, I'd hoped to get Remilia, too.
You make me sick...
Oh, is that so?
As Marisa neared the far end of the lake, a crashing sound resounded from behind her. She looked behind her to see what had happened...
The mansion! It... it collapsed! Why?!
This can't be good.
Suddenly an eerie cry overtook Gensokyo. Marisa shivered at its ominous implications. That could only be Remilia, crying out for vengeance, out for blood. A moment later, and sure enough, the familiar crimson mist emerged over the mansion's wreckage.
"
Oh... Shit."
By the time Marisa finished her words, Remilia was within plain sight, no more than fifty meters away. No longer was she the confident, charismatic devil she was before. She was completely serious... no, it was more than that. She looked absolutely livid, ready to kill at a moment's notice.
In the distance, Marisa stared as Remilia summoned an intensely bright, burning spear above her. As she did, Marisa could see the very landscape tremble before the vampire's awesome power.
It's over. There's no way outta this.
A moment later and Remilia launched the terrifying spear towards Marisa. It flew with such speed and ferocity that Marisa could hardly even see it's approach. Marisa's eyes widened as the spear reached her head...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment. Marisa frowned. She looked completely lost in thought, pondering what to do to overcome this adversary.
(I don't think I'll be able to beat her like this, even with a limitless number of attempts. How can I overcome this obstacle?)
Ugh... at least... at least that one was over with quickly.
Marisa's eyes brightened up as an idea struck her.
It is time we had a little chat.
You have two choices. You can work with me and avoid the pain... or you can die, over and over and over again in such brutally horrifying ways... until the memories of each death weigh you down; burying you, bit by bit; until you are too weak to resist me.
...I know you can hear me.
You're crazy if ya think I'd ever even consider helpin' a freak like you!
Have it your way. But know this... while you have a finite amount of willpower and stamina, mine will NEVER diminish.
As Marisa neared the far end of the lake, a crashing sound resounded from behind her.
Marisa stopped and slowly turned around, waiting for Remilia to show herself. Right on schedule, the vampire arrived. Wasting no time, she summoned her burning spear.
Marisa let a maniacal grin slip as she laughed. "
Do you really want to end it so quickly?! I'd have thought you'd want some proper revenge! Or are you too timid to make it really count?"
Remilia was absolutely shocked by Marisa's words. Hesitantly, she lowered her spear and slowly approached Marisa.
Remilia's mouth twisted downwards as she glared at Marisa. "So, you must be Chara. You've somehow managed to take control of Marisa, kill my maid, and now you think you can order me around?!
How dare you!"
"
If you really think killing me will change anything, you are sorely mistaken." Marisa said before shifting to a smirk. "
I'll just be right back here, and you won't be the wiser. I'll keep coming back, again and again, until you fail. What's the harm in giving you the chance to blow off some steam right now?"
Remilia paused, her anger apparent. But she seemed to ponder Chara's words carefully. "I see, so she was right after all. I wonder how she..." Remilia paused, her eyes glazed over for a moment. "Oh... Oh my..."
"
Was that a vision? A premonition, perhaps? Wonderful!" Marisa said with a sinister smile. "
Now do you realize the futility? Surely you must realize the undeniable truth... that you are going to die and there is nothing that you can do about it."
Remilia backed up a step. "I... I don't understand! How can someone so... so weak... be such a threat?! It doesn't make any sense! It's... not fair! It's not..."
Marisa laughed, hand on her cocked hip. "
This is priceless! The great Remilia Scarlet, reduced to a sniveling worm. It makes our encounter all the more worthwhile. Ah... I live for moments like these."
Remilia stepped forward. "Know this, abomination. If I should die today, you will unleash forces upon yourself the likes of which you cannot possibly fathom. No matter where you might try to escape, you will NOT survive. Of this, I am certain!"
"
Oooh... spooky. Quit fooling yourself, vampire. I have survived far worse than you can fathom; overcame adversaries far more powerful than you can comprehend; triumphed over death itself. I have completely unmade reality itself. I have little to fear from this world."
"If you won't heed my warning, then there is but one thing left to do."
Without wasting another moment, Remilia swung her spear in a wide arc, cleanly decapitating Marisa.
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
(Well, that didn't go as planned.)
This is... unbearable! Let me go, monster!
There is only one way out of this cycle. Only you can end it.
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
You know she's a killer. She drinks the blood of humans... and you just let it happen. Why do you resist?
Shut up! You don't know her! You don't know the truth!
With your help, we can stop this pointless cycle of death right now. She won't have to feed on another soul ever again.
I... I... I can't!
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
You saw her face. Does that look like the face of someone that cares about you?
Are ya kidding me?! You killed Sakuya! What didja think would happen?!
No, no... WE killed Sakuya.
You're crazy! I never did anything to help you!
Oh, but you did. You allowed me inside, knowing full well that it meant you might lose control.
No... no... you tricked me...
You aren't that naive. It was the lure of power that attracted you more than your good senses could cope with.
...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
Yes, you are responsible for Sakuya's death as much as I am.
No... it... it's not true!
It IS true. You and I are more alike than you might realize. You have a darker side that you've struggled with greatly. For years you've managed to keep it hidden, but you can't hide it from me. It's the side of you that wants to fully become a magician, even if it hurts those closest to you.
No... I wouldn't... I couldn't...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
You constantly search for more power, justifying the means in the name of keeping the peace. That is why I'm here. Surely you've noticed that each victory strengthens us greatly. Together we could even ascend to a higher plane of existence, transcending even the gods of this realm.
You... are a monster.
Monster? With enough power, the word itself is meaningless. We could literally erase the word from existence. We could reshape the world however we desired.
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
She is out to kill you. You already know she won't be merciful. You've already seen it. She even knows that I'm here, but she doesn't care. She wants you dead. How can you possibly ignore that?
You...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
You know that I'm right. She was only being friendly with you because it was convenient. Being on amicable terms, you were more willing to turn a blind eye to the obvious truth. That she was merely using you as she saw fit.
I... I don't believe you!
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
Now that you are more trouble than you're worth, she wants to put you down like some kind of rabbid dog. It's sickening.
No, it can't...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
If she's so good, why doesn't she try to save you from me? Surely, she has the resources to do so, right? No, that would be too much trouble for her.
That's not...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
Face it! She isn't your friend. She's a killer! She's turned on you! The only thing left to do is to fight or die! Kill or be killed!
...
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
Stop... I can't!
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
Please!
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
I can't... I can't take it anymore!
The sun was getting lower in the sky with each passing moment.
Alright! Just... just make it stop... please.
I knew I could count on you to make the right choice. So, how do you wish to proceed?
...I'll need... some control of my body back. You're not fast enough.
Of course.
Marisa pulled some fresh ingredients from a concealed pouch. In a flash, she uncorked a vial and ate the contents.
Is that beans... and garlic? I didn't think that had any effect on her.
It doesn't, not enough anyways. But it just might protect me... us... from her hemokinesis. You don't wanna explode again, do ya?
And the rest?
Spell components. We'll need all the magic we can get if we're gonna survive. There's still a couple problems that I haven't figured out yet, like how to dodge her 'Spear of the Gungnir'.
Leave that to me.
Marisa began muttering an incomprehensible incantation. A moment later, her eyes took a faint yellow glow as she completed casting her spell.
What did you just do?
Gained speed.
As Marisa neared the far end of the lake, a crashing sound resounded from behind her. She turned around, a look of resignation on her face. Suddenly an eerie cry overtook Gensokyo. A moment later, and sure enough, the familiar crimson mist emerged over the mansion's wreckage.
"Forgive me."
A moment later and Remilia launched the terrifying spear towards Marisa. Time seemed to somehow slow as the spear approached Marisa's head. As it neared, Marisa, knife in hand, took a mighty slash and cleaved the spear clean in two.
Remilia wasted no time in pressing the attack as she lunged forward. Marisa took to the sky in evasion, to keep her distance, but Remilia was still gaining on her. Marisa grabbed three canisters concealed within her skirt and lobbed them one by one behind her.
Right on cue, each one exploded violently in a cloud of noxious fumes right in front of Remilia. However, she didn't bother to avoid them whatsoever. As Remilia neared the other side of the haze, she stopped mid-flight as she saw that she was face to face with a gigantic beam of light.
Did you get her?
No.
"You murderer!" Remilia cried out... but from where?
The mist!
Marisa darted away from the ominous looking red mist gathering near her just before it began glowing a bright red. Moments later, Remilia rematerialized as her surroundings twisted and distorted in an intense aura of flame. She was giving Marisa the most unsettling look. It was an eerie smile that she had rarely seen, and never by Remilia; a smile that no human dared to see.
"Oh, crap."
Remilia began her pursuit once more while expelling an enormous wave of scorching flames towards Marisa. Marisa, tried to evade the flaming wall, but it was too fast. Overtaking her, the wall of flames engulfed her entirely.
...
The mist!
Marisa darted away from the ominous looking red mist gathering near her just before it began glowing a bright red. Moments later, Remilia rematerialized as her surroundings twisted and distorted in an intense aura of flame.
Remilia began her pursuit once more while expelling an enormous wave of scorching flames towards Marisa. Marisa, quickly muttered another incantation, finishing just before the massive wall of fire reached her. The shock of the impact jolted Marisa, nearly dislodging her from her broom, but the flames seemed to have no effect.
Remilia launched another giant spear towards Marisa while she was off balance. Instinctively, and without even a look, Marisa's eyes quickly glowed red as her body contorted, slicing the spear clean in two with her knife with one deft move.
Remilia stopped in midair. "How in the hell did you even do that?!"
Remilia had begun chasing after Marisa once more, hoping to close the distance and catch up with Marisa. Marisa, her balance regained, lodged the Mini-Hakkero within the bristles of her broom and ignited it, leaving a trail of brilliant light behind her. Marisa's speed increased tremendously as she left the vampire behind.
Remilia dodges the Mini-Hakkero's wake. "Come back here!"
Marisa was just about far enough away to catch her breath when suddenly, she found herself surround by massive chains. The chains quickly grasped the witch and held her firmly in place.
The magical chains pulled tighter and tighter. The pain was unbearable. Marisa screamed in horrible agony as she was ripped apart, piece by piece.
...

Marisa was just about far enough away to catch her breath when suddenly, she found herself surround by massive chains. Marisa began slashing at the chains wildly, each swing cleaving cleanly through yet another chain. Marisa furiously swiped at each chain as it drew near, just before it could latch on. Finally free of the chains, she continued her flight into the crimson cloud above her.
Ow, this stuff kinda burns. What's it made of?
Remilia waited patiently for Marisa to come back down. She knew that the witch couldn't stay there indefinitely. Marisa was only human and that toxic mist would eventually kill her if she remained there too long. It was only a matter of time.
Remilia's patience was rewarded when Marisa came blasting towards her with tremendous speed. Marisa's approach was shrouded with a blinding glow of light.
As Marisa neared the vampire, ever more chains appeared. The chains writhed and whipped violently around Remilia. Marisa dodged one... two... three chains, before the fourth struck her midsection, severing her body completely. Marisa's body fell lifelessly towards the ground below.
Remilia began crying as she descended towards Marisa's mangled corpse. "I'm... I'm so sorry, Marisa. I wish there were another way. But... but at least your sacrifice wasn't in vain."
Remilia shrieked in agony as Marisa's knife slashed her side while passing by. The vampire fell to her knees, unable to stand on her own. Blood oozed forth from the wound and drenched her otherwise pristine dress.
"But... you're dead! You're... right here!" Remilia blinked at the corpse as it faded from sight. "A clone?"
Marisa landed before the vampire, knife in hand. She had incapacitated Remilia and was content to leave. However, Marisa hesitated.
Kill her.
Why? She's not a threat any more.
Do it.
Marisa threw the knife deep into the ground. "No! I won't do it!"
Remilia's eyes glazed over once more. "It... It's alright. You have to do it. It is fate. The demon within you... will not allow any other outcome. If you resist now, he will just... make it more difficult... for both of us. It is time... to face your fate. I... forgive you, Marisa."
"Remilia!" Marisa broke down in tears. "Why?! Why must I be forced to kill like this?! This isn't what I wanted!!"
"I know." Remilia bowed her head with a faint smile. "Take it from someone else that was forced to kill against their will; it's much easier if you finish it quickly. Allowing it to linger on will drive you mad."
"Huh?! I don't understand? You're the daughter of Vlad Tepes aren't ya?"
"Promise me that you won't tell a soul about this."
Marisa nodded.
"Flan and I weren't born as vampires, we were made vampires against our will. In the dead of night, my creator sought to make a meal of me. He meant to leave me for dead... but I survived, forever changed. When I awoke, I knew that I was different. I quickly went to Flan and found that she too was changed. We were cursed with this form, forced to feed on the blood of humans just to survive. Flan almost died of hunger because she refused to feed. I had to take it upon myself to learn how to hunt to save us both. It was... horrifying, to say the least."
Marisa weeped. "I... I never knew."
"
Can we hurry this up?" Marisa said, annoyed, as her eyes flashed red.
"Ah.... I see that my time is up... but yours is not." Remilia said, still smiling. "Before I go, I have some final words for our mutual enemy. Chara! You may have won this battle, but I foresee another lurking in the darkness... far surpassing even you on the horizon. You will be meeting... soon enough."
"
What? Explain yourself!"
"Ah, but I've said all that I will. And now, my time is up. Do it, Marisa!" Remilia closed her eyes and braced herself for her own end.
Reluctantly, Marisa picked up the bloody knife. She stared at Remilia, who had presented herself willingly, and prepared to strike.
"I'm... I'm still sorry." Marisa said.
"I know." Remilia calmly replied.
The knife plunged into Remilia's heart, Marisa's hands and body trembling. Remilia offered no resistance and merely fell over peacefully. There were no further words. Everything that needed to be said was already said. One moment Remilia was alive, and the next, she was not. The simplicity... it was overwhelming. Remilia peacefully faded from existence, dissolving into pure light.

Marisa was filled with a new sensation. It wasn't sadness, or anger... but something unexpected. Something alien. She felt, a sense of detachment combined with a hint of glee filling her. She had felt this before with Sakuya and Meiling, but then it felt more like a faint echo. This was far more direct and personal.
What... what is this feeling?
That is the feeling of power. Get used to it, because we're not done having fun just yet.
Marisa heard a rustling sound coming from behind one of the nearby trees. She quickly turned to face the sound and saw a few locks of green hair quickly receding into the forest. Marisa's eyes glowed red as she quickly chased after the mysterious person. Through the forest she went, but Marisa quickly lost sight of her target.
"
I don't have time for this!" Marisa grumbled as she gave up pursuit of the mysterious witness.
Marisa took to the skies once more, headed in the direction of the human village. "
There's one more... problem... I need to take care of first. And then it's time to play!"
