The Day Gensokyo Stood Still [Touhou/Undertale]

It's generally agreed that Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the sixth game in the series and the first one on Windows, is the "start" of modern Touhou - the previous five games are questionably canonical in terms of story, contain a large amount of early installment weirdness, and barring a few shoutouts, the events within them have never been refered to again.

Well, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil features an upcoming plot element.

It's generally agreed that Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the sixth game in the series and the first one on Windows, is the "start" of modern Touhou...

Played it...

I don't know what the hell happened, but I think I just got dunked on... Hard... By female DIO in the maid dress no less...

And here I was, thinking that I am decent in the bullethell... Guess I would need a lot of practice to finish this game...

Ahh, Sakuya. She tends to have that effect.

Don't feel bad. These games are known for being very difficult. It takes practice to master them.

If all you want is a crash course in the story at the moment... you can read the relevant dialogue on the touhou wiki without spoiling the bullet hell insanity.

Crimson Guardian
Marisa glided low over the treetops near the foot of the mountain as she approached the mansion before her. The sun was beginning to sink lower in the sky.

Maybe a couple more hours before sunset. There's still time.

You're insane if ya think you can just steal my body and take on the Scarlet Devil Mansion head on. Ya probably can't even get in the gate properly.

Quiet! You might think that I have no idea what I'm up against, but YOU have no idea what I'm capable of!

Marisa landed a bit rougher than usual, but took it in stride. She landed a fair distance away from the mansion, concealed by the foliage.

Ow. Ya might wanna work on those landings a bit. And, ya know, try not to get me killed in the process.

Shut up!

Marisa cautiously peered around the outer wall towards the gate. There she saw that the gate guard was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, a bored look overtaking her features.

Marisa straightened up and walked around the corner. She walked purposefully towards the front gate, a calm smile upon her face. The guard, Meiling, stood up as she caught sight of Marisa.

"What brings you-" Meiling began to speak before trailing off as her eyes narrowed at Marisa's.

"You... you're not... you! You've come with the darkest intent that I've ever seen! I can see it as plain as the hat on your head. What happened to you?!"

Marisa stopped, dumbfounded. "What are you talking about?"

Meiling entered a guarded stance. "That confirms it. You don't even speak the same way. Leave! NOW!!"

"Damn. And I was hoping to enter quietly."

Told ya.

Shut up!

Marisa reached behind her back and pulled out a crude looking knife. One that looked like it belonged in a kitchen at the village.

Did you just...

Meiling wasted no time in deciding to attack. With lightning speed, she closed the short distance between the two and disarmed the knife in one deft maneuver, breaking Marisa's wrist in the process.

Gah! That hurts like hell!

With one further deft manuever, Meiling grasped Marisa's remaining wrist, spinning her body around and trapping her arm behind her. Meiling's other arm took hold of Marisa's head. Marisa was clearly trapped. One quick maneuver and Meiling could end it right there.

"Saku..."

Nope!

Marisa glided low over the treetops near the foot of the mountain as she approached the mansion before her. The sun was beginning to get lower in the sky.

What the hell was that?!

Didn't I tell you already?

Marisa landed smoothly a fair distance away from the mansion, concealed by the foliage. She creaked her wrist slightly, shaking off the memory of the pain.

And what was that about the landing? No snide comments this time?

Oh... Shit.

Marisa attempted to find a window that she could sneak in. Avoiding the front of the mansion, and its gatekeeper, she could see that most were completely sealed. Enough that they couldn't be quietly accessed without rousing unwanted attention. Finally, spotting a vulnerable window, she made her stealthy approach.

As Marisa reached the window, she began to pry it open carefully. Before she even knew what hit her, she was completely bound in a full nelson. Marisa had no recourse to the maneuver as one deft move could snap her neck with a moments notice.

"I don't know what you're up to," Meiling said. "but it can't be good. I can sense the darkness within you as plain as the hat on your head. What happened to you?!"

Alright, plan B.

Marisa's body almost instantly dematerialized into a small red wisp of energy. Meiling was completely caught off guard by the display. In her new form, Marisa easily shook off Meiling's grasp and readied a counter-attack. Marisa quickly danced around Meiling's body, small cuts appearing during each pass.

Meiling, regaining her composure, grabbed the red ball of energy, her palm glowing, while readying her other hand for the finishing blow.

Impossible! This form is completely incorporeal!

A moment later, and the blow connected, completely dissipating the glowing ball of energy that was Marisa.

Marisa glided low over the treetops near the foot of the mountain as she approached the mansion before her. The sun was beginning to get lower in the sky.

Ugh... Did... did I just die?

That damn gatekeeper!

Am I alive?

Marisa landed smoothly. She landed a fair distance away from the mansion, concealed by the foliage.

Alright, if that's the way it's going to be, I'll just dispose of her first.

Marisa reached behind her back and pulled out a crude looking knife. One that looked like it belonged in a kitchen at the village.

Marisa cautiously peered around the outer wall towards the gate. There she saw that the gate guard was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, a bored look overtaking her features.

Marisa took the knife and carefully aimed it directly for Meiling. With one mighty throw, she hurled it at blinding speed.

Meiling sensed the projectile's approach and with one deft move, caught it with two fingers before it could find purchase. Firmly, she tossed the knife to the ground at her feet. It embedded itself far too deep to be seen. Meiling took a moment to notice the knife's effect.

"That's no ordinary knife." Meiling said, sternly. "That could have killed me. I have no tolerance for would-be assassins."

Come on! What's it going to take to get in without raising a ruckus?

Marisa almost didn't notice Meiling's approach. Just before impact, Marisa barely spun sideways out of the way of a punch aimed at her head, before reeling in agony at the side kick to the stomach that sent her flying twenty meters, colliding with a tree.

Marisa saw the finishing blow headed straight for her head.

Marisa glided low over the treetops near the foot of the mountain as she approached the mansion before her. The sun was beginning to get lower in the sky.

Face it. You're out of yer league and have no idea what yer up against. If you're having trouble against the gatekeeper, ya stand no chance at all against the ones inside.

If that's the way it's going to be, I'll just have to actually fight her.

Then what the hell were ya just doing then?

Shut UP!

Marisa let a smile slip as she quickly pulled out the knife with her right hand. She quickly flipped it around in a defensive grip.

Alright. Lets have some fun!

Marisa walked purposefully towards the front gate, her smile beginning to widen. The guard, Meiling, caught sight of Marisa. Marisa raised her left hand as it filled with energy.

Meiling's eyes widened as Marisa unleashed a single laser towards her. She barely managed to leap out of the way before it could hit.

Meiling quickly surveyed the damage Marisa's attack had left. A mid-sized hole had been punched right through the outer courtyard wall near the gate and again through the opposite wall. Smoking embers lined the damaged areas. Meiling could only stare at Marisa before adopting a fighting stance.

Where'd you get that spell? It might look like it, but that's not one of mine.

"That was a dishonorable move. I have no tolerance for would-be assassins..." Meiling furrowed her brow. "Something feels off. It feels like I've said this before."

Marisa defiantly maintained her smile.

Meiling charged towards Marisa, her hands manifesting a faint glow. Marisa let loose another laser aimed towards Meiling's heart. Meiling, anticipating the attack, leapt sideways before thrusting her hands forward as she let a shimmering qi blast of her own erupt forth.

Marisa, rather than dodge Meiling's attack, raised her right arm, placing the knife's razor sharp edge between herself and the attack. As the attack hit the knife... it split the energy harmlessly to either side of her. Already having her next attack primed, Marisa fired her next laser.

Meiling, her sight of Marisa obscured from her own attack, didn't see the laser coming until it was too late to dodge. Instinctively, she put her hands forth in an attempt to shield herself from the blast.

The attack resounded with a small explosion. Meiling flew backwards a good 5 meters before landing down on one knee. The blast left her visibly battered, yet she instantly rebounded. She sprung forth with exceptional speed in a counter attack.

Marisa wasn't expecting such a speedy recovery and only barely managed to erect a crude barrier before Meiling's powerful punch connected, completely obliterating the pitiful shield. The blow sent Marisa flying high up into the air, backflipping wildly.

After a few moments, Marisa caught herself in mid-air. She was mildly dazed and more than a bit disoriented. Where'd she go?! Marisa quickly scanned the area around her. She briefly noticed a figure observing them from the mansion's balcony wearing a pink dress and cap. She had magnificent bat-like wings. Remilia. So she's watching the show. Marisa's attention quickly snapped back to the battle as she heard Meiling's sounds of strained exertion right behind her.

Marisa quickly transformed into a ball of red energy to dodge the powerful kick headed towards her back. As Meiling flew beside her, Marisa reverted back to human form. Knife in hand, Marisa managed a slash on Meiling's right arm as she passed by. Meiling shrieked in terrible pain as her arm went limp, no longer usable.

Both combatants landed.

"It's a shame that it had to come to this. I always liked you, Marisa."

Marisa merely smiled in response.

Meiling quickly channeled her energy until her body was shimmering in radiant light. Marisa raised her left hand, charging another attack, only to be interrupted when Meiling stomped the ground with such force that it left a small crater in the ground beneath her. The shock wave knocked Marisa off the ground, while the outer courtyard walls cracked and crumbled, massive cracks appearing, leaving much to the imagination as to how they were even still standing.

Without hesitation, Meiling used the force of the stomp to launch towards Marisa with incredible speed in a single powerful kick. As she approached Marisa, her appearance was overshadowed by a spectral outline of a dragon. Marisa, eyes wide, shifted into the ball of energy once more to regain balance and fly above Meiling's attack. As Meiling passed by, Marisa resumed human form once more as she begun charging yet another laser.

Meling's kick continued right through a tree and into the next one, which she used as a springboard to launch herself back towards Marisa. Meiling, sensing Marisa's attack, punched the air in front of her with incredible force. Marisa's hastily erected barrier only partially absorbed the shockwave, she was still left off balance, unable to complete her own attack.

Meiling continued her charge, letting loose blast after blast while she closed the distance. Marisa had no choice but to maintain the barrier as Meiling got closer and closer. The distance almost closed, Meiling launched an elbow strike towards Marisa's head.

Marisa shifted into the red ball of energy once more, this time racing behind Meiling. As Marisa reappeared, she quickly slammed the knife into the center of Meiling's back.

"Gah!" Meiling shrieked as blood dripped from her mouth. Her glow instantly faded as she dropped to her knees, no longer able to fight back.

Meiling's breathing was laboured, her clothes soaked in her own blood. "You... you've become... something else. Something darker than I could ever imagine. But... you won't... you won't last."

Marisa cocked her head sideways and smiled, gleefully.

Meiling collapsed face forward as the life within her faded. A shimmering light overtook her body as it slowly disintegrated into nothingness. When it was all over, all that remained of her was the bloody knife that took her life.

Meiling! No... no, it can't be! YOU MONSTER!

"Ahhh. That was so much more satisfying than those puny villagers and weaklings. This is going to be much more fun than I thought!"

You... you won't get away with this.

Who's going to stop me? You? Don't make me laugh.

Marisa observed the mansion intently. It remained silent. Remilia was no longer at the balcony, observing her. Well. This changes things. The element of surprise was long gone. A new plan was needed...

She looked up at the sky, the sun shining brightly, and grinned a feral grin. Perhaps a new skylight might make things more fun! The Mini Hakkero snapped up with polished fluidity, but the actual invocation was slower... sloppier; and yet, far more dangerous - no limiters, no restraint, just the rush of intoxicating power. I was wondering if someone would notice that... no, there was no save. This is one event transitioning directly to another.

edit... for reference, I will always indicate a save when it happens.

For an example of a PC98 game that is referenced later on, Mystic Square(Touhou 5) has a lot of plot elements that come back in future games. I wouldn't go so far as to say that every single detail is considered canon, but it's got a lot going for it for reference material.

-until suddenly, Remilia Scarlet instantly appeared before her, grinning, as she casually snapped Marisa's wrist and redirected the immense blast high into the sky.

In broad daylight!?
In broad daylight!?

The vampire's eyes glinted red as she sprung backwards, the slightest sizzling sound the only indicator anything was happening at all. "Hmm... tricky, tricky. That's not an elegant way to request an audience."

Marisa ignored the pain entirely as she raised her unbroken arm, sending eight powerful lasers directly at Remilia. Surely even vampiric speed would falter compared to the speed of light? Yet, as they neared her, the beam's paths warped, radically, avoiding her entirely.

Remilia kept smirking, having not even attempted to dodge. Her eyes shone brighter yet, clearly visible even during daylight. "Bad luck, I'm afraid; it's a Sunday. But... Hah. I see you, Chara Dreemurr. 'The Joy of the Dream', yet the one who brings an end to fantasy. But enough of this."

In an instant, the sun was dimmed to nothing, as a dark and bloody mist erupted over the mansion - no doubt visible from across Gensokyo. Marisa stared blankly at the vampire.

"So, you've figured it out, vampire. I must admit, you've surpassed my wildest expectations. And yet, it makes no difference in the slightest. You... can't... win."

Remilia frowned at Marisa's ominous proclamation. "My, you can be quite loquacious when you feel like it."

Marisa beamed. "Ahh! So you have seen it! How wonderful! Tell me, Remelia, how does it feel knowing that everyone and everything you hold dear will be gone before the night is over?"

"Fate is fickle by nature. No matter how certain the future may seem, it can never be fixed in place. Such is the power of the many, many souls that forge it."

"It's quite amusing to hear that coming from you of all people." Marisa chuckled as she widened her grin. "I believe that you are merely obscuring the truth... that you have no true power over fate... and especially over mine. I believe you to be a complete and utter fraud!"

Remilia smirked. "Believe what you will."

Marisa, remaining motionless, willed her broom to come to her as she prepared to engage Remilia. Remilia slowly hovered higher and higher into the mist as Marisa, mounting her broom, followed suit. The tension in the air was thick. The two were silently staring each other down... ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.

It was Marisa that broke the silence as she raised her hand once more and launched another group of lasers towards Remilia. Remilia was seemingly already out of the way of the beams before they had even left Marisa. Marisa fired again... and again... and again. Each time Remilia was one step ahead of her.

She's so fast! How am I supposed to hit her?!

Marisa changed tactics and launched a new set of beams to either side of Remilia, attempting to cut off her escape routes. Each time, the beams took up more and more of her mobility, until there was little room for the vampire to maneuver. Marisa launched one final wave of beams at Remilia.

Without waiting to see the result of her previous attack, she reached for the Mini Hakkero. Quickly invoking the magic, she followed her previous attack with a devastating beam of blinding light. Marisa saw her previous beams' trajectory alter wildly just before...

"You're much slower than Marisa, you know."

Behind her! Damn! How did she do that?! Marisa quickly flew away from the vampire at top speed before launching a new wave of attacks. This time, the lasers fired like a machine gun, littering the sky with brilliant light, yet each one missed its mark. Remilia was always just one step ahead of her.

Marisa grinned maniacally as a new idea came to her. "If you're just going to keep dodging, Remilia, then what happens if I do this?!" Her unbroken arm pointed the Hakkero straight down, and a massive deluge of power that could crack mountains overwhelmed the mansion, the reverberating thud resonating throughout the land. Yet Remilia looked unperturbed.

"Fire Metal Sun - Archimedes' Reflector."

A spectacular barrier appeared directly over the mansion, holding vigilantly before the enormous beam. As it collided with the shimmering barrier, the beam rebounded without disturbing the barrier in the slightest, launching the beam high into the sky.

Marisa growled. It seems I've been a bit careless. I don't forsee see any possible victory in challenging them all in the open like this. I'll just have to remember what I've seen for next time. In the mean time, I'll just let this run its course.

Havin' second thoughts, now? I told ya that you don't stand a chance. You know she's just playing with ya.

With any luck, I might be able to surprise her with this one.

Remilia smiled at Marisa. "Are you giving up? I expected much more from you."

Marisa pointed the Mini Hakkero towards Remilia once more. While muttering the incantation, Marisa launched beam after beam surrounding Remilia to block her escape. Remilia smirked, waiting for the inevitable dazzling beam of light. The spell finished, Marisa launched the attack. Remilia waited as she watched the beam approach.

Any moment now.

As expected, Remilia appeared behind Marisa once more. Marisa dropped the Mini Hakkero and quickly swung her arm towards Remilia's neck with all her might, a crude, bloody knife materializing in her hand as she swung. The knife got closer and closer until... Marisa's arm stopped firm, unable to complete the blow. Try as she might, it just wouldn't budge.

Marisa grunted and struggled to try to reach the vampire's neck with the bloody blade, but it was to no avail.

Remilia held out her hand and laughed. "You poor fool. You never even realized that your very blood has been under my control since the beginning. Don't you get it? You never did anything that I didn't allow. I could have killed you at any point."

Yeah, no. I think I'm done here.

"Going so soon?" Remilia said, just before snapping her fingers and ending Marisa's life.

Marisa glided low over the treetops near the foot of the mountain as she approached the mansion before her. The sun was beginning to sink lower in the sky.

Bah! This is going to be more difficult than I thought.

This power of yours is really startin' to give me chills. Or maybe it's just, you know, the DEATH part that's gettin' to me.

Marisa landed smoothly. She landed a fair distance away from the mansion, concealed by the foliage.

Alright, this worked against the guard last time.

Wait, you mean she's alive? Oh right... you haven't fought her yet.

Marisa quickly pulled out the knife with her right hand as she flipped it around in a defensive grip. Then she cautiously peered around the outer wall towards the gate. But the gate guard was gone!

She should be here! Where is she?!

Marisa held the knife firm as she cautiously approached the gate. At the gate, there was still no sign of her. Confused, Marisa opened the gate, and begun making her way through the courtyard. Marisa kept looking around, expecting Meiling to surprise her from behind.

"Hello, Chara."

Marisa quickly spun around to face the new voice.

I send my condolences to Chara on his absolutely pitiful showing this round. In all fairness, he picked one of the stronger opponents out of the list to try to bully. Added to that, he doesn't really have firm control over Marisa's powers just yet. It's not surprising, really.

And yes, Remilia is canonically that fast.

So, forgot to take this off my Watch list.

Chara's having a tough time of it. Really, there are few harder places for him to challenge than the Scarlet Devil Mansion when the Spell Card rules are void.

I appreciate the good showing that Meiling alone got, but it's also nice to see Remilia off the leash.

But now, it's The Goddamn Maid.

Looks like Chara might have to Reset, now that the Devil's Dog is on the hunt. Assuming even that works. I wouldn't have thought Remilia's power would notice the reLOADING, but thinking about it, isn't Chara's power just another way of manipulating Fate? And Sakuya can manipulate Time and Space.

If Chara chances a Reset, Marisa would be free, since Chara's starting point is before they met. Frisk would be back.

On that note: To the people who said "poor Frisk", let's not forget what Frisk willingly agreed to do to get to the point that they had to sell their soul to Chara. Frisk could have Reset at any time during the Genocide Run.

I'm not going to spoil anything, but...

That's actually open to interpretation because you never really know exactly what's going on in the character's head. More than likely, you are right, but there is that sliver of doubt on that point.

edit... I mean it's not like Chara was just sitting dormant, sipping Martinis waiting for everything to unfold. He undoubtedly had some kind of more direct effect with Frisk... What's unclear, is what effect exactly.

I'll go ahead and say this one because it's not going to spoil any story whatsoever. The only reason Sakuya can actually go back and change anything at all is because Chara can. Normally she can't change anything in the past, but since Chara did, Sakuya can piggy back off of that alternate timeline from that exact moment.

Really, there are few harder places for him to challenge than the Scarlet Devil Mansion when the Spell Card rules are void.
He could try to take on the mountain! I'd like to see him try that one. XD

I didn't figure Sakuya was "going back" so much as "she's being TAKEN back", or rather, her sense of Time and Space defies Chara's ability to fool.

In fact, I've never seen anyone suggest that Sakuya could time-travel or scry the past or future under her own power.

Regardless, Chara's going to learn that when you make an enemy of the Perfect and Elegant Maid, your Time is up.

As for fhe mountain, what is there to challenge Chara? Brute force, brute speed, simple tricks... Hina's manipulation of Misfortune could be an Out of Context problem, but everything else is just more of what he killed in Undertale. Not even the oni would pose a challenge, if they were still there.

Satori might be a wrinkle, but a mind-reader has limits to how well she can react to what she reads.

That's a very good way to view it. That's pretty much what's happening. Although the specifics are a complete mystery.

All I can say is... there are some unexpected interactions that would make Chara cry there.

Last edited:
That's just it, that particular interaction would be completely one sided. Besides, Reimu and Kasen are currently there... and Chara knows it.

I meant in general. It would be sad if after some point it will turn into some sort of "Chara Bashing"... Or whatever this thing is called in fanfiction community.

The story is interesting as long as there are at least some tension, and that is impossible while one side has no chance of winning... Of cource there are exeptions(One Punch Man), and some authors can make even one sided conflict interesting...

I did give a hint earlier that Chara isn't really in control of Marisa's powers just yet. In other words, Marisa is actually slowing him down a bit at the moment.

Take that hint however you will.

Edit... and when it comes to Chara, losing the fight is a far cry from losing the war.
