Hi everyone! I'm getting together a succession game for CK2. This thread will be used to organize, set up, sign up, play, and post AARs of the game we play.

Other games:
A Flame Against the Dark

Succession Game

A Succession Game is basically a Let's Play done by multiple people. The first player plays the game until a certain checkpoint, then saves it and sends it to the next player down the line. In some games, like Dwarf Fortress or Civilization, you play until a certain amount of in-game time or turns have passed. Say, a year in DF or 100 turns in Civ V. For the purpose of this Let's Play, each player will play until a succession happens. That is to say, each player will play one ruler from the dynasty, and when that ruler dies, it's time to save the game and send it to the next player.

Players will express interest, we'll vote on how to start, then we'll get started.

Rules
  • No Cheating! Console commands, etc are not allowed.
  • Don't savescum. If something bad or interesting happens, stick with it, it will make a more interesting story.
  • Once your character dies, stop playing immediately. The next character is for the next person in the succession game.
  • You have a week to complete your turn. If you can't do so, send the save file, and write an AAR (doesn't need to be long, just cover the basics, like X happened and X county was acquired etc) please let me know.

What bookmark should we start at?
[ ] 769 AD - Early Middle Ages (Requires Charlemagne DLC): The Early Middle Ages started with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the early 5th century. The earlier part of this era saw the great Germanic and Slavic migrations across Europe, with peoples such as the Goths and Lombards settling in Southern Europe, the Franks settling in Gaul and Saxons crossing the sea and settling in Britain. The Eastern Roman Empire was violently shaken by the pressure from the Goths and Vars, and fought bitterly with the ancient Persian enemy. The rise of Islam saw the Arabs conquering immense amounts of territory in the Middle East and North Africa, and in India several great dynasties vied for dominance, with the Rashtrakutas rising towards the end of the 8th century. In the steppes, the Khazars grew in power, and in Scandinavia things were about to change in a way that was to affect the entire continent.
[ ] 867 AD - Viking Age (Requires The Old Gods DLC): By the middle of the 9th century, the Norse raiders and adventurers known as the Vikings had already begun to set their indelible mark on the map of Europe, establishing realms in Russia and the British Isles and travelling and raiding as far as the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. The Karling rulers, descendants of Charlemagne, ruled mighty realms in France, Germany, and Italy, while the Muslim religion was now firmly established in Spain under the Umayyads. The Byzantine emperor held on, though suffering under increasing pressure from the Caliphate and the Bulgarians. West of the fractured Steppes, the Magyars were poised to make their claim on the Carpathian basin. Islam was spreading rapidly in Persia under rulers such as the Saffraids, and had penetrated into the Indus valley. Further East, the Hindu Pratihara dynasty was expanding.
[ ] 1066 AD - High Middle Ages: By the late 10th and early 11th centuries the Muslim world was changing, with Turkish dynasties such as the Seljuks and Ghaznavids now dominating Persia. The Byzantine Empire was still holding its own but was to see worse times coming. Central and Western continental Europe was split between France and a strong Holy Roman Empire, while Christian kings were advancing against a fractured and weakened Muslim Spain. Scandinavia was quickly converting to Christianity, and the Norse settlers in Russia and Britain had become assimilated with the local populations. Yet Viking descendants in Normandy and Italy were preparing new conquests, and the time of the First Crusade was approaching.
[ ] 1220 AD - Age of the Mongols: As Europe entered the 13th century, Constantinople had been weakened by the Turks and sacked by the Fourth Crusade, so the Byzantine Empire was very much weakened. The Turks still reigned in the Middle East and Persia. In India many new kingdoms vied for power after the fall of the old dynasties. The Norman conquest had brought new political and dynastic struggles to England and France, the Christian kingdoms in Spain were continually growing stronger, Scandinavia had left paganism behind and was becoming more centralized. In Russia several principalities struggled for power in the shadow of the Bolghars and the Cumans to the east. In Germany and Italy, the Holy Roman Empire still stood firm, but beyond all this, to the east, a new power was to come into play. When the Mongols broke into Eastern Europe and Persia, it changed the balance of power in all of Western Eurasia.
[ ] Other (write in). Note, I left out some smaller bookmarks like The Alexiad as well as the 1337 start which I think would be too short to get everyone to have a turn since the game ends in 1453.

What region should we be in?
[ ] British Isles
[ ] France
[ ] Iberia
[ ] Germany / Frisia
[ ] Scandinavia
[ ] Italy / Sicily
[ ] Byzantine Empire / ERE (Includes Greece and Anatolia)
[ ] Armenia / The Caucasus
[ ] North/West of Black Sea (Bulgaria, Hungary, Avar, Ukraine
[ ] Other Russia, Ruthenia, Baltic, or Slavic tribes
[ ] Arabia
[ ] The Levant
[ ] Persia
[ ] Baluchistan / Afghanistan
[ ] India
[ ] The Steppes
[ ] North Africa
[ ] West Africa
[ ] East Africa

What Rank should we start at?
[ ] Count
[ ] Duke
[ ] King (super easy mode, lame)

What religion group should we be?
[ ] Christian
[ ] Israelite/Jewish (Requires Sons of Abraham DLC)
[ ] Islam/Muslim (Requires Sword of Islam DLC)
[ ] Pagan (Requires The Old Gods DLC)
[ ] Mazdan/Zoroastrian (Requires The Old Gods DLC)
[ ] Dharman/Indian (Requires Rajas of India DLC)

You don't need to vote for religion group or location, it's optional, just vote for what you like, since not all combinations are valid, and we'll work it out. We can sort out the sect/heresy, details etc once we know.

That should just about cover it, let me know if you have any questions. Please sign up and vote on how we start if you're interested!

Additional rule clarifications:

- If your ruler dies within 1 year of taking the throne, play the next ruler too.
- If you're offered the immortality event chain, turn it down

I'm in, schedule permitting.

[X] 769 AD - Early Middle Ages (Requires Charlemagne DLC)
[X] British Isles
[X] Duke
[X] Christian

Specifically pushing for Wessex; you start as an independent 4-(or 3- maybe? don't remember)county duke with no vassals, which provides enough counties to be interesting in the early game, and England is a nice little sandbox to play around in with a bunch of pre-built rivalries and alliances and nice breeding politics.

edited to add: [X] Christian

BTW, I just changed it so we're voting on religion group now. You don't need to vote for religion group or location, it's optional, just vote for what you like, since not all combinations are valid, and we'll work it out.

The Wessex plan looks fun. Here's once that has been bouncing around for me:

[X] 867 AD - Viking Age (Requires The Old Gods DLC)
[X] Other Russia, Ruthenia, Baltic, or Slavic tribes
[X] Duke
[X] Pagan (Requires The Old Gods DLC)

Let's get some paganism up in here! Invade some places, raid some places, reform some religions!

I'm pretty much happy with anything though

As an additional caveat, I'd prefer we pick a ruler whose coat of arms isn't completely ugly. No Icelings for me please and thankyou!

I have no real preference about anything other than can we start as someone with a few relatives to allow for bad luck cutting us off early?

I have the DLC which allows you to customise that, so we may be able to get around that issue depending on how using it affects your save.

I'll add that in case it's useful information, the only 3 DLC I haven't picked up is the new music pack and the Viking and Full Plate Metal.

Also the Ebook but I don't really view that as DLC.

I think the Ruler Designer is savegame-compatible with people who don't own the Ruler Designer, but IIRC you can't just change the coat of arms, you have to make an entire custom ruler, and it does completely overwrite the ruler and their dynasty with your custom ones, so Ruler Designer characters are generally the only member of their dynasty?

I'm actually okay with this, but just want to point it out.

Alternatively, we might be able to just edit the coat of arms in the savegame file if it ends up being an issue (you can force CK2 to spit out savefiles in txt rather than binary format, and it's pretty obvious what does what).

I'm reasonably sure that you can change the Coat of Arms at the same place that you can change the Dynasty name in game. I'll check.

Edit: Through the customize house option when you click on the coat of arms, you can change dynasty name and coat of arms, but only if all members of your house are under your rule.

There's a content pack called like "coat of arms customizer" I think that, in-game, lets you change your dynasty coat of arms. I am fairly certain that a save made with this content pack can be opened by someone who doesn't have it.

I have all pretty much DLCs and content packs (yes I'm aware all together it's like $200, i'm just... yeah) so I always forget what is and isn't core mechanic

Same here. I also have the same for EU4. I try not to think about how much it cost me. I did get them over time though.

Conclave I think deals with laws, child education, and council stuff—doesn't have regions, religions, etc, so there's no reason that it should be impossible I think. I'll test to see if we can go back and forth between "has conclave DLC" and "doesn't have conclave DLC"

Already indicated my interest in the main thread but might as well make it official here. Any start is fine with me

Ok just to tally things up:

Interested Players:

@Blazinghand
@Death and Faxes
@MostlyVisibleLight
@Darrenb209
@Ceslas
@EliudFS1
@Walker Of Chaos

The major expansions for Ck2 are

Sword of Islam
Legacy of Rome
The Republic
The Old Gods
Sons of Abraham
Rajas of India
Charlemagne
Way of Life
Horse Lords
Conclave
The Reapers Due
Monks and Mystics

Does anyone not have any of these expansions? Celas mentioned not having Conclave. Some of these like Rajas of India we probably don't care about but it'll be good to know anyways

also, leaving out Sunset Invasion again because reasons. I think most people don't like it

Hey guys, completely unrelated, but could we all agree to go with the Ultimegature (is that spelled right?) succession law? The one where the youngest child inherits. I feel that would almost always guarantee we all start with a young heir and we build up from there.

Edit: Just a suggestion, that's all.

I usually try to go for Elective Monarchy and just pick a good heir (young, good stats, etc). This gets around the problem of Seniority (short reigns due to high age, can't pick/raise heir) and Primogeniture.

I have heard Ultimogeniture is also a good strat if you're careful, though. You just keep having kids till you get a good one, then stop. The only downside of Ultimogeniture is increased chance of a regency, which causes all sorts of problems. Probably better than Gavelkind or Seniority, maybe better than Primogeniture. Of course, these things are fairly easy to change anyways. Elective Monarchy, if you can swing it, gives the best outcomes for picking a young and good-traits heir.

While we could do that, I think that it would be more interesting if we were stuck with who we got.

All the same, I'll stick with what is chosen. Biggest problem with Ultimogeniture is if Conclave is active the regencies ruin you.

I believe if we do Wessex we get... elective gavelkind? Which is going to be great fun (or at least priesthoods) for the whole family.

I assume if we get extremely unlucky and it CTD's, it doesn't count as save-scumming to continue before it?

Yeah, we should probably allow reloading in this case, and also allow you to keep playing the next ruler if your ruler dies in the first year or something.

I don't think we can use Official Ironman anyways, since I don't think that lets us pass it between users (IIRC it default uses Steam Cloud sync?)

yeah in the event of a crash or something just go to your most recent save.

Yeah, we should probably allow reloading in this case, and also allow you to keep playing the next ruler if your ruler dies in the first year or something.

I think this is also a good idea just from a fun perspective. So I'll add it in. If your ruler dies within 1 year of taking the throne, play the next ruler too.

I'd be interested in playing, and have all the DLCs.

I have no opinion on who we play as, save for that we don't play as Muslims. I don't enjoy playing interacting with the decadence mechanic. I find it to be an unfun mechanic that doesn't fulfill its intended goal.

But regencies with Conclave is the best part of the game, I would argue.

I personally find it fun to maneuver the in-realm political field in a regency. Every Lord is turned into a wildcard and there is a real rush to establish non-aggression pacts with them by marrying your relatives to their family members, or by any other means nessesary. Thus preventing them from joining factions.

For me, it's a mode where you are always on your toes and you got to be careful. Though this is only my opinion, and I understand that not many would share my views.

But seriously, election law has fucked me over more often than regencies do. Besides your control over the development of your young character is so much better when you are playing as him.

Anyways, I am fine with most succession laws, regardless. This is just my personal opinion.
