The Cerdicings of Britannia: A Crusader Kings 2 Succession Game

Is the rest of the AAR going to come along btw or should we move on to the next guy? if not a quick summary could be helpful

It'll be coming. Sorry, I had a whole bunch more typed up and then lost it and it was a pretty big blow to my morale. By all means Theravis can get started while I redo what I did, probly a couple hours from now.

I think @Theravis is moving house right now (from what he said in the other CK2 AAR thread), so it's not a huge rush. I am eager to read what happens next though! :)

AAR Turn 9, stratigo as Ælfwald II Cerdicing Part 2
Last time on the chronicles of Aelfwald the gouty dimwit!

The great emperor of Britannia found a book that told him how awesome norse gods are.

His reaction to this was quite swift

So! Now that all the crosses have been burnt! What do we do now? Well we follow the greatest of Germanic traditions! Killing the fuck out of our fellow northerners!

There's a method to the madness of course. Specifically this

(Spoilers, I win)

Denmark controlled three out of five holy sights needed for reform, and darn it, I was going to be Fylkir!

The war itself was pretty basic. Send of a large stack of men

(Roughly 6 thousand men starved to death on this particular march)

Watch most of them die horribly to attrition in the really crappy scandinavian provinces

And blitz down the castles of the Danes and their allies while occasionally smacking their army

(Repeat this about 20 times and you get the general flow of battle between me and the Danes)

(A shot of our newly conquered lands)

Now something interesting that happened in the war was a faction that, at its peak, contained roughly 150 percent the power of my army.

(This is before the king in wales joined in)

Luckily, thousands of hours of CK2 experience tells you bribery goes a long way

And, viola, no more giant scary faction

During the war Aelfwulf also had two more sons. Important because, well, you'll see.

So with the danish war concluded, it was time to set my eyes on the last Germanic holy site. Bad news, I had no CB for it. Good news is that I could conquer the province right next to it and then pick it off without breaking truce. I spend a couple years letting my levies and retinue build up and generally sleeping around and ignoring my hermatic duties

(Seriously, this and the skygazing quests are terrible. I did successfully fund an expedition though)

To be continued!

AAR Turn 9, stratigo as Ælfwald II Cerdicing Part 3
So, time to take luneberg from burgundy as a stepping stone to Braunchweig (or however you spell it)

(can YOU spot the mistake I made here?)

Burgundy is weak and in multiple wars, so I should only need local troops to conquer it

Ooooor not.... bleh, send some more men

No, I'm not staring into space for you

(Seriously, I never get anything but bad results from this)

Nice and easy victory like I said

Wait a second. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaait a Second

How di... wha.... who....

ODIN DAMMIT!

It's okay, it's an easy fix.

On speed blitz later

And much better

Next stop Brau... Brand... Bro.... the next holy site. Then I'll just need to go a raiding and everything will come out mil...... *Hurk!*

And so ends the saga of Aelfwald the gouty dimwit!

Nice work @stratigo! We're close to reformation and appropriately.. Germanic! Ælfwald III is just a child and so surely has enough time to do some great things!

@Theravis, the ball is in your court. Conquer Bran-whatever, reform the faith, or whatever your choice is! Reposting the save link in case you haven't had a chance to download it: (link)

So, after Theravis does his turn, everyone will have had at least one turn. I'm just going to restart at the top of the queue again unless someone wants out. @Death and Faxes, @Darrenb209, @Ceslas, @EliudFS1, @Walker Of Chaos, @Jorlem, @Zooboss, @stratigo, if you want to be removed from the queue, please let me know. Judging by the average reign length we've had so far (~25 years) there's enough time for everyone to get a second turn before the end of CK2.

It's gonna be super rough for theravis, and he's certain to experience a few revolts AND we lost demense to gravelkind. Which is one reason why I wanted an optimum retinue. It would be tough keeping up with our vassals just on demense troops alone. Also our retinue was not just unoptimal, it was set up to fire bad tactics which is bad.

While I don't need to be removed from the queue yet, I will warn you that their is the possibility that I may need to be depending on when my turn would be. Life's gotten a little busy right now.

What religion are the vassals? Did they mostly convert, or are they still Christian?

they are, except the brother that inheritted and the danish king we conquered, universally christian. I couldn't ask for them to convert until I reformed the faith. :D
Oh man, "Demand Religious Conversion" is a reformed-faith only thing huh. Also, I'm guessing Proselytizing doesn't work, we're stuck with Gavelkind (or Elective Gavelkind) barring cultural methods (ultimo for steppes people, tanistry for picts and irish), etc. If we still have Religious Revocation Law bear in mind that it makes it legal to revoke catholic titles but they'll still give all catholic vassals -15 opinion if you do.

Converting back to Christianity is also an option. (I didn't know if stratigo had prepped the realm by secretly converting the vassals before switching openly, I believe that bypasses the restriction on demanding conversion.)

Hirstorically speaking that is what usually happens. The Pharoah Aknanaten for instance made Egypt monotheistic and worshipped the single god Aten, but his descendents immediately went back to the Pantheon. Religious debates believe this to be the Pharoah from the story of Joseph or even possibly Joseph himself, gaining a new name besides Zaphnath-Paanea upon ascent to the throne as he was he highest ranking Egyptian at the time. Genesis describes him as Pharoah in all but name.

nah, that would've taken too long. My char was 37 and had gout. I knew I was on a short clock. I WAS hoping to make it to the 50s. I was probably roughly 3 years from reforming the faith when I died. Picking up the last holy site and then I'd have to loot around 20ish temples in raiding to get the authority, and also the piety. But the RNG was merciless, I had also picked up stressed.

Converting back is 100 percent trivial though. You'll still have to wait til you are grown up though (If I recall the decision correctly), but getting the option to go germanic pagan was just way too interesting to pass up at the level we were in the game

I do wish knights weren't so shit in the game though. The way CK2 tactics work you never want 3 types of units in an army (and you never want Horse archers until they fix how bad their tactics are). Pikeman, heavy infantry, and knights all in one army means that most tactics will hurt one of them. And Pikemen and heavy infantry are so much easier to mass.

Yeah. If I hadn't died when I did, I would have started replacing the HI retinue units with knights until it was pure.

Factoring in the changes, looks like I'm up next. I'll be working with the save stratigo left: (link)
