The Argent-Eyed Heiress (Naruto/Exalted)

Since when does Essence hurt you?
I mean without a specific charm that causes it.

This is from the homebrew mote reactor for Kerisgame. Once you've triggered it, it causes physical exhaustion in exchange for a constant stream of motes. Hinata has an inferior version right now, so her exhaustion piles up extremely quickly, even when she's only getting 1 mote/action. Mote reactor was not picked as an option to pursue either which means that she's not completely in control of it either - but that actually has some benefits. :V

That said, don't expect Exalted metaphysics and Naruto metaphysics to mesh exactly.

[X] PLAN EYE SCREAM

Can some one remind me how the mutations work for the forms again? Are they permanent, or only when she's transformed? Can the negatives be bought off, or not taken?

Because I really, really don't like those attack and control mutations.

You pick a form, and in that form you install the mutations you want.

Each positive mutation costs 1m per point; each negative mutation gives you a 1m/1 point discount on what you've installed.
For example, the Large positive mutation costs 6 points, which means equipping it costs 6m.
But if you pair it with the Large appetite negative mutation, which costs 4 points, you get a 4 point/4m discount, meaning you only spend 2m.

You still have to suffer the consequences of the negative mutation you have installed.
For example, with Large Appetite, you'd have Hinata eating like an adult Akimichi.

You aren't forced to install any mutation you don't want.
Unless the GM has a houserule.

This explanation is true, but only because we specifically bought the Charm to make it work that way. Without Hybrid Nue Transformation, we would have to turn completely into a copy of the form we're copying, and can't mix them at all.

*Just realized Mote Reactor didn't win* ... Son Of A Bitch!

Gah. Just... ffffuuuuuuck. Did anyone even argue for it? I don't remember.

Yes:
[x] Mote Reactor (combat)
(seems borderline mandatory)
It actually got 20 votes and almost made the cut. The 5th "Team Eight Retreat" only got 21.

[ ] Continues practicing with the Wooden Ring
Imo this needs Kurenai presence, if only to point out when and where it doesn't behave as genjutsu.

[ ] Investigates the Black Quill.
Decent option, and imo the best investigation out of the three items. But i'd prefer if Hinata was healthy before starting to mess with strange stuff.
Because, and i'm going on a limb here, but this looks like the standard Fuijutsu option, which means without a tutor (and you are named Naruto or a random Sue SI) that's decent chance of blowing yourself up, or at least losing fingers.

[ ] Digs out a weed with the knife when no one's looking?
While it could be interesting (top of my head: health-steal effect) it's logically better to wait until Hinata is in perfect good health before experimenting, specially when that requires going out of the hospital while she still randomly faints.

[X] Focuses on resting.
The faster she is healed, the faster she can start working on useful stuff (also keep her training up). I don't really want her to spend weeks in the hospital when she could get out of it faster.
Also, since she's actively working on it, she might unlock some self-healing skill(s) ?

QM Note: Normally, there wouldn't even be a voting option here and I'd barrel on with the rest of the update, but it's getting kind of ridiculously long so I decided to make pause here and let people remember this quest exists. The next time this happens, I may forego having there be a vote at all though.
Imo, every update doesn't necessarily needs a vote. If there's nothing intersting to vote for, or if you have a good idea just roll with it.

Cue the Flying Pigs
It's been a while since I've posted in this thread. Not for any real reason: I'm still reading and enjoying this quest. I just don't feel like I have much to say.

Um… I like the worldbuilding, how skilfully you've blended Naruto canon together with elements from Exalted. The Chakra Orchid, for example. Apparently, it's a horror from the Exalted mythos, but it fits perfectly in the Narutoverse. Its connection to Senju Hashirama makes a lot of sense and is very intriguing. I don't know where the "world of ash" came from or why Hinata keeps seeing glimpses of it, but it seems suitably creepy and disturbing. I like the mention of Hyuugas who've seen "too much" and now suffer from "schizophrenic hallucinations". That's horrific. And awesome.

Another reason why I rarely post is that I spend a lot of time thinking and mulling over what I want to write before I write it (and, by then, if I had anything interesting to say, it's likely that someone's already said it).

Several months ago, I was very amused by Hinata's turning into a flying pig (or wild boar). I started thinking about writing an omake for it. By now, looking back, I'm surprised nobody's already made this joke. It seems kind of obvious.

But oh well. Someone has to go for the low-hanging fruit and it might as well be me.

Here's my omake (based on Week 2: Flying with Naruto):

Cue the Flying Pigs
While Sakura was walking down the street, she realised she was being followed. There was a clunk, clunk, clunk of someone who was very determined, on crutches, and hobbling after her. She didn't recognise him at first: he was so swathed in bandages that, for a moment, she felt afraid that she was being stalked by one of the genin from Hidden Sound. That creepy guy with the musical arm – what was his name? Dosu?

But then, she realised who it really was. She recognised him by his distinctive, blinding white toothy grin. Rock Lee had escaped from the hospital.

'Sakura Haruno, my fragrant cherry blossom, I'm glad I have found you!' he exclaimed.

A few curious passers-by came to investigate the source of the loud noise. Sakura winced and did her best to end this quickly. She didn't want witnesses to what was sure to be an embarrassing encounter. 'Uh… Lee, you need to go back to hospital. You'll never heal if you keep getting out of bed like this. You need to stay put. Please… just go.'

'You're worried about me?' Lee said, clasping his hands together, stars in his eyes. He nearly fell over, but managed to grab his crutches just in time. 'I knew you cared! I knew you'd realise that I am the perfect man for you! And if I'm not, I will run around the walls of Konoha, backwards, on my h–'

'Lee, you're a fellow Konoha ninja. A comrade in arms,' Sakura interjected quickly before he could make any more extravagant promises. 'I care about that, but–'

'You do care about me!' Lee crowed. 'Sakura, will you go on a date with me?'

At this point, Sakura lost her temper. If she hadn't been so worried about Lee's injuries and the possibility of making them worse, she would have taken a swing at him. 'Yeah, when pigs fly!' she raged.

Lee was distracted for a moment, peering up at the sky, staring at something. Then, he gave her another brilliant smile. 'That's great! I'll pick you up at 6.30 tonight. I'm thinking barbecue. Is that all right with you?'

Bewildered, Sakura turned to look at what Lee had just seen. She saw an enormous pig flying overhead, furiously beating its wings in an attempt to avoid crashing into the Hokage's tower. And, on its back… Naruto? Wait, what?

When she didn't reply, Lee took that as agreement. 'Excellent! I'll see you tonight!'

'B-but, I didn't say where to meet or… or anything,' Sakura gabbled.

'Don't worry, I know where you live!' Lee assured her.

Sakura shuddered.

Shuffling around in a circle, Lee turned back to the hospital. He managed a surprising turn of speed on his crutches, almost a gallop, but no doubt he was doing irreparable damage to his already-broken legs in the process.

Mortified, Sakura sank to the floor, holding her head in her hands, mumbling, 'Oh, help me, Kami-sama!'

She felt even worse when the crowd of onlookers started clapping and cheering. They all agreed that it had been a good show.

Meanwhile, Hiashi Hyuuga was making his report to the Hyuuga elders: a group of stern and wizened old men. Trying to sound as if he were entirely convinced of what he was saying, he said, 'Despite her confidence issues, Hinata has proved extraordinarily gifted. With her recent progress in the Chunin Exams, her triumph over the branch family's greatest prodigy, and her training with Jiraiya the great Toad Sage, I firmly believe that she is worthy of her status as heiress. She will be a strong and capable leader.'

Several of the clan elders smirked. One of them sniggered behind his hands. Another, bolder than the rest, sneered, 'When pigs fly!'

For a moment, Hiashi looked despondent. Then, he looked out of the window. The ghost of a smirk haunted his lips. 'I'm glad you agree with me,' he said placidly.

As one man, the council of elders turned to gaze through the window. Eyes widened. Jaws dropped. One man dropped his pipe. They were all stunned into silence and Hiashi had little difficulty getting them to agree with everything he said for the rest of the meeting. Before long, they would come to regret their inattentiveness.

'It's no good,' said Yushin, treasurer of Konoha's civilian council. 'I've tried everything, but I can't get these figures to balance. We're out by nearly two hundred million ryu.'

'We're going to have to raise taxes,' said Chairman Nao, who looked gleeful at the prospect.

'Over my dead body!' yelled Shigeo, the representative from the Merchants' Union.

While they were arguing, everyone else was staring out the window at the huge boar that was flying over Konoha on great feathery wings, carrying a young boy on its back. Finally, reluctantly, they turned their attention back to the issue they were supposed to be debating.

'Mmm. Shigeo-san, did you say, "When pigs fly"?' asked Juro the lawmaker.

'No! I said "Over my dead body!"' snapped Shigeo.

'Oh. Well, I suppose that can be arranged,' said Juro, reaching for his ceremonial katana.

Shigeo drew one of the many kunai he'd secreted about his person. 'Bring it on, melon-face!'

As today's lively discussion descended into yet another brawl, Yushin cried, 'Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! We've only just finished redecorating after last time!'

'Why do we allow weapons in here, anyway?' asked Nao.

Yushin didn't reply because someone had grabbed him, pulled him out of his chair, and got him in a headlock.

With a sigh, Nao drew his massive nodachi and waded into the fray. Just another day at Konoha's civilian council, no different from the last. He should really stop encouraging them like this.

Non-canon silliness, yay!

I'm sure you've all seen Youtube videos of brawls breaking out in various parliaments around the world. It amuses me to think that every day in Konoha's civilian council is like that. Uh... well, it makes as much sense as most fanon.

I know.
We weren't talking in the abstract, we were talking about Hinata.
The faster she is healed, the faster she can start working on useful stuff (also keep her training up). I don't really want her to spend weeks in the hospital when she could get out of it faster.
Not the way healing works for an Exalt.
As long as she's not engaged in physical activity, she'll be mostly healed in a couple days.
Nor do they lose physical conditioning or skills because they had a hospital stay; they're bullshit like that.
Also, since she's actively working on it, she might unlock some self-healing skill(s) ?
We already made our charm picks for this training period.
