Interviewing Smithy ...?
Maybe you can interview Smithy?

Although, having said that …. "I don't suppose we would be able to interview Smithy?" Red and Green both look apprehensive, but Pink pouts indignantly.

"You just said we were interesting, but now you want to go somewhere else?" Green shakes his head at her outburst.

"They want to interview Smithy, Pink. They wish to observe his brilliance first-hand, no doubt – and if we are interesting, how much more so must be the one who made us?" Pink considers the argument for a moment, then allows herself to be mollified. Red, however, looks toward the castle before shaking his head.

"We can't make that decision. If you want to try, you should talk to Exor." You look toward the castle – and the sword rising among the towers. The sword must be Exor, then. You nod and look at the Axem Rangers.

"I see. Thank you for speaking with us." You stand and bow, and although the Rangers don't react, Hatate follows when you leave the room.

"So we're going to try talking to a giant sword. That's gotta be a new one." You snort at Hatate and shake your head as you float up the staircase to exit the ship.

"I suppose its size is rather impressive, but are you telling me you've never met a weapon tsukumogami?" She shakes her head.

"It's not the same thing, Aya – not if the Rangers were telling the truth." You chuckle.

"Ah, semantics. Arguing that two things that are almost the same thing are completely different, right?" She scowls at you as you fly off toward the castle and the gigantic sword. It's impossible to tell its proportions, and you take a picture before landing on the tower closest to it. Close up, you can see the impression of a closed mouth where the blade meets the hilt, and the crossguard seems to be claws. The pommel is carved in the shape of a small horned head as well, with blazing eyes. And then one great eye, wider than one of your wings, slowly opens, examining you. You tilt your head, and the right eye opens fully, followed by the left. Exor's mouth works for a moment, then opens.

"Are you supplicants?" Exor's voice is deep and gravelly, but not ponderous. You frown and look at Hatate; still flying, she shrugs, and you turn back to Exor.

"No, we're reporters. We'd like to interview Smithy." Exor doesn't react to your announcement for a long moment, and you wonder if he's communicating with someone else.

"If you wish to abase yourselves before Smithy, bring to him one of this world's six Wishing Stars." You frown, and Exor's eyes narrow. Something below you rumbles, a great solid mass churning motionlessly, and after a few seconds the sound increases, and the tower begins trembling. Exor doesn't shake at all, though, despite the fact that he should be vibrating madly – and as his mouth begins chewing, the air around you begins vibrating. You take a step back, and something smashes open behind you.

"Ah! Ha, ha … hold …." You spin as Exor's attack fades, and you see a red-armored figure leaning against the parapet, wheezing almost as badly as Patchouli does during a bad attack. He waves toward you or Exor. "Just … hold on …." Hatate gives you a bewildered look. You shrug in response; what else can you do? The newcomer regains his composure quickly, however, and glares at you from underneath his great helmet and through the great bushy hedge of white hair that is probably something similar to a beard. "Ahem! You must be the cowardly ruffians who simply watched your fellows below waste their strength attacking this fortress. And now I find you trying to sneak your way past all our defenses!" He yanks his great sword out of its scabbard and points it toward you. Whether he's one of Smithy's creations or simply a lieutenant, you don't think he'd be using an odachi as long as you are tall without being skilled in its use. "Have you any final words, coward?" You smile tightly.

"Not right now, but when it comes my time to die, I'll try to think of something. We aren't here to attack you, we're just reporters trying to interview Smithy." The swordsman holds himself motionless for a moment, then shakes with fury.

"An interview? With Smithy? Ha! As if he would ever degrade himself by explaining things to you fodder – much less actually stop his great work! Even were you to bring those 'Star Pieces' that are supposed to be oh-so-important, I doubt you would make it to the Director, much less Smithy!" His sword whips around and he sheathes it fluidly. "Go and run, little chicken-girl! Don't come clucking around here again!" He storms forward, walking past you, and as he stands before Exor his demeanor softens. "I am sorry for not stopping them sooner, old friend. You can go back to sleep, until Yaridovich or those Axem Rangers find and retrieve a Star Piece." Exor's large eyes slowly close, and the swordsman's shoulders relax fractionally.

I don't actually remember who this swordsman is supposed to be.

Okay, so … depending on how generously you read the votes, there may or may not be a tie. Depends on whether you count the parts of @Mantissa and @Yellow Paint 's votes that don't have proper formatting as valid or not; if you do, then there's a tie, and if you don't, then trying to give an old man a heart attack wins. Normally I'm inclined to forgive formatting slips, but leftover irritation from work has disinclined me to be charitable, and since there's probably some outside work that needs doing, I'm going to preemptively call a tie and declare that voting will remain open until at least in case anyone wants to adjust their votes or anything. As usual, voting will remain open until I actually close it, and if I do have yard work then it might be open until this evening or something. 🤷 Anyway, just a quick heads-up about that.

Votes are locked, and … same problem. Just now if I don't count the vote, it's tied, and it's not tied if I don't count it :/ Right, coin-flip, I guess.

You cross your arms and lean back, fighting the impulse to simply toss the idiot off the tower. You wouldn't even throw him into the chasm, no, you'd just drop him into the courtyard where his allies could find him … but you're not here for that, and tossing one of his soldiers off a roof is unlikely to make Smithy more interested in actually being interviewed by you. "Are you really sure about that? Should you be making decisions for your boss like that? This is a very different situation compared to what your instructions were based on, so maybe you should ask someone with more responsibility, first." The swordsman's shoulders stiffen again and he slowly turns to face you.

"Do you really think that? My instructions are to prevent anyone from bothering Smithy. If you aren't here to present him with a Star Piece, you're going to be a bother." You smile, technically; nothing that spreads terribly far, but your mouth makes the proper shape.

"Tsk, tsk. Poor Smithy; did he get you as part of a bargain - buy five Axem Rangers, get one washed-up old swordsman free? What you're doing technically counts as a coup d'état, you know? You think you're important enough to make policy decisions for Smithy regarding events and powers you've never even heard of. What's next, now that Exor's back to sleep you decide to keep the Star Pieces for yourself? Or are you going to follow through properly and deal with Smithy?" The swordsman starts trembling with rage as you start talking, but by the time you stop he's stock-still. Did you push him too far?

"... You … you accuse me of disloyalty? You … you … accuse …." He doesn't seem stunned by your accusation, so much as - confused. Did you get someone too stupid to be confused? Those kinds are always trouble - but, no, he starts laughing. "You - haha - you, accuse - hahaha! Oh, I haven't heard anything so funny in years. I think I'll kill you quickly." He yanks at his sword, simply tearing the scabbard from his belt and flinging it off the blade instead of drawing it properly, then moves like Axem Black, blurring toward you. You dart into the air, and the swordsman thrusts his sword where you had been, driving forward until he plunges it deep into the stone parapet. He stares at the result of his attack for several seconds, then slowly turns around, keeping his hands on the sword as he searches for you. You descend to the rooftop again, even as Hatate flees upward. A small circle appears around him and the flash that covers him turns his armor blue. He rips his sword from the stone, swinging it around to point at you again.

"Really? Do I have to fight people just to interview them? First I beat up the Axem Rangers, now I'm being attacked by an asthmatic swordsman. After I get past you and meet Smithy, once I tell him I want to interview him, is he going to insist on a duel before sitting down and talking?"

"AYA! The sword!" You frown at the swordsman for a moment, but he hasn't moved. As you feel the ground start to tremble, you half-turn and look at the other sword. Exor is awake, and its mouth is chewing rapidly once more.
