It's not a good idea for an average sized guy to have his move set be built around high flying moves. Besides not only is this one of the most versatile styles but this is also her prefered style which means she should be even better at teaching it. You don't go to a Karate teacher and ask them to teach you Tae Kwon Do.

I'd go for the Daybreak Match if it it weren't for the Weird Gimmicks Trait, since I really don't want to end up with some Goldust like gimmick. I think the Cocky Gimmick would go really well with the Academy, since Horizon is all about the promos. Tommy could easily become a great heel of he's the cocky average sized rookie, with 'boring' submission matches, who shows up and demands respect from veterans and hostile crowds alike, all while disrespecting them.

In my mind, I'm thinking of Kurt Angle, when he stopped a match to tell the crowd not to boo an Olympic Gold medallist.

I'll go with a cocky submission specialist. I'm thinking this is the path to a Kurt Angle or Chris Jericho type of build.
 
I actually think that most of the famous wrestlers are actually a mix of this options, like Kurt Angle being a submission and mat wrestling, Daniel Bryan being an aerial and submission one and many others, so maybe once we hit the big leagues or something like that we will branch out a little, so we should select good combinations.
