TECHNICAL HELP HERE

Does this thread help those with hardware issues, or just software? I've got a desktop I had built recently by a PC repair shop, using custom parts I ordered in online (they're all compatible with one another, besides the power supply; the shop gave me one which worked there) and now I've got it home and plugged it in it refuses to display something to the monitor. I've tried three different ones and they all say no signal; I have no clue what to do :(

You may have multiple monitor outputs. Check the motherboard for a VGA or DVI out. If it has one, that's most likely the default out until you set it to use the graphics card. Plug it in, and then set the default to your graphics card in the BIOS settings. There might be other things, but if it worked at the repair place, that's probably it.

I wouldn't know what worked at the repair place, seeing as I wasn't the one to pick it up. It's been sitting there for roughly two weeks since being built, actually (got built last Friday), but due to a combo of misunderstandings (dad thought I was gonna pick it up, I thought he was) and me having no transport but bus (how am I meant to take a heavy desktop home without a car, eh?) I only got it this evening when Dad picked it up from the store. He did it without me on the way back from a football match or something, so I haven't seen the shop clerks since we handed it over, either.

I'll check shops for the alternate monitor input/output thing tomorrow, I guess, see about grabbing a monitor accepting one of them. Can you use HDMI to connect a monitor these days? Should I grab one of DVI and HDMI (VGA is what I tried to use)?

It's not the type of output that matters it's which card you're connecting to. Some motherboards have onboard video. By default those are what's used until you set it to the PCIe port in the BIOS. Take a picture of the back of the computer showing all of the ports with nothing pluged in? That might help determine if that's the case or not.

Or if you have the parts list, post that.

I see, I see. So the desktop may be compatible with my current monitor regardless, it just isn't defaulting to the type it uses.

Ok so I've circled some things on the spoilered image.
The red is the ports for the motherboard's onboard video. Make sure you try plugging into this one first. The blue is your graphics card(s). I can't tell if there's one or two cards because of lighting. After trying one of the onboard ports (in red) try each of the ones in blue.

Hope that helps.

UPDATE: Also if it's the red ones that work you'll need to change some config values in your BIOS settings to make the ports circled in blue the default (so your computer actually uses that graphics card). If you need help with that let me know.

Yes, you can use HDMI if your monitor supports it. Your GPU (a Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X 2GB WINDFORCE) supports supports DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI, so any of those would be acceptable. A DVI to VGA adapter would also work, but it would be less than optimal.

Am using an adaptor atm, but I'll see about grabbing a new monitor in the next few days/week. The current graphics card seems to support up to 1600x1200 resolution, seeing as it set a game to said thing - also rendering ti unplayable on my monitor till i changed it back, incidentally - so obtaining new screen stuff seems a good idea.

Is a HDMI port better than VGA or DVI? What differences to the various options have?

An R9 270X can support better than 1600x1200. I'd suggest a 1920x1080 screen. (1920x1200 would be fine too, but monitors with that resolution are less common.)

DisplayPort, DVI, and HDMI are all fine at this level, and all three are better than VGA.

I see, I see. How are the other types better than VGA? Display stuff quicker? Use less power?

Any brands I should avoid when looking at monitors?

DisplayPort/DVI-D/HDMI are all digital formats and practically indistinguishable in normal use (i.e. a single monitor of resolution up to 1080p running at 60Hz). VGA, however, is analogue, and more prone to signal degradation.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any major brands I'd actively avoid, though I do prefer Dell UltraSharp displays (a bit pricey, however).

I'd suggest getting an IPS display (better color and viewing angles compared to common TN displays).

I'm having an issue with the tabs function, specifically when nesting it.

What happens is that when you click on a tab in the sub-window, the main window also switches tabs; that is, if you click the first tab in the sub-window, the main window will also spontaneously switch to the first tab so that you have to go back to the right place in order to see the bit you were actually trying to look at.

It's happening in this post, but I took the opportunity to check how it worked out of the fieldset boxes when somebody asked me a question, so I know it's not those. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Is it just me?

This is also happening to me. I'm guessing it's a javascript bug in that forum plugin.

Update: The js is minified so I can't really debug it :(

I'm having some major confusion with Crunchyroll. I just signed up for a free premium trial on my PC, have a profile put together and everything...but on my Xbox One, there's no option to log in on the Crunchyroll App, only to sign up for a free trial. Does that mean that the free trial profile created on my PC doesn't extend to my Xbox One? And If I do set up a free trial from my Xbox One, will it not extend to my PC and other devices? I'm seriously worried that I've made a mistake by signing up on my PC, but the profile doesn't seem fully finished yet, so I may be able to back out.

No, it should be the same account. Looking at this video:

I see a "Log In" button in the lower right corner of the main screen.

On my Xbox One Crunchyroll menu it has no "Log In" button on the menu, just My Queue, Anime, Drama, and Try Premium.
Have you or someone else logged into the app before? "My Queue" suggests to me that there may already an account logged in, though I could be wrong. I'm not familiar with Xbox apps, but does the Crunchyroll app have some sort of settings page?

The only thing I can think of is that my Xbox Live account is somehow linking with Crunchyroll, but it won't let me log onto their actual website with my Xbox Live credentials, and it literally won't let me access the app on Xbox One without logging into Xbox Live. I have no idea what to do, and I've already signed up for the free trial on my PC.

We need somebody experienced with the Crunchyroll Xbox app, then. All I can say is that Crunchyroll accounts are definitely supposed to be cross-device.

I'm gonna try uninstalling Crunchyroll from my Xbox then re-installing it, see if that gives an option to connect accounts.

EDIT: Okay, that didn't work, but I just found out you can get to settings my hitting menu button on the Xbox, and there's an option to log out, so I think I may have solved it.

EDIT2: Success! I'm now logged into Xbox One on the profile I registered on my PC, though that still leaves the question of what I was logged into on Xbox One before, since I'm pretty sure I've never set up a Crunchyroll account before today.

Recently my laptop has been crashing a whole lot. It's underside gets hot a lot so I'm using a fan to cool it off and browsing in a cool environment but somehow when I try to play some games, the thing somehow gets hot too fast and abruptly crashes, shutting the entire thing down. this also happens when my laptop isn't hot. It just suddenly dies.

And in the past few days I've noticed that it's become a whole lot slower. Like every time I clicked on something or went into another tab, the browser won't respond and when i tried to ctrl+alt+delete to open my task manager to kill some browsers, it doesn't open the menu.

I've tried clearing caches and deleting useless files and applications but my laptop refuses to go any faster as it did before.

My laptop's about three years old now and I'm using Windows 7 ultimate.

@AnonymousRabbit: It's possibly because your internal cooling fans are clogged with dust. Do you have access to compressed air or able to open up the laptop to access the internals?
