SV's Pick of the Month User Submissions Thread

I'd like to recommend Legacy Super-Zero Quest, by @Lapin Lune.

Legacy Super-Zero Quest Original - Superhero

Many a superhero has handed their powers down to another to carry on their legacy, to keep up the good fight and honour their good name in a brand new age! Now it is your turn to inherit such a legacy! Just... not a very dignified one that is.

A quest about a young woman moving to a big super city floating in the sky and also maybe inheriting the mantle of a lame superzero that settled in her town, Legacy Super-Zero is a really neat superhero quest that could really use the signal boost.

for User Fiction, I would suggest Beauty and the Beast, a what-if scenario written by @Alex exploring the myriad plots surrounding an Ikari Shinji raised by one Mari Illustrious Makinami. Definitely in need of more public attention if you ask me- its an underappreciated instant classic that I rank up there with its far more famous predecessor, Advice and Trust. Still maintains that proper Evangelion flavor.

Beauty and the Beast [NGE]

Well, this has been a long time coming. After much time brainstorming this fic and planning out...
Under Questing, I would repeat my submission of Never Full, set in @Wicked Sanguine 's original setting, following a young super-soldier-of-fortune on her quest to learn more about the fascinating world outside her home city, and maybe earn her next enhancement while she's at it.

Never Full: A Tale of Adventure, Curiosity and Hunger Without Ending [Original Quest] Original - Mature - Horror

You are Thrice-Pierced Chalice of Eternal Regard, or "Grail" for short. Raised to the life of a Vesakh, the peerless hunters, mercenaries and soldiers of fortunes known the world over for their hunger and violence in the monstrous city of Vespergren, you now travel the world for the first time...

Hybrid Hive: Eat Shard? (Worm/MGLN) (Complete) Crossover

A damaged Unison Device is accidentally struck while Taylor is in the locker, causing it to land on her. Not able to determine what was happening, it interrupts the trigger event and sets Taylor down a different path.

Long-running, entertaining and with character driven story, but enough plot to be more than satisfactory.

Very clearly, Karen has brought the dystopia and grim reality of a Nazi hegemony to a crescendo of great writing and consistent updates. No bullshit stats or systems, Karen's TNO game is both fun, riveting and sobering, giving the AU justice. This game allows players participating in it to not be locked down by the arbitrary restructions of a mod and truly break free from their usual styles, without tedious and spam-like communication in the IC thread, which takes away the true spotlight of roleplaying your dyspotic nation. Next to that, Karen is one of the few to fully integrate his games to Discord and the pros and cons it brings (like instant messages and easier player IC communication), something many games lack, sticking to beating rocks together and chatting in the forum, overlaying it with spam.

I'd like to recommend Attempting to fulfil the plan VSNKh Edition by Blackstar
VSNKh is a new quest that nevertheless seeks to simulate how the Soviet state industrialized through the Five Year Plans and the challenges and dilemmas that came along with it. It is a new quest that would certainly benefit from more attention and debate while it takes a rather more laser focus on the Soviet economy it still tackles with the real issues and problems that exist within the Soviet state.

A Harry Potter Quest: He who was not

Some of you may know me from my other Quest (Rien ne va plus – A Marvel based quest you should...

A Harry Potter Quest, following a on original character the playerbase decided on in the early Story, by Tabula Rasa

The focus of this quest is the pure mystery of the magic world, as the MC is the most curious character I've seen in a long time. Hogwarts has turned into a truly magical place, guided by the QM and we have many avenues to explore and to develop our main character.

As the quality of the quest only gets better with more involved players and better discussion, I wanted to put it up here for you to check out.

Honestly, I'm a follower of both of Rasa's Quests. His other Marvel quest is just as enjoyable, but I've not been too active in discussions. So if you guys want to add something being some of the more involved players, gladly do.

If you didn't see the announcement, we're also looking for spooky Halloween recommendations! Have a horror story, or a Quest about monsters doing monster things? Then toss it here!

E: Note, while I said spooky, a story about monsters just being people, or 'date a vampire Quest' or whatever else would qualify as well.

You want spooky, you want @BirdBodhisattva 's Equestrian Cultist Experience. In which a pony by the name of Velvet Covers begins to dive into the Deep Magics, and it begins to warp her and the world around her. One of the latest updates has a fucking amazing dream/nightmare sequence that really nails the horror angle

Esquestria: The House of the Sun - A pony cultist experience Crossover - Mature - Users' Choice!

You are part of a cult. In Equestria. What started out as a very interesting book club meeting finally crossed "that" threshold when you realized the ceremonial knife on the wall wasn't just ornamental. But by then, you had already started agreeing with their point of view. The only thing you DO...

I came into this thread just to nominate this one for the Spooky category, but I see I've been beaten to it.

in User Fiction, I'm gonna drop a rec for Always Somethin', a just-off-the-ground story by @Espernyan set in @Wicked Sanguine 's original universe.
Shadow Chasing Ghosts Through a Broken Reflection (Spirit for short) did not fit in with the people of Shallow Graves, which probably explains why shes hanging around the frontier town of Coolwater. Only one chapter up s far, but with promises of more on the way.

Always Somethin' Original - Mature - Fantasy

A canon companion to Wicked Sanguine's Never Full, Always Somethin' is a fantasy/western monster-of-the-week following the adventures of Spirit, a monster-hunting Locust, as she strives to protect the frontier town of Coolwater from the dangers of the Uncharted South. Yet more dangerous than the...

Bloody Tinkers I & II [Worm/Bloodborne Crackfic] (Complete) Crossover

Cross-posted from SpaceBattles. Foreword: The main thrust of this story is the unmitigated PR disaster that is a Hunter Taylor in the Wards. Why the Wards? Because Taylor is her own supplier and was high on Tinkermeth at the time. Yes, it's that kind of fic. Expect OOC for the sake of...

It's the goood crack that leaves you wanting more.
Abridged Alucard crossed with the eldritch horror of Bloodborne. Taylor is a Ward, not because anyone particularly wants her to be, but because they really, really, don't want to have to fight her. But being a Ward gets boring, so Taylor goes for walks.

In the theme of Spooktober, I would like to recommend Grass Tastes Very Good. It is a story about a goat. A perfectly normal goat. She has shaggy black fur and red eyes, and a few oozing tentacles, and her milk has strange effects on those who drink it. Like all goats, she loves eating grass. The story is primarily about her quest to find more grass and the people, animals, and Lovecraftian abominations she meets along the way.

Given the...lack of submissions during the month of November, so to say, let me try and make up for it. I just did a detailed work-up for it in another recommendation thread, but for the sake of giving a proper entry over here, in the theme of what's been endorsed for November...

Contact with the Enemy, by @The_Letter_K (NSFW)

What do you do, when your best friend wants to kill you in the name of love?

Lyle, caught in a confrontation between a lich and a gynoid for the sake of love, unable to return to the human world he knew, and unwilling(?) to become an immortal undead monster girl to satisfy their needs, throws himself into a perfectly dysfunctional polyamorous relationship, and pins all his hopes on a desperate plan to find a new home in the passionate, ever-chaotic world of monster girls!

I'm sure it'll all work out fine. (Please ignore the title.)

A story about love, lesbians, and l-identity(?) in the world of (yes, really) Monster Girl Encyclopedia. When all is said and done, can Lyle truly remain as he once was?

Contact with the Enemy (NSFW) [MGE] - LGBT Themes - Complete Mature - Romance

This is a completed story about learning life lessons, love, lesbians, and Lyle. But mostly, like all relationships, it's all about communication. It means a ton to me, and I hope you like it. The setting is Monster Girl Encyclopedia, which means a lot to me personally, as it taught me some...

I originally put this in the wrong thread because I am le smort

I want to suggest two projects for SV's Pick of The Month for next month. The first is @Blackstar's quest, Attempting to Fulfill the Plan VSNKh Edition, which is about the VSNKh attempting to fulfil the plan :V. They put in a ton of work, update regularly, and have managed to give brief glimpses of character in a quest that is fundamentally about making the Numbers Go Up.

The second project I want to recommend, and I'm not sure if it's already been suggested, is Reds! A Revolutionary Timeline. It's a detailed, well thought out timeline about an alternate universe where America becomes a Socialist state --among other things.

Contact with the Enemy, by @The_Letter_K (NSFW)
Aaaaaaaaah I was working on a submission for this but yours is nicer and more eloquent and also more timely

Contact is, without exaggeration, the best romance I've ever read.

Just, like, no contest.

Because it is so, so rare to find romantic fiction that is about - 100%, all the time, not as an incidental thing but as the core theme of the entire work -

that is about people trying, and sometimes failing, but trying all the same, to understand each other. Trying to communicate. Trying to bridge the gap, between perspectives, and cultures, between disparate souls.

There's kissing and handholding and sexytimes, and they aren't incidental or tacked on; they're important, they're crucial, but they're important and crucial because they're such a big part of this communication, because they're all tangled up in how these people need, and try, to see and be seen, know and be known, by one another.

It's a story about trying to understand people, even when it's hard sometimes.

I'm not sure what could be more romantic than that.

the Sufficient Velocity ISOT Map Game Supernatural

Welcome to the SV ISOT Map Game, hopefully the first in many iterations of the classic game format. (And to the mods: apologies if this belongs elsewhere.) The Map Game format is simple: this is, effectively a collaborative writing project. Each player uses their turn to add to the story of the...

SV ISOT Mapgame is our take on what was an old and really fun staple on Alternatehistory.com. In an ISOT mapgame, you teleport specific portions of the world from different parts of history (and sometimes even in different locations!) and see what happens, taking turns per person. So far, the ISOT has had a fantastic variety, and it's great to see the creativity with what people put in and how the different ISOTs interact.

Just a hair too late for the December picks, but:

@Chehrazad's 10k word essay in the controversial historical opinions thread, synthesising and summarizing a lot of recent developments in re-examining Spartan history and archaeological research, which clears up some misconceptions about Sparta and how it is characterised in modern political analogies, pop history and in older academic histories.

Would seem like a pretty good Alt-History pick for January, perhaps? Obviously we'll talk about it as it gets closer to time.

This essay is only 2,000 words long. Not 10,000. Good read, though; thank you for linking it.
