SV's Pick of the Month User Submissions Thread

Hello!

As many of you will be aware, SV is now running "Picks of the Month". We select great stories, quests, and other user-made content on SV which we think deserves recognition and might benefit from a wider audience, and give them a bit of a signal-boost so that everyone can have the chance to enjoy them. This is run by a small dedicated staff team, but we don't want it to be just us who gets to pick out great things on SV which deserve to be promoted. We want you to get involved!

So if there's a quest you really love which you think could benefit from a few more voters, a story you read which is a bit of a hidden gem, or some other kind of user-made thing which you can tell they put a lot of effort into, we'd like to know. Threads which achieved a bit more success are fine too, so long as they represent the best of SV, and have something great to offer an expanded audience. Please let us know about whatever wonderful things you've stumbled across in your journeys on SV.

The format for submissions is:
(Title) by (Author)
(Brief description)
(Link to the submission.)
Post them in the thread, and when it comes to selecting Picks of the Month for the following month, we'll give them a look!

Good luck, and happy hunting. Perhaps you will find the next hit quest or story on SV!

Doof Quest by Made in Heaven

In a world where all the Disney villains won, play as Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb as he rules (most) of the Tri-State Area with a (not-so) iron fist in this CK2 style adventure. So far the quest has been a blast, with the perfect mix of satisfying advancements, smart and fun references, wacky hijinks, and lots of customization and user submissions.

DoofQuest- a Disney Villains Victorious CK2-Style Quest Crossover

What are you going to do today?

(It's already gotten pretty popular, but started less than two weeks ago so I thought it would be a good fit for this as many of the people who might like it probably just haven't seen it yet.)

Chrono Trigger: Fusion by Bobalo18

Do you know Chrono Trigger? If so (even by a tiny amount), then I've got a quest to recommend.

This quest incorporates the overall plot with characters from other series (Such as Xenoblade, Fire emblem, Final fantasy and more) to create different events than the ones from the original Chrono Trigger; so you don't need to know how the original story to get the full experience.

Chrono Trigger but with some beloved characters

(This quest has at least 3 voters and I would like to see some input from other users in there)

Travelogue of the Stars Above by @Laplace

Laplace took an offhanded joke by me and transformed it into an original story about a 14th-century Muslim scholar being abducted by aliens and travelling around the galaxy. Drawing on the journeys of Ibn Battuta for inspiration and format, they've managed to write an engaging and unique bit of historical fiction that I think Sufficient Velocity could do well to see more of.

This being the records of Rigel ibn Amir, ibn Hassan, ibn Salib, in which he recounts his travels among the worlds above Mount Qaf.

Seconding this; I would have completely missed it if not for this thread.

Shaping Up by @PieceThruWar

Panacea gets injured, so Shaper decides to take the reins for a while. Her host really needed some more friends and theraputic conflict anyway. Shenanigans ensue.

Shaping Up

Shaper is a Monarch. As such, she is a much refined shard with the best taste of all her siblings. They might disagree, but they're simply wrong. Be it Art, Life Sciences, or Zoological pursuits, the Queen of biological systems is superior. Why then should she let a little thing like...

A Sword Without a Hilt: A Song of Ice and Fire/D&D 3.5 Crossover by DragonParadox.

About 9 years before canon, magic explodes back into the world at a much higher level than it did when Dany hatches her eggs. The quest follows Viserys as a Sorcerer, Daenerys and the friends they make in Braavos as they first protect the city from the resurgence of supernatural creatures, desperately trying to get a handle on all the Fey, Undead, Demons, Devils ect popping up everywhere. Then when Jon Arryn demands the Sealord banish them, the party takes over the Stepstones and starts building up, fights Illithid worshiping Ironborn, Demon cabals, a lot more to mention here, taking over all of western Essos by now and preparing to conquer Westeros while facing down a half-dozen apocalypses in the future.

A Sword Without a Hilt: A Song of Ice and Fire/D&D 3.5 Crossover In a world where magic has all but guttered to ashes, becoming the fare of charlatans, petty conjurers, and ragged illusionists, a mighty change is stirring. From small and fragile sparks a great blaze will be reborn and men will...

Would like to rec Yawning Abyss, Soaring Shrike [Exalted], an Exalted quest on SV run by @VagueZ. Also its prequel, [Exalted] The Dragon Blood, Never Born Fantasy, which is complete.
I read them without knowing much about the setting and they're still quite readable and follow-able, there are no mechanics to weigh in the votes if you care not to, and the character-writing is solid. A very good read that - critically for the purpose of this picks thread - does not get much attention or voters.

Successor by @DeAnno

After Buffy Summers kills the mayor of Sunnydale someone has to run the town, and the place is used to being led by a powerful supernatural figure so it might as well be her. Now the voters are dealing with politics and elections and local economies on top of the canon season 4 plot.

Successor (BTVS) Mature

The Mayor's dead. Long live the Mayor. Buffy finds herself dragooned into Wilkins' old job in the chaos following Graduation Day, but will she and the rest of the Scoobies be able to keep Sunnydale in one piece? How about preventing the end of the world, again? And most importantly, can they...

Semper Ad Meliora by SlayerAnderson

A CK2 quest in an AU version of the Code Geass world/universe. It has crossover elements, most prominently psionics for piety characters.

For the story Lelouch stayed in Britannia, because there was never an assassination and no war with Japan. The world is far more fleshed out and given more depth. Lelouch has already gathered a nice group of likable characters around his banner and has had more than one Lelouch moment. I don't want to spoil too much of the story, just some things are apparently meant to be ^^.

There is intrigue, battles and feelings. And of course, moment of pure undiluted awesomness. It's Code Geass.

Dynasty of Dynamic Alcoholisim by torroar

A CK 2 style quest in the Warhammer Fantasy setting it is one of the longest running quests on the site and has only improved with time. Players take the role of the count of the imperial province of Ostland, a province known for its poverty and perpetually drunk population. It is al,ost startaling to se the difference between where the character and the province stated and where they are now over the course of the quest.

It also has some of the best character writing, vivid language and best battle scenes that have ever graced the site. It's a looooong read, but well worth it for those willing to give it a shot.

Also a major event just concluded, with the latest update totaling 75 THOUSAND WORDS. It is fortunately split into smaller chunks. But this quest may now hold the site record for single longest update in a quest.

Never Full, a quest by Wicked Sanguine

Never Full: A Tale of Adventure, Curiosity and Hunger Without Ending [Original Quest] Original - Mature - Horror

You are Thrice-Pierced Chalice of Eternal Regard, or "Grail" for short. Raised to the life of a Vesakh, the peerless hunters, mercenaries and soldiers of fortunes known the world over for their hunger and violence in the monstrous city of Vespergren, you now travel the world for the first time...

A narrative quest following Thrice-Pierced Chalice of Eternal Regard (Grail for short), a young sellsword trying to make her way in the world, fighting, dealing, and possibly eating those who get in her way. The original universe is amazingly well crafted, and I for one am entirely eager to learn more about the Locusts and the world they live in.

Jedi Padawan Quest by @The Laurent

A quest about a young Padawan during the last days of the Republic, well written while also featuring serious issues like what it means to be a child, war and other societal issues. I admit left after the end of the first "book" but it is certainly a great quest deserving of more attention and players.

Taylor Has a Strange Hobby by @BlueNine.

An inprogress fic where being Taylor is suffering, and that's just the way she likes it. Hilarious semi-romantic comedy. Not a crack fic. It's amazing and my description doesn't do it justice. Go read it and see how good it is.

I'm really loving the nominations here (and you may be seeing another one rather soon), and please keep them coming.

Just as a general note, I would give a teensy reminder that predominantly, the Picks of the Month are for projects which could benefit from a signal boost. Threads with a sizeable following already aren't prohibited, since who can define that anyway, but it is less of a focus, unless there is something really exceptional or we think it can get even bigger.

I always knew my love of indie hipster bullshit would be recognized one day. :p

So I was talking to the QM of Doofquest earlier on another discord, and apparently they weren't notified by staff that they had been selected for Submission of the Month. Could I ask why that was the case? It seems strange that it would be like that.

Off the heels of a very impressive historical GSRP last month, we have an original Sci-Fi post-apocalyptic setting with a heavy amount of detail put into the mechanics and setup from @MJ12 Commando. Although the game has not started yet it seems like it's really interesting with considerable effort put into it. It looks to be a return to a much older style of game originally started on Spacebattles - the story debate of Nexus fame, though by no means of similar format. We can only hope it succeeds - maybe it would be good to keep an eye on it and see how it progresses over a month or two.

Yeah, the way we've been running things now is that the Banner announcements go out when they're ready, and then we post them in the thread shortly afterwards. So yes, it's quite possible @Made in Heaven would have only seen it second hand. In future, we're going to try and have the thread updated before the banners go live, so people will definitely be pinged. Obviously though, timezones are a thing, so it's still possible that someone will be asleep whilst they're getting made Pick of the Month, and wake up to people congratulating them on a Discord.

Ace Combat 7 Review by @NonSequtur

Nonsequtur posted a really insightful review of Ace Combat 7 from the perspective of a series newcomer that becomes something of a deep, holistic reading of this long lived series' running narrative themes in the "Myths of Ace Combat" section. I think it's worth the consideration of the Content Promotion team for boosting.

I blame @100thlurker for this. The madman went and bought me a copy of this game based off one comment about how cool I found the idea of the aged, invincible pilot and in doing so kicked me down a rabbit hole. I'm playing the PS2 games now, you bastard. Anyway, now that I've logged 75 hours...
