For generations, the twin cities of dawn and dusk have stood on either side of the sunlit river. Dawn City has been a place of prosperity and wealth while Dusk City has been a dark place, where the less fortunate strike out a living.

Now a new era is coming to two cities and the rest of the world even if they don't know it yet. Vigilantes with gimmicks and code-names on both the side of angels and against have begun to arise and it is only a matter of time before those with power beyond what is natural begin to appear.

Yet this new age hasn't quite arrived yet. Superpowers have yet to manifest and the world is still the remit of mere men and women like yourself.

You have been born just in time to reach adulthood as the new era arrives. In your final year of high school, you still have a few months before you graduate and enter the real world as people like to say.

In what may be fortunate or unfortunate for the world, you are no ordinary person. Your mind is a genius one and your intellect exceeds ordinary constraints. You may have no fancy powers, but inventing your own equivalent is very much on the table.

Not that you are interested in the brawls and fist fights that vigilantes like. Your desires are more ambitious than being a glorified thug. You won't be the lackey on the street, no, you will be the mastermind pulling the strings.

Your name is:
[] Leon Goodman
[] Leona Goodman

What is your starting specialty?
[] Engineering. Your speciality is the art of engineering. You forge new inventions from existing materials, pushing the limits of modern engineering with hand-made devices of your own design.
[] Biology. Your speciality is the nature of life, specifically living creatures like plants, animals or even your fellow humans. You are pushing the boundaries of understanding genetics and the human body itself.
[] Chemistry. Your speciality is the mastery of chemistry. You know how to manipulate the periodic table and control the true elements of the world, inventing new materials and medicines.

What is your motive?
[] Power. You desire power, whether it be personal prowess, government subversion or financial riches.
[] Success. You seek success, wanting to achieve a future full of triumph and accomplishment.
[] Rule. You want to rule, wishing to be the person in charge and calling the shots without having to answer to others.

No planning voting for this vote.

***

This is going to be a supervillain quest where you play as the mastermind type of villain like Lex Luthor, Kingpin or David Xanatos. That isn't to say that the protagonist won't be doing stuff in person, but the primary focus of the quest will be building up the protagonist's criminal empire. Fighting superheroes will just be the cost of doing business rather than the main goal.

Anyway, I'm splitting character creation into two parts. The first is picking the gender of the character, their motive and their starting speciality. Gender and motive can't be changed later, but it will be possible to learn the specialties not picked now later in the quest.

The next update will be if your character starts out in Dawn City (nice place to live) or Dusk City (not so nice place to live), some starting bonuses and whether or not your character will be going to uni or entering the workforce.

Finally, this is the start of the superhero era with your protagonist being a first generation supervillain. No one is active with super powers yet, but expect proper superheroes and supervillains to begin appearing within a year or two of the quest starting.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Character Creation II
[X] Leona Goodman
[X] Engineering. Your speciality is the art of engineering. You forge new inventions from existing materials, pushing the limits of modern engineering with hand-made devices of your own design.
[X] Rule. You want to rule, wishing to be the person in charge and calling the shots without having to answer to others.

You are Leona Goodman, aspiring engineer and future ruler of the world. Well, that second of those is a bit ambitious even for you, but you have had it with the mess that others have been making. What good is democracy when the system is rigged for the rich and powerful? What place does the American Dream have when capitalism only exploits the hard work of the poor to enrich the already wealthy even further? What good are the so-called communists and socialist when they fail to accomplish anything and their only foreign successes are tyrannical and oppressive dictatorships?

With your genius, you could do a much better job than anyone else. You wouldn't need to suffer the whims of the petty masses or prey upon the poor, you could make the world a better place. You just need to become the person in charge and eliminate anyone who gets your way.

Of course, you should start with your home city.

Which side of the Sunlight River did Leona grow up in?
[] Dawn City. You live in Dawn City on the eastern side of the Sunlight River, where folks tend to be wealthier and more secure.
[] Dusk City. You live in Dusk City on the western side of the Sunlight River, where folks tend to be poorer and more desperate.

And then you need to figure out what you'll be doing after high school. You still have a few months before graduation, but after that, you'll have finished your secondary education. Thanks to your genius, you have a full ride scholarship to Dawn City University lined up for you if you want to take it.

Alternatively, you could just skip tertiary education and go straight to getting the job. You're smart enough to skip going to uni and it isn't like your long term plans will require a degree to accomplish. Why spend time learning when that time could be spent making some cash to help carry out your ambitions.

That said, you'll need to make a decision sooner than later. The scholarship offer won't be extended forever and you'll need to sign up for your classes. And you being you, you like to have your ducks in order ahead of time.

What will Leona do after graduating high school?
[] College. You decide to further your education by attending Dawn City University.
-[] Law.
-[] Business.
-[] Medical.
-[] Politics.
-[] Sciences.
[] Employment. You decide to make some income by entering the workforce full-time.
Of course, your genius isn't the only asset that you have at your disposal. You have a few other cards in your hand so to say.

Pick three starting bonuses.
[] Wealth. Thanks to a dead relative, you have been fortunate enough to inherit a large sum of money.
[] Minions. You have loyal and reliable thugs on your payroll even if they aren't the most capable.
[] Agent. You have a loyal and competent follower at your side, who can carry about actions in your absence.
[] Supercomputer. You have built yourself a basic supercomputer to aid you in your endeavours.
[] Business. You already run a small, but thriving business.
[] Reputation. You have built a solid reputation of being helpful and reliable.

Given the potential synergies between the votes, I'm going to make this a plan vote.

***

Alright, this is the second half of character creation. You get to pick if Leona grew up well off in Dawn City or if she grew up poor in Dusk City. You also get to choose what she'll be doing after the first couple of turns as she will need to either manage her college life or she'll need to worry about her day job.

As for the bonuses, none of them are unique and they are all things that can be acquired later in the quest. They also have some synergies such as picking both Business and Employment would result in Leona working at the business she owns.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Q1 2010
[X] Plan: Medical implants and more
-[X] Dusk City. You live in Dusk City on the western side of the Sunlight River, where folks tend to be poorer and more desperate.
-[X] College. You decide to further your education by attending Dawn City University.
--[X] Medical.
-[X] Agent. You have a loyal and competent follower at your side, who can carry about actions in your absence.
-[X] Business. You already run a small, but thriving business.
-[X] Reputation. You have built a solid reputation of being helpful and reliable.

"So university," says Nasira as your best friend and loyal follower sits on the edge of the table in your workshop, "You got me in? I mean, I know I got in, but you had to be behind it, Leona. Right?"

"You have good enough grades," you reply, not glancing up from the computer you are currently working on, "I just convinced their admissions department that you were perfect for their diversity agenda. Which you are by the way between being a minority thrice over so once they were aware of you, there was no chance of them turning you down."

"So you hacked them," concludes Nasira.

"Only a little," you protest, "I just put your name on the list of most desirable candidates and nobody took you off it."

"Do you think we'll be roommates?" inquires Nasira as she lets the previous matter drop.

"We can ask for it," you reply, "No guarantee that they'll say yes."

"Unless you hack them again," says Nasira.

"Unless I hack them again," you again before pausing, "Speaking of which, don't trust their systems to be secure. Because they are not."

"I don't think any electronic system is secure against you," points out Nasira.

"Maybe?" you hedge as you think it over, "I am one of the smartest people alive if not the smartest, but I haven't tried my hand against some of the military or big government systems. I don't want to become a felon if things do go wrong."

"Fair enough," says Nasira with a nod of her head, "No point throwing everything away to prove something out of pride."

"Exactly," you reply.

For a girl from Dusk City who went into a system at an early age, things are going well for you. You got top grades at school, avoided being too badly traumatised by the foster care and starting your own business repairing electronics and mechanical equipment. Now you are going into university with a scholarship thanks to being the smartest person in the city.

Strictly speaking, you don't need that scholarship as you could get by on profits from Goodman Workshop. But that would mean not having those funds available for other things and you know that will hurt your ambitions. After all, money is what makes the world go around and you aren't in a position to change that yet.

But one day, you will change the world and everyone will know your chosen code-name.

Actions

2 Free Actions.
1 Financial Action.
1 Research Action.
1 Funds available.
Nasira Yusuf can be assigned to an action to provide a bonus to it or can be used independently as an extra action.

Financial

[] Apply for a research grant.
One potential avenue for additional funding would be applying for a research grant. With your genius, you are practically assured to get one. The extra cash will certainly be useful, but you will need to come up with something worthy of the grant that you'll have to share with others.
DC: 20. Cost: Free. Effect: Gain one-time infusion of Funds, obligation to develop a new technology that must be shared with others.
[] Expand Goodman Workshop
At the moment, Goodman Workshop is limited to a single location with only you and Nasira right now. Employing some more staff would allow you to take on more work, which would make more paying customers and therefore more income for your endeavours.
Progress: 0/100. Costs: 0.5 Funds. Effects: +1 Profits to Goodman Workshop.
[] Work at Goodman Workshop
You could put in some extra hours at your business to get more customer work done. Finishing off these projects will allow you to take on more, which in turn means more money in your bank account.
DC: 0/25/50/75/100. Costs: Free. Effect: Gain 0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5 Funds.

Public Relations

[] Do volunteer work.
Doing volunteer work is always a good way to improve one's reputation. Lending your time around town won't directly bring you profit, but it would make you look good and earn some gratitude from those you help.
DC: 20. Costs: Free. Effect: Improves your reputation.
[] Advertise Goodman Workshop
Between your work and reputation, you draw in steady work, but all businesses need to advertise their services. You could put some extra efforts and funds to advertising your business, which should make you some extra spending cash and at the very least you should break even.
DC: 25/50/75/100. Costs: Free. Effect: Gain 0.25/0.75/1.25/1.75 Funds.

Research

[] Invent a jetpack.
Your power armour is good, but right now, it is entirely ground-based. Developing a jetpack as a method of flight would both let you take to the skies and increase your mobility. And of course, the coolness of having a jetpack is always appealing.
DC: 40. Cost: Free. Effect:
[] Develop improved armour plating.
Your power armour has some basic protection to it, but you know that you can do better. Experiment with different alloys and compounds to come up with superior armour plating for your suits.
DC: 25.Cost: Free. Effect:
[] Invent a strength booster.
Your exoskeleton is decent as it allows for the wearer to have greater strength and stamina, but it doesn't exceed human limits. If you really want your power armour to shine, you'll need to figure out how to grant super-strength to your power armour.
DC: 30. Cost: Free. Effect:
[] Invent a laser weapon.
Who doesn't want a laser? Not you because your power armour lacks a ranged weapon and regular guns are so gauche. Whether it is handheld or integrated into your armour, you'll have a use for a laser weapon.
DC: 40. Cost: Free. Effect:
[] Invent a sonic weapon.
On the flipside, owning a sonic-based weapon sounds cool and a good deal less lethal than a laser. Coming up with a sonic weapon would be another way to add ranged firepower to your armour.
DC: 40. Cost: Free. Effect:
[] Work on nuclear fusion.
Nuclear fusion is the jackpot of science in your personal opinion and you are going to be the one to figure it out. You'll have a long and expensive road ahead of you, but you won't let that stop you from achieving your dream.
Progress: 0/1000. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Figure out a working method of harnessing nuclear fusion.

Manufacture

[] Build PA Mk I.
You have designed a relatively basic power armour design, you have yet to build it. While you can easily build it in your workshop, doing so would be an expensive and time consuming endeavour if one that is very much worth it.
Progress: 0/100. Cost: 1 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 PA Mk I.
[] Vigilante Outfits
Costumes and code-names seem to be all the rage these days with no sign of fading in popularity. If anything, it is the opposite as it becomes more normal by the day. Putting together some decent costumes for you and Nasira is going to be quicker, easier and cheaper than building in one power armour.
Progress: 0/40. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Supervillain costumes for you and Nasira.

Crime

[] Investigate the criminals of Dusk City.
Dusk City has plenty of criminals thanks to being a seedy place even if things aren't as bad as some people on the other side of the river suggest. At least you think that is the case. Anyhow, you will be operating in Dusk City so getting the lay of the land will be important to your future endeavours.
Progress: 0/50. Cost: Free. Effect: Basic profiles on the major criminal organisations of Dusk City.
[] Investigate the criminals of Dawn City.
While Dawn City tries to play up how nice and safe it is, it isn't free of crime even if the syndicates over there tend to be less brutish. While you are only going to university over there at the moment, you may want to get the lay of the land if your operations expand to the other side of the river.
Progress: 0/50. Cost: Free. Effect: Basic profiles on the major criminal organisations of Dawn City.
[] Look for potential targets.
While you don't plan to become a criminal any time soon, you do know that less than legal methods could be a useful source of additional funding and other resources. Looking for ideal victims ahead of time will be useful for when you are ready.
DC: 10/30/50/70/90. Cost: Free. Effect: Identify possible targets to rob.

Super

[] Investigate local costumed vigilantes.
Between Dawn City and Dusk City, there are a handful of individuals running about with fancy costumes and codenames. While you don't expect to be dealing with them any time soon, knowledge of possible opposition and potential assets.
Progress: 0/50. Costs: Free. Effect: Basic profiles on the superheroes & supervillains of Dawn City and Dusk City.

So this took longer than I was expecting. Normally I would do some of the initial actions as part of the pre-quest prep, but the nature of character creation meant I couldn't do all of it this time around. Anyway, I got the basic layout for the quest sorted though it will be a mixture of mechanics and narrative as I don't feel like doing a mechanics-heavy quest.

Anyway, I feel the mechanics should be self-explanatory. Actions are actions, you can't spend more funds than you have and you need to either pass the DC of an action or complete its progress bar.

Also, I forgot that I hadn't covered Leona's family until making this update so I decided to make her a foster system kid so her biological family may or may not make an appearance later in the quest.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Q1 2010 Results
School continues to go well with you continuing to stay at the top of the class while Nasira keeps up her good grades with some tutoring from you. Teachers are a little more supportive of the two of you knowing that you have scholarships. Can't upset the future stars now they are important, never mind spending the last three and half years looking down upon the foster kid and the Muslim lesbian.

Okay, you have it a lot better than Nasira, but life hasn't been kind to you. That's something you'll change once you're calling the shots. You aren't arrogant enough to think that you could eradicate bigotry and bullying, but you will do more than the half-arsed efforts currently in place.

[-] Apply for a research grant.
One potential avenue for additional funding would be applying for a research grant. With your genius, you are practically assured to get one. The extra cash will certainly be useful, but you will need to come up with something worthy of the grant that you'll have to share with others.

Applying for a grant is easier, actually getting a decent one turns out to be harder than you expected. All of the good ones have already been handed out, leaving only the lesser long-shot ones. For example, any grants by the military or federal government were snatched up before you could get to them and you have to rely on stringy corporations and universities that are trying to save on expenses.

Still, there are a handful worth looking at even if only one of them is in your speciality. Peachco Limited is offering a cheap research grant in exchange for a new hair dye whose patent is to be owned by the business and not the researcher under the terms of the research grant. Lord Incorporated is offering multiple versions of the same inexpensive research grant to receive independent analysis of social media, a phenomenon that is currently on the rise.

Meanwhile Dawn City University is offering the smallest of the grants, but is the only one that actually wants something which falls under your speciality. Which to say that they want a way to more efficiently extend their wi-fi signal across the campus.

Choose one research grant to apply for.
[] Hair Dye Corporate Grant. Gain 2 Funds in exchange for developing a new hair dye.
[] Social Media Corporate Grant. Gain 1 Funds in exchange for doing social media analysis.
[] Wi-Fi Signal Booster University Grant. Gain 0.75 Funds in exchange for identifying a more efficient way to extend wi-fi across the campus.
[] None. You don't consider the money being offered to be worth your time.

[-] Expand Goodman Workshop
At the moment, Goodman Workshop is limited to a single location with only you and Nasira right now. Employing some more staff would allow you to take on more work, which would make more paying customers and therefore more income for your endeavours.
Progress: 0/100. Costs: 0.5 Funds. Effects: +1 Profits to Goodman Workshop.
Rolled: 96/100

You make excellent progress when it comes to expanding your business. You clear out some of the space in the building to make room for additional workstations and set up both a breakroom and an office. You and Nasira even bring in a few lockers for your future employees to put their stuff in. Speaking of said employees, you do some minor outreach and you get swamped by prospective hires who want to sign up with a likeable rising star.

By the time that April is rolling around the corner, you have everything set up in the building and your new employees have signed their contracts. You just need to finish handling some of the paperwork and blam, Goodman Workshop will go from a one-woman operation to a five-person operation.

This action will auto-complete next turn.

[-] Invent a sonic weapon.
On the flipside, owning a sonic-based weapon sounds cool and a good deal less lethal than a laser. Coming up with a sonic weapon would be another way to add ranged firepower to your armour.
DC: 40. Cost: Free. Effect:
Rolled: 68

Coming up with a sonic weapon turns out to be as easy as it is said. Or maybe not. You mangled that phrase and the variant of it that you tried to use hasn't quite come out right. In any case, you have successfully made a sonic weapon design, currently taking the form of a handheld pistol or as you prefer to call it, the sonic blaster.

It is meant to be a non-lethal weapon at heart. A focused blast will knock a man off his feet, but a wide blast will only stun its victims at best. Of course, you will need to build a sonic blaster to use. That or work a sonic blaster or two into your power armour design. You do like the idea of having wrist-mounted sonic blasters.

[-] Vigilante Outfits
Costumes and code-names seem to be all the rage these days with no sign of fading in popularity. If anything, it is the opposite as it becomes more normal by the day. Putting together some decent costumes for you and Nasira is going to be quicker, easier and cheaper than building in one power armour.
Progress: 0/40. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Supervillain costumes for you and Nasira.
Rolled: 75

No longer are the two of you just Leona Goodman and Nasira Yusuf, you are now Mastermind and White Dragon. Mastermind was an obvious choice for you, but Nasira's choice was less thematic. It seemed that she liked dragons and her favourite colour was white so she chose White Dragon.

In any case, the two of you have a pair of rugged outfits with boots, gloves and pockets. All of it is painted in your chosen colour schemes as while you could have left the clothing untouched, Nasira wants her in white. And since you were doing hers, you figured why not add some blue and black to your own outfit.

It will be sufficient for any illegal adventures, but if you are getting involved in those sorts of activities, you would much rather have an exoskeleton.

[-] Investigate the criminals of Dusk City.
Rolled: 70

As you already knew, Dusk City has an active underground. Beyond the usual petty street gangs, the place has a thriving organised crime scene with multiple organisations competing with each other. You got the usual mobs such as the cartel, the triad, the bratva and the mafia with the yakuza preferring to operate out of the Dawn City.

Then you got the not so usual groups. Froin what Nasira has found out, the Irish mob has recently had a change of leadership with a charismatic costumed criminal taking the reins. They haven't done much yet, but enigmatic Kisser is pushing a gaelic unity amongst the Irish mob as the newcomer asserts his dominance with brutal force.

Next you have the two big names. Well, sort of. The Golden Order doesn't actually operate in Dusk City with the Golden Knight and his immediate organisation sticking to the other side of the river. Yet at the same time, a good number of the street gangs in Dusk City owe allegiance to the chivalrous criminal in Dawn City. Whatever the Golden Knight wants with Dusk City, he is willing to get it via proxy.

Finally there is the Diamond Dominion led by Diamond Duke, the top dog of Dusk City's criminal organisations. Originally the German mob, the Diamond Duke twisted and warped it into his own personal fiefdom. While built around a loyal core of German followers, the Diamond Duke accepts those willing to serve him from all ranks of life. He also blurs the line between legal and illegal as the crime boss does what makes him money and secure his power.

As for who the Diamond Duke is, well, it is an open secret that the man is Erik Hafner. While charged, the man was never convicted and these days, the police refuse to touch him directly after being made fools of in the courtroom one time too many. These days, Erik Hafner is a respected socialite in Dawn City who rose above his humble origins in Dusk City. The sort of role model you could look up to if you were willing to cast aside any moral code and do whatever is most profitable for you.

Erik Hafner aka Diamond Duke is also someone you'll need to take out if you are ever going to have the rulership that you dream of.

First done is turn and boy did you have a lot of good rolls. Like you rolled above average every time. In the public rolls at least, you got terrible rolls on what grants are available this turn. Anyway, I don't have much else to say except we have a nice easy vote for this update.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Q2 2010
[X] Wi-Fi Signal Booster University Grant. Gain 0.75 Funds in exchange for identifying a more efficient way to extend wi-fi across the campus.

In the end, you accept the research grant from Dawn City University. The money will be useful and the task is certainly within your capabilities even if it has the potential to be quite time-consuming.

You also ought to build your power armour sooner than later, especially now you have a weapon for it. You aren't foolish enough to dip your toes into the criminal underworld when it is just you and Nasira. No, the two of you would be eaten alive by the established criminal elements without a hint of mercy.

You need something to level the playing field. Which could be power armour, but if you are honest with yourself, expanding your business could work. Money will help a lot and ideally, you would have the soft power of money and the hard power of power armour.

Maybe building a supercomputer could help? Having something to crunch lots of numbers could be useful to getting money.

So much to do, especially since you have graduation just around the corner. At least you don't need to worry about finding a date for prom since Nasira is more than happy to fill that role even if neither of you feels like romance right now.

Your exoskeleton is decent as it allows for the wearer to have greater strength and stamina, but it doesn't exceed human limits. If you really want your power armour to shine, you'll need to figure out how to grant super-strength to your power armour.
DC: 30. Cost: Free. Effect: Strength booster design.

[] Invent a laser weapon.
Who doesn't want a laser? Not you because your power armour lacks a ranged weapon and regular guns are so gauche. Whether it is handheld or integrated into your armour, you'll have a use for a laser weapon.
DC: 40. Cost: Free. Effect: Laser weapon designs.

[] Develop superior wi-fi for Dawn City University. (Must complete by the end of February 2011)
Dawn City University has given you a research grant in exchange for developing a more efficient method of extending wi-fi across their campus. It is something you can do with time though you probably have better things that you could be doing with your time.
Progress: 0/100. Cost: Free.

Manufacture

[] Build PA Mk II. (Repeatable)
You have designed a relatively basic power armour design, you have yet to build it. While you can easily build it in your workshop, doing so would be an expensive and time consuming endeavour if one that is very much worth it.
Progress: 0/100. Cost: 1 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 PA Mk II.

[] Build a sonic blaster. (Repeatable)
You have designed a handheld sonic blaster for non-lethal takedowns, now you just have to build one of them. Thankfully, the production process shouldn't take long or cost much.
Progress: 0/30. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 Sonic Blaster.

[] Build a supercomputer.
A supercomputer would definitely be useful to any expansion as you could do alot with something that crunches a ton of numbers in a timely manner. It wouldn't be that grand by supercomputer standards, but you could build a basic one in your workshop.
Progress: 0/200. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 Basic Supercomputer.

Crime

The second turn and a few new options in Financial, Research and Manufacture. By the way, Leona isn't going to go supervillain or start committing crimes until she has some power to get her out of a pickle. That could be a suit of power armour or becoming a major businesswoman, but one way or another, she wants some oomph in her corner.

Also, I think I might switch from three month turns to two months turn starting in the next update. This is because I feel that the passage of time is following too quickly. I don't want to get bogged down, but at the same time, I don't want the years to zoom by either.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Q2 2010 Results
[X] Plan: Fulfilling obligations and doing SCIENCE!
-[X] Start Designing Websites (Stage 1)
-[X] Develop superior wi-fi for Dawn City University. (Must complete by the end of February 2011)
-[X] Invent a jetpack.
-[X] Build a supercomputer.
-[X] Investigate local costumed vigilantes.
--[X] Nasira

Prom was interesting, taking Nasira as your date. If her parents hadn't already kicked her out when she turned eighteen, they certainly would have for taking another girl to prom as her date. As things are, the music was decent, you and Nasira did already considering neither of you know how to dance, the usual arseholes had other things on their minds than picking on us and you were able to make an exit at a reasonable time without too much hassle. All in all, an enjoyable night.

Graduation went well and while you didn't have any family to show up, you attended anyway as you were the Valedictorian thanks to graduating at the top of your class. Even if you didn't care much for your high school, there was no chance of you not showing up to receive rightful recognition of your academic achievements.

Now with high school over, you'll have a few months of free time to get things done.

[-] Expand Goodman Workshop (Autocompletes this turn)
At the moment, Goodman Workshop is limited to a single location with only you and Nasira right now. Employing some more staff would allow you to take on more work, which would make more paying customers and therefore more income for your endeavours.
Progress: Autocompletes this turn. Costs: 0.5 Funds. Effects: +1 Profits to Goodman Workshop.

With minimal effort on your part, the newly expanded Goodman Workshop is open for business. With extra hands helping out, the increased workload and corresponding increased profits easily offsets the increased expenses, leaving you with improved income at the end of the day.

[-] Start Designing Websites (Stage 1)
The internet is already big and only getting bigger. Offering to design websites for various individuals and businesses can't be harder than coding the software of a HUD and it could make you some easy cash.
Progress: 0/80. Costs: Free. Effects: +2 Funds.
Rolled: 21

When it comes to starting out in website design, finding a client turns out to be your biggest issue. As smart as you are, you don't have an education or any training website design so convincing people to take you proves to be a greater challenge than you originally anticipated.

In the end, you are able to find a couple of local businesses that are willing to take you on because they know you as a person. Now you just need to finish designing their websites and do so in a timely manner.

[-] Invent a jetpack.
Your power armour is good, but right now, it is entirely ground-based. Developing a jetpack as a method of flight would both let you take to the skies and increase your mobility. And of course, the coolness of having a jetpack is always appealing.
DC: 40. Cost: Free. Effect: Jetpack design.
Rolled: 40

Developing a jetpack design proves higher than you expected. Or perhaps you are just pressed for time and that makes the task feel more difficult than it actually is. Still, by the time that you have graduated, you have a pair of functioning jetpack designs. One that can be worn on its own and a second which is integrated into the latest version of your power armour.

Neither are as good as you would like as both are dependent on a fuel supply. Once that limited supply of fuel runs out, the jetpack will be non operational until refuelled. Alas that is just to be expected of a basic first design. Future designs might be more unlimited, but you will need to find a suitable power source for that sort of advancement to be viable.

[-] Develop superior wi-fi for Dawn City University. (Must complete by the end of Q1 2011)
Dawn City University has given you a research grant in exchange for developing a more efficient method of extending wi-fi across their campus. It is something you can do with time though you probably have better things that you could be doing with your time.
Progress: 0/100. Cost: Free. Effect:
Rolled: 49

As much as it might be useless to you personally, you are obligated to figure out a superior way to extend the campus wi-fi of Dawn City University. At least by doing this for the university, you might get some recognition when you start attending there in September. Though you aren't sure how showing off your engineering skills will help you out when you are going to be a medical student.

The research grant says that the university wants you to come up with something more efficient, but reading between the lines, you can tell that what they really want is something cheaper. You can't blame them for being penny pinchers given that the money makes the world go around. God knows that you yourself are rather stringent when it comes to not wasting your fiances.

Your initial work goes into understanding the current wi-fi set up of Dawn City University, figuring out where the current signal providing equipment is and the various signal strength across the campus from the blindspots to the places with the fastest connection.

Now you have everything mapped out, you just need to come up with a technical solution to the problem.

[-] Build a supercomputer.
Rolled 94

You make great progress on your supercomputer thanks to having great luck in being able to scavenge the various parts you need. When people throw out their old electronics and hardware for being broken, sometimes it is actually nonfunctional, but sometimes it just needs a bit of a fix up. Even if it is broken beyond usability, there are usually plenty of still usable components that can be salvaged for other usages.

The downside is that a supercomputer, even a basic one made out of second-hand parts, takes a lot of time and effort to build. Not to mention that you are doing this on your lonesome and you have no doubt the lack of extra hands is limiting just how much progress you can make.

Nethertheless, you are making progress and even if it is no supercomputer yet, you have a solid regular computer at your disposal. You just need to expand it into its full potential and while it will take time and effort, you have no doubt that it will be worth it in the end.

[-] Investigate local costumed vigilantes.
Rolled 79

As usual, Nasira pulls through for you and she does in a timely manner. According to her research, there are a few costumed vigilantes running about, both those inclined towards crime and those inclined towards heroics.

On the more villainous side so to say, there is the Golden Knight. Unlike with Erik Hafner where his moniker as the Diamond Duke is just a nickname, the leader of the Golden Order fully leans into it. Keeping his face and identity hidden, the man wears gold-colour plate armour and pretends to act like he is a real knight and the Dusk City gangs answering to him are his feudal subjects.

His top two enforcers are twin brothers calling themselves Warhound and Wardog. Former marines, they now used their warfighting skills to enforce the commands of the Golden Knight, wearing hound-inspired outfits in the process.

On the heroic side of the street fights, there are two caped crusaders. Liberty Lion operates in Dawn City and Nasira is convinced that the tough, muscular man is some kind of wrestler or boxer. Very good at being able to take a punch and dish one out, Liberty Lion supplements his street fighting skills with a few gadgets here and there. You would love to know more, but Nasira's intelligence gathering is limited.

Finally, there is the Crimson Condor, a vigilante who operates in Dusk City wearing red bird-themed spandex. He is something in the inverse of Liberty Lion as while Lion fights mainly with his fists and his gadgets are a backup, the Crimson Condor relies chiefly upon his arsenal of gadgets and only using his fists when needed. You can't help, but wonder what sort of intellect he has, but according to accounts that Nasira has compiled, his gadgets aren't all that impressive compared to yours and can all fit in his belt.

I was going to put a vote in here, but I could find a good spot to place one. So because of that, I'll just be posting this and start working on the next turn.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

July-August 2010
Summer is at hand. Hot weather, sunny skies and no school. Most people your age would be getting a part-time job, but you already run a full time business. At least you'll have more free time over the next couple of months as with school over and university yet to begin, you won't be spending time in a classroom.

***

"Leona, I want a suit of power armour," says Nasira one morning as she walks into the kitchen of your shared apartment as you are getting breakfast.

The two of you are in the apartment on the upper floor of the building that you are renting for Goodman Workshop. The bottom floor is your business and the top floor is your home. Well, you have to pay rent, but that's close enough.

"I'll get around it," you reply, but Nasira just shakes her head.

"No, I want it before you start sending me off after criminals," says your best friend, "Look, I'll follow you to the ends of the world, but we need something to equalise things. If I get caught or someone goes after me, I'll need that power armour. Martial arts and some self-defence training isn't going to cut it if a bunch of thugs come after me with guns."

"Alright, I'll get around to it sooner than later," you promise her.

Actions

3 Free Actions. (Warning the extra free action is for this turn only)
1 Financial Action.
1 Research Action.
4.25 Funds available.
Nasira Yusuf can be assigned to an action to provide a bonus to it or can be used independently as an extra action.

Financial

[] Apply for another research grant. (Repeatable)
One potential avenue for additional funding would be applying for a research grant. With your genius, you are practically assured to get one. The extra cash will certainly be useful, but you will need to come up with something worthy of the grant that you'll have to share with others. Hopefully you'll have better options this time around.
DC: 20. Cost: Free. Effect: Gain one-time infusion of Funds, obligation to develop a new technology that must be shared with others.

[] Expand Goodman Workshop Again
You have turned Goodman Workshop from a one-woman operation into a team business. Now it is time to take things a step further by turning Goodman Workshop into Goodman Workshops. Aka starting up a second location.
Progress: 0/120. Costs: 0.75 Funds. Effects: +1.5 Profits to Goodman Workshop.

[] Work at Goodman Workshop (Repeatable)
You could put in some extra hours at your business to get more customer work done. Finishing off these projects will allow you to take on more, which in turn means more money in your bank account.
DC: 0/25/50/75/100. Costs: Free. Effect: Gain 0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5 Funds.

[] Start Designing Websites (Stage 1)
The internet is already big and only getting bigger. Offering to design websites for various individuals and businesses can't be harder than coding the software of a HUD and it could make you some easy cash.
Progress: 21/80. Costs: Free. Effects: +2 Funds.

Public Relations

[] Do volunteer work. (Repeatable)
Doing volunteer work is always a good way to improve one's reputation. Lending your time around town won't directly bring you profit, but it would make you look good and earn some gratitude from those you help.
DC: 20. Costs: Free. Effect: Improves your reputation.

[] Advertise Goodman Workshop.
Between your work and reputation, you draw in steady work, but all businesses need to advertise their services. You could put some extra effort and funds into advertising your business, which should make you some extra spending cash and at the very least you should break even.
DC: 25/50/75/100. Costs: Free. Effect: Gain 0.25/0.75/1.25/1.75 Funds.

Research

[] Develop improved armour plating.
Your power armour has some basic protection to it, but you know that you can do better. Experiment with different alloys and compounds to come up with superior armour plating for your suits.
DC: 25.Cost: Free. Effect: Superior armour plating.

[] Invent a strength booster.
Your exoskeleton is decent as it allows for the wearer to have greater strength and stamina, but it doesn't exceed human limits. If you really want your power armour to shine, you'll need to figure out how to grant super-strength to your power armour.

(Must complete by the end of Q1 2011)
Dawn City University has given you a research grant in exchange for developing a more efficient method of extending wi-fi across their campus. It is something you can do with time though you probably have better things that you could be doing with your time.
Progress: 49/100. Cost: Free. Effect: Fulfil Research Grant.

Manufacture

[] Build PA Mk III. (Repeatable)
You have designed a relatively basic power armour design, you have yet to build it. While you can easily build it in your workshop, doing so would be an expensive and time consuming endeavour if one that is very much worth it.
Progress: 0/100. Cost: 1 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 PA Mk III.

[] Build a jetpack. (Repeatable)
You have designed a jetpack to fly about with, now you just have to build one of them. Thankfully, the production process shouldn't take long or cost much.
Progress: 0/35. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 Jetpack.

[] Build a supercomputer.
A supercomputer would definitely be useful to any expansion as you could do alot with something that crunches a ton of numbers in a timely manner. It wouldn't be that grand by supercomputer standards, but you could build a basic one in your workshop.
Progress: 94/200. Cost: 0.25 Funds. Effect: Gain 1 Basic Supercomputer.

Crime

[] Investigate the criminals of Dawn City.
While Dawn City tries to play up how nice and safe it is, it isn't free of crime even if the syndicates over there tend to be less brutish. While you are only going to university over there at the moment, you may want to get the lay of the land if your operations expand to the other side of the river.

And here is the next update. Anyway, the extra free action for this turn represents Leona not having to worry about being in the classroom over the summer so it will go away once she starts going to university.

Other than that, Nasira wants a suit of power armour if you want to keep sending her into the underworld.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

-[X] Develop superior wi-fi for Dawn City University.

-[X] Nasira: Expand Goodman Workshop Again

Summer was fun, at least compared to school. The beach over in Dawn City was packed full of people both times you went there and the sheer size of the crowd kept the trips from truly being fun. Competing for space in the sea just took away from the fun and that was the only reason you bothered to go to the beach. Sand is irritating and gets everywhere and sunbathing has never been fun for you.

Nevertheless, you do enjoy having some extra free time and you even let Nasira drag you to a few places. You paid for all the places of course as while you pay Nasira well as your employee, you are the one racking in the dough at the end of the day. And you certainly enjoyed spending your time with Nasira at all of the restaurants and museums.

But like all good things, the summer eventually comes to an end and university is just around the corner.

***

[-] Expand Goodman Workshop Again
You have turned Goodman Workshop from a one-woman operation into a team business. Now it is time to take things a step further by turning Goodman Workshop into Goodman Workshops. Aka starting up a second location.
Progress: 0/120. Costs: 0.75 Funds. Effects: +1.5 Profits to Goodman Workshop.
Rolled: 95

You leave Nasira in charge of setting up a second site for Goodman Workshop and your best friend proves why she is going to be a business student with a scholarship. Using your funds, she finds a second location to rent in one of Dusk City's safer spots and from there, she convinces a couple of people from your new team of workers to form the beginnings of a second time over there.

After that, she goes through your short-list of promising hires from the end of the school year and people who have just finished school for the year to fill out the gaps in both teams. Now if only she had finished the process, but she still needs to finish the interviews and handle the paperwork.

Of course, that means she'll be busy dealing with all of that over the next couple of months. Between that and university, she won't have time to deal with anything else for you. You could pull off to handle something else, but it would mean backsliding on the progress that she has made for you over the summer.

Does Leona let Nasira finish expanding Goodman Workshops?
[ ] Yes. Nasira is locked onto finishing Goodman Workshop next turn.
[ ] No. Lose 15 Progress on Expand Goodman Workshop Again.

[-] Start Designing Websites (Stage 1)
The internet is already big and only getting bigger. Offering to design websites for various individuals and businesses can't be harder than coding the software of a HUD and it could make you some easy cash.
Progress: 21/80. Costs: Free. Effects: +2 Funds.
Rolled: 61

After the difficulty finding some clients at the end of the school year, actually making the websites proves much easier. What you come up with is nothing fancy, just a couple of simple and functional websites. You set up some pleasing and thematic aesthetics of course because nobody likes a dull website, but you prioritise user-friendliness over fancy tricks. Especially since while you are being paid, you aren't being paid enough to go all out.

By the end of the summer, you have a pair of happy clients and the beginnings of a reputation as a website designer has taken off. If you play your cards right, you could spin this off as the beginnings of a new business.

[-] Develop improved armour plating.
Your power armour has some basic protection to it, but you know that you can do better. Experiment with different alloys and compounds to come up with superior armour plating for your suits.
DC: 25.Cost: Free. Effect: Superior armour plating.
Rolled: 46

While your armour is good enough to stop blades and most bullets, it isn't good enough to stand up to explosives or armour-piercing bullets yet. You hadn't expected to go up against that, but after Nasira revealed just how well equipped some organised crime syndicates can be, you have second opinions. Better safe than sorry when your life and well-being is on the line.

Experimenting with different alloys and compounds, you are able to come up with a superior combination to what you were previously making. The only downside is that you are hitting the limits of what you can do on a budget. If you want better armour in the future, it's going to cost you.

[-] Invent a strength booster.
Rolled: 42

You already got an exoskeleton that boosted strength to near-peak human levels, now you just had to upgrade it to truly superior superhuman levels. In the end, you achieve this by switching from pneumatics to hydraulics. It isn't completely without its downside as the reaction time is a little slow, but given that you can now dent solid steel with a punch and lift a couple of tons, you consider the trade to be worth it.

Progress: 49/100. Cost: Free. Effect: Fulfil Research Grant.
Rolled: 57

Coming with a technical solution to the wi-fi problem ends up only taking you the summer. Since Dawn City University wants something cost-effective, you decide to keep things simple. That amounts to just making a more efficient wi-fi extender for about the same price.

That way the university can either have better wi-fi for the same price or the same wif-fi for a cheaper price. You hope that they go for the former as a future student there, but ultimately, it isn't your problem as you have no say in how the university administration handles things. And if you do need better wi-fi whilst at Dawn City University, well, you do know how to make one of the wi-fi extenders and have the funds to do so.

[-] Build a supercomputer.
Rolled: 90

You continue to work on your supercomputer, building it up further until it has firmly passed the point of being a regular computer and is without a doubt a true supercomputer. Alas, there is still the logistical side of things to worry about such as finding a safe long-term location for it, sorting out providing it with a suitable power source and making sure that it remains maintenance accessible in case anything goes wrong in the future.

And you know it will because machines don't last forever and sooner or later something will break if only because of wear and tear. That alone would be enough even before you take into account that your supercomputer is mostly made of second-hand parts.

Sorry about how long this took to write, I got writer's block halfway through this. Hopefully, I will be able to write more when you get to the supervillain stuff because you guys have done three turns of prep now.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

September 2010
[X] Yes. Nasira is locked onto finishing Goodman Workshop next turn.

University. The start of a new era for you. No longer will be you dealing with the strictness of high school and being treated like a kid. Now you will be treated like an adult and be given the flexibility to pass or fail on your own merits. Many of your peers might struggle to adjust to their newfound freedom, but you are an old hand at managing your time and responsibilities.

"A shame we couldn't be roommates," you say as you and Nasira walk towards your dorms, "That would have made things much easier."

You decide not to mention that you deliberately arranged things behind the scenes to share a room with your roommate. Nasira doesn't need to know that and you can't see any benefit from telling her, even if she is convinced by your reasoning.

"I just wish we didn't have to stay on-campus dorms for our first year," replies Nasira, "I don't see the point if we can find our own accommodations."

"It is to help new students acclimate to university life and form a bond of shared experience," you tell her, "I don't agree, but I can see the point. At least we will be able to find our own living space next year."

"So we just suck it up for this year," says Nasira with a sigh.

"Yup," you say, "At least we are together in the same dorm. And it won't be so bad if our roommates are anything like they are on-paper."

"Of course you researched them," says Nasira with a playful roll of her eyes, "Come on now, don't be shy."

"My roommate is the youngest of the Fowlers from our generation," you say, naming the resident multi-billionaire family of the Twin Cities.

"So not even the rich are exempt from the stupid rule," mutters Nasira.

"After reviewing the data, she is either a decent person or is passable at the act of being one," you continue, ignoring your best friend's complaining, "I'm more inclined to believe that I will find her being out of touch with how the poor folk handle things rather than any nasty on her part. Hopefully we will be able to strike up a friendship. Being on good terms with the Fowlers, even if it is via their current youngest of them, would be invaluable for us in the future. Even if we discard any possibility of direct financial gain, the doors and opportunities that would be opened to us via their connections would be priceless."

"And my roommate?" inquires Nasira.

"Bronwyn Wright," you answer, "From a wealthy family, but regular wealth rather than super rich. Good grades, strong work ethic and a socialiser. Good looking with white skin, brown hair and brown eyes. A cheerleader who favours both athletics and academics in addition to maintaining a large social circle and favourable reputation. I don't expect any major problems from her, but you may clash with her due to your differences in life experience."

"And you do expect to clash with your own roommate?" asks Nasira.

"Of course, but I'm adaptable and she brings enough to the table that I am going to be flexible," you reply, "I have risen as far as I have in life by being able to tolerate such things. Worst comes to the worst, we'll just skirt the rules or find loopholes in them."

To my surprise, the dorms are more spacious and private than I had anticipated. Two bedrooms, one shared by myself and Joan Fowler while Nasira and her roommate occupy the other, a bathroom attached to each bedroom alongside a large living room and a communal kitchen. We even had a decent-sized utility room to share.

I'm already in the midst of unpacking my stuff when my roommate rolls in. Joan Fowler is confined to a wheelchair thanks to a series of severe illnesses that she was born with. Despite the sheer wealth of her family, some things just aren't available to be brought such as cures to the various ailments of the youngest Fowler. That said, their money has clearly done something for her health because a year or two ago, Joan would be confined to a bed and certainly not attending university in person.

With pale skin, dull red hair and determined green eyes, Joan Fowler is far from a beauty as she wheels her electric wheelchair into the spacious room. Even with your limited expertise in the area, you can tell that her attire is of high quality while the girl herself looks the opposite with forced energy and cheer despite her obvious ailment.

"Hello, roomie!" cries Joan before coughing.

"Hello," you greet her back cautiously, "Are you okay?"

"Just some illness I've lived with my whole life," answers Joan cheerfully, "I've never stopped it from living my life and I'm not going to stop now."

"If you say so," you reply neutrally, "Do you need help?"

"Mum and Dad sent someone to help me with that," says Joan before pausing, "But if you want to help, feel free."

As Joan and you chat, it quickly becomes clear to you that your new roommate really ought to be attending remotely rather than in-person. It might be true that her health might be better than it was, but that doesn't mean that Joan is fit to live in a university dorm. Even if she doesn't want to be in a long term hospital ward like she spent most of her life in, Joan should be looked after at home by her rich family.

And yet despite the frailties of her body, you are also aware of how she was able to wrangle her way into being your roommate. The girl is smart and while her intellect is close to yours, you would be willing to bet that she is smarter than Nasira and you mean no offence to your best friend when you say that. She is also quite the social butterfly despite her health or perhaps she is that way because of her health. With nothing better to do, you can see why Joan has honed her people skills as chatting with her is an unusually pleasant experience.

You will need to be wary of the helpers hired by her family showing up every now and again, but as things stand, rooming with Joan Fowler looks to be a rather enjoyable experience. Especially since she is an engineering student and while you might be taking different courses, you should be able to bond over a shared love of all things mechanical. Hopefully Nasira will be similarly getting along with her new roommate.

Despite the vigours of starting university, you have other things to worry about. Your pair of workshops are flourishing for now and are becoming increasingly less dependent on your personal involvement. Likewise your website designing has gotten off the ground and if you put the effort in, you have the potential to turn into a proper business rather than a one-time gig. Alternatively, you have heard things about owning a laundromat being a profitable yet hands off business so that might be one possibility to look into.

Beyond that, it might be worthwhile to build up a reputation of good behaviour by doing some volunteer work. It won't be directly profitable to you right now, but it may pay dividends in the future should anybody go investigating you and your character. Finally you could try your hand at the stock market. While profits are far from guaranteed, you feel confident in making some degree of income from buying and selling shares on the stock market.

And then there is what you do with your finances once you have acquired them. You already got your power armour design pretty heavily kitted out on top of designs for other assorted equipment, but there is always room for improvement. You have yet to design any laser weapons and your power armour lacks a sensor suite beyond the basics. You could also work on improving your armour plating. Your current compound is good enough for basic street fights, but it lacks staying power against weapons design to pierce armour. Of course, there is also the option to get started on your dream of figuring out nuclear fusion.

Last but not least, you are a budding criminal even if your future criminal empire has yet to get off the ground. You could identify a target to rob for either material gain or to make a point. Alternatively, you have enough funds that you could begin exploiting to the corruption of the Twin Cities.

There are plenty of people out there in a position to influence things or access valuable information who are also willing to take advantage of said positions in exchange for bribes. It is an undesirable thing that you seek to change one day, but for now, you are happy to make use of it for your own benefit. Similar to the last option, you could try looking for blackmail. Hacking into computers and servers for juicy secrets, spying on individuals of influence and so on. It won't be as effective without a network to make use of, but at the sametime, this blackmail could be the beginnings of such a network.

Finally, there is the matter of Nasira's roommate. Your best friend and right hand has expressed some concerns about Bronwyn Wright. Nothing overt or reportable, but the young lady is odd. Whimsical about her belongings, trying to sneak about without drawing attention and making odd jokes or references that only she seems to get.

As you said, it is nothing to worry about on the face of things, but Nasira has the creeps and you owe it to her to reassure her.

I'm changing things up to make running and writing this quest easier for me. I'm going more narrative now so I can worry more about telling the story and less about figuring out gameplay mechanics. The future turn format for now is picking an option from each category and I have plans to have quests, which effectively unlocks a new category where you can take an action each turn to progress that quest plotline.

Any mechanical stuff is going to be blackboxed and handled behind the scenes. This is so I don't have to be hard and fast with the mechanics and about balancing gameplay mechanics when presenting options in the vote or writing the updates.

Beyond that, each turn will be covering a single month while your super computer is being built behind the scenes since you started that last turn.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.
