On that note, these are Lava Deer and we are in a drizzly forest. Instead of tracks, could we just get to high ground and look for steam/smoke? Or does the drizzle restrict visibility too much for that.

I think that this is covered under the Survival skill @Shrooms could we get a tag on the roll for suggesting this?
The method you use for searching may not give tags but it may influence what the TN on the roll is in the first place.

More generally extrapolating this, your specific approach to things may influence how challenging a given success TN is. Really, that's how it tends to be on the tabletop - you say what you want to do, and then a TN is decided for how difficult that action is

Is there high ground around? I think the update said the spar took place on a grassland.

[X] Action Plan: War Crimes
  • Track the Lava Deer
  • The team sets up a good ambush site, use Kenzou's Trapmaking to set up some logfalls/pit traps
  • Kenzou makes the final approach to the deer
    • Go slow and careful for the timeladder bonus
  • Get their attention by either killing a fawn (to enrage the does) or by throwing an explosive tag at the deer (if a good concentration of them are in the same Zone)
  • Use Vacuum Step to get away, if necessary. Lead the enraged deer into the ambush with the rest of the team.
  • Don't hesitate to keep using VS to stay ahead of the deer.
Could add bait or something to lead the deer to an advantageous location where Kenzou has a better chance to stealth up on them?

Is there high ground around? I think the update said the spar took place on a grassland.
The region as a whole is hilly yeah. You camped in a low spot hidden in the forest

Do we *have* any bait?
Shion is right there

Also I was sort of assuming that the deer would be camped out and not on the move during a drizzle. But it's the land of Rain so...
Yeah it rains like 80% of the time or more

[X] Track the Lava Deer and have someone draw their attention, leading them into an ambush.

Lord Nara has shown us the numbers.
This is how they get you.

You have to warn the Tower.
Don't these guys live underground? Did they build a tower underground?

Hanzō could only imagine how much greater the glory would've been if the Summons could have been fully present in the human realm, rather than mere shells pulled from their respective demiplanes.
Do summons now live in separate demiplanes, instead of the Seventh Path?

Jun seemed to come out of his reverie, though he kept his eyes on the horizon, with dark clouds rumbling angrily in the distance. "A storm's coming."
LET'S FUCKING GOOO

Do summons now live in separate demiplanes, instead of the Seventh Path?
The characters don't really know enough about summoning to know about this but I'll go ahead and answer - the 7th Path is essentially just a web of demiplanes. For the most part it's the same as the 7th Path from MFD and LOTROL.

Don't these guys live underground? Did they build a tower underground?
In canon (and in Stormfall) they do actually live on the surface

Sometimes, they may choose not to follow the plans to the letter, if they consider them unreasonable in part or in whole, in which case they'll either exercise character agency to do something else, or will follow the spirit of the plan and adjust things accordingly. The intent is to do this for player benefit as the characters will typically have a better understanding of the setting and circumstance than players will.
The "winning plan" may not always be the one implemented - thread discussion will be taken into account, meme votes will be cast aside, and things will pass through the character-filter for editing. Please try to keep the plans down to small lists of a few bulletpoints and subbulletpoints, and include actionable instructions. Keeping things relatively simple and straightforward (as much as can be done in a universe with ninja, action, and intrigue!) is important to make sure that everyone can participate. If nothing else, plan bloat may cause the author to miss important details.
Hi there! I'll be putting the occasional GM note at the bottom of chapters as random thoughts come to me for running the game.
I'll just go ahead and say it now, but you can assume the characters will double check things with each other when it makes sense to do so
Also, in case it isn't clear, all 3 PCs are fully controllable by the players (caveats for character agency and rah rah). I will shift perspectives around where I feel like doing so, but all three of them are the 'main character' so to speak.
Big fan of all these decisions.

"What am I to do with the lot of you?" he mused.
Killbox them, presumably.

(That's a joke, but more seriously, it seemed weird to me that Shion's behavior wasn't treated as a bigger deal. Attacking your teammate outside of the bounds of an agreed-upon spar seems like it should get her pretty seriously chewed out, at the least. Although we didn't get to see what exactly Kobayashi said to Shion.)

Plot twist: Kobayashi intends to accidentally Shion and use her death as a lesson for the rest of the team.

@Shrooms are you going to represent the benefits of learning from an experienced teacher or good book in any way mechanically? For example, is the team going to receive some kind of XP bonus (over the counterfactual) because they have Kobayashi as their teacher?

Kinda sorta not really. XP is awarded on an arc-by-arc basis based on performance during the arc and other factors, there's no XP/day. Your teacher has benefited the team by pushing them to improve and face new challenges, so in that sense, yes. You'll also note all of the PCs have at least a couple of ninjutsu from their teacher

Current Shion Build (dear mother of fuck, why does she have so many 10s?)

Okay, I know Shion needs a small mountain of XP to unlock paper element, but I say we do some quick maintenance when she gets enough XP. Miss Ma'am, why do you have over a dozen 10-stats??? Luckily, a bottom-heavy pyramid means that we have a lot of room for customization!

Maintenance...
  • Physique and Resolve to 20 so she gets more stress boxes.
  • Substitute to 20 to align with her Athletics 40
  • We can also raise Surging Seas to 20, and grab the Elemental Apprentice: Water, to make Surging Seas actually usable.
    • WDB is a long way off from being usable (needs journeyman), so it can sit where it is for a while.

So then her build would look like...

There isn't as much work to be done, here. Substitution is already (1/2) that of her Athletics, so we just need to...
  • Three extra 10-stats for Pyramid filler reasons
    • Taijutsu, to benefit from the Combat Stunts and RW crossover?
      • Or cooking, perhaps, to eventually aim for the Sickly Sweet stunt?
    • Mednin? She already has Medknow 10
    • Esoterica? I feel like that stat could be present in a lot of high-level stunt/jutsu prereqs)
  • Raise Physique and Resolve to 20 for the extra stress boxes.
  • Raise Athletics to 40 for dodging prowess
    • Sub to 20 to keep (1/2)

We'll also want to consider raising Medknow and Stealth in the future, because her current build makes her a promising stealth/poison assassin. Or, alternatively, we could boost Chakra, and use the Living Roots/Spine of the Earth strat (though, unfortunately, those are both Standard Actions... but they could prove to be prime Tweak material later on, if this is the route we decide to go down).

  • Substitution is a bit overleveled for Kenzou's Athletics, but that's fine

  • Raise Resolve to 20 for mental stress boxes
  • Raise Vac Step to 20 for movement tech

We're going to want to look at the social combat part of the rules, and decide what character we want, covering what fronts.

  • Deceit attacks Empathy and Deceit, and also defends against Deceit and Empathy attacks
    • While everyone should have it leveled to at least 20 or so for sheer opsec reasons, Momoka already has it leveled to 20. So she should, I think, raise it at least to 30.
  • Empathy attacks Deceit and Rapport, and defends against Deceit and Rapport attacks.
    • Shion already has Empathy in the 20s, and already has a plausibly taggable Aspect for it, too. Raise to 30.
  • Intimidation is a wild attack social stat. It benefits from TYS bonus, and forces the enemy to defend with Resolve.
    • Unfortunately, no one has this leveled beyond 1X. However, Kenzou is a melee weapons user, and thus, isn't necessarily going to have the jutsu pyramid filler that the other two will benefit from. It may be worth having Kenzou raise Intimidation into the 4X, longterm.
  • Resolve: everyone should raise this to at least 40, in the long term. Stress boxes, yo.
  • Presence attacks Resolve and Presence, and also defends against Rapport and Presence attacks
    • Kenzou already has this leveled to 20, so we may want to keep leveling it to defend against Rapport/Presence attacks. At least to 30, I think
  • Rapport attacks Empathy and Presence, and defends against Empathy attacks.
    • Shion already has this leveled to 20, so it might be worth raising to 30, to protect against Presence attacks, but this is also covered by Kenzou's own Presence stat, already.
This, of course, assumes that the team will always be together, which is not inherently the case.

Hmmm... Regarding Momoka, I think Taijutsu makes the most sense for their build; Earth style jutsu seem like they'd benefit most easily from hand-to-hand combat. But, on the other hand, who knows what sorta stuff our QM might cook up for us.

edit: I would, I admit, like to play characters that are at least minimally competent at stealth this time, though.

I can't say what kind of earth ninjutsu you might encounter later, but I wouldn't say it overly benefits any particular fighting style. To be honest earth style does not favor offense in general, though any element can do anything. Good for support and defense though.

TJ does at least offer action economy advantage over RW, if you did want to lean into the support specialist angle (until she can get Quick Fire anyways)

I too would like some sneaky ninjas for once :^)

Earth seems extremely useful in battlefield control, especially with a Water user. That doesn't combo extraordinarily well with swordsmanship as a third, but "tie them down so they can get stabbed/blasted" is a reasonable combo at low levels, or even "separate them with walls so they can get stabbed individually".
