Steel and Humanity (A Kantai Collection Quest)

Well, before anything else: the press crew's answer to the second question should be a flat refusal to comment. Not a sheepish silence followed by somebody else inferring that no answer is forthcoming; any military personnel should shut that question down hard. Come straight out with, "It would be wildly inappropriate for us to comment on military procedure."

Is a write in to that effect an option?

Changed the Liaison's entry to somewhat that effect, they are experienced with the press after all, though I can add a write-in option for the liaison to take over if people would prefer.

EDIT: Though I would point out that Danny's not outright asking about doctrine here, he's asking for opinions.

Still inappropriate, but it'd be a good story if he can get anything, and you can do a certain amount of political playing here to get more resources or budget if you hit the right notes...

Sorry... I guess a little of my internal voice slipped into Atinway's there for a second... Though 'like' is a better space filler sound than uhm or uhh at least...

Just remove the "like" and she'll no longer sound like a fourteen-year-old girl who doesn't know how to properly articulate their thoughts.

I think that's an unfair stereotype to apply to that particular speaking quirk, but fine, changed it. I'll just count votes for that answer the same regardless so don't worry about need to update your replies.

I'm sorry if I'm being aggressive about it but I utterly and totally hate people who use the word "like" when not necessary. It makes the character (and person) sound much less competent and confident. Both things that Atinway has an abundance of.

Your son/daughter is a hero for each of us, he/she does not flinch in their line of duty, and rarely gets into a fight, if ever, with another crew when off-duty. Yes, I would say so when you ask me if he/she makes a difference."

Note that I have quite a chunk of write-ins. I have to go to college now and I will be online soon again. Vote for my plan guys :)

Arghhhh, I was just about to sleep! Ok, let's see...

[JK] Write in. No, not you, you're fake news.:V

[X] Horner: ...Worthwhile... this fight by all right's should've been a disaster, even if we had even numbers the expected outcome would still be defeat. But despite that, because of our ship and crew, we beat those odds and showed that humanity will not go down so easily. Even if we do, it will not be quietly.

[] Horner: What it Feels like ma'am? It feels like we've done our duty to the best of our abilities and when needed to do so again we'll readily answer the call.

Just some suggestions. Maybe the first one is over the top, but come on, we kinda pulled off a miracle! :D

-[X] "That said, given the sacrifices made both by Lyn's crew and the crews of other ships I hope we have found something..."

Now I actually don't want Matt to take all the spotlight but Atinway just feels too negative, almost like the lives lost aren't worth it and I really don't want that said on national television for the hurting families to see.

[X] "Lyn is hurt, and I don't think trying to awaken or commune with her in that state is something I can condone."

[X] Write In. It could've been anyone. From engineering being hit, to the bridge, or even myself, but it was them. It was them over the another cargo ship being hit, it was them over the coast being bombed again, it was them over those who can't fight. They died so others could live on. They might be gone but the people who live on even without knowing what happened will be a reminded of their sacrifice.

Boy I'm really trying for those write ins. I actually have never been in situation like this so I don't know how well I'm doing. I don't want to out right lie to them about how almost meaningless/random their deaths were. But I'm trying to imply that because we were here to stop them, the abyssals weren't attacking and killing other's we were the target. They did their duty and took the price of it over innocents.

I'm sorry if I'm being aggressive about it but I utterly and totally hate people who use the word "like" when not necessary.
I laugh at the fact you used totally.

I like your write-in for Horner for the first vote best of all the responses so far. How do we feel after winning? We should feel good about it. Proud that our ship and crew have done something no other human-crewed ship has done so far in this war, not fatalistic 'we got lucky and should all be dead by the odds'.

@ComradeH Your add-on for Horner is even more depressing. 'we were all scared and thought we were all going to die, but if we're ordered to we'll go out and fight another battle we expect to die in again if ordered to'. That might not be exactly what you have Horner saying, but that's definitely a way to read it. Ignoring the PR damage such a statement could make, how would that affect the sailors? Do you think anyone wants to hear their commanding officer talking like that?

Just to play devil's advocate here @aledeth some people prefer to be realistic. The war against the Abyssals is not going well in this universe, and to a certain degree you did get lucky. But then again, there's always spin and public opinion to think about...

I prefer the "realistic" response from an officer (or a soldier). He can hate fighting, he hates war and conflict, but it is still more preferable than the alternative of losing his loved ones. That's why I give a "gruf" and "tough" response like that. It is more like a way to remind the public that no matter how tough an enemy is, the armed forces will always present to keep them saft

By the way, @Spectral Waltz how does the Abyssal war end? I haven't played Kantai so I don't know that.

End?

:)

There is no 'End'...

No canon one anyways...

Urgh, this is going to be a pretty bleak press conference.

I mean we pulled off a miracle here, sure if you want to say it was close I can understand that. But it's only "oh that was so close we were scared and believed we were likely going to die and we'll go out there again with no indication that we've changed our minds or feel any differently". Can't this be made any happier? Do you know how often even stalemates are used as positive propaganda? It's a pr gold mine right now, this is practically served to us and it's being made to sound so bleak.

I don't care how much of a realist someone is, John Q. Public won't be happy to hear the first naval victory against the Abyssals from a human crew dismissed as a fluke, even when it's the crew themselves saying so.

A few of the press exchange glances with each other but most of them are furiously scribbling while the liaison can't seem to decide whether he ought to look worried or relieved at the faintly antagonistic tone.

He takes a moment to let the activity die down and hands start to go up again before pointing to another woman in the third row. "Penelope Candyce, MSNBC uhm... You called your ship, uh her..." The liaison's eyes dart up and he glances left and right briefly, but if he intends to do anything it is forstalled by the reporter getting over her stumbling tongue an instant later. "You called it 'Lyn' sir... Do you mean to say that there is something to the rumors that your ship manifested during the battle?"

The general low rumble of reporters writing suddenly stills, and all eyes are on the podium.

[] [Last Question] Atinway or Horner: Write in a response...
[] [Last Question] Liaison interrupt: "That is not for anyone to confirm at this time, analysis is still being conducted."

"I don't mind but the repairs take first priority. You'll have to wait until she's fixed up and in the water again."

Most of them have the decency not to look disappointed at that pronouncement but the monk does press. "Captain... Are you sure that no sooner can be arranged? Time could cau-" "Lyn is hurt, and I don't think trying to awaken or commune with her in that state is something I can condone. Now, if you want to commune to her spirit or whatever it is called in English, please make a request to the appropriate authority."

'Take it up with the admiral' in other words. Picard doesn't know how much pull the summoners have overall since this is the first time he's had to deal with them. He's tried to stay out of the political mess of rivalry between shipgirl staff and still-active sailing crews as best he can so he's not sure whether they would be able to take their interest up the chain to countermand his authority but if there's any consolation a couple of the summoning staff are shaking their heads at their compatriot's insistence.

After a moment's staring contest, the professor steps up behind the monk and puts a hand on his shoulder. "Come now, it would hardly be fair of you to push her..." Picard is fairly certain the words were not meant to reach his ears, but they do nonetheless as he takes his leave of the summoning division offices...

It's no simple platitude, and Baxton watches his intonation carefully to avoid lapsing into sarcasm, but while it is only small comfort for the families to hear, it is a comfort nonetheless. Leaving two grieving but grateful families behind, he returns to the base in silent melancholy...

Supplies are plentiful in the states with so many fewer steel hulls to maintain and so repairs are mostly a matter of manpower. Your work time is slated to be at least a month to complete, possibly more if any complications or upgrades are to be installed, so the crew is left on shore leave for the forseeable future. While in another time experienced personnel might have been shuffled to a new ship, no one is in any hurry to send them out again so soon after a dangerous battle.

Most of the crew spend the first week or so celebrating in their own ways, happy to be alive, but by the end of the third week of shore leave most are simply frustrated that they aren't going anywhere. A few volunteer to help with repairs where they can but by then the lion's share of bodywork is done, and while anyone can fetch and carry, it takes skilled hands to replace electronics and install new systems.

Speaking of which, since the aft was the worst hit by the battle with the helipads needing to be almost entirely replaced, a unique opportunity comes up with the repairs, not to mention the fact that you have a little clout to spare thanks to your victory. Which your crew uses to implement...

Fixing Up
[] [Fix] Aft Turret: Replace the ruined drone/helicopter pad on the stern with a second AGS mount to add a little firepower. You'll need some extra gunnery crew to run it but you should be able to get them...
[] [Fix] Pilots: Instead of getting a third gun, try to push for an approval that will get you some helicopters or drones and a few extra personnel to pilot them.
[] [Fix] Status Quo: Just build it back to how it was before.

Short I know, I'm just trying to get back into this though. Downtime should be finished and you all should be back to sea by the end of next update.
