– Eddy –
Sabaody was a pathetic showing. Deplorable even. Quite the disappointing performance you put on, Eddy.
"Shut up."
Averting your eyes from the truth, are we? That really doesn't suit you, Eddy. Where did your courage go? The one that led you to follow your captain into the sky?
"Shut. Up."
Reality is knocking on your front door, Eddy like I told you she would. For months now. Wouldn't it be nice to have a powerful and cooperative sword at your side when she inevitably knocks it down?
"I'm going to ignore you now."
Ignoring me isn't going to make the problem go away. She's rather insistent that way.
"You're my problem!"
We both know that isn't true, Eddy. I'm not your problem. I'm your solution.
"Go away."
You don't really want that.
"Don't I?"
I'm a sword. Getting rid of me isn't that difficult, Eddy. You simply have to throw me overboard. So why haven't you?
"Don't go around giving me ideas. I just might do that. Don't think I won't."
We both know you aren't going to do that. If you were going to, you'd have done it already. That you haven't speaks volumes, don't you think?
"Don't tempt me."
Admit it, Eddy. Deep down inside, you know you need me. You need what I can provide. It's why you're practicing with me in the first place.
"I need a solid steel. No more, no less. I've told you this already."
So, you have. Doesn't make it true though, now does it? You can deny it all you want, Eddy.
"I am denying it. Emphatically."
When things get tough, you're going to call upon me again. Like you did during the Payback War.
"That wasn't my choice. That was all you. You forced yourself on me."
And the Admiral? Was that all me, too? Or did you choose to draw upon me of your own free will?
"I'm a swordsman. You're a sword. I can use you whenever I want."
Of course you can. However, you didn't just 'use' me, did you? You actually used me fully knowing what to expect.
"Shut up."
It's nothing to be ashamed of, Eddy. I was meant to be used, and it was a desperate situation. You needed every advantage you could get.
"I needed good, solid steel. You were available, that's all. You're not irreplaceable."
Odd, then, how you didn't look at another sword twice since you got your hands on me? Don't lie to yourself Eddy. I'm superior in every way and we both know it. It's only natural.
"Your craftsmanship is excellent. I'll give you that but no more."
That's progress I suppose. Baby steps, Eddy. Baby steps. Still, it's not just my perfect sheen or my exquisite edge that enraptured you, is it? At least, not since I gave you that little taste against your captain.
"You mean, how you drugged me."
I didn't drug you, Eddy. I simply gave you what you craved. Power. Pure, unadulterated power. My power. The tiniest sliver of which allowed you to go toe to toe with the captain you respect so much. Didn't that feel good?
"I didn't feel like myself, that's all I know."
Because you weren't merely yourself, Eddy. In that moment, you were more. You were a facsimile of what you could be. Of what you can become if you only open up to me.
"It was fake."
Why? Because you didn't 'earn' it? Because you didn't put in the long hours? Don't be ridiculous, Eddy. Accepting my gift is merely efficient. Don't you tailor your training regimen to your own needs? It's certainly no different from your peers gobbling up devil fruits one after the other. Is what they do deplorable in your opinion?
"No, but that's different."
In what manner, Eddy? In what manner? They needed power, they saw an opportunity and they took it. You, on the other hand, are stubbornly clinging on to outdated ideals.
"You're wrong. The outdated ideals you ridicule are my foundation upon which everything else was built. Without them, I would still be scrabbling in the dirt with no direction."
However, a house is more than just the foundation, isn't it? It needs walls, pillars and a roof. Flooring, windows and doors. It's time for you to move beyond your self-set limitations. I can help you with that.
"By taking over my mind?"
Who says I ever did? I merely gave you a small push and you lost control all by yourself. It's a similar principle to how a child swings a bastard sword less than the bastard sword swings the child. You were simply too weak to fully handle my little gift.
"Well, that makes your so-called gift entirely useless, doesn't it?"
If you truly thought that way, you wouldn't be practicing with your friends, now would you? I applaud your current efforts by the way. Limiting the inflow to first get used to my gift before slowly increasing your capacity? A slow and crude method to be sure, but it's a classic.
"Slow and crude?"
There are faster ways. Some would call them shortcuts, but they are simply the most straightforward paths with the fewest bends. One just has to be willing to take them.
"There are no shortcuts to true strength. At least none without a cost."
Do you think your way doesn't come with a price tag of its own? I already mentioned that it's slow which means it costs you time. Time is a finite resource, Eddy, and your account is draining by the minute. The price your outdated ideals demand is your very life itself, a second at a time. And if you aren't ready on time because you were too stubborn to accept the truth, perhaps the lives of your friends.
"Not. Going. To happen."
Ah, but how can you be so sure? You had all these benefits, so many advantages that your peers didn't have, but when it came down to it, what saved your life against the Admiral? What kept you alive when Kizaru rammed three blades of light into you? Your training? Or the regenerative factor provided by my gift?
"…"
But then, you already knew that didn't you? It's why you didn't hesitate to draw upon my gift the moment he stepped into the clearing. Do you regret that decision, Eddy?
"…no."
Now, that wasn't too hard, was it? We agree that my gift can be beneficial at times. Power is always a trade-off, Eddy and never without risks. I won't deny that. It's up to you to decide what price you're willing to pay to keep your loved ones safe.
"And what's your price? My soul?"
Of course not. What would I ever want your soul for? And before you ask, I don't need your body either. My gift is freely given, should you accept it with open arms. Perhaps, in time you won't be overwhelmed any longer regardless of how much of me you channel, hmmm?
"You just said that power is always a trade-off. Now, you claim otherwise."
A gift for a gift. As powerful as I am, my reserves are…finite. I simply require a little help to replenish myself from time to time.
"…you want blood."
It's not such a bad deal, is it? A sword spills blood by its very nature. Might as well put it to good use.
"Is that why you flood my mind with bloodlust all the time?"
I admit, I was a tad…parched when we first met. Unlike you, my previous…owner was worth less than garbage who wasn't worth waking up for. I would have killed him immediately but my standards forced me into a period of abstinence. Though, I give you my word that things are different now. I'll hold myself back, even if that limits what I can do for you.
"What makes you think your word is worth anything to me."
I helped to keep Muret safe. Who knows what might have happened if we hadn't delayed Kizaru as long as we did. I'm sure that warrants at least a little bit of goodwill, wouldn't you say?
"…"
There's no need to make a decision now but do think about it, Eddy. And don't leave me hanging for too long. Trust requires a little time to build up and the longer we have to bond the better. After all, you only have another year and the clock is ticking.
Tick tock. Tick tock.
Tick. Tock.
Tick.
TOCK.
– Bellamy –
Walking through the jungle was a pleasant experience and that went double when you were doing it with someone you liked. Triple, if that someone happened to be a great listener. That the local wildlife didn't bother us was a nice bonus. I'd have promptly turned them into barbeque if they'd dared, but Amazon Lily's fauna was surprisingly intelligent.
Now normally, if one mentioned that one's conversational partner was a good listener, that usually implied that one might have talked a little too much. At the very least, one was liable to have spent a disproportionate small amount of time using one's auditory capabilities. Usually, I tried really hard not to fall into this trap, but…well. Nico Robin made it so incredibly easy to talk to her.
She was appropriately appalled at Lafitte's trickery, enthusiastic about our victory over Wolf and saddened by the Rearguard's noble sacrifice. In fact, if she hadn't told me how enthusiastically the Kuja had spread the
Saga far and wide, I'd have almost believed that today was the first time she'd been told the events of the Payback War.
"Luffy was exceedingly curious. Did you know that he sulked for days after you left?"
"No, but that does seem like him."
"Fufufufu. It certainly does, doesn't it?" Robin chuckled. "Being left out has also lit a giant fire under my captain. A word of warning by the way. Luffy is very determined to have a rematch with you."
"…how troublesome."
"Fufufufu."
My account of Kuma's rescue operation, on the other hand, garnered me a comforting hug, Robin wrapping her arms tightly around my waist and not letting go for a good long minute. Coming from someone who was rather reserved when it came to public displays of affection, it was a heartwarming show of support.
"I told you to come back safe." She mumbled, burying her face into my chest.
"I know. I tried." My words were whispered into her hair. Despite the situation, a small corner of my mind noted that it smelled like roses.
"Be more careful next time."
"How are you so sure there'll be a next time." I asked, pulling slightly back to look down at her face.
"Because you're you and because he's he." Robin answered, a hint of resignation entering her voice. "Unless the issue between you and the admiralty is resolved, there's no way either of you are letting this go."
"Speaking from experience?"
"I know better than most how persistent an Admiral can be and Aokiji used to be a proponent of
Lazy Justice. I can't imagine a supporter of
Unpredictable Justice like Kizaru being any better."
"Well, with a little luck I'll be ready when the time comes. I mean, I've got awakening kinda figured out so…" The words died on my tongue as Robin went on tippy toes to whisper three words into my ear.
"In that case." Then she proceeded to lightly press her lips against my cheek. I, of course, went completely tomato red. Robin giggled a little bit at my response before giving me a small peck on the lips and a playful smile. "For luck."
After steam stopped coming out of my ears, figuratively speaking that is, we resumed walking beneath the verdant foliage. At some point, my had sneaked down to intertwine my fingers with hers and she responded by shifting closer into my side. It…felt good. Stepping over little streams, clambering over fallen trees and helping Robin down the other side (not that she needed the help, but I thought it was a romantic gesture) … before I knew it a couple of hours had passed.
"Are you hungry?"
"Starving."
"Well, then. Shall we?" She asked, offering me her arm. I grinned and took it.
"As my lady wishes."
"More like how your stomach wishes it, no?"
"Guilty as charged."
"Fufufufu."
Not to detract from Amazon Lily's culinary tradition, but most of their dishes tended to be rather rudimentary owing to the relative scarcity of spices on the island. What seasonings they had were looted from various merchant vessels and hence, unpredictable in both variety and availability. Not to mention that going into one of the local restaurants was a sure to attract many curious eyes, eager to observe non-kuja (speak normal) courting rituals in person.
Thankfully, I had a ship and a talented cook on my crew, whose many limbs were capable of doing the work of a dozen gourmet chefs. Naturally, being the pirate that I was, I had absolutely no compunctions about abusing my position and authority to organize a private candlelit dinner for two. Shortly upon returning to the docks, the Black Pearl was taken a little ways out to sea and most of my crew subsequently encouraged to return to the island for the evening.
"Not worried we'll be swept out to sea on an undermanned ship and die a slow, excruciating death of dehydration?"
"Not, if it's with you on board."
My crew had complied with only minimal and good-natured grumbling, leaving the ship devoid of human life apart from myself, Robin and Hewitt. Plus, Mani who took our order while dressed immaculately as a waiter.
"She does look good in that uniform, doesn't she? Small wonder nobody questioned her presence during our first date." Robin remarked, referring to Mani's infiltration of the restaurant staff at Baltigo Base. I gave her my best
what can you do gesture.
"I've found that attempting to keep Mani away from gossip is a futile endeavor. The best I can do is to channel her curiosity in controllable directions. Otherwise, I fear what she may do to satisfy her cravings." I said with my best, fake shudder. This earned me a bout of tinkling laughter, Robin hiding the expression of her mirth behind a manicured hand.
Further conversation was interrupted by the arrival of the first bottle of wine, expertly poured into our glasses by my cooper.
"To good health." I said, offering a toast. Robin accepted it by touching her glass to my own.
"And future happiness."
Hewitt had really outdone himself tonight, serving both of us an individual twelve course dinner. The meant melted on my tongue in an explosion of flavors, the wine sang a wonderful harmony with entrée and the crisp salad delighted my palate. Robin likewise enjoyed the food she was served, giving off little sounds of pleasure as she savored the luxurious pampering of her taste buds.
By the time the last plates were cleared away, the stars had come out to play against the dark fabric of the night sky. The full moon illuminated the ocean waves, which carried the familiar scent of the sea onto my deck.
"So, where are you headed next, Bellamy?" Robin asked, elbows on the table and her chin resting against her hands.
"Kano Country. I do owe the Revolutionaries a mission or two and Sabo called in my help to liberate the kingdom."
"Do you know what you're walking into?" Robin wanted to know, to which I could only shrug.
"Kinda? The whole country is a mess with the king being a puppet of the gangs and the major gangs all fighting each other. Nobody is really in control and supposedly the average life expectancy can vary a lot depending on which side of the street you live on."
"That sounds like a tricky situation."
"Undoubtedly."
We lapsed back into silence for a bit, enjoying the cool ocean breeze. My gaze wandered from the black horizon, across the moonlit waves over to Robin's beautiful eyes.
"Will you come with me?"
In response, my girlfriend reached out to cover one of my hands in one of her own.
"Gladly."
