[X] Stop. Stop. Timeout. First of all, what is going on here? Tell me not like Nova the PTSD victim but Nova the millennia-old warrior monk.
-[X] Did you guys bring me here? Is that how the Stalker and Sentient came along? What happened to my ship? My Cephalon? My Gear? My Pets?
-[X] What about Caeli? Is she involved? She's a sister Tenno and must have a warframe nearby. Was she the one who organized this?
[X] Is stopping the Orokin Empire from appearing even possible? They must not form for thousands, maybe tens of thousands of years. It was already ancient when I was just a kid, its origin a myth.
-[X] I mean if we even change the future that would mean I would never exist or at least never have a chance to go back in time to change the future. But if we never change the future then that would mean I would end right back oh no I've gone crosseyed. This would give the Lotus a headache...

"I… am quite disappointed in you, Hakase," says Chao as she steps forward some more. "Still, I can't blame your intentions, at least. I suppose my own efforts didn't produce a satisfying result."

She sighs.

"Just hope that what you did didn't affect the Plan."

Hakase looks to the side, lips thin.

"Stop."

You can't stay silent anymore and walk between the two of them.

"Stop. Timeout." You stomp the ground and feel the machines around you vibrating. "What is going on there?!"

"Nova..." the two girls begin at the same time.

"You don't need to know." - "Chao is the one who knows the details." What they follow with, however, differ.

"What, are you still going to stay silent at this point?" Hakase shouts. "It's too late for your so called blissful ignorance plan now, and this concerns her as much as it does you. You aren't only changing your history, but hers too!"

"You don't know what you're talking about! You haven't the slightest idea what she went through or how it affected her. You don't know what getting involved might do to her!"

"Because your plan of telling her nothing worked so well?"

"It avoided the wo-"

"Enough!" you shout again, as a wave of energy makes the lights burst above you, plunging the room into darkness.

The only light is the pink glow coming from you and the intermittent blinking of one last lamp in the corner.

"I," you continue, putting as much authority in your voice as you can, "am a Prime, a master of the Naramon way and a general of the Steel Meridian. My actions... changed the very fabric of the origin system and put an end to an immortal empire. I will not be lied to like a scared children. If you would believe you can simply do whatever you want while keeping me in the dark, I will not let you do as you please, so talk. I. Can. Take it."

Silence reigns in the room for a moment, until Chao lets out a long breath.

"Fine. At this point, it is clear that it's unavoidable. What do you want?" Her voice is resigned and you can hear her falling down on a box on the side of the room.

"How did I even get here? Did you bring me along?"

"Pretty much. You were in the void and there was a big release of energy. That probably messed with what I was doing and grabbed you along. Given the scale of what I tried and your turbulences, I suppose we should count ourselves lucky you only arrived a few years after me rather than spread over this period."

"So that's how the Stalker and the Sentient came along?"

"I suppose. It's not like time travel is an exact science..."

You hear Hakase cough a little to the side.

"... well, or a science at all."

"And what about my ship? My Cephalon? My arsenal and my pets?"

"If they came along, they haven't been found yet."

"And what about Caeli? Is she involved? She's a sister Tenno and must have a Warframe nearby. Was she the one who organized this?"

"You know, sister, for a so called master of the Naramon way, you are kind of an idiot sometimes."

You swallow your retort as you guess you kind of deserved that one.

"Also, you really should learn to reign yourself in whenever you have a chance for answers. Imagine something happened right now, I would only have answered basic, useless questions. Now, what do you really want to know?"

You hesitate an instant.

"Is stopping the Orokin empire from appearing even possible?" you let out in a breath.

"It is. And I will make it happen," Chao - or maybe you should think of her as Ceali? - answers with steel in her voice.

"But they will not form for thousand, maybe tens of thousand of years. It was already ancient when I was just a kid, its origin a myth."

"For someone who has no idea of when and how it happened, you are awfully certain of your timeline. No. Believe me, the key point will be in two centuries at most, less than one at least."

This silences you. So soon?

"Do not believe that their ivory towers and galaxy spanning dominion came from the very beginning. No, at first, they were refugees… or maybe invaders, considering. The legends tell of Earth as being their cradle. In a way, that is correct, as this is where they began their conquest, but the actual origin of the first of them is Mars. Tell me, does the name Megalosembria sounds familiar to you?"

You slowly shake your head.

"I figured as much. If there is one thing the Orokin knew how to do, it was destroying, and history wasn't spared." You hear her rise to her feet and begin pacing. "It is the name of a country in the magical world. The only country whose inhabitants survived, and the country who decided that Earth would be theirs."

"In some time, a cataclysm will hit their world, and they will come here. The regular people will accept being simple refugees, but their ruling class, oh… no, they certainly won't. You've seen a bit of magic here, right? Now, if kindly teachers and children can do what you saw, what do you think are the possibilities in a war where there is nowhere to retreat? In a war where one side had no idea of the very existence of magic until it begun?"

"That, is how the Orokin empire begun. And that's without even beginning about the mage who developed Continuity."

"So… what. Your plan is to consolidate until that point then aid Earth when the war begins?" you finally ask.

"No, this plan is too risky. Putting all your chances on one Operator-" Caeli waves a hand in your direction. "- well, maybe two, would mean defeat if they can develop some way to kill or seal us. It will be part of the defense if we get to that, of course, but that is not the central point."

You can see in the feeble light of the open door Caeli spreading her arms.

"Earth fell because it didn't know about magic, because local mages weren't involved enough, and weren't included in strategic planning until it was too late. What I plan to do is reveal that same magic that the mages so wish to keep secret and force them to get involved." she finally concludes, a manic edge entering her voice.

Surprise! It actually isn't dead. IRL thingies mean I don't really know when I'll be able to update, though.

So, basically the Orokin Empire happened because mages were the only ones who could oppose it, and they were too uncoordinated and small in numbers to do even what a single operator could manage?

It's not that mages alone are the only ones who can stop the martians, it is the necessity of cooperation between the mundane governments and the various magical organizations that needs to happen. The magical organizations have nowhere close to the amount of numbers, resources, or even technical skill that the martians have and where the mundane governments do have numbers and resources out the wazoo they have no experience with magic(or even the knowledge that it exists) and wont until refuges start coming over and war breaks out.

And frankly, it's highly understandable that even with the martians trying to conquer the earth that both the mundanes and the magicals wont end up really working together till it's too late. The various magical groups are pretty damn insular when it comes to working with mundanes, to the point where they are virtually governments in their own right in all but name and taxes. As I once posted before back on pages 79, 80 and 81.

Well refugees and the fact that religious conflicts aside the revelation of the hidden magic groups of negima and now a huge population of magical refugees would hit every one of the secular governments paranoia buttons while simultaneously dropping the huge magic is real bomb. And if my memory of the manga is right that doesn't even get to how some of the refugees would have beliefs of magical superiority over the backwards muggle barbarians of earth causing problems too. Really conflict would be inevitable even without the sudden refugee problem, there would just be to many sources of conflict between the two groups that would only take dedicated effort in a post masquerade world were violent confrontations would already be occurring to change. Hence why Chao wants to change that only her method will only result in the conflicts starting sooner with the magic populations more able to defend themselves due to the muggles less futuristic technology and effective support from a Mundus Magicas that still exists. Not sure how to feel about that because really the conflict if anything would be even more bitter and destructive with the Mundus Magicas governments seeing the opportunity to pull a Dilgar.

Hello we are a large organization of people who wield supernatural powers that you didn't thing were possible and have no means of detecting or protecting yourselves from. Our weakest requires several well armed highly trained soldiers to take out in combat and our strongest are walking WMD's with a wide variety in between. If you are wondering how you could have ever missed us existing its because we can use magic to play with your memories and make you remember only what we want you to, never mind the fact that you wouldn't be able to pick us out in a crowd since we look just like normal people. Among our own private little society any who try to reveal our existence gets turned into animals(yes we can do that too) we can also give magic powers and weapons to those who agree to work with us. Don't worry though, we are good guys, we totally don't have our own agendas, our own desires, we totally follow the laws even though we would never be caught if we didn't and trust me this really is the first time we have had this conversation. Now if you were to be so kind please look right at this little magic want of mine, that's right see you next time mister(insert government official).

Its not magic the governments of the world would be paranoid about, its the people who use it.

The reason why governments wouldn't like them? Because they are not part of the government, they are their own private groups. Governments do not like sharing power at all in any way shape or form. Yet now they have to contend with these large organizations of superpowered mages with their own agendas, rules and politics, micro-states is all but name, operating inside their national borders without any sort of oversight or control. They can try to enforce that oversight and control, absorb them into their bureaucracy, but do you really think that large, centuries old organizations used to their own autonomy and independence will just let that happen? And the governments wouldn't be able to stand them existing as independent groups either, not with the amount of power they possess as one of the founding bedrocks of modern western government is that the government has a monopoly on force, a monopoly those groups are powerful enough to challenge.

Again its not magic itself governments will have the biggest issue on, its that the largest and most magically powerful organizations are not going to be the government run ones and that wont change for years. And in the mean time there would be huge amounts of tension and paranoia as both sides do what amounts to a dominance display and during this there is the Megalomesembria Confederation over on mars who will be watching the happenings on earth and I have no illusions about them not agitating the situation to a full on conflict while they wait on the sidelines till the dust has settled and both sides are significantly weakened to the point where they can just stroll on in, take over a huge amount of territory and start transferring their population to earth before the bubble of Mundus Magicus finally pops. Its totally what I would expect from the assholes who run that government.

There are lots of reasons why both the mundane governments and the magical organizations wouldn't suddenly start to be buddy buddy with each other even with a Martian invasion happening, not until sufficient amounts of the leadership on both sides get wiped out and desperation and survival overrule petty power bickering and dominance displays. And by then it would be too late.

Still Chao's plan isn't exactly perfect, it has the potential to start the conflict off even earlier(via Megalosembria taking advantage of the chaos and increased political tensions to spark off wars between the various factions on earth) but I suppose when the other option is inevitable defeat and the rise of the Orokin's, throwing the dice like that is the least bad of no good options. What Chao needs to do is not just reveal the existence of magic to the world, it's also to get the mundane governments and the magical organizations to put aside their egos, feuds and need to bicker over dominance with each other(not just mundane vs magical but also the bickering and feuds between the mundane governments and the bickering and feuds between the magical organizations) and acknowledge that the government of Megalosembria is an existential threat to all of them, requiring they put aside their differences for the time being and work together against those jackasses.

[X] "How would that interact with the magical elite of Megalosembria? It seems it would most likely accelerate their plans, perhaps triggering events earlier, while they were less desperate and ruthless, but had more resources. Or for the matter, Earth based magical elites wanting their own piece of the cake and causing the same crisis from the opposite direction?"

Sooo... do we address her as Onee-sama from now on?

Or maybe we can convince Chao to call us onee sama, who knows which of them is older.

[x] A reveal without a common enemy seems likely to backfire and leave both sides exhausted just in time for the invasion. Are we also going to provide that common enemy?

And just like in canon Negima, a much better solution is to study the cataclysm and prevent the need for war and conquest, especially if you have access to reliable time travel to give you even more time to study it.

Then again, I can see how Warframe Chao would lean towards the path that hopefully obliterates the Orikin's ancestors, even if it leads to war and is the less peaceful, less efficient, and more death-and-misery filled path of the two.

This is what happens when Lotus isn't directing the Tenno.

Mabe point out that it would be a good idea to at least try to avert or lessen whatever cataclysm is coming that destroyed the magical world.

Na, from what I understand they did it to themselves when they fled in the first place. Their pocket realm had a 'time to death' from day one. Only way to stop that is to stop them from leaving in the first place, which means they'd still be on Earth in control.

Or am I mixing up setting?

More like it was never built to handle a population as large as what's currently on mars. There are so many people on mars right now that they are using up the magic of their little VR world faster then it can replenish itself(since the surface of mars is a dead world, it can't generate mana(or at least not as much) like earth can).

Which is why the canon solution was to teraform Mars, but we IC have no idea what the coming cataclysm even is. I'm just saying we could point out that she seems to be operating and planing based on the premise that the war is inevitable, rather than trying to prevent it from ever becoming a factor at all. Not saying that's a bad approach, but it does involve a bit of tunnlevisioning on a single objective at the cost of missing alternatives.

[] And Caeli?
-[] If you were not my sister, the moment you called me an idiot I would have been gone. In the past you've threatened me when I told you about my feelings for Hakase, you've lied to me this entire time and left to me wander around in a barely functioning Nova Warframe lost, confused and depressed. Left as everyone has, unintentionally or not, whittled me down until all that's left is raw and splintered. You don't even care I've been suicidal for months. I faced the Sentient to die Caeli, and I'm not even sure if it's gone. The stalker isn't, which means the plan might be at risk due to everyone dying or at least being sent back to the stone age.
-[] Caeli, we are Tenno, born together in the twisted womb of the Zariman. We have bled together across countless battlefields, fought as one against monsters no one in this time can imagine. There is no one and will be no one as kin as we are until that ship slips into that endless nightmare. But you've been here, alone, for too long.
--[] I know why you did it, and I love you sister too much to ever despise you for it. But this hurts more then any blade or bullet has, and I don't believe any plan needed to have that done to your sister.

A very Naramon answer.

Edit: changed vote to ImmortalsBlade

From what I understand, the 'cataclysm' was "We ran out of stuff, look they have stuff we want!" as far as the invasion went.

Actually it is the collapse of the spell that creates the magical world, thus erasing or dumping a large chunk of the population directly onto the surface of mars.
Ah. See, now I KNOW I'm mixing up settings at some point.

So clearly the best way to solve this is to use a tac-nuke equivilent to the Mars spell before they're ready, so they all die off.

*Proper Tenno Plan*

Honestly, considering Chao has threatened us in the past, insulted us and lied to us (and boy sure don't like being called stupid) I think the establishment of several ground rules and I dunno reminding her she let a Sentient and the Stalker wander around for several months would be... I dunno pertinent?

I'm not happy with the tone of this update but I'll blame it on Chao. As such, kinda want to take her down a rather notable peg.

The current vote seems fine in pointing out the most obvious flaw. We could also point out that we could look for our ship which could supply countries by itself or find some way to avert the tragedy presumably by punching back to the Warframe universe to bring in reinforcements.

But a rather significant part of me really, really wants to tell Chao off because man fuck this, we've been lead around by the nose and told we are wrong for just wanting to do something, insulted at every turn, nearly killed and have basically been a confused miserable mess for most of the quest and now Chao reveals she was a Tenno all along. Just fuck being treated like a child any longer, or basically used as everyone's punching bag emotionally or physically.
