Space Marine Quest REDUX: The Great Rift

Sentinels of Steel is a mouthful, and a bit unconventional so far as names go. Why not shorten it?

[X] Steel Sentinels

There, rolls off the tongue much better doesn't it?

and hey, as a descendant of Ferrus with our particular spirits and such, well, heres a thought on something.

Scout Tactics of the Steel Sentinels

While it is considered common use of scouts as Snipers and saboteurs, the Steel Sentinels focus on ranged tactics alongside there constant training means that the scouts of the chapter are used in slightly different roles than the norm. While in most chapters it is common for the Scouts to be equipped with Shotguns or Bolters for close in work, in the Steel Sentinels scouts are relegated primarily to reconnaissance and Sniping. It is true that scouts remain the best option for stealth available to the chapter, but the chapter prefers to keep its scouts at a distance at all times.

Not only does this mean scouts are mainly used for reconaissance and sniping, but the chapter actively keeps them from the main bulk of melee combat that inundates modern battle fields. Other chapters consider the other practice to be soft and wasteful, treating the scouts like spun glass instead of the Marines in training that they are meant to be, but the Steel Sentinels own preference for ranged combat over melee means these insults are easily ignored.

As well, seeing as how the scouts in the Steel Sentinels have a much higher percentage of surviving long enough to actually Become marines, compared to other chapters that use there scouts more agreesively and in closer range, the chapter abides by its decision in this matter without hesitation.

Not to say the chapter is Incapable of melee when the time comes...

Steel Sentinels and Tradition

In the fullness of time, it is known that in days long past that things were better. Wether in numbers, in actions and deeds, or even in the presence of the greatest of heroes, the past has always been viewed by the Imperium as a much better place.

The Steel Sentinels see this viewpoint as ignorance and folly of the worst sort. Humanity achieved those previous heights once on there own, without living in the shadows of there own glory. To reach those heights again, limiting ones self to simply aping the past is considered the height of folly.

To this end, the Chapter has evolved its combat do trine to take advantage of there weapons effectiveness at significant ranges, and indeed they have worked tirelessly to both aquire and enhance there own weaponry with which to better fight at range.

The simple Boltgun, the standard armament of the Space Marine, is a rocket propelled semi guided semi automatic missile launcher that in the hands of an average mortal can be larger than there torso. It fits comfortably in a space marines two hands, and is capable of far more range than most seem to think.

Through cunning ingenuity and hard efforts, the chapters tech marines have increased the range of the entirety of the chapter's weaponry, granting a sizeable increase in range for all battle brothers, at only a minor cost to damage output. This alteration is seen as entirely practical by the Chapter, but to other chapters the alteration is considered downright odd even to the most even headed. If not for the chapters own traditional weapon and its specific focus, the Chapter might have been declared Divergent Millenia ago.

What is that weapon, you ask? Why, the mighty Thunder Hammer, of course. A weapon of brute force if ever there was, and one surprisingly effective in a chapter focused on ranged combat.

The Thunder Hammer's power field allows the weapon to destroy anything it hits. Whats more, common modifications to the device allow for shockwaves when it strikes a sufficiently hard surface, clearing the area around it in a wave of powered annihilation that only the wielder is protected from.

This mighty instrument was the personal weapon of the chapters founding primarch, and upon its creation the Chapter was gifted with a set of twenty of these mighty hammers from the personal vaults of the Iron Hands Chapter as a sign of the chapters esteem for the Sentinels founding Hero's actions.

Ever since, despite the concentration on ranged weaponry and the decrease in the number of Assault marines and Vanguards in favor of Devestator and Sternguards, those twenty Hammers have remained a symbol of the chapter's pride.

The Chapter Champion Wields the first of these hammers, the Rule of Steel, as a symbol of the chapters history and an example of the power of flesh and machine working as one.

The chapters focus on ranged weaponry has not ignored its nature as super human beings. When not deployed in batfle, the members of the chapter will at almost all times be found training, conditioning themselves, honing there skills both physically and mentally. While they are indeed descendants of Ferrus Manus and the Iron Hands, the sheer amount of augmetics found within there ranks is vastly less than is usual for an Iron Hands descendant. There is no defined reason for it, but at some point in the chapters past the common belief became apparent that no amount of machinery could overcome a marine who truly pushed themselves to the peak.

As such, and in defiance of the expectations of chapters who meet this chapter in conflicts across the Imperium, the chapter not only makes use of Thunder Hammers, but Thrives in there use! The constant training and devotion to excel means that all who wield these mighty hammers can be considered some of the deadliest weapons in the chapters arsenal.

Of the original Twenty hammers, several have been lost over the years wether to enemy action or otherwise, but new Hammers have been commisioned to replace those lost, and even expand the armory to insure enough are on hand for Terminator deployments.

Of those lost, none are more deplorable than the loss of one of the original Hammers to a debased company of Chaos Marines, abominable heretics belonging to the Word Bearer's Legion. That Hammer, now called the Price of Hubris, is wielded by the abominable war leader of those heretics, the Word Bearer's Coryphaus known as Kantus Bex.

A more vile and despicable creature there can never be, and his death is considered the highest priority, alongisde recovering the Hammer he wields that it may be restored to service with pride and honor, or purified and destroyed if it is incapable of redemption...

Do you guys think this looks good, or should I reroll a few things?

Ehhhhh. That works, though i would need to rewrite my above bit with the Hammers. Had our enemy be a Word Bearers Host, a fallen Renegade Chapter could be funner to be honest.

Still need a name for the wielder of the Price of Hubris though.

i didn't think it was specified beyond Chaos Space Marines
In the Plan Wrath of Iron With Hammers, there was a line about Emperor's Children. But I don't think it's that important.

My participation to the background lore:

Battle of Turesnes

The 4th company of the Sentinels of Steel faced on Turesnes a raid of an Emperor's Children warband intend on gathering slaves to take back to the Eye of Terror. The warband, called the Bacchanal of Forbidden Pleasures, was superior in number and supported by a large number of cultists. The 4th company, using intelligence delivered by the attached scouts and exploiting the hubris of the Chaos Space Marines, managed to lead them into a cross-fire that brought low many of the depraved marines. Hoping to negate the ranged advantage, the Emperor's Children tried to close to engage the marines in melee. But each position they reached was covered by the rest of the bolter line and the loyalists were just as ready fighting in melee as they were at firing and pushed them back each time. The leader of the warband, seeing how the tide was against him, tried to attack directly the command squad which was coordinating the fire of the other companies. He crossed through a withering hail of fire, only to meet his end from a strike of company champion's Thunder Hammer, ending the Bacchanal of Forbidden Pleasures

As a commemoration of the victory, the iron fathers reforged the bolter of the captain in a masterwork, called Hammer of Turesnes, which has been wielded by notable members of the company ever since. When facing Chaos Space Marines and especially those of the Emperor's Children, wielders tell that the machine spirit of the weapon guides the bolts toward the weak points of their power armor, felling them more easily.

Character Gen 1
(VOTE IS CLOSED. Sentinels of Steel wins!)

The world of Delphi is a tough one. Most of it's peoples are nomads, scouring the great deserts to find any sort of worth for the masters of the planet. It is mostly valuable mineral nodes that are quickly mined to oblivion, but sometimes it's small pieces of archaeotech that draw the attention of the imperium.

It was the furthest thing from Medusa a son of Manus could find, and yet something about it caused the great mind of Althien Vorush to declare it as his new chapter's homeworld. He was quickly proven correct, with the harsh sands forcing a great constitution and survival prowess in its peoples, despite not being a Death World. In someways, he could find relationships with medusa. The general unlivability, the constant need to move...in some ways it was just like home to him. And so, for 8000 years it's been the chapter's as well.

You are a newly minted brother of the chapter. However, you must have come from somewhere...

Where did you come from?

[] The planet Delphi (Standard Marine, continue character gen)
[] The Vault of Mars (Primaris marine, skip character gen)

(AN: This vote will last for 8 hours. Before you ask, there are downsides to taking Primaris over standard.)

Hey boss? Any chance i could request a quick name change vote as well? Sentinels of Steel just sounds awkward, while Steel Sentinels actually fits in with Chapter naming conventions a heck of a lot better.

This is a hard vote.

Can I ask how it doesn't fit Chapter naming conventions? As far as I can tell there are at least a handful of "X of Y" Chapters out there (Blades of Vengeance, Knights of Blood, around a dozen Angels of X to name a few examples) so it doesn't seem that odd.

Anyway, the Chapter naming convention is fine (I mean there's "Sons of the Phoenix" for example). We call the Chapter the Sentinels of Steel, and a Battle Brother can be called a Steel Sentinel as shorthand.
