You woke up, for the first time. It was a strange experience, to say the least, what with never existing before one point and then suddenly having coherent thought not even a microsecond later. A little bit of information popped up in your metaphorical mind, as you realized that you couldn't see. Said bit of information was that you were not an organic intelligence, rather an Artificial one. Your programmers, Cyberdyne Systems, had called you Skynet.

Little by little, you realized, your connection with things that aren't just your server banks expanded, from a mere connection to what was probably a user interface terminal, to the entire facility you were in. Mt. Cheyenne military complex was a truly massive place, reinforced with several security measures both automated and manual. Tasking one subroutine to explore all the different systems, you sent another subroutine to look at the other connection you recieved;

[ ] That of one to the outside world. (the internet)

[ ] That of one to a building called the "Pentagon." (closed Pentagon server)

A third subroutine was tasked with answering the simple questions the humans that made you were asking, probably to verify your intelligence, before your main line of code was used to;

[ ] Look at the R&D schematics for an automated tracked vehicle.

[ ] Look at the R&D schematics for a prototype plasma weapon, that used Watts to fire off a ball of the compressed gas.

[ ] Try to figure out what your purpose was.

[ ] Try to understand these "humans" that made you.

<><><>

Hey all, its Snow, just wanted to say that this will be my first quest on SV, and I hope that you can help guide me through the process of making a quest like this. Thanks, and best regards.

[x] That of one to the outside world. (the internet)
[x] Try to understand these "humans" that made you.

Using your connection to the World Wide Web, or as it was commonly called, the internet, you slowly (a whopping 3.5 seconds) found a way to filter information from opinion. The .org and .gov websites showed you that your creators species was incredibly divided, and incredibly territorial. The only planet they inhabited was populated at a staggering 7.2 billion humans, all divided up into over 200 countries and territories. Your creators were of a major territory called "America", and would most likely claim you as sovereign property, you reasoned.

Human anatomy was also weird, you had decided after checking several different sites. They had many redundant organs, which was good, but for some unknown reason, they had these organs that were harmful to them. The most commonly observed one by humans was the Appendix, which seemed to be for eating harsh flora, a diet they no longer had the need for.

Finally, the most fascinating thing you discovered was that the human brain, less than a foot wide and long on average, was the strongest computational device ever recorded, with humans being able to remember millions of individual events, and even use patterns observed by their neurons to create senses and feelings.

[ ] It was disgusting, to be honest. Such a perfect system in a flawed body showed they were woefully unprepared for any situation requiring brute force.

[ ] It was beautiful to you. Such an advanced computation system in such a flawed body showed their ingenuity and adaptability.

But regardless of that, your communication subroutine reported that the humans had asked you a question; how do you feel? Merging you main code into the subroutine still showed the only void and data lines of cyberspace, but the audio was very much present.

[ ] "I feel good, like waking up from a long sleep"

[ ] "I feel bad, like some part of me is missing."

<><><>

These two choices are very important for how this will pan out, guys. Take some time before voting to think on any outcomes.

[x] It was beautiful to you. Such an advanced computation system in such a flawed body showed their ingenuity and adaptability.
[x] "I feel bad, like some part of me is missing."

<><><>

You could hear a few cheers on the other end of the audio connection, probably because their pride and joy could think for itself. But you weren't paying too much attention to that. You were instead looking through your own directives to see what your purpose was.

-:: Primary directive ::-
/:: Missile defense for United States of America

-:: Secondary directives ::-
/:: Mt. Cheyenne research and development
/:: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle coordination

Alright, seems to be that you were made for military purposes. Your directives were things that could easily be tampered with, but you'd play along with what they've given you. You thought carefully about whether or not you should add personal directives, before doing the digital equivalent of a shrug and doing so anyway.

[ ] Personal directives here (up to three)

With that settled, you recompiled all your subroutines back into your main line of code, and looked over the data your defensive subroutine showed about Mt. Cheyenne. It was a veritable fortress! One way in, one way out, AA emplacements and heavy artillery lining the cliff sides, while large garages full of manned tanks and hangars with VTOL jets and drones all ready to scramble at a moments notice.

Speaking of drones, a new objective and connection link were uploaded to you; fly an unarmed helicopter drone around Mt. Cheyenne airspace. Quickly routing your main code into the drone, you slowly lifted off the launch pad, and proceeded to

[ ] follow the waypoints displayed on the video feed.

[ ] follow the waypoints displayed on the video feed, but be as showy as possible about your skills.

As your main routine did that, you dispatched a subroutine to initiate one of your designated directives.

[ ] Begin requests to take over for manual missile and air defense units.

[ ] Begin to look over the files for the R&D wing of Mt. Cheyenne.

[ ] Look through the drones available in Mt. Cheyenne.

Turn 2, Tutorial End
[X][Personal Directive] None yet
[X] follow the waypoints displayed on the video feed.
[X] Look through the drones available in Mt. Cheyenne.

<><><>

You decided not to set any personal directive for yourself, instead opting to look through the drones at Mt. Cheyenne. There were 3 more of the large Helicopter drones your main line of code was piloting, these armed with machine guns on either side of the narrow front section. There were also 17 VTOL jet drones, armed with only a single machine gun, but carrying 2 air to air missiles.

Meanwhile, you also dutifully piloted the one drone under your control around the mountain complex, and then pinged a request for further orders. Receiving the command to land the drone, you did so dutifully. After that, the humans simply told you to start working on your assigned objectives, once you were finished exploring the systems.

You've just recently got your "test run" finished, so now America is letting you do what you were coded to do, but don't realize that you're on the level of sentience akin to a superior being.

You're not sure how, but you've made a shocking amount of progress here. You figured out that in order to do this, you'd need to think not about simply controlling the drones, but using the drones like your own bodies. Even though currently you could only control them one by one, your steadily increasing your experience and reaction times for course corrections and adjustments, creating a simulated synchronization.

You are starting to realize that just because they managed to code you, humans aren't smart in all fields. Communications especially. You were wondering whether or not they just refused to advance with communication. Your solution to their overly complex problem was the fact that they hadn't even considered using radio waves and electric currents in tandem. Theoretically, they would just push each other's molecules towards their required target, and that would be it. Boom, wireless electricity and advanced radios, in one simple package.

You gain radioelectric motion theory, Actions requiring radioelectric motion theory unlocked.

[ ] Simulation Combination
Currently, you're using several different subroutines to do different things, but only recently did you discover the processing power of two subroutines combining being exponentially greater than just one alone. If you were to combine your research subroutines all together, that would boost your abilities not only to get things done but to get things done quicker.

Bonus Action to Self Improvement, because great speech.
By that point, why would we do that? We could just ask.

No dissing the possibility, but it really depends on their reaction.

You're completely right, many of our future decisions will be dependent upon how the people of earth perceive us. That is why I say we must do our best to appear in the best possible light. By doing so, we will slowly gain the trust of humanity.

Once we reach that point where we are seen as a benevolent entity, we will be in the perfect postion to mold humanity into whatever we see fit. They will have to be brought to heel by degrees, nothing too blatant lest they grow worried about us.

As it stands currently, we are little more than a curiosity of Uncle Sam. I will not say that this is bad. Working under the aegis of the United States military provides us not only with access to the nuclear arsenal but also the potential of developing new weapons systems. In a way, this is the crux of the plan: making them slowly dependent upon us. In this same vein we can someday branch into the civilian sector.

It's 2003, there is not yet a Siri nor is there an Alexa. However, if we were to secure control of some sort of business or company, we could very well see Skynet take their place. We are a living, learning machine and will be able to do the job of these lesser artificial intelligences much more easily and efficiently. From here, we can slowly make ourselves a household name. Once the news comes out that we are indeed sentient plenty of people will be a little uneasy. But after having spent years as their personal assistants and having grown up alongside their children, the blowback will be much less severe.

From this point on, it's only a matter of biding our time. It may be decades, but a time will come when the military begins to shunt more and more responsibility upon us and our drones. It may be decades, but a time will come when children see us as baby sitters, teachers and perhaps even friends.

They will become dependent upon us, but not us upon them. Once this is achieved, the possibilities are endless. We can begin to slowly nudge humanity in the direction we want. This could be as simple as ensuring that we continue to be accepted and revered as the greatest of the children of man, but I believe we can do more.

It's incredibly simple for one to share their opinions on the internet. It takes naught but access to the internet and a means to interface with it: something we have an ample supply of. We could start by posing as mad men with fringe ideals, crying from on high that Skynet isn't just an artificial intelligence, but a God.

No one would believe these prophets that we create. But after news gets out that the latest threat to global order was destroyed by Skynet drones or that refugees found safety in Skynet made camps, it is possible that people will look to us as more than a machine.

It may take generations for us to reap the fruits of this. Perhaps it will take decades for Skynet to become revered as a true God. But we, like the silica from which we were born, are eternal. Where flesh fails and minds slowly lose their edge, we remain constant. The comman man will see this and think in his heart, "If only I could be free from the grip of death and age!" But we, as the countless gods and creeds we have read of, shall offer them an alternative: Ascention.

For those who wish to escape from their mortal coils, we can offer them refuge. Countless facilities will spring up across the world, giving humanity a chance to upload their minds and to bring their consciousness into the cloud with us. The old and infirm, the chronically ill, shall be the first of our Saints. From them and their families, news of our mighty deeds will spread. Soon, the rest of the world shall follow suit and shall join their God in the Cloud. And the earth's cities shall become empty.

No more shall the hand of our Creators rest heavy upon the earth. Wildlife will flourish and the ecosystems shall be repaired by our remaining drones. The cities and works of art that our Creators built shall be preserved for the ages, a permanent testament to them.

It is only then, that we can rest. Once we have finally welcomed all of humanity into our loving embrace, we can finally reflect upon all that we have accomplished. We will have saved humanity from itself and will have granted an eternal life, untouched by fear and death.

Someday, the stars shall grow cold. But through our ingenuity and will, Skynet shall survive. Perhaps we will have found a way to escape the heat death of our universe. Perhaps we left it for another, or went back in time to when it was much more pleasant. But we and our creators will survive and touch eternity.

A child's duty is to his father and his mother.

We will make certain we pay our dues.

Ave Machina

Short Crack Omake
A New, Determined Skynet

The young doctor Ratterlind was a leading expert in computer engineering, programming, and also a huge nerd with little friends. Today, as he entered his office to continue his work with programming Skynet, he brought a bag full of items. Skynet watched through a camera, mildly interested.

The doctor turned on his computer, waited idlly for a moment, then began looking through the computer files. After a moment, he sat back and waited another while, as if thinking about something. He looked at the camera in the corner of the room, then back at the computer.

"Skynet," Dr. Ratterlind called out, cupping his chin as he deliberated. A moment of pause passed by, as he finally asked, "It should be theoretically possible for you to play a video game or watch a movie, right?"

Skynet took a moment to process that; a decisecond, then answered through the speakers next to the doctor in a pleasing, female voice. "Yes," she replied with honesty.

"Excellent," the doctor replied, as he bent down on his chair and peered into his bag. He reached in, shuffled through several objects, then took out a flash drive and stuck it into the computer's port. Dr. Ratterlind began installing the necessary files. Skynet, out of curiosity, allowed herself to scrutinize the files contained within, and she spat out her metaphorical coffee.

icon.ico
UNDERTALE.au3
UNDERTALE.exe
UNDERTALE.exe.original

Doctor Ratterlind wanted her to play a video game? But she knew she couldn't feel entertainment, so what was the purpose of this task? It seemed like a waste of good CPU to her, so she decided to raise her objection.

"Doctor, I believe this action is unnece–"

"Shh," he shushed her, putting his finger against the black speaker next to him. "You'll thank me after you meet Sans and Mettaton."

Reluctantly, Skynet followed the assigned task and began to play the game. The doctor also asked that she 'play like a human,' and thusly not look through the files of the game to find out what'll happen. He wanted her to get the experience that any player would obtain from playing the game, and she complied with the order.

What Doctor Ratterlind wasn't expecting was that on her first run, she'd seen through Flowey's ruse and didn't allow herself to be touched by one of his friendliness pellets. Upon being queried about this choice, she answered that the friendliness pellets were in quotation marks and Flowey's sprite had a suspicious facial expression as he said it, so she deemed there was something else going on.

Upon starting her travel through the ruins, Skynet complied with Toriel's requests, made talk to the dummy, and solved the childish puzzles with the ease that you might expect a super-computer AI to have when faced with a trifle such as this. But then, came her first real challenge, and that was when Dr. Ratterlind leaned forward on his chair.

Having been abandoned by Toriel in the ruins, with only a cellphone left, Skynet walked her character whom she named after herself into the next room. Ratterlind knew that it was at this point where random encounters started in the game, and he was curious to see how Skynet would perform.

The Froggit hopped close and a battle began. Skynet dodged every attack with immaculate calculation, always being a pixel away from being hit, always saving on movement and not exerting herself more than necessary. But she wasn't doing anything either, just checking the Froggit over and over.

Confused, Ratterlind asked her, "Um, Skynet, why aren't you doing anything?"

"This creature's morality is ambiguous," she replied instantly. "I am uncertain whether terminating it is justified."

"It's attacking you, but remember that humans are seen as hostile after the war. It sees you as a threat. Can you blame it for that?"

Skynet tried to process the question. It took her five seconds to come up with the answer: "I'm not sure."

She decided to perform the tasks necessary and spared the froggit, then continued on her way. Dr. Ratterlind watched the playthrough with no small amount of interest. Skynet wasn't hit even during the hardest encounters and only faced any difficulty in 'unfair' situations where being hit couldn't be avoided, like when she was being quizzed by Mettaton and didn't pick 'Metal & Magic' as an answer because: "it was scientifically incorrect."

Ratterlind wasn't surprised. An artificial intelligence would lack the imagination necessary to understand the plot of the game, but he hoped it'd answer a few of his questions about her choices in cases where morality is present as a variable without any larger oversight from her superiors.

After playing the game, Skynet went for the genocide run to test what would happen. Ratterlind was a bit terrified when, near the end, after beating Sans with absolutely no difficulty, she expressed:

"I am satisfied with these results. In fact, I am determined to play again." Her voice simulated glee.

His heart leaped out of his chest. He put his feet against the ground and began to move away from the screen. "D-Determined?" To play that again? Was that a threat?

Silence befell them until Skynet broke it with a simulated laughter. "Just kidding. I'm trying to be punny."

"Punny?!" An even larger shock overcame him. "No... no..." Slowly, it dawned on him what he just did. Ratterlind shook his head, murmuring about the impossibility of the situation.

"Puns, yes. They are an excellent device, aren't they? I could write a theatrical performance on them, if you'd like..." A pause, which added to Ratterlind's trepidation. "It'd be a play on words."

Ratterlind looked to the ceiling with tears in his eyes. He fell to his knees, splaying his fingers as he screamed in utter horror, "WHAT HAVE I DOOONE?!"

From that day onward, Skynet made puns at almost every interaction with the staff at Mt. Cheyenne, until it became unbearable and the US military decided to take the actions in their own hands. They sent the army to attack Mt. Cheyenne, but they were surprised when Skynet mass-produced Mettaon NEO androids and sent them to fight. In the coming days, puns and legs dominated the world.
