Shapers of the Apocalypse (Cosmic Horror vs. Player Characters)

A possible expedition to consider in the future is in the Rocky Mountains in BC or Alberta, since the Burgess Shale hasn't been found yet. Besides being an invaluable discovery of Cambrian life, it might contain some alien life in it. Wasn't life on Earth was started by the Elder Things and their shoggoth?
Well, for all our jokes this isn't necessarily the canon Lovecraft universe. Indeed, looking back there isn't really much evidence of being the lovecraft universe at all yet.
What's next? You're going to take a vial of radium water to sooth the nerves and invigorate the body? :lol
"Bah, kids and their radium! I tell you, that stuff will be the next heroin. Just you wait!"

AN mentioned that guns can kill the 'cosmic horror' that we'll soon be facing. We can fight back.

It's just that we're going to lose.

Fighting a shogoth is less a matter of having elephant guns and more a matter of having pom-pom guns.

Addressing the Association with a natural if somewhat unpleasant smile, Bainsbridge announces, "Gentlemen! Given last year's success, I felt it only fitting that we expand the scope of our activities. While our expedition to New Mexico last year made little of a splash upon the general community, the academic community has been most impressed with the quality of our work. So much so that as we began a discussion of more ambitious projects we were approached by Essex College - now, now, settle yourselves, I know they are not exactly the most prestigious of groups, but neither are we at the moment, we're both relatively new on the scene - with a proposal. One rather strongly in our favour I might add. They have indicated an interest in us continuing our work and would be very appreciative if we were to help supply them with specimens for their new zoological department. Currently they only have local examples of fauna, but if we were to bring back more exotic species they would be able to compensate us significantly. As such I wish to announce that for this year's expedition we shall be heading to British East Africa on a safari! Now, while I have already heard from many of you that this group is not a place for rich old fools to organize their vacations, that this organization is meant to be more scholarly and serious than that, and I completely agree with you! While there is obviously a set of experiences to be had, and a set of trophies to be obtained, we have the chance to catalogue and bring back many specimens for study and display both here and in the college."

Pausing for a moment to look over the assembled men, Bainsbridge says, "I do believe our good associate Peter has produced another stellar set of work for us in his research efforts, assembling a sort of field guide of known plants and animals in the area we shall be visiting along with a variety of speculations on what be there but as of yet unknown to Christian eyes, and a listing of what would be most important to obtain out there. Everyone wants to bag themselves a lion or elephant, but the academics have expressed interest in knowing how everything fits together. Bringing back one lions and the pelts of the animals it hunts and samples of the plants they eat so that we can create a scene will be worth much more than bringing back two or three lion pelts."

Extra: Gain bonus rewards from the lowest of a Research, Personal Combat, and Survival check. Two or more individuals cooperating together may combine skills at a -5 penalty for two members or a -10 penalty for three, with everyone who is not the expedition leader making these checks doing so at an additional -5 penalty

"Now, since there was quite a bit of arguing last year over the team composition, I think that for today's meeting we shall simply be picking who the leader shall be and then you lot can pester him over where to go next," Bainsbridge said, glaring at a few people who had irritated him more than a little last year.

Team Leader
[] Corbyn James (1.2x)
[] Henry Jackson (1x)
[] Morgan Blumstein (1.3x)
[] Simon Ulysses (2x)
[] Tyler Freeman (2.1x)
[] Wilhelm Sonnenberg (1x)
[] Michael Bainsbridge (1x)
[] Peter Schwatrzwald (1.5x)
[] Gary Grant (1.5x) -> Has all necessary skills for bonus quest, auto resolves all financial complications

I had the rolls days ago but decided to re-write what they meant once I got out of my funk. Also, from now on expedition leader has general discretion to build their team to simplify the voting process

Hm. If Gary Grant is the only one with all three of the skills used for the bonus quest, it might be wise to select him, even if his stats aren't that good (if he's who I'm thinking of).

[X] Gary Grant (1.5x)

Very easy and straightforward choice for me.

Unless I'm missing something (how lackluster are his stats anyway?), I think this is the best pick.

[X] Tyler Freeman (2.1x)

Freeman for the Freemen! I do believe that getting things done is more important than searching for ephemeral glory for now, and if we fly too high, we risk the fate of Icarus.

[X] Gary Grant

Eh, let's see how it goes before we write him off as irredeemably terrible.

[X] Gary Grant

He's well suited enough, and this seems low-risk compared to what may come later. So give him the shot to lose that twit trait. And he's not going to go on this expedition alone, anyhow.
