Shapers of the Apocalypse (Cosmic Horror vs. Player Characters)

Rereading the update AGAIN, I realized that fundraising actually just converts temp influence into temp resources, so yeah, it is easier after expeditions. You were right all along.

Oh snap, I must've remembered that when I was writing my plan and then forgot it afterwards, lol! :lol

I'm sure you know how it is old boy, the memory starts to play tricks on itself as one begins to enter one's own Sunset of the Years...

Can I also just say that I was looking forward to this going in and I'm still finding myself surprised by how much fun this format is?

Just because no ladies ran for office doesn't mean there aren't any in the club!

I suspect it's something like -1d6 influence and +1d12 resources.

I imagine the ideal thing is to would be Fundraising (with Jackson, or Bainsbridge), and Manage Endowments (with Ulysses, or Bainsbridge) in the same turn right after successfully finishing a really showy-offy expedition, when we have a glut of Temporary Influence. Also Consolidate Connections with whoever we don't end up using on the first two, ideally.

The thing is, when you've just come back from Darkest Far Away with the head of some terrifying beast or a newly mapped river or the trinkets of some savage tribe with daguerreotypes to match, you want to strike while the iron is hot. The public, even those amongst them of a scientific bent who are interested in exploration, are fickle creatures! If you don't try to seize the moment then you'll be forgotten within a few months for the next Amusement or Diversion sweeping the nation!

Oh I'll drop in eventually, I'm just waiting for it to feel like a natural progression, depends on how things develop. We shall see what happens during this first term.
There's record of women explorers being inducted into major explorer's societies in the 1890's. It would be novel, but next year a woman explorer actually co-founds an explorer's society in London.

Okay wow she was kind of a badass. That's freaking awesome, go her.

Refraining from voting for the moment since I want to do it IC and at present it rather is a gentleman's explorer's club.

Gentlemen! Gentlemen! And you too, Theo, that's an excellent false moustache today!

"Honestly, old boy. I've heard you complain of your memory so often, I wonder if you've forgotten your complaining! Eha-haha! Nontheless, I do oft feel that memory isn't a set of the stone myself. It's no steel, oh no, more soft, and often bright by our own view. Gold perhaps." Malcolm rubs at his salt and pepper bead for a moment, before refocusing himself. " In any case, before I find myself waxing philosophical again I mean to say that any man can make mistakes, if only he'll accept a friendly ribbing after it, eh?"

"One can only hope that it's the gold of treasured memories, and not the fake lustre of regret and vainglory, eh old friend?" Coxworth sips his brandy. "And honestly, if we were to try to count the number of ribbings we've exchanged over the years I suspect we'd still be here at the next meeting, only to find that we'd forgotten where we'd gotten to and needed to start all over again!"

I nod. "Oh yes. This association is going places. And I've learned its not just in the good way.

I sip some of my own brandy.

Well, to a new year and a new expedition!

I mostly just wish we'd fundraised this turn so I'd have an idea of what numbers to use when doing these hellish probability calculations. It's honestly fifty times the work to include the skill replacement chance.

If that's not already a euphemism for masturbation it should become one.

Malcolm chuckles to himself. "Oh indeed. I would bet my good name that all the grands of sand in deserts of Egypt could not number our bickering without running out, and any who take me up on such a bet will find the the reputation of August Tiberius Malcolm untouched!"

The expressions on faces as the Massachusetts Cartographer's Association meets towards summer's end come in a wide variety of configurations. While Henry and Michael both wear canary eating grins, Simon is one of embarrassed contrition and Tyler and Wilhelm just glare at him. Taking the podium to address the audience, Michael says, "Gentlemen, I am currently pleased to inform all of you that we will be able to not just outfit and send out our first expedition since the passing of Captain Fairbrooks, but that it has been fully paid for by our newest friend and sponsor of the Association, Clayton Jefferson. I wish to take this moment to extent my gratitude to Henry for his work in getting us in touch with Mr. Jefferson."

Standing up at the gesture from Michael, Henry politely bobs his head to the audience at their applause and says, "Thank you gentlemen, but in this case I must thank Michael in turn for his donation of a bottle of 1871 Hennessy Hors d'âge when asked. Clayton is an old friend of mine from my army days with a fondness for cognac and he was very appreciative of being able to share sure a luxury with me while he was in town."

Letting Henry sit back down, Michael says with a grin, "I can assure you, after meeting with Mr. Jefferson before he went back home, I am more than pleased with the return on investment we got from the treasures of my cellar. Mr. Jefferson, sometimes called 'Mr. Midas' for his business acumen, owns a very considerable plot of land for cattle ranching in the New Mexico Territory and has contacts with numerous other landowners and officials there. When our interest in stretching our legs in the American Southwest was made known to him, he was more than happy to provide all the funding and support we could need, and then some! While we will obviously be assisting him with a more accurate survey of his own lands, he does not even require that we solely stick to his property. This is a grand opportunity for all of us, and we shall assuredly seize it for all it is worth."

Michael pauses a bit at that before a bit of a frown settles over his face and he says, "Now, I am afraid to report that not all of our endeavors this year have been so wildly successful, although that would be entirely unfair. Simon, if you could explain what exactly happened, that would be greatly appreciated."

Standing up sheepishly, Simon says, "While I have already expressed this in private, I wish to begin by publicly apologizing to Mr. Freeman and Mr. Sonnenberg and thank Mr. James. In the course of consolidating some of our donations into sustainable investments to ensure our funding for years to come, I made a solid financial deal that also ended up being of ill fortune to the boat manufacturing company that Mr. Freeman was making inquiries to purchase from. While Mr. James has the court papers already passing through to ensure that we do not remain black listed by the boat builders on the East Coast for the foreseeable future, it will unfortunately take some time to work through the system. About the only good news is that even before Mr. Jefferson provided his resources to us we were in better financial standing than we were before."

Cannot use the Purchase Asset (Expedition Yacht) action next year

Allowing Simon to sit back down, Michael lets a wry sort of half grin come across his mustachioed face before he says, "Well, let it not be said that one cannot earn enemies in business. Still, little harm done in the long term I would say. With that bit of news squared away, now let us get onto the exciting part of a meeting like this: choosing who shall lead this expedition and who shall accompany them!"

Expedition Leader (Choose 1)
Unless otherwise noted, all members from the Dramatis Personae are available with a vote weighting of x1
Corbyn James (1.5x)
Morgan Blumstein (1.3x)
Michael Bainsbridge (0.67x)
Tyler Freeman (2.1x)
Peter Schwartzwald (1.2x)
Gary Grant (1.1x) - Deep Pockets Special - Any financial complications are automatically dealt with if he is expedition leader

Expedition Members (Choose as many as you wish)
Unless otherwise noted, all members from the Dramatis Personae are available with a vote weight of x1)
Henry Jackson (1.9x)

Note: If members of the executive are assigned to the expedition, should anything happen to them there may be issues such as penalties to actions or loss of their actions the next turn while they are replaced in a special election. As the length of the expedition is expected to be a year, duties are unlikely to be interrupted by an absence.

*hugs*

We'll get numbers for it this turn or the next one, I'm sure. But it makes more sense to get the numbers at a time when we think we're likely to gain the most by doing so, wouldn't you agree? Mad props to you for doing those calculations though, seriously man, it's really cool of you.

A toast to our honoured member Mr George, for his tireless assistance to the Treasurer's Office!

If that's not already a euphemism for masturbation it should become one.

Goddamnit, now I don't know whether or not to rate this with a Hug or a Funny!

Let Corbyn get an easy expedition in early, before tentacled horrors eat us.

Let Jackson have his fun, but only because duties are unlikely to be affected. Otherwise he'd be staying home.

I am beyond glad that I shied away from the risk of the yacht falling through(though it wouldn't have mattered given the critical).

"For such a fortuitous expedition, we must send our finest cartographers and geologists! Best let both Tyler and Henry go along too, two people are always better than one if something goes wrong"

Schwartzwald on lead then I should think? Good stats and 20+ cartography. I think it's of paramount importance that the leader has 20+ Cartography on a Survey.

I guess Corbyn is an option since it's an easy expedition, but I'd like to have him go on one as a subordinate before we fulfill his ambition.

Hmm with our sponsor and the business nature of the expedition, maybe having the leader be a lawyer is worthwhile enough to tip the balance.

Expedition members likely have nearly full ability to use their stats. It probably won't hurt to allow Corbyn his lead.

"Why, since Mr. Freeman wants to lead this one that much, I say we let him! Besides that corner of the country is still full of Injuns and Mexicans, it's best if we make sure our team is capable of defending their integrity. Also, Sonnenberg is the best damn cartographer in this Association, while good old Schwartzwald's skills in geology would be quite the asset, I'd bet."

Alright, I think we should send Corbyn with the lead and leave one person with good charisma and one person with good management at home

Ulysses and Bainsbridge at home and we can swap out who stays for the next one?

I think we ought to send Corbyn on an expedition or two as a team member before fulfilling his Ambition so early. It would be embarrassing to have things get messed up if we don't send our best people on the first expedition!

Corbyn needs to go on the expedition even if you don't want him to lead it; he needs the training so we can fulfill his ambition well.

"Don't forget about Simon, everyone. The boy's a better cartographer than Wilhem, and we all know he dearly loves to make maps"

OOC: Simon has 6 bonus dice on cartography and his ambition is to fill in the blank spaces on the maps. Let's get him started.

Hmph, I'd like to have someone with 20 charisma and another with 20 management at home holding down the fort but Blumstein's Obsessive is a real obstacle to him holding that job and I want Schwartzwald going out on the expedition since he didn't win the election, so that leaves Bainsbridge as the competent manager at home, meaning we need to fill a charisma roll and we need to send Corbyn out so I believe one of Jackson, Freeman, and Ulysses needs to stay. Any idea which you'd prefer?
