Shadows of the Past

I think that we should look around the market, but in addition to having fun I want to follow @TotallyNotEvil's train of thought. Our single most lucrative skill is healing. We have a basic surgery kit, and in emergencies we have our alchemy potions, but we don't have any raw materials. Let's look around the market and scout out which stalls are selling herbs and other things we need, and how much they're trying to sell them for.

We get insight there and Yaxkin suddenly has an edge in future bargaining. Then we can get those herbs and try to set up a healer's practice if we can, and our supply of income is guaranteed so long as we aren't sabotaged or robbed.

[X] Look around the market.
-[X] Get a feel for the market and how things seem to work, how people go about trading on such a large scale.
-[X] Scout out which stalls sell herbs or other things you would need to sell your skills as a healer.
-[X] Try to learn about any healers that are already in the city and what their skills are.
-[X] Listen for any rumors you can overhear.
-[X] Buy yourself something nice to celebrate coming to this place. Perhaps a Honey Tamali.
-[X] If at all possible, see if you can learn anything about the Wise Men taking apprentices.

@Azel, for leveling up Perception from 3 to 4 do we get to roll for a trait?

Okay, this is better than my idea, supported.

@Duesal @Metrux @Sqweaktoy Little addition so we don't get robbed in our sleep.

Actually, don't we already have a room for ourselves this night? I thought the merchant was going to give us a room this first night...

Huh, warrior duty makes some mad cash then? We made six times as much as a healer per day as guard.

Or was Otlin just that desperate?
I think he was just that desperate. He didn't have the manpower to power through the bandits, and he didn't have a scout to avoid the bandits. And worse still, he already over-committed to the success of this particular venture.

And to top it off, we knew exactly how much we were worth and weren't shy of haggling for a fair deal.

I guess it doesn't :B

The Wise Men have healers too, so the skill isn't that desperately in demand and you get some actual competition. That's the downside of the place being a treasure trove of knowledge. You aren't that special here.
You would have earned a lot better in Zacatl.

Warriors make 1 Quachtli a month (which is one full trip from Tlamaca to Zacatl) or 2 Quachtli if they are visibly skilled (read: well equipped) or haggle well. Known danger pays extra, which is why you got 2 Quachtli for a trip of only half a month.

Your average worker with no skills that are in high demand makes roughly 150 beans a month, with the cost of living being somewhere between 70 and 100 beans, depending on your circumstances. A tavern is obviously more expensive then owning your own little house.

Bottom line is that honest work won't make you rich quickly. Danger pays a lot more.

Slightly disheartening, but not unexpected. And at least here we can potentially train our healing further.

Maybe we could work for a warrior as a bit, level our skills as much as we can (mainly Charm and Diplomacy), and then when we have enough money and diplomancing to bargain properly we come to the Wise Men to try to be apprenticed.

Of course, this is in the event that we can't just get in now.

My guess? We will have some time to prepare for the test. Probably something they do yearly, not just off the bat for anyone that shows up.

At least we have a quality 7 alchemical brew to show them.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking too. So we stick around for a bit, learn as much as we can about the city and the wise men along with the typical trade routes and jobs, then we venture out regularly as a scout or a warrior. Hopefully we can some good XP and loot. We're close to the threshold for Bladed Weapons 4.

Keep in mind that skills won't level on their own if you don't use them. However, you can train on your own or look for a teacher.

I'd say we probably want to routinely use alchemy if we can whilst we want for the Wise Men Apprenticeship event/get prepared for it... Because that's probably going to be one of our biggest skills and it's hard to level up so dedicated effort needs to be taken.

Also, repeating a previous question but @Azel Did you roll for a trait due to levelling up Perception, or are traits harder to get now/dependent on other criteria?

No, trait gain was never dependent on the skill leveling. You had a 20% chance to gain a trait for the skills you took a Secondary for and the two main focuses of a Main.

Now you don't gain traits passively anymore. If you search a trainer, you can directly learn traits from him. That takes time and effort, but you can directly pick what you want.

Forgot that was how things happened...

But yeah, so we need to specifically learn traits now? Or is it possible to earn them through actions, just requires a rather noteworthy event and luck?

Some traits can only be earned through actions, but the learnable ones usually require the training.

You don't pick up for example a combat style by chance.

@Azel, what about Archery? If we wanted to push that to level 4 and get a trait, would we go to a teacher or would we go looking for things to kill?
